4 things I would change about FPL for next season

Much of FPL is working, but there are four things I would change for next season.

1. Partial Clean Sheet Bonus

Justice for George Friend! There’s nothing more frustrating than losing clean sheet points because your player played just less than 60 minutes. I call it the “Christensen syndrome”. It’s an absolute sickener. One way to soften the blow is to introduce a partial clean sheet bonus like Telegraph Fantasy Football offer. The new rule would be very simple:

  • 4 points = not conceding a goal whilst on the pitch and playing at least 60 minutes.
  • 2 points = not conceding a goal whilst on the pitch and playing at least 30 minutes.

2. An Extra Point For Consecutive Goals In A Match.

How does this work? If Aguero scores a hat-trick in a game, he gets 4 points for his first goal; 5 points for his second goal; and 6 points for his third goal. This rewards players who have an exceptional performance in a single game. After all, it is much harder to score 3 goals in 90 minutes than it is to score just a single goal.

3. Reduce The Minus BPS For Shots Off Target

Is attacking intent and forward-thinking play really something that you should be penalised for? Salah is famous for this – lots of goal attempts, many off target, hence the lack of bonus. Exciting players who go for goal shouldn’t get less BPS than unadventurous, sideways pass merchants who are dull to watch. I would tweak the bonus points system and remove the -1 BPS for an off target attempt. Or maybe introduce a +1 BPS for every shot on target. If you get penalised for a shot OFF target, then why not balance things out and reward players for a shot ON target?

4. Cool New Chips

I love the chips and would happily see more of them added to the game. During double gameweek season, they get the blood pumping and the heart racing and make for some exhilarating gameweeks. Norwegian FPL has some great chips, such as “Two Captains”, were both your captain and vice-captain score double points.

The one I really like is the old “Park The Bus” chip. This provides double clean sheet points for your starting defenders in a single gameweek. I would also add your starting goalkeeper to this. This would require a lot of planning (which is always worth encouraging in the game), as you look for a gameweek with a number of teams with a favourable home fixture and a likely clean sheet. You then you plan your premium and budget defender transfers around this to take full advantage with a 5-at-the-back formation.

I would try to break 'template teams' (everybody has 7-8 same players and captain choice is pretty much the only way to succeed or fail) with some rule changes. For example:
    - no wildcard in first 10 gameweeks and only 1 per season
    - double def points for one gw and maybe similar chips for midfielders and strikers

I think template teams tend to arise more from reading these pages than due to any FPL factor. People post RMTs and people often don't rate the players that are not in the template, which causes all teams to become similar.

You cannot beat the crowd by being the same as everyone else.

The best way to destroy the template us to price up every single player who had significant ownership in top 100k last season. I.e robbo and taa to 7.5 or even 8.0.

I hope they do it, template teams are so boring.

    1. Not the worst idea but a defender doesn't deserve 3 points for 30-59 for no goals. Jarvish's idea on the last page of a point per 20 minutes is a bit tricky after 60 for 3 points then 80 for 4 given it's 4 after 60 right now.

    2. Enough points given especially with bonus for consecutive goals. Next you'll want consecutive assists.

    3. Salah is the top point scorer for the last 2 seasons, does he really need more points?

    4. More chips equals more luck so no from me.

Agreed. Regarding #4, the game is so much better when luck is less of a factor. I think in the first half of the season, when most managers are still holding on to all their chips, is the most challenging and most rewarding period. The gains (and losses) are more incremental, and you don't tend to massively over- or under-achieve based on huge swings, 'Hail Mary' plays, DGW shenanigans, etc. You have to be disciplined yet proactive, and make very smart transfers.

Later in the season it becomes far more of a lottery. There are countless examples of this, but just one off the top of the head was anyone owning KDB (like me) for the DGW when he got injured after 25 minutes for 1 point. Sure, it's just bad luck and that happens all season, but it's magnified in a DGW when you've got 9m+ tied up in a differential while many of your rivals have the likes of Jota, Deulofeu, Eriksen etc in that spot, and less than 20% of the way into the GW your player is done. You can't fix it, you can't take a hit before the next match, you can't cover your opponents in any way like you would in a regular GW. These are the kinds of situations I hate because I feel like they bring good managers and poor managers closer together.

