Captains

Title-chasers expected to headline Gameweek 38 captaincy debate

The title-chasing players at Manchester City and Liverpool are expected to be the front-runners for the final captain debate of the season.

The 2018/19 campaign comes to a close with Gameweek 38 on Sunday afternoon, with the destiny of the Premier League trophy virtually the only thing left to be decided.

Second-placed Liverpool have been a devastating attacking force at Anfield this year, which should see some interest in options such as Sadio Mané (£10.2m) and Mohamed Salah (£13.3m).

The Senegalese international may have an advantage given that he has a much more reliable record at home over a longer period, scoring 12 goals in his last 11 Premier League matches in front of his own fans.

Furthermore, he is currently completely fit while Salah has been placed in concussion protocol.

Jurgen Klopp has said that at this stage he is confident the Egyptian will play a part in Gameweek 38, but he will have missed training for most of the week – so it will be interesting to see how much of a party his yellow flag plays in the captain poll.

The vote is now live on our website and can be participated in either in the embedded section at the bottom of this article or in the sidebar.

Meanwhile, Manchester City face an appealing trip to Brighton on Sunday, knowing that a win will secure a second consecutive Premier League title.

The Seagulls have conceded nine goals in their last four at home, while Manchester City have scored at least twice in each of their last four on the road.

Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) may prove to be the most popular of the Citizens options given he has attacking returns in two of his last three away trips.

Meanwhile, Sergio Aguero (£11.9m), who recorded his first blank in a home Premier League start this season on Monday night, will also be considered. He has two goals in his last four on the road as well.

However, with Manchester City’s attack slowing down in favour of their defensive solidity, maybe Aymeric Laporte (£6.3m) will prove the most popular candidate.

Six clean sheets in his last seven Premier League outings has helped the centre-back become a seriously reliable option, especially with two attacking returns thrown in for good measure.

In fact, since the turn of the year, Laporte has posted a better points-per-game (6.79) than both Sterling (6.69) and Aguero (6.44).

Whether Liverpool defensive assets are strongly considered may depend on what Fantasy managers believe they can expect from Wolves’ attackers.

Raúl Jiménez (£7.0m) has been particularly effective against the top six this season although Wolves have not been in such impressive form away from Molineux in recent months.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.7m) has been a hugely exciting option in recent weeks, stringing together consecutive scores of eight, 11, 10 and 10 points over the last four Gameweeks.

Meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk (£6.7m) has two attacking returns in that time, as well as benefitting from Liverpool’s three clean sheets.

The most reliable of them all from a long-term perspective this season has been Andrew Robertson (£6.8m), who assisted twice in the 5-0 win over Huddersfield.

However, with mini-leagues and overall ranking now the main focus of most managers, it is possible that we may see some bespoke captaincy decisions.

Those looking for differentials on the main players may have to roll the dice given the typically unpredictable nature of Gameweek 38.

Despite a blank against Manchester City on Monday night, Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) still has five goals and an assist in his last four home matches.

Coming to the King Power Stadium on the final day of the season are Chelsea, who have wrapped up Champions League qualification and are without a clean sheet on the road since Gameweek 20.

Huddersfield have been poor on their travels too with 15 goals conceded in their last four away matches.

That may cause some to consider their Southampton options for Gameweek 38, Nathan Redmond (£5.4m) the most likely.

He may have been rested for the trip to West Ham, but given the impact he made when he took to the pitch, he should return to the side on Sunday.

Crucially, Redmond has attacking returns in each of his last three home matches against teams outside the top six.

Do we think that Utd and Arsenal will play their best team?
I'm on a FH and wondering which teams have the most to play for.. other than the obvious Pool an City.

Dont think Utd know what their best team is. Personally think Arsenal will rest a few even though they had a good win in EL. Chelsea and Spurs could well do the same

Im really in need of help with my strikers.. have 22mil for two strikers and my City quota is full. Could get Aguero but then Id need to get rid of a city defender. I have a draft with both Laca and Auba... with Rashford as 3rd striker.

