Scout Notes

How the final day of the season unfolded from a Fantasy perspective

Our final Scout Notes article of the season is a briefer-than-usual affair, recapping the events of Gameweek 38.

Despite all the interest in Raheem Sterling (£11.7m) and Sergio Aguero (£12.0m), it was the lesser-owned Fantasy assets who won the league for Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.

Riyad Mahrez (£8.2m) and David Silva (£8.5m) proved to be the heroes as they were the only options to record more than one attacking return.

The former Leicester City midfielder scored the goal to put the title out of Liverpool’s reach, 25 minutes after his corner was nodded in by Aymeric Laporte (£6.3m).

That strike was welcomed by the owners of the centre-back and helped compensate for a lack of a clean sheet.

Despite their incredible record of ten shut-outs in the last 12 matches and Brighton’s struggles in front of goal, it was the Seagulls who actually took the lead at the Amex.

Glenn Murray (£6.1m) was the man to break the deadlock, converting Pascal Groß‘s (£6.7m) corner after 26 minutes.

It mattered little to City in the end though, with Aguero netting an immediate equaliser and setting Pep Guardiola’s side on their way to winning a second successive title.

City’s win meant that the result at Anfield was irrelevant to the outcome of the Premier League title race.

Owners of Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.8m) and Sadio Mane (£10.3m) had a field day, though, with both Liverpool players delivering 15-points hauls.

Mane converted two Alexander-Arnold crosses either side of half-time and Liverpool went on to record their 21st clean sheet of the season – no Premier League club registered more.

Mohamed Salah (£13.2m), passed fit to start along with Andrew Robertson (£6.7m), blanked for the first time in seven Gameweeks and never really looked like scoring, despite his obvious desperation to secure a second successive Golden Boot award.

Talking of disappointments, Manchester United signed off for the season in inglorious fashion, slumping to a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of relegated Cardiff City.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing (£4.8m) was the unlikely hero, first converting from the penalty spot after himself being felled and then tapping in from a Josh Murphy (£4.8m) pass.

Paul Pogba (£8.6m) and Marcus Rashford (£7.3m) blanked again, while Mason Greenwood (£4.5m) was unable to deliver an attacking return on his full debut despite 15 penalty box touches and seven attempts on goal – two of which were big chances.

Luke Shaw (£5.1m) wasn’t part of the matchday squad.

The real humdinger of the day, as perhaps anticipated, was at Selhurst Park.

There were a grand total of eight goals scored between Crystal Palace and Bournemouth and naturally, despite posting really encouraging underlying statistics in the previous four away matches, Callum Wilson (£6.9m) was not involved in a single one.

Neither was Ryan Fraser (£6.3m), who seems to only ever deliver when his colleague Wilson does.

The real winners of that match were owners of Wilfried Zaha (£6.7m), who recorded three assists and was a constant menace throughout.

His haul was accompanied by a Michy Batshuayi (£6.2m) brace, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.6m), despite conceding three times, notched a rare assist.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.8m) clawed his way to a shared Golden Boot award with two goals at Burnley and finished as the top-scoring FPL forward of 2018/19 in doing so.

The Gabonese striker was the lucky winner of Unai Emery’s rotation roulette as the Arsenal manager shuffled the pack after European commitments – Alexandre Lacazette (£9.4m) and Sead Kolasinac (£4.9m) among the players to drop to the bench.

Ashley Barnes (£5.6m) relieved the glory days of the winter period with one last goal of the season to ensure the Gunners’ defensive record on the road finished in true form.

There was a rare goal for youngster Eddie Nketiah (£5.0m) in the closing stages.

Arsenal’s north London rivals drew 2-2 with Everton, with those who hung onto Christian Eriksen (£9.2m) rewarded when the Dane scored the game’s fourth goal from a direct free-kick.

Several lesser-owned Fantasy assets were among the points, with Theo Walcott (£5.9m) and Cenk Tosun (£6.4m) – in for the injured Richarlison (£6.4m) and Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.4m) – on the scoresheet for the Toffees.

Erik Lamela (£5.9m) claimed the assists for both of Spurs’ goals, the first of which was an Eric Dier (£4.7m) strike on two minutes.

Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.4m) signed off for 2018/19 with an assist for Walcott’s goal, with this campaign being the Iceland international’s most successful season from an FPL points’ perspective.

There wasn’t to be a ninth clean sheet in 11 Gameweeks for Marco Silva’s defence, however, while Seamus Coleman (£5.2m) was absent through injury.

Perhaps the most underwhelming spectacle of the afternoon took place at the King Power Stadium.

It was the only match in Gameweek 38 to feature no goals, despite Jamie Vardy‘s (£9.0m) impressive form in recent home fixtures.

There had been suggestions that Chelsea would look sluggish after playing 120 minutes and needing penalties against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday night, but they were arguably the more creative team in the opening stages.

Eden Hazard (£11.0m) was left on the bench and emerged for a short display in the second half in which he contributed little.

Vardy had a few opportunities to score but could not convert and was at the very least more composed than Gonzalo Higuaín (£9.0m), who was off target with several clear chances.

An error from the recalled Angus Gunn (£4.3m) cost owners of Southampton’s backline a clean sheet, with Alex Pritchard (£4.8m) pouncing on the Saints’ goalkeeper’s loose touch to hand Huddersfield a deserved point.

Nathan Redmond (£5.5m) had earlier put the hosts ahead with a fine effort from distance – that, indeed, was his only shot of the game.

James Ward-Prowse (£5.1m) was inches from an eighth goal of the season but his 46th-minute effort was tipped onto the bar.

Newcastle made a mockery of the interest in Sergio Rico (£4.4m) at Craven Cottage as they dominated Fulham.

Two quick-fire goals for the Magpies in the first half put it beyond the Cottagers and Scott Parker’s side never really threatened Martin Dubravka‘s (£5.0m) goal, with Ryan Babel (£5.6m) only coming on as a 65th-minute substitute.

Mid-price FPL forwards Ayoze Perez (£6.1m) and Salomon Rondon (£5.9m) each bagged a goal.

The feared pre-FA Cup final rotation didn’t materialise at Vicarage Road, with Javi Gracia naming a full-strength side for the match against West Ham.

He might have wished he didn’t, as the Hornets slumped to a 4-1 defeat and saw Jose Holebas (£4.8m) shown a straight red card early in the second half.

Gerard Deulofeu (£5.7m) at least rewarded his remaining owners with a consolation goal.

Watford haven’t kept a clean sheet since Gameweek 26 and their vulnerability at the back showed, with Mark Noble (£4.8m) grabbing a brace – one goal coming from the spot – and Marko Arnautovic (£6.7m) registering his fourth attacking return in three Gameweeks.

Michail Antonio (£6.8m) delivered a hat-trick of assists while Felipe Anderson (£6.8m) recovered from illness to record what was only his fourth attacking return of 2019.

Some statistical breakdown of the top 15 players based on Points per 90 minutes and more (only including players who have played at least 1710 (half of the available) minutes this season)

    Points Per 90 minutes ((Points/minutes played) x 90)

    Rondon 0.87
    Wilson 0.878
    Calvert-Lewin 0.87
    Pickford 0.86

Big Hitters Points Per Million (Those players who played over 1710 minutes, whose final or starting price was 9m+)
    Mane 10.3m – 22.43ppm
    Hazard 11m – 21.64ppm
    Sterling 11.7m – 20ppm
    Salah 13.2m - 19.2ppm
    Vardy 9m – 19.3ppm

    Kane 12.6m – 12.7ppm
    Lukaku 10.7m – 10.75ppm
    Alli 8.8m – 10.68ppm

    Notable (and some obvious!) Conclusions:
    - The majority of the most expensive players actually delivered the best points per 90 minutes played
    - Defenders & Goalkeepers again provided the best value, surprisingly the Everton defence did notably well for their price
    - Liverpool defence provided superb value
    - Spurs big hitters really disappointed
    - If Man City attacker were rotated less they would score significantly higher given their Points Per 90 Minutes played
    - Bournemouth attackers were generally good value
    - Jiminez tops almost all these when taking his 5.5m starting price

The game is legitimately just much harder now. I honestly believe top 10k is the new top 1k.

Haven’t done much different in any season, in fact I try harder now than I did when I could get top 1k. It’s just the competition is better now.

Not great because I was a casual player before 2013/14 and often just picked a GW1 team and then never looked at it.