Give me 38 GWs of hard slog, no chips whatsoever, 1 Wildcard per season, and I'd be so happy. (And yes, I'm a little bitter because it was GW30 onwards when things got crazy, chips were flying around and my awesome season unravelled.)

Get the lottery part for sure.
If chasing, you can use the TC on someone the leader doesn't own and hope for the best.

1 Wildcard a season is quite tough on those who start badly. Would probably make the game more template as mistakes or punts/risks take longer to recover from.

Yes, and I think those types of decisions get made a lot (understandably of course) and if enough of these gambles pay off, chasers can catch you. Would they take the same risks or punts if they weren't chasing? Unlikely. I'm not saying it's Mario Kart levels of assistance to those at the back of the field, but the more random elements such as chips do help to narrow the gap in many cases. I prefer the idea of FPL as a battle of attrition. My proudest moments are small decisions, well thought out double transfers for a hit that really pay off etc. Perhaps that's because I have never hit even an assist on TC chip let alone a haul. And my FH teams somehow fail despite looking absolutely incredible on paper.

I suppose you're right about the Wildcard. Having the extra is probably a good thing. But I would like to see any changes that encourage people to be more active in the transfer market. Strategic hits are massively underrated in my opinion, and maybe if people had less 'get out of jail free' cards they'd be incentivised to take action rather than lose points over multiple weeks with a suboptimal team and call it bad luck. Just my opinion though.

As I see it The luck chips are TC BB and FH as they are all single week chips that can fire or backfire spectacularly. WC by contrast is a long term play that can have a short term affect and helps strategic players

There was a suggestion that we should be offered a raft of chips from which to choose. I like the idea of keeping the chips as is but allowing only 3 of 5 to be played. That still allows gambles on TC - and a certain amount of jeopardy makes the game fun. But it might restore balance by rewarding long term gains to strategic players who favoured WC over single week punts.

One benefit of reducing the number of chips this way would be that DGWs would less “ chip fest” - there wouldn’t be enough chips to hit all the DGWs and bgws

I also agree on your point about the strategic hit.

A refinement of this idea is to keep chips as is but to allow players to play 3 chips of their choice at any point.

This would add variance to strategy. It would be possible for instance to try and hit all the big doubles with TC for example but pay with extra transfers having no WC.

It could even reward conservatives who dislike hits as they could concentrate on the lucker chips in the knowledge that their teams were so well set up and their transfer strategy so well thought out that they wouldn’t need to WC more than once!

I agree with this actually. WC is the one that still has meaning and impact over multiple GWs, and still takes strategic management to use well and benefit. The others are a lottery.

And yes that suggestion is excellent, I like it a lot. Bring some of the strategy. At the moment with the chips it's too easy obvious to follow the same routine as 90% of managers and either get lucky or not. It would add a layer of skill if you had to consider which chips to use at all.

For me, I just get dismayed when I see weeks and weeks of grafting undone by a successful or unsuccessful use of chips. I worked hard for the lead I gained last season, and in many ways when I saw it getting whittled away I didn't always feel it was due to outstanding fpl management as much as it was a few huge isolated chip-based hauls.

on 4 personally I'd change it to TC & BB only allowed in a SGW.
      Don't need more chips.
As far as point changes don't see the need to increase amount of pts on offer unless possibly there is a sensible way to increase the appeal of defensive midfielders thereby expanding the player pool & maybe lessening impact of template teams.

I would eliminate All Chips for world ranking purposes and raise the cost of extra trades to 5 or 6 points

    But

Would create a menu of chips that mini leagues can pick from. These chips would only affect H2H scores but not total season points.

This would eliminate lucky turds from equation

I don't understand how raising the cost of transfers would make the game better at all? It's already too template and predictable. If transfers can never be justified then people will lock in a template looking team and stick to it no matter what, because the alternative is simply too expensive to risk.

