What Man City’s FA Cup win means for FPL next season

There were a number of implications for Fantasy Premier League from Saturday’s FA Cup final win for Manchester City.

There were impacts on both Manchester United and Liverpool as well as Wolves as they prepare for the 2019/20 season.

Firstly, the victory for Manchester City ensured that Watford did not claim a place in European competition by winning the trophy for themselves.

Had the Hornets won the FA Cup they would have qualified for the Europa League.

However, their defeat ensured that Wolves will enter into the second qualifying round of the competition, which starts on July 25.

That will be their first foray in competitive continental action since 1980 and may have a huge impact on their pre-season plans, as well as their points potential in the early stages of 2019/20.

Burnley were the Premier League team whose season began in July last year and it was widely seen as a key reason why they struggled in the first few months domestically.

Unless Wolves significantly increase the size of their squad, balancing domestic and European competitions could prove difficult for them and impinge on their Fantasy assets, many of whom will have received price hikes after an impressive season.

The other knock-on effect of Watford’s defeat is that Manchester United have been spared entry into the Europa League at such an early stage.

Had the Hornets claimed that automatic spot in the group stages, the Red Devils would have been forced to start their campaign on July 25 instead, which might have caused them considerable problems ahead of the Premier League starting in August.

Finally, the fact that Manchester City have won both the league and FA Cup means that league runners-up Liverpool will be their opponents in the Community Shield next season.

Had Watford won the FA Cup, we would have been set for a rematch between the two sides, which would have arguably been less useful for Fantasy managers.

Given how much Manchester City and Liverpool have dominated Fantasy football this season, they are naturally going to be the key sides to weigh up ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

Therefore, having a chance to see them both line up with probably full-strength sides will give us an excellent litmus test of whether their options are worth the money.

For example, not that many managers were invested in Sergio Aguero last summer but seeing how dominant Manchester City were in the Community Shield final alerted us to what he could offer – and led to him being highly-owned in the opening weeks of the campaign.

So that match always has the potential to be very informative for Fantasy managers ahead of the campaign, provided both teams put out their strongest teams.

Considering the rivalry between Manchester City and Liverpool over the last 12 months, we can now be fairly certain that Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp will give us just that.

Having seen how complicated Burnley's early Europa involvement made the start of their PL season, I feel like avoiding all Wolves' players in the beginning.

    2nd qualifying round: 25/7 & 1/8
    3rd q.r.: 8/8 & 15/8
    Playoff r.: 22/8 & 29/8

    Gw1: 11/8
    Gw2: 18/8
    Gw3: 25/8
    Gw4: 1/9

That's a good point, especially as Wolves have a comparitively small squad.

      It’d seem so.

But the parallel with Burnley isn’t exact. Wolves will presumably have more cash to spend than Burnley did - despite making their loans permanent. It wouldn’t surprise me if they followed last season’s model of getting players like Jonny and Jimmy in on loan.

So their effective first team squad may expand but then again that may not be great fantasy news.

Possibly. Personally think the treble this season plus the anti-City feeling from UEFA re a CL ban in 2020/21 will embolden the owners to go out and spend big to try to win everything next season.

That means buying a LB, a CB and a DM.

      GK: Ederson, Bravo
      LB: Mendy, [New LB]
      RB: Walker, Danilo
CB: Laporte, [New CB], Stones, Otamendi
      DM: Fernandinho, [New DM]
      CM: KDB, Silva, Foden, Gundogan
      RM: Bernardo, Mahrez
      LM: Sterling, Sane
      FW: Aguero, Jesus

Delph, Kompany and Mangala will be allowed to leave.

Given Liverpool must be looking at someone to back Robbo up, the left back market could be where it’s at this time. Who are the hot candidates?

Is that the side Chilwell plays? He’d come at quite a price I’d guess.

On a sort of related note I wonder what will happen with Wilson who has been tearing it up at Derby - he’s one of theirs no? Perhaps Liverpool will have a really quiet window and mostly promote from within.

There should be some rule about minimum playing time for players above a certain price. Its pathetic what clubs like City do with players like Mahrez who would be nailed starters in every team except City and Liverpool.

I will absolutely hate it if Pool buy Chilwell. He could actually nail down a starting spot for City though.

I half wonder whether they might make a surprise move for Zaha. I think I read Klopp is apparently an admirer.

It seems offbeat but if you regard both Mane and Mo has cf options then an extra wide man might have a role if he wants to change things up during a game. He’d. E a nice match for Mahrez at City as the 60 mill plus sub who never gets a game anyway.

I'm pretty sure he alao played in the middle occasionally, but playing as a winger doesn't really complement his strengths. It probably wouldn't be that hard for Liverpool to buy him to be fair, I imagine Leverkusen wouldn't say no to +£40 million pounds or so any day of the week

There should be a rule against loaning out players to teams in the same division in my opinion.
Clubs like Chelsea have often bought players that their rivals wanted, and then loaned them out to other PL teams so that they can play against Chelsea's rivals but not against Chelsea, thus giving Chelsea an unfair advantage.
Other clubs may be guilty of doing the same thing, but I'm sure that in the PL Chelsea are the biggest culprits.

    Fun fact:

    - Sergio Aguero scored 54 of his 201 points this season in 3 games
    - By the power of maths we can therefore deduce that in the other 35 games of this season (of which he didn’t play in 5) he scored 147 points, or 4.9 PPG

He’s an explosive little bugger isn’t he

    Morning all,

I run my own little mini league for work colleagues and friends but after several years of doing the same thing I'm looking to try and freshen it up a little. I run a seperate head to head competition as part of it too. One big problem I have is that around half the league seem to give up in the second half of the season. Any ideas on things to do to keep it interesting? Anyone out there run anything interesting? Thanks in advance,

              Say there’s a 1 in 20 chance at winning £10. It’s 50p of equity.

