Pre-Season

2019/20 Pre-Season Page is now live on Scout website

The Pre-Season page is now live on Fantasy Football Scout.

This can be found by clicking on ‘Pre-Season’ in the top menu of the website.

From now until the start of 2019/20, you can head there for everything you need to know for the new FPL season.

What you will find right now is a list of pre-season fixtures for each top-flight team, editorial content written about them since the end of 2018/19, and the latest transfer news.

All of this is broken up into sections for each club, which also feature handy links through to their data profiles in the Members Area.

2019/20 Fixture Release Day took place on Thursday June 13 so the pre-season page already has our full analysis of the schedules.

This includes our initial reaction, an assessment of who has the best and worst fixtures in the early Gameweeks as well as a guide to FPL Fixture Rotation.

As the pre-season campaign winds on we will keep updating the page, making it an essential piece of regular reading as we edge closer to Gameweek 1.

The result of each friendly match, as well as competitive in the case of Liverpool, Manchester City and Wolves, will be added through the summer.

This update will include goal-scorers, assisters and links through to the Scout Notes articles written on the game – all collected in one place.

Any noteworthy developments in these matches, including positional deployments, injuries, potential out-of-position assets or ones that could provide exceptional value will also be gathered on the pre-season page.

This is one of the many reasons why it is so important to check in on this page regularly.

For example, within a few days of Crystal Palace’s pre-season campaign beginning last season, Fantasy Football Scout users were already aware of Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s potential as a viable £4.0m asset.

That was because we noticed how often he was starting their fixtures and informed our users on the pre-season page accordingly.

Furthermore, the form of Marko Arnautovic during West Ham’s 2018 pre-season programme, in which he registered five goals and one assist, was included on the page last year, leading to him providing great value in the early parts of 2018/19.

As the pre-season campaign continues to build up data, we will also be tracking pre-season minutes.

That means by the end of the summer schedule, Fantasy Football Scout users will have a complete list of how many minutes each FPL asset played during July and August.

This information will help inform our Gameweek 1 team selections and give us an idea of who the most nailed-on options are.

Each piece of additional content we produce in editorial will also be added to the pre-season page.

For example, we will have Members analysis on each of the 17 teams who retained their Premier League status in 2018/19, assessing where their best options could be in the upcoming campaign.

Also, once the FPL prices have been revealed we will begin analysing each position by cost bracket.

One of the most popular aspects of the summer months are transfers, and we have that angle covered too.

Each relevant purchase or sale made by Premier League clubs will be listed on the pre-season page and we will also cover the impact on FPL.

Every transfer that could affect the Fantasy landscape will warrant a Scout Report or Moving Target article and these will also be collected on the pre-season page.

All of this information should help best prepare to pick your final squad for the start of 2019/20 – so make sure you use it as much as possible.

Who'd want to go there with the transfer ban? Not Allegri, esp with their history with Italian managers. The gossip re Benitez is a joke - he surely hasn't forgotten. Hopefully, Wolves won't let their man go. Lampard along with Morris as ex-Chelsea Youth coach is probably the right team for the coming season. They won't win anything, and i wouldn't be looking at any Chelsea assets for my FPL team, mind.

I think Man Utd easily exceed them in the mis-management stakes over the last 5 years

Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea are all lucky they are as bad as they are - it gives them all a chance of fourth

It wouldn’t take a huge stretch of the imagination to see Leicester or Wolves pipping them all to fourth

I'm in my 50s. With my wife turning out to be a talented businesswoman, I don't need to work. I took early retirement last year but soon got bored. One more disastrous contract has convinced me to stay retired now. To fill my time, I'm writing a novel. no deadlines, no pressure, no prats to work with - I'm loving it!

Abraham did very well for us last season, let's hope Moraes can now step up. 22 years old, 17 goals last season, been described as strong, tall and promising.

A Club Brugge fan who watches him week in, week out put some notes up on Twitter last night...

      - Sometimes he’s a bit clunky.
      - His hold-up play is fantastic.
      - Amazing strength.
      - He’s really fast, despite being 6ft 3.
      - Still has a lot of potential.
      - Can lose his temper easily.