I think transfer activity should be encouraged. We would then see more variety, more bold play, more willingness to mix up formation and find differentials, etc. The game should be a genuine battle between patience and endeavour, where you can win FPL and mini-leagues equally by taking no hits or 20 hits. A 6-point additional transfer fee would just about players with my mind of strategy from the game.

Right now, it's easy to follow the pack with lots of trades and wild cards - that's the engine for copy cat teams

If you really wanted to prevent copy cat teams, then you need to also let Price rises not be halved by the league rules. This would let the fast players to change their treams for a gain and the copy cats are always buying their players at mean premiums

But surely you lose ground by following the pack on your argument.

I don’t agree with you but I do think it could add fun and an element of risk if less info was available on price changes and transfers.

I’m dabbling in Eliteserien this season. There it appears there isn’t the equivalent of FPL stats etc. I’m enjoying making transfers blindly - without being certain how they are going to affect team value.

That's what I think. In my view it would change the template in a different way, because it would make it more appealing to change your team more frequently, bring players in for short runs of good fixtures, take a hit to gamble on a new captain vs a weak opponent, and generally encourage action.

Don't like those ideas at all. FPL Towers have to make the game as interesting as possible to those who might lack staying power otherwise - and that's probably 5 million out of the 6. It would be a bit nerdy otherwise. It would all become a bit nerdy. As for hits - this game is supposed to be fun and people like taking risks with a few juicy hits.

Agreed. Hits definitely need to be a part of the game. It's not a competition to guess the best possible team in GW1. It's about analysing a lot of data, filtering out what you don't need, and making as many good decisions as possible.

Overpricing hits to the extent they become impossible to take would be like charging a 30% tax on making a raise in poker - aggressive players would no longer be a factor and everyone would play safe.

Gonna sound negative, but dont really see the point of all these changes.

1: It's still gonna hurt when your player gets subbed at 59. 2 points lost is still a loss. It's also gonna annoy you when others just scratch two points. And whats to be done with the mids then? 60=2 and 30=1?
Not buying this one. Just seems like more points for more points sake.

2: Also not a fan. Being on the wrong end of a captainselection is already damning enough as it is. A single wrong captaincy choice can already have a huge impact on your rank and season. This change would only further highlight this, and would also create a game where fear will dictate captaincy even more than it already does. Imagine being on the wrong end of Salah v Watford in 17/18. with the changes your suggesting, that would be a 2+1+3(+5+6+7+8)+3 performance. In other words 35 points, meaning your likely to loose 30-70pts on those that captain, depending on whether you own him or not. Yikes.

3: This is a good suggestion. Plain and simple. Really dislike how seemingly positive contributions can have negative impacts on players bps.

4: Disagree again. Chips just further the luck element of the game. Personally would like less chips, but know theyre here to stay. If they were to change things up, they should change it in a way that would make the distribution of chip usage more varied, and not just having tons of chips utilized in the last stage of the season.

Do away with price rises and drops. It’s a pain in the coccyx when casuals and millennials can’t wait till Saturday morning to do their transfers.

Besides, most of these price prediction sites seem to be guessing half the time and get it wrong.

It would also save that poor lad in India having to post the daily price changes. About time he got a good woman in his life.

I think splitting the midfielder category into two - offensive and defensive mids would be a great change.

Defensive mids could get an extra clean sheet point. At the moment a large number of defensive mids players in FPL are not selected.

Defensive midfielders (but not box-to-box midfielders) could be recategorised as defenders, and their prices adjusted to match those of defenders likely to score a similar number of points.

Many defensive midfielders have lowish prices and can be used as 5th midfielders or left on the bench.
Others get the occasional attacking return and are worth a little more.

But there will always be a number of mid-price players (and not just defensive midfielders) who are ignored because they don't score enough points to be the starting eleven but are too expensive to stay on the bench.

What are the pros and cons of actually removing the captaincy element?

That way the best 11 moves up rank irrespective of captaincy selection and rewards the best 11 every week. At times captaincy can totally disguise an awful XI.