Team value of 105.5 leaves a lot of room to wiggle.

Probably Aubameyang and Vardy if you’re happy to just spend based on value.
On FH I’d get Everton def, tielemans, would probably drop sterling if i were chasing rank too

If you had a 9 point lead over rival would you block TAA this week?
I have Robbo but rival doesn't nor is he going to get him.

If I dont go for TAA can get a striker for Jimenez.

I’m down on Wilson. If you take Fraser as his source of returns then Fraser needs to beat AWB first. No one much has got past AWB this year.

I also posted on last page on all the changes Howe has tried recently. I find that really off putting

    Son replacement thought.

Fraser plays on the left. Given AWB plays on the right that’s one transfer I’d not want this week - unless of course Howe moves him onto the right as this week’s experiment.

Yeah I agree thats what is putting me off Fraser.

A poorly executed GW34 WC might have cost me 1st place in my ML, all because I didn't properly plan ahead.

    1. Brought in Sterling, Mane, Son and Eriksen, but no Salah because I couldn't afford it
    2. Triple Brighton and Foster instead of Laporte or Ederson. (because I couldn't afford it)
    3. Whole team in general is too balanced. Perfect for a Bench Boost. BUT backfired because I couldn't bring in Salah for TC36 or Hazard for GW37 without a hit.

Just remember everybody: it’s GW38, so anything could happen.

      Anything.

Nailed on players who’ve played 90 minutes 37 weeks on the spin will be on the bench, teams with less than nothing to play for will score 5 away to a top 6 team, a complete nobody will hit a hat trick and delight the one person on Twitter who TCed him, and there will be 2 high profile red cards, minimum.

Anything could happen. Prepare for it, not just with your team and transfers but with your head and expectations too.

Good advice. I'm a little worried having Quaner on the bench TBH.

        Man Utd 0 - 5 Cardiff, isn't a shock prediction

On the contrary, I'd be wary of getting too wrapped up on this GW38, anything can happen talk.

Aside from Spurs v Leicester last season, everything was pretty predictable.

        Burnley 1-2 Bournemouth
        Palace 2-0 West Brom
        Huddersfield 0-1 Arsenal
        Liverpool 4-0 Brighton
        Man Utd 1-0 Watford
        Newcastle 3-0 Chelsea
        Southampton 0-1 Man City
        Spurs 5-4 Leicester
        Swansea 1-2 Stoke
        West Ham 3-1 Everton

Siggy or bilva? Leaning towards siggy because the game could be very open against a weak spurs side but bilva has been looking good lately and has a lot to play for

0.4 ITB, 1 FT - advice greatly appreciated!

      Fabianski

      Salah, Mane, Sterling, Jota
      Llorente, Jimenez, Wilson

      (Ryan, Kolasinac, Boly, SON*)

      A) Son & Jimenez -> Aguero & 4.0 (-4)
      B) Son -> Pogba (bench Jota)
      C) Son -> Bilva (bench Jota)

      Thinking A?

thanks - hadn't considered Redmond - you fancy him over a City/United asset this week? I don't like the look of two Wolves players away to Liverpool.

Waiting on firmino news as I have both him and Jimenez
More than likely playing him as his record is good away, big game player as well.

I was planning to transfer him out, but dealing with Son first.
Still might transfer him though, don't expect more than 1 goal at the very best against Liverpool...and think there will be a few players who can do well in 38 at that price.

2 FT. 0 ITB. Sitting at 11.5k OR...

      Lloris
      Robertson / Laporte / Valery
      Salah* / Mané / SON / Jota
      Aguero / Vardy / Jimenez

      Foster // Yoshida / Hojbjerg / Masina

Getting Yoshida in was a bad move. Blocked an easy Redmond transfer!

Regardless, best use of 2 FT this week?

      A) Son/Hojbjerg > Bilva/JWP
      B) Son/Hojbjerg > Siggy/Redmond
      C) Perez/Rondon/Sterling etc?

What else is worth a suggestion? Would you take a -4?