Also, I see Villa now continuing last seasons trend of lots of crosses into the box. Good news for those eyeing our full-backs, currently El Mohamady and Taylor, but that may well change between now and August.

That's about right. On speed: you can compare him with Lukaku. Not pacey in his first meters, but on deep balls where he really has to make a run, he's more than good enough.

The fella is huge. Emile Heskey size. He was very important for Bruges but lacks speed imo. Obviously the fysicality of the PL will suit him. Very good in hold up play and he also assists regularly. He took a few pens for Bruges as well which could make him really interesting. On the negative side, he has quite a temper which cost him 2 red cards in 3 seasons. If he'd be priced at 5.5, I'd be interested but I'm afraid it will be 6.0 because Bruges has put a heavy transfer fee on him.

How many first choice penalty takers do you reckon you will have in your starting 11 from GW 1 due to VAR being introduced? As I tend to wildcard after 4 gameweeks I might just plan on that basis to see what happens.

Not gonna pick a player based on whether they take penalties or not, don't think VAR will make much of a difference.

You seem to be in a minority here. I think there will be a material increase especially in the first few games until things settle down.

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 14 Years
          4 years, 9 months ago

No evidence to support a VAR-driven material increase in penalties - In the 1,140 games from Serie A, Bundesliga, and La Liga directly after implementing VAR there were 347 penalties... in the 1,140 games directly before VAR there were 348 penalties

          https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2019/05/25/var-impact-on-fpl-may-not-be-straight-forward/

That’s not to say there won’t be more penalties next year of course (there were 103 this season, the highest ever premier league count has been 106, twice, in 2009/10 and 2016/17 and lowest ever was 52 in 2001/02 so we can have wild swings in quantity of pens without VAR) but if there is an increase/decrease, it’s going to be difficult/impossible to attribute it to VAR

The timing aspect could muddy the waters, but there really doesn’t look to be a lot of objective support for penalty takers being any more or less valuable than they would have been without VAR

Note: The World Cup is absolute bollocks as a comparison - it has zero useful relevance for FPL, not only is it a tiny sample (~60 games - about a months worth of premier league fixtures) but the sample is contaminated by absolute dumpster fire teams such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Morrocco, Peru and others of that ilk

So I’m not queuing up to sign penalty takers any more (or any less) than I would have been without VAR

Not much (or any?) evidence to support the prediction that VAR will increase penalties awarded, its probably worth doing a bit of research to inform your decisions...

But as pointed out above, we could of course see an increase in penalties independent of VAR - and penalty takers have always been at a premium in FPL anyways

Yeh, I'd never been influenced by who's on pens in the past, but for the start of next season, there could be a rash of them. I'm onto Milivoivich for that reason alone, and it might tip Salah over Mane. Who else is a dead cert for pens? Who takes 'em for Everton?

It's not just VAR that will have an impact but the new handball rules as well - those two together will defo see a rise in penalties, at least initially, so i will be looking to have 5 or 6 penalty takers if possible with prices.

We've also seen a lot of goals and pens given then reversed due to VAR - i.e. we have to balance the extra number of penalties with the goals that won't be allowed. I think it will be a mess early doors and on balance, we'll see more penalties at first, so yes, penalty-takers will have value-added.

However, when I look more closely to see who I'll have in my squad because of penalties that I wouldn't have otherwise, I can't get beyond just Mili.

          • 6 Years

Basically much easier to give handball. The new rules in a nutshell:

It is an offence if a player touches the ball with their hand/arm when:

          - the hand/arm has made their body unnaturally bigger

          - the hand/arm is above/beyond their shoulder level (unless the player deliberately plays the ball which then touches their hand/arm)

          - the length of the hand for handball calls has been increased from the elbow to 2.35cm above the elbow line.

See Mane/Sissoko in champions league final or Dalot/Kimpembe in Man U vs PSG

The handball rule update is a good point. Presumably the data for the other leagues introducing VAR weren't with equivalent handball rules?

I would maybe expect a slight uptick in penalties, but not expecting a massive jump like with the World Cup

Norwich's early schedule is brutal. If they start off flying with those fixtures then they'll be dreaming about Europe!

