Top 10k FPL managers reap rewards as Triple Captain chip comes to the fore

As expected, Gameweek 36 proved the most popular for the Triple Captain chip in the end.

34.97% of managers ranked inside the top 10,000 worldwide opted to enhance their armbands with Liverpool hosting Huddersfield.

It was the Reds’ mismatch with the Premier League basement boys that inspired the swathe of Triple Captain activations, with three of the four different players chosen for it Anfield based.

21.31% of top 10k managers played their Triple Captain chip on Sadio Mané (£10.1m), who registered a healthy 13 point haul.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Salah (£13.2m) was trusted with the chip by 12.58% of managers at the highest level – an even more impressive outcome from his 19-points scored against Huddersfield.

Roberto Firmino (£9.3m), who missed out on Gameweek 36 with a muscular problem, and Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) were both backed with the Triple Captain chip by under 1% of the top 10,000.

As you can see from the table above, the Triple Captain chip still has the power to act as a differential in the closing Gameweeks of the season.

The second Wildcard and the Free Hit chips have all but outlived their usefulness as each of them has been used by over 99.6% of managers inside the top 10k.

The Bench Boost is currently on 95.54% usage by those at this level, but 12.4% are still yet to use their Triple Captain chips.

They will be considering some of the mismatches in Gameweeks 37 and 38, which include Chelsea facing Watford at Stamford, Manchester United travelling to Huddersfield and then hosting Cardiff.

Manchester City’s remaining fixtures could catch their attention with Leicester coming to the Etihad Stadium in Gameweek 37 before Pep Guardiola’s men travel to Brighton on the closing day of the campaign.

Looking at how many chips have used in the top 10,000 further highlights the opportunity for some managers within that.

82.8% of them have now exhausted their chip supply with two Gameweeks left of the season.

That means that 17.2% still have at least one joker up their sleeve between now and the end of the season, and it is possible that there are some ranked between 10,000 and 20,000 with the ability to break into the top tier with effective chip deployment.

With Wildcards and Free Hits very much things of the past now this season, the template of players inside the top 10k remains largely similar for Gameweek 36 as it was for Double Gameweek 35.

Managers at this level have kept faith in their Brighton defensive assets ahead of the visit of Newcastle to the Amex Stadium.

Mat Ryan (£4.4m) and Shane Duffy (£4.8m) both have over 56% effective ownership within the top 10k for Gameweek 36.

The power of Salah’s huge double-figure haul against Huddersfield on Friday is demonstrated by the fact that he is not among the top five most popular midfield assets for Gameweek 36.

He is in just 30% of squads in the top 10k, but his effective ownership, factoring in the captaincies and Triple Captain chips, was the sixth-best on 70.94%.

The only changes to this model came in defence and up front.

Off the back of Manchester City’s eight clean sheets in their last 10 matches, Aymeric Laporte (£6.2m) increases in popularity at the expense of Jan Valery (£4.1m).

Meanwhile, Andre Gray (£6.0m) is now the third most popular forward, although is in just 22% of squads in the top 10,000.

Could work out.. I'm not sold on Ings even tho I own him. I'm keeping Jimi, looking at another way to get Rash. Will possibly get Rondon out for him.

Firmino in for Laca was also my planned move. But at this stage of the seas6it pays to wait for the deadline even if it means missing out on 0.1m.

Anyone else think this article would be much more readable if the % were to only 1 decimal place or even nearest whole number?

    Jimenez 89.94% ownership!

    90% is fine surely.

FPL really is a rollercoaster. After GW31 (blank) I played my free hit chip and fell from 3k>5k. Then I played my bench boost and rose from 5k > 400. I was talked about on the scout cast and featured in The Times. Last week I plummeted to almost 3k. This week I take a hit to bring in Mane, own TAA and TC Salah and I am back in the Top 1k

Doing things differently to the masses is certainly more fun. But it is also a lot more stressful!

It is funny because 2k OR is a huge achievement but when you drop from 400 to 2.8k in a single week with 3 to play it didn't feel like it.

Very true. This plan was always in place from GW25 to GW38. I took a very long term approach at that point. At the time I was 7k. If I do better than that at the end of the season then it has bee a success.