HoF is kind of a flawed system since someone who started playing in 2013/14 and had the same history as me since 2013/14 would have a much higher HoF rank than me.

Yes but I feel it should also completely disregard outlier seasons that occurred 5+ years ago. My HoF is currently being brought down by seasons when I was 15-18 and just created a team without much thought. I think a friend even hacked by team one of those years... :p

Some observations on my own season that may or may not be helpful to others:

    - I have been too quick to get rid of players just because their fixtures have turned. At various points on the Scoutcast it has been assumed to be a given that a player's usefulness is over despite their continued form. AWB is one of those who I got for 4.0, sold for Bennett (terrible move) and never managed to bring back because of the price rise, albeit only 0.5m. I paid too much attention to this rather than playing my own game. I also sold both Sterling and Sané ahead of the Liverpool match when their fixtures turned and never got a chance to bring either back, aside from on FH.

    - From what I have seen, and this is only anecdotal really, the players who did best deployed their first wildcard late.

This has to be taken with a pinch of salt because players who started well didn't necessarily need to WC too early, but in the case of me and my main ML rival, who ended up beating me by 180 points, we were neck and neck in December, and playing his when he did helped him to hoover up the likes of Son and Pogba and stride ahead into an unassailable lead.

I wildcarded early, when I didn't really need to, and in an international break in the outdated view that this would help my TV. as a result I wasted the best chip in the game.

    - I have always ignored ownership and I have only very slowly come around to the idea that playing the percentages is the most sensible strategy. Whilst it is true that 10m+ players represent the poorest value, I have learned that the ones that other people have and, crucially, are captaining have to be covered, at least while they are returning reasonable amounts of points.

It also means that if you have the two most popular captains in any given gameweek, even if you cap the wrong one, you will still get half of the points of the correct captain.

I avoided Aguero early on in the mistaken belief that he would share too many minutes with Jesus. Whilst the logic was sound, it didn't pan out like that and I was far too slow to react and recover.

So I will take a disappointing OR (89k) and hopefully learn from my mistakes. At least I'm a consistent dullard - in the last five years my ranks are 63k, 56k, 12k, 38k, 89k !

Well played everyone, especially to all of the thousands of you who finished above me, and special congratulations to anyone who finished in the top 10k in the toughest season yet 🙂

After a good start It was mostly a season of template points and misfiring chips (apart from Kun TC in GW25), culminating in 5 red arrows and a 21.8K finish. I can claim credit for consistency, however, I was inside the top 40K for all 38 weeks. Nice bunching, as Sid Waddell would have said.

I think that Salah haul against cherries made or broke many a mini league. people were transferring him out in droves on wildcards because he wasnt getting double figures every week even though he was ticking along very nicely.

    1. Wrong Captain Choice - Ag i…
      • 14 Years

Yeah but people also stubbornly kept Salah during his barren run.
Some people only focused on 'underlying stats'.
'But the underlying stats say....' etc
As if they are gospel without looking at other variables such as body language and the manner in which the shots are taken.
      Straight at the keeper?
      A crisp shot?
A shot for the sake of it?
      Running into traffic?

I was one of those who sold Salah before his Bournmouth hattrick. I then got him back and sold him again
But I made up ground by not having him through his barren run. Got him back late in the season then when he was starting to look confident.

I noticed many were terrified to sell Salah bascially because of risk aversion. But those funds could of been spent elsewhere.

My biggest success this season was to get Pogba in when OGS was named as an interim manager. Then captaining him when he scored a hattie, and kicking him out right when he went dry.

Another good decision was to start with and hold on to Robbo, who ended up being the only guy to stay in my team all season.

Just listed many mistakes I did to another thread, but these two decisions I'm happy with.

There are no sly fpl digs and banter anymore on the scoutcast.

No Hazard next season will remove one possible selection headache.

I know good players come and good players go, but it often takes them a season or two to settle and Hazard has proven to be a high-scoring but frustratingly unpredictable pick. It will be nice not to have to worry about him anymore (from an FPL perspective only, of course!).

was strongly considering the following hits in addition to my 2fts yesterday

    a) eriksen > pogba (-4)

    b) eriksen + robbo > salah(c) + 4.5m def (-8)

thankgod I avoided both and just captained mane!!!