Don't know much about Sheffield United but they could well be the whipping boys next season.

What do We think about Everton def? They finished really good defensivly but correct me of I wrong Zouma is on loan, If he is, it might change things?

He is/was. The other one to watch is whether they hold onto Gueye who was fairly influential.

I’m dubious about those defensive stats given how uneven they were over the two halves of the season. Until now Silva hasn’t really shone at organising a defence.

But I suppose you could argue that Silva imposed his shape on them and that’s a sign of how things will continue.

He can imposed his shape but without good defensive players it could be problem. Defenitly need to track on this. Agree about Gueye

Interesting contrast here for me with Palace. AWB does now appear likely to be sold for a fortune.

I’d be relatively confident though that the Palace defence will perform similarly even though his replacement won’t be in the same class. A Hodgson defence is always going to be pretty solid given reasonable personnel. I doubt Silva to do the same.

(The new Palace right back might be the one to be on in the 4.5 category)

Bloody AWB - had him from GW1 last season - he scored tons of points - perma-sat on my bench!
In truth, Palace didn't keep many clean sheets last time and I don't see them stronger this time out even if they do have a ton of cash to reinvest when AWB moves on up.

I agree with both of you. Hodgsons teams are always good defensivly but as Andy said AWB was really essential. Furthermore we need to see how Tompkins and Sakho gets back from their injuries.

Not that many (11/12 from memory) but they were just about best of the rest until the Everton run happened.

I can see double figures again and that will likely put them in the top half dozen or so. If there’s a nailed defensive option at or sub 5.0 then I’m looking.

That option could also be at left back as PvA could well be replaced - great going forward but a defensive liability

When assets are giving returns in less than 1 game in 3, I tend to go for the cheapest starters and bag the 2 points. I'm looking at TAA and Robbo as season-keepers, with Digne expected to compensate with assists. The 4th/5th defenders will be bargain-bucket 4.5s, transferred in and out according to fixtures.

Rotating keepers never works for me - the points scorer is always the one on the bench.
If I can't afford 3 outfield Citizens I'll get Ederson; otherwise, I don't see a stick-on keeper who's a better bet - not yet anyway. Could save more money and punt on Gunn if he's definitely the Soton starter.

If Salah and Mane miss the start of the season, I might be tempted with a Liverpool defensive triple up. Thankfully the charity shield will tell us. Firmino could miss the start due to Copa America as well so it could be a front 3 of Shaqiri Origi and Ox to start.

What will West Ham's team be? Something like the below? Arnautovic looks the weak link tbh given his fitness record. Could use a striker.

      Fabianski

      Yarmolenko Fornals Anderson
      Arnautovic

I might be interested if he's 9.0, then he's good competition for 8.5 Bernardo Silva

With maybe D.Silva getting less playing time, Mahrez might become an option as well (for the right price)

I'm hoping Foden takes Dilva's place, i.e. Foden plays most of the games and Dilva when he's rested. Foden could be a great price and differential (although a massive bandwagon would develop if Pep starts him).

Mahrez looked like he was up to speed at the end of the season. It would help his cause if Sane went to Bayern but I can't see it, in which case Mahrez still has Sterling, Sane and Bilva to compete with.

If he was 9.5 he’d be so tempting - but it may be better to use that low price as a safety net to observe him for a few games

Best case he’s fit and Pep still manages his minutes early doors to avoid a recurrence

Worst case he has developed a chronic and career limiting knee condition

Wolves, eh? I started with 3 of 'em last season - Doherty, Jota and Neves. They got off to a rubbish start though and as soon as I jettisoned them, they started firing.

This time I'm holding back. They'll be far more expensive this time, and with the Europa games they'll need to rotate; plus, we need to see if they do a Burnley. So I'm sitting back for a few weeks and bring Wolves in gradually.

They need to be careful, as Dyche was last year. Dyche pointed out that you can't buy players and promise them loads of first-team football, and then get knocked out of the Europa. I wonder if Wolves will bring in more Portuguese loanees.