I feel the bigger money at the top makes it more fun. Unless you go higher buy in to motivate and remove the people who don’t care. Personally I feel those guys are great.. hand you their cash in August and then do the same every year. It’s like an overlay in poker

Depends why you run it. If its just to make money then sure the drop outs are great. But I run mine to encourage interaction between departments throughout the office. At the end of the day you get out what you put in, encouraging engagement by talking to everyone in your league is the easiest way to keep them engaged, its not about the prizes, its about the joy in defending your team.

In my mini league everyone can pick whatever team you like for the start of the season. Once Gameweek 1 has begun, we fill in a google docs spreadsheet listing all our players under each manager. For the whole rest of the season, you can only sign players that no one else has got.

It’s almost like a draft league, but you can make as many transfers as you like, whenever you like, just so long as no one else already owns that player. In general, this has made our league really quite competitive and stops any templates forming as the season unfolds.

It obviously stops you being competitive in the overall

game, but mini leagues are where the real joy/ real competition lies.

I imagine this would only realistically work for smallish mini leagues, we only ever have 6-9 managers and it becomes really difficult to find players worth signing when everyone’s ‘active’.

If you’re playing for cash, then having tiered prizes might help, even if it’s just second place pays nothing and last place pays double? If there’s a financial penalty for setting up ghost teams and doing nothing all season, then people might stay more involved.

Got unlucky that I didn't beat 39k this season. Final 2 weeks knocked me down 25k places or so. Ended on 66k.
Pretty happy with the year overall though.

I only got 157, with only a little help from my Bench Boost, but my OR rose from 475k to 276k.
Captain Sanchez (27*2), Kane (31) and Ozil (15) were my only players to get double figure returns.

Those who also owned the likes of Azpilicueta (20), Coutinho (19), Son (19), Jesus (19) and Giroud (18) and triple captained Sanchez would have scored rather more.

I looked into how goalkeeper rotation did (home and away) vs just having a set and forget gk. Didn't include any combos that would include a gk from the top 6.

Order from most points to least points (by team since some had more than one gk play for them):
    Cardiff (154)
    Bournemouth and Palace (153)
    Palace (149)
    West Ham (143)
    Leicester and Wolves (132)
    Newcastle (131)
    Brighton and Newcastle (130)
    Cardiff and Watford (130)
    Watford (129)
    Burnley and Huddersfield (129)
    Burnley (127)
    Wolves (125)
    Southampton and West Ham (123)
    Southampton (122)
    Leicester (120)
    Brighton (119)
    Bournemouth (118)
    Huddersfield (110)

Average points from rotating two: 133
Average points from just 1: 129

So rotating home and away does not seem to be worth it.

I also looked at how rotating two gks to avoid the top 6 would do, even though it meant not having as many home games.

I looked at rotating palace and newcastle. I tried to pick who I'd pick before the gw and not just whoever scored more points.
This ended up getting 186 points, much more than any of the others and even more than Alisson.

The reason it did so well is because their opponent has a much bigger effect on how many points they score than home and away.

The 12 teams that I looked at averaged:
3.84 vs non top 6 at home
3.68 vs non top 6 away
2.61 vs top 6 at home
    2.56 vs top 6 away

What goalkeepers are you thinking of getting next year? Are you going to get a premium one? A cheap set and forget? Rotate home and away? Or rotate two trying to avoid the top 6?

Had started 17/18 with DDG and it was going well.. until I downgraded to 4.5 and it turned bad.
This season I started with Pickford who wasn't doing well, leading once again to go for 4.5s rotation which went bad again.
I feel like going Ederson set & forget, even if he costs 6.
If I don't change my mind, it'll probably be
      Ederson + 4.0
      Robbo Laporte TAA Digne Pereira

      Good work

Guaita and Dubravka could work nicely next season too you’d imagine if Rafa is still in place. That’s two sides who can defend and will get a decent number of cs. But I’d imagine they’d come in not much cheaper than Allison/Ederson and 4.0.

I’m being tempted by Ederson as a comparatively budget way into City defence and reckon I won’t often want more than 2 City outplayers - but that depends a bit on Laporte pricing.

I’m surely missing something here as most are set on budget options. But didnt gks dominate value for season stats? Doesn’t that make them a target for quality?

      • 7 Years

      Probably Fabianski set and forget.

Used Lascelles and AWB for a defensive rotation on the basis that you want to avoid Top 6 teams. Will look for something similar again.

This season you need a rotation that avoids the Top 6 + Everton + Leicester.

Under Puel, Leicester were okay to get CS against. But since Rodgers has arrived they score a lot more goals.

Is an overall rank of 47,353 very bad? I am really disappointed and frustrated. Last year I had an overall rank of 8,602.

But you also need a lot of luck with this game. For example Luke Shaw seemed a good alternative for the last two games against Huddersfield and Cardiff. However he got only a single point from these two games.

Fixtures are little use without any form.
United had the fixtures but very poor form and were also likely to rotate, so I would never have gone for Luke Shaw.

Finishing top 10k every season is not easy - very few achieve it.
47,353 may not be brilliant, but it certainly isn't very bad.

Curious for views on Everton and defence. What changed so that they became cs kings? Is it sustainable next season?

I may have this wrong but my memory is that Silva actually managed to make Hull’s defensive record worse when he was there and likewise Watford were leaky in his time.

That was what I thought. But what went right in that run at the end of the season? Was there a shift in tactics? Or was it that his players simply got used to his system?

He seems a hard manager to judge if only because he’s moved on so quickly. My instinct for non prime defenders is to back a manager - both Roy and Rafa would seem likely to produce consistent defensive returns if you’re looking at cs and not just flying wing backs.