Captains have always been part of the game, and it would be less fun without them.

Unlike the triple captain chip, it is a choice that has to be made every game-week, not just once a season, so getting it right regularly depends more on skill than on luck.

Why do you consider an eleven that contains good captaincy options to be more awful than one that contains no captaincy options? An awful eleven is one that has poor potential for getting good scores (including captaincy points) over a number of game-weeks.

With regards to an awful XI, I was angling more towards a captaincy option that pulls a good week out of the hat - in my view this often disguises bad selection throughout the rest of the team.

Theoretically a team that has 7/8 good picks could be outscored by a team with 2/3 good picks and one of those picks absolutely smashing it. So the skill involved there is in choosing the correct captain, not in choosing the overall 11.

I put FPL way ahead of games such as TFF and Sun but in those games no team can hide behind a captain haul - the team needs to be solid week in week out.

If they want to reduce the ownership of players / template, they could introduce a min spend on bench players so we have to say spend £25m on bench. Could also combine with 25% / 50% pts for bench players if they want!

Better to allow players to make their own decisions about whether to take the risk of having strong starting elevens and ultra-cheap (possibly even non-playing) benches, or to play safe with more expensive benches that can rotate with members of the starting eleven.

High ownership and template squads are not really such big problems as is often thought. Very few squads are completely identical, and they also change from week to week (apart from dead teams).

Always good to discuss how the game could be improved.

I’d like to see chips banned in double gameweeks to spice things up a bit.

Agree they should get rid of the -bps for shots off target, ridiculous rule

I think it was Andy (?) who suggested having a minimum cap on bps - any player who gets less than 20bps doesn’t get any, to avoid rewarding players who have been poor, but just slightly less poor than others... can see the logic here.

I think winning goal bps+ is fine, but could maybe be increased to +5 rather than +3.

And they really need to sort out the assist rule, use Opta ffs.

The minimum cap on bps is a good idea.
Though the situation is not as bad as a few years ago when a boring 0-0 draw would sometimes result in multiple players all getting maximum bonus points.

I'm quite happy for chips to continue to be used in double game-weeks though.
But it would be better if the TC and BB chips were ignored for H2H and Cup competitions (too difficult to ignore FH chips and wildcards for these).

The thing in this game that I find most gut wrenching of all is when your defenders concede a goal right at the end of the match losing the clean sheet points, even more annoying when it's a pointless consolation goal. I would like to see a rule being introduced whereby defenders get 2pts for conceding only 1 goal. At least then you still get some pts when the dreaded injury time goal goes in as described above.

Or add in a system to directly penalise the player responsible for the goal scored, an own goal, schoolgirl defending, an act of stupidity giving away a penalty which means all the teams defenders and keeper loses the clean sheet bonus. Cut the 6 points to 4 points but take 6 off the culprit!

This would be very difficult, as there's already a lot of controversy around assists given. Imagine how much trouble there will be when the game tries to interpret whose error results in a goal?

    1) Somehow make defensive mids an integral part of the game
    2) Alter the points structure on penalties that get saved but immediately scored off the deflection, particularly if scored by the penalty taker.

I would suggest to introduce more active approach to the bench usage. Would be good to have more impact to play the bench for example by substituting players between the days of one GW. This would expand the strategy possibilities by for example selecting players playing different days.

Makes it too much like Champions League game, too easy. The whole risk of picking your 11 is half the craic. Especially the will he/won't he return from injury this game dilemma. That player that you gamble on could start and score three or get 5 minutes of nothing and keep a 12 pointer on the bench.

That’s a fair point. And not worth so many for the bonus point calculation either.

      Disagree.
Scoring pen is not that easy imo.
      Look @ Siggy,Pogba missing 3 each i guess 😕

Points + bps should be same as openfield goal.

Agree to a certain extent, but don't think defenders should score more for a penalty than a forward.

Defenders are penalty takers because they're skilled at taking a penalty. So why should Baines get more points than Aguero for taking one?

Open play goals for defenders are different as it's more difficult for defenders to get in goalscoring positions.