Fairly simple. Patience is key. Owning the big players who have great fixtures regardless of form is key. Eg. People tend to say no to bringing in Pogba for the final 2. He could be a great punt. And covering off the Top 10k EOR players you anticipate to be over 100% e.g. I brought in Mane for a hit this week. Also moving early on players that you have a long term plan for and will rise in value in the first half of the season and then making last minute moves in the second half of the season.

This makes sense. I tried different approach by not fully covering highest 10K EOR players and have fallen apart.

It isn't always about covering them all. But it is about judging risk. E.g Mane on 153% at home to Huddersfield needed to be covered. Even if it meant taking a hit. Jimenez is away to Watford and on 90%. I do own him but I feel the risk of not owning him isn't too high this week. If I didn't own him I wouldn't have brought him in this week. So it isn't about going template. Just mitigating risk.

My point exactly, Sterling sometimes ago etc. really hurts the rank. And the worst blunder of all time, missing BB deadline DGW35 🙁

I didn't follow my own advice when Salah played Bournemouth earlier in the season. It killed my rank. My mate didn't play his BB last week as well. Although his Duffy c went a lot better than he expected.

I've got Pogba and Rashford in mind if Utd beat Chelsea.

I've been grinding my way up and finall into top 10k a few weeks back and now top 5k. Had planned to bring in Salah for Huddersfield but stuck with Sterling after City won midweek. Saved a FT but need Sterling to kick on now. Hoping to finish as high as possible

61 with 12 to play (bench boost)

        Patricio, Guaita,
        AWB, Luiz, Laporte, Duffy,
        Son, Sterling, Camarasa,

No, just used my own chip strategy due to wildcarding in January. Took a hit last week with everyone bench boosting but made up for it so far this week.

        Mane > Hazard

        Leno

Some bizarre comments on here regarding Leicester being a ‘tough’ game for city.

What are Leicester actually playing for? City are going to be so fired up - imo if they beat Burnley tomorrow it’s over

I disagree. I think they will sweep aside Burnley but Leicester for me was always the tricky one. Even before United I felt that was the toughest game in the run in after Spurs.

Maybe but don't know if I agree with the season ticker rankings.
It's not like I am keeping Vardy but don't see City hauling.
1 or 2 nil good enough and then yes it is over.

Covered my rival beautifully who I knew would (TC) Mane. He had Salah too but no Pool defence. I went Salah(c), brought Mane in for KdB and have always had Robbo. 65-58 to me. Tactics!

That is no mean feat. FPL is a personal journey and it is still a great feat. I had a terrible season last year and it taught me a lot. Finish on a high. Switch off during the summer. Learn the lessons. Then shoot for the stars next year.

            I started this season strongly.
Then it went terrible, lots of bad luck which led me to quit it for 2 months between mid February and mid April.
Missed it so returned just before gw34 deadline.
Wildcarded, had a mediocre gw34 score but a big gw35 one.
Now on a successful TC Mane with Robbo and TAA and many good players to come.
Will free hit in gw38 and that will probably get a high score too.
Looking back, the 2 month break was a good thing, I was addicted and was making bad decisions taking hits.
It was no fun back then, but now I take it easy and luck certainly helps.
Last season's gw38, just to have a last bit of fun, I took a -24 hit and built a team I liked.
It scored 96 pts and got close to winning our mini league.
Don't know how I got to say all the above but.. play the game the way you like and if it doesn't go your way, take it easy!
            A lesson for me too.

Exactly. My wife won her work league 3 years in a row. She doesn't know much about football she doesn't know about fixtures. She watched the first match on match of the day every week and brought in the best player in that game on the Saturday night. She would always captain the best player every week (Suarez, RVP etc) regardless of the fixtures. She had 3 Top 10k finishes in a row. There is more than 1 way to play the game.

65 pts from Salah (C), Mane & Robbo so far!

I have DECIDED TO SAVE MY TC CHIP (Perhaps the wrong decision but oh well!)

Trying to start a small thread on who you think is worthy for the TC chip for GW37 & GW38!

        Let me know your thoughts!!

