Clinical Wood set to exploit Arsenal’s Europe hangover

The last day of the season is perhaps when Fantasy Premier League differentials are needed more than ever.

That’s why, for the final time in 2018/19, we’ve pulled out three options, one from each outfield position, who could help your one last hurrah.

Chris Wood

Price: £6.3m

Ownership: 1.4%

Chris Wood (£6.3m) looks like a decent differential for Gameweek 38 as Burnley host an Arsenal side on the back of Europa League exploits on Thursday night.

The Gunners’ trip to Spain was not quite as emotionally draining as Chelsea’s penalty shoot-out with Eintracht Frankfurt, but Unai Emery certainly made sure his players put their all into the 4-2 win on the night (7-3 on aggregate).

With the Europa League final now approaching for Arsenal, even if it is a few weeks away yet, it seems likely that some key players will have their minutes managed. After all, Emery has rotated his team quite often this season.

For that reason, Burnley will fancy their chances of a positive result at Turf Moor, especially as Arsenal’s away record in the Premier League remains fair mediocre.

Wood looks like the most likely to benefit from this as he has been afforded more big chances than any other player in the last four matches.

He has not shot at the same rate as Mohamed Salah (£13.3m) in that run, just eight times, but 50% of those efforts have been on target.

That has helped Wood to three attacking returns in that time.

Owned by just 1.4% and an easy step-down from anyone unsure of Raúl Jiménez‘s (£6.9m) chances at Anfield, he could be a great difference maker.

Michail Antonio

Price: £6.8m

Ownership: 1.2%

West Ham midfielder Michail Antonio (£6.8m) has enjoyed a resurgence in recent weeks as his team seems to have returned from the beach to finish the season on a high.

The Hammers travel to Watford in Gameweek 38, to face a defence that is still without a clean sheet since February.

Their last shut-out was now 11 matches ago, the longest such run in the division.

Furthermore, the Hornets remain in a precarious position for defensive statistics.

In their last six at home only Arsenal have conceded more big chances than Javi Gracia’s side.

That should mean West Ham have plenty of opportunities at Vicarage Road, which should play into Antonio’s hands.

The only player with more shots on target than him in the last four matches is Mohamed Salah (£13.3m), so the numbers suggest he stands a high chance of getting some difference-making returns this weekend.

Joe Bryan

Price: 4.8m

Ownership: 0.2%

Owned by just 0.2%, Joe Bryan (£4.8m) is just about as much of a differential as you could possibly find.

Fulham’s defence has obviously not been too strong this season, but thanks to the work of goalkeeper Sergio Rico (£4.4m), they do have three clean sheets in their last four.

Newcastle come to Craven Cottage on Sunday with a fairly poor record on the road, so there is definitely the possibility of another shut-out on Fulham’s Premier League finale.

The Magpies are bottom of the league for their three big chances created in their last six away matches.

Furthermore, Bryan himself ranks second among Fulham players for key passes (four) under Scott Parker, suggesting he has the potential for some attacking returns.

Any crosses into Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.3m) could be particularly effective given Newcastle’s vulnerability in the air.

Also, left-back Bryan tops the charts among Fulham players for his 12 successful tackles since Parker took charge, indicating the potential for bonus too.

Right then ladies and gents, I need your help holding on to a very slender mini-league lead!

Second and third are 6 and 10 pts behind. Both have triple Liverpool defence, I only have Trent. One has Zaha, one has Milivojevic. Otherwise fairly similar with the likes of Jimenez, Aguero, Sterling, Ederson, Pogba, Deulofeu.

    Ederson
    TAA Valery Cathcart
    Sterling Pog Deulofeu Jota
    Aguero Wilson Jimenez

    (Ryan, Son, Duffy, Bennett)

I’m considering: Virgil, Mane, Long, Redmond, Milivojevic. Want just Virgil and Mane but can’t afford. Could get Long to afford it but -8.

Is it worth a -4 hit for Van Dijk to block my rivals? Guarantees -4 rather than Cathcart and missing out on a Van Dijk haul.

Thanks for any ideas and good luck!

1 point ahead in my ML. He’s already made his transfers leading to these differentials

Me: TAA, Jota and one more player
    Him: VVD, Deulofeu, Vardy

    Do I get:
    A) Redmond
    B) Fraser
    C) Any of the two above and Vardy, for a hit. That would equal Vardy out, take me 3 points back and give him Jimenez as a differential instead of Vardy

Well yes, but Salah is one of the few players in the league proven to be capable of big scores. Fit (presumably), at home against average opposition, in must win game. Potential to wreck people's MLs...

Liverpool just scored 3 away to Newcastle, which I thought would be tough. They scored 4 against Barcelona. And Wolves, while good within their own level, are not Real Madrid or Bayern Munich. I'm not saying it will be a rout, I'm just saying Liverpool are the most likely Premier League team at the moment to score lots of goals, and Salah is a star.

I also don't believe the principle of having 'cover' from one team works!

FWIW, I have Mane and TAA, and will probably do Hazard and Doherty to Salah and somebody for -4. Just in case 🙂

          • 8 Years

It sounds like you made up your mind from the beginning (-:
No doubt Liverpool are in good form but this is about taking hits on the last day of the season when you already have cover, and yes ‘cover’ is a real thing. Beginning of last month (before salah started scoring again) Mane and salah were on very similar overall points and you could argue Mane was better value based on price vs points output. Mane is still very capable of getting goals and will no doubt be involved if Salah goes on a monster haul.
But if you feel that strongly just take a hit and get salah in!

I have a 35 point lead in my main mini league which should be enough but you never know…. My current team with 1FT and 0.4M ITB is:

    Lloris
    Bednarek, Shaw, Laporte
    Pogba, Sterling, Mane, Doucoure
    Aguero, Jimenez, Gray
    Subs: Foster, Bennett, Dunk, Son

I am reasonably happy with my defense. So, I guess my main dilemma this week is Son>? and play 352 or Gray>? and play 343. Unfortunately none of the options really fill me with much confidence. I could ditch both for a -4 and get something like Zaha + Fraser/Milo/Maddison/Moura/Martial but it doesn’t inspire me either.

Anyone else thinking about a 1 week punt on Shaqiri/Origi?

14pts behind in my Mini League. We both have Sterling/Mane/Hazard/Laporte. He has Aguero. Is it worth a -4 for me to take Robbo/Hazard out for Salah (C), who i cant imagine him getting in,and Kompany?

I see your dilemma, it’s a tough call with a 14 point gap to make up because another hit means 18 before the whistle blows, It’s highly unlikely he will take a hit looking at that team.

I see the logic in the Salah/Kompany move and if there were more gameweeks to follow then it would make more

Sorry hit the send button (-:
Follow on... it would make more sense.

Robbo still might play according to Klopp so I’d be tempted to keep as this offers a good differential if he does play.

I wouldn’t be keen on taking a hit in your position, with one more good differential and nailing the captain it could/should be enough to plug the gap.

This may sound a bit maverick but have you considered Origi in for Jimi? I personally think he will start after the weekend and no firmino so this offers another pool attacking option without taking a hit.

Alternatively Hazard to Bilva or Dilva to boost your city coverage

It’s a tough one with such small margins!