After three seasons of FPL with two consecutive Top-10K finishes, the single most annoying thing in the game which I would do away with in a heartbeat, is minus points for an Own Goal. I'm fine with giving an assist in case of an Own Goal (to reward the attacking team / player). I'm fine with giving minus points in BPS for the "scoring player". But -2 points for an own goal? Almost the same as a red card (-3) and the same as a penalty miss (-2). A penalty miss is almost criminal - you and the goalie, no defence from 12 yards into an almost open net while doing something for which you are the "designated player". A red card is a serious foul. But an Own Goal? It's not like you run from the center circle and intentionally shoot into your own net from 12 yards ... You "score" an own goal always unintentionally and 99% of the time completely accidentally / through some weird sequence of random (clumsy) events while protecting your own net within the rules of the game (you don't get a yellow card or a fine for putting the ball into your own net, now do you?) and while the play is ongoing (unlike in a penalty situation) [Just look at the Smalling own goal vs Wolves while defending against Jimenez]. And the player gets a -2 on top of (potentially) losing clean sheet points. It makes no sense. Especially in light of the fact that a player gets no minus points (either straight up or in BPS) for conceding a penalty, e.g. through a handball (violation of the rules) or committing a foul in the box (violation of the rules).

Completely disagree, the own goal is the largest display of ineptitude possible in football, and should be punished accordingly. Yes sometime its unlucky, but just look at these hapless fools by way of example:

      And they're just recent examples!

Really interesting debates. I won't add to what appears to be a consensus on the 4 points (1 = possibly but prob no... 2 = no... 3 = yep... 4 = mixed feelings in quite a big way...)

I want to expand on the reason #4 is divided.

I would love some more smarts around the chips; that's where the next evolution of the game is without question (for me). There is a bit of a panic around the chips because they can make such a difference, that unfortunately teams end up being built purely to exploit the chips, and usually we end up with very similar teams and it comes down to luck. So, ironically, if you add more options, you remove the template, and in turn you reduce the role of luck. Some ideas I've heard or had:

1] I don't totally hate the TC, but it is a lottery, no doubt. I'd keep it. BUT... I'd add:

2] Double Captain - both C and VC score double. This would be by far a better chip than the TC, but I'd prefer keeping both.

3] Double DEF / MID / ATT - don't mind that idea at all. You get 3 chips, one for each area of the pitch (DEF inc GK). It doubles the score of that department. It's equal for everyone but you can be strategic about when that chip works for you.

4] Captain your top scorer - one week, you get a wildcard captain. Your highest scoring player gets their score doubled.

One other thing... transfer prices... I have a massive bee in my bonnet about this, so here goes...

They should change it to be more of a supply-and-demand system. At the moment, prices change because of TO vs TI... but this ignores the starting point. So, for example, if Wijnaldum is priced at 7m, and people think that's too expensive, then he basically never gets owned, and therefore never drops in price. He is basically out of the game for the entire season. Bonkers!! If a player falls below certain ownership thresholds and is not being Transferred In, he should continue to drop in price every week until such a time that his price-vs-value begins to attract investment, and voila; you have found the market rate for a dosage of Gini Wijnaldum, at which point his price stabilizes. This means that bargains emerge throughout the season instead of just in the first third of it, and the market activity shouldn't taper off like it does every year.

      2 & 4 are very good ideas.

There have been a few comments surrounding substituting players in during the gameweek, similar to the World Cup fantasy. I am not keen on this idea but had a chip idea that has a similar effect. I wouldn't advocate for this chip unless it was used in an armoury sort of way where there are a dozen chips to deploy.

    - A chip that automatically picks the 11 players that score the highest points in a valid formation for the week. This chip has to be played before the deadline & can only be played once.

The main benefit of this chip would be if you couldn't decide which players to play in a single week, and would be best deployed around the time a player bench boosts as well (as they should have 15 playing players).

    1. No. No need.
    2. No. Ditto.
    3. Yes. If you lose bonus for a missed shot you should certainly collect for a shot on target.
    4. No. We have enough chips.