      Early July I think.
It makes no difference anyway, better off just avoiding it until two/three weeks before new season.
The Pre-Season info has been gathered and new signings assessed.

    Prices next season:

    Robertson: 7.5m
    TAA: 7.5m
    VVD: 7m

there has only been 1 def around that range in the 12 yrs I've played. 7.5m is a bit steep I think.

I think there will be some serious hikes in defence. Would you touch Digne if he was priced at 6.0m? Think there may be some value in Chelsea defence next season.

Digne will be a bargain @ 6m if Eve start off where they finished towards the end of this season. Digne had some of the best attacking stats around in the PL.

I’m way less experienced than you so these are real and not rhetorical questions.

Has there been a season before where defensive assets were so obviously such good value?

Might FPL decide to discourage everyone piling into the same 3 players? As it stands the one disincentive would be the decision between Mo and Mane - and Vvd I guess.

Ivanovic and Baines were gold at their peak. I think Baines was 7.5 thanks to his penalty duties and Ivanovic was 7.0, might remember wrong though.

No use getting our panties in a knot 24 hrs after the season has ended.

I'm just pointing out that it would have a serious impact if the def's get hiked up to 7-7.5m. Most managers will probably look elsewhere I reckon. Maybe not?

I got the feeling FPL gods have tried to increase the pool of players available to the 6m odd managers to try and grow interest (and obviously revenue). One way of doing it was to price the keepers and def's more reasonably.

I get your point, but Robbo and VVD are the first defenders to ever break 200 points. TAA is not far behind them in total points and actually averages more points per game than them (plus he's young and improving). That justifies them having the highest price for defenders in FPL history.

Imo TAA > Robbo and I'd pay 7.5m for him assuming there weren't other cheaper options that were as good.

        1. Christina.

Going to be interesting for sure.

I'm having Laporte for sure. Doubt he will be more than 6.5m. Doubt I will be able to afford another def priced around 7.5m! But lets see...

2011/12 was the golden era for paying through the nose for a defender.

      Vidic - 8.0
      Baines - 8.0
      Terry - 7.5
      Cole - 7.5
      Vermaelen - 7.0
      Johnson - 7.0

        Other 7m+ defenders:

        2012/13
        ------------
        Kompany - 7.5
        Baines - 7.0
        Vidic - 7.0

        2013/14
        ------------
        Baines - 7.5
        Vertonghen - 7.0

        2014/15
        ------------
        Baines - 7.0
        Ivanovic - 7.0
        Coleman - 7.0

        2015/16
        ------------
        Ivanovic - 7.0
        Terry - 7.0

I've probably missed someone but there have definitely been a few over the years.

Theoretically yes but one thing the above highlights to me is how the pricing of defenders has been tweaked over the years - a definite compression a bit like they did with goalkeepers.

That said, I do think TAA and Robertson are special cases.

Thanks for everyone’s input on here this year.
    Special mentions to:
Amey, Piggissimus, Captain choice and Flapjack!

Still struggling to break top 100k, but improving each year. I seem to fluff my captain choice a fair bit, which costs me, but always learn each year.

    Question to all::
Assuming not much changes in terms of teams and players next season, Who are the first 5 players in your team? (Aside from the “obvious” big hitters)...

    Think I’d try and include:
TAA, Valery, Tielemans, Jota, Duelofeu to start with.

I am glad you found some of the guff I post beneficial!

Rueben Loftus Cheek, Kevin De Bruyne are two players with the longest names who are hopefully under-priced.

Henderson could be great value if he is given the more attacking midfield role.

I am also keeping an eye on Westwood from Burnley - the amount of times that fella popped up with an assist or a goal/ or bonus..
He is really under the radar.

Shane Long will be another interesting one.
Will he keep up his form? Will he remain at the club?
So his price will be interesting.

Also I will be keeping an eye on loan players like Tammy Abrahams etc

Many thanks for all the advice guys..
Overall happy with the last lap as the chips worked well for a change.
Only upset is due to poor transfers in GW38 (Pogba and Vardy) dropped to 25K from 18K.
Could have gone to 10K with the right moves.
But then I should be happy from my position pre chips and also that I won my ML (yes just with 25K).