(2nd in my ML with 30 points to chase, 1st place decided to save his TC too!)

        My thoughts on TC:

        GW37:
        Jimenez VS FUL (HOME)
        Salah vs new (Away)
        Aguerooooo vs LEI (HOME)
        Sterling vs LEI (HOME)
        Pogba vs HUD (HOME)
        Rashford vs HUD (HOME)

        GW38: (Final Day TC)
        Agueroooo vs bri (Away)
        Sterling vs bri (Away)
        Salah vs WOL (Home)

        VOTE!

        Cheers Gents!

            So far:

            Mane 20
            Aguero & Auba 19

        Best way forward here

        Patricio — foster
Doherty Laporte Kola - Valery Duffy
        Son Sterling Mane Pogba Jwp
        Kun Jiménez— Gray

        A) Jwp + Gray >> Elliot + Rashford (-4)....will then plan to do Jiménez > Mitro in gw38. It does leaves a very poor bench (Doherty, Duffy, Elliot) for gw38 if rotation happens

B: Laporte + Gray >> Shaw + Rashford (-4)....then Jiménez > Mitro in gw38. slightly improves gw38 situation as I will have jwp on bench for any rotation

C: Gray >> DCL/Ings and Bench jwp. Then in gw38, Do Jiménez > Rashford and Bench DCL instead of jwp

D: something else especially to cover my defence in 38 when Doherty/Duffy have tough fixtures and if Kola doesn’t start

Leaning towards C as it avoids the hit, still gets me Rashford (albeit only in 38) and have a decent front 8 in gw38 to cover some rotation.

Season is coming to the end. This is my first FPL season and I am having a blast. I started playing fantasy football through european and world cup, but this is way better. Also this is great community and everyone is nice and helpful. So I just wanted to say thanks to everyone here.

Now what are your final transfer plans for last 2 gws? Do you still have any chips left and how you plan to use them?

I used all my chips. TC was failure on Salah away to Fulham. BB went great, FH was ok. What about you?

Good to see you had a good one! Whats your overall rank right now?

I personally saved my TC this week (perhaps the wrong choice), but I did captain salah!

I am pretty certain of TC-ing a man city player next week or week after!

Chips all used. I thinking to replace Vardy with Rashford or Zaha.

Take this as a learning season. The community will help with 1 off transfer/bench/captaincy decisions but you will find out that a lot comes down to longer term thinking. That is your own journey. That improves with experience. Next year perhaps get a grab sorted and you will feel more involved.

For my my FH was a disaster. BB a big success. 2nd WC has had mixed results. 1st WC was a disaster. .

          BBed last gw, got 112.
TCing this gw, on 63 with 8 to play.
Still have FH to play, which will be done in gw38, so this week I'll make my last transfers which I plan to be:

          Eriksen->Hazard (WAT)
          Son->Pogba (hud)
          Vardy->Rashford (hud)

Or even Siggy (BUR) instead of Pogba.

My chips have gone great tbh.

But my captaincy decisions have flopped (too many fails from Salah and Kane). Should have taken more hits to get the big hitters in. Seems like those who have rotated between Salah, Mane, Hazard, Sterling, Pogba, Aguero, Kane, Aubameyang have done well. Patience hasn't paid off as much this season IMO.

Pogba or B.Silva (or keep Moura) for the last 2?

Pogba just because of HUD. But I would wait till 5 mins before next deadline.

I’ve been playing over 10 years and never missed a deadline and that includes days before I had a smart phone or tablet! Probably says more about my sad dedication to a fantasy game than anything else though!

Agreed, I’ll wait until later. Pogba price drop last night should allow me to wait until 5 mins before.

Surely we need a Utd defender for last two of Hudds & Cardiff right? Any thoughts on who you would prefer?

I reckon Cardiff will score against them but they should keep a clean sheet against Huddersfield particularly if Mounie plays. Definitely wouldn’t take a hit for a Utd defender though

Only way is down for Scout Picks after having Salah, Mane and Robertson yesterday. Possibly the best three opening picks by the Scouts ever.

How an earth I still have Pogba. Don't like him as a player, scores only when given pen and United are crap.

Might aswell keep till end of season right?
