A Fantasy manager’s guide to expected goals (xG)

Fantasy managers who sign up as a Member to our website get access to a whole host of player and team information.

Among the underlying statistics on offer is expected goal (xG) data, which many will be familiar with already.

For the uninitiated, xG is the measure of a quality of a shot based on criteria such as proximity of goal and angle of attempt.

For example, a shot from inside the six-yard box will carry a higher xG than a speculative effort from 35 yards.

Along the same lines, expected assist (xA) data calculates the quality of chance being created.

Expected goal data doesn’t predict when goals will be scored, of course, and isn’t a crystal ball for the future – rather, it is a measure of chances created in the past.

Nevertheless, many find xG data useful.

Fantasy managers can use the information to see which players are consistently being presented with – or providing – high-quality opportunities, which in turn can be helpful when making future team selections.

Looking at the calibre of opportunity, rather than just an overall number of shots on goal or chances created, is often key.

‘Big chances’ – a situation where a player should reasonably be expected to score – are a decent barometer of this.

56.5% of the 1,072 goals scored in the Premier League last season were deemed big chances.

Of the 1,532 such gilt-edged opportunities created, 606 were scored – a conversion rate of 39.6%.

Site user Bowstring the Carp has produced an excellent, in-depth guide to xG in his recent Community article, which goes into the finer details.

He followed this piece up with a look at the pros and cons of xG, which is well worth a read to learn about its overall usefulness and limitations.

The rest of this article will be dedicated to looking at the xG data available in our Members’ Area, drawing attention to the players who had significant expected goal involvement in 2018/19 and those who were under/overachieving based on their actual output.

  1. Flexibility or Structure?

What do you think about flexblity? Should we build our teams with a certain structure?
For coming season I think defenders will be better values at the start such as digne, robbo, taa, laporte, ederson/pickford...
And there will be better options in midfielf than forward. Mane sterling salah kdb siggy...
I think so many will go cheap up front and even they may start with 2 forwards.
What if we start with a heavy defence (and possibly midfield) and then unknown forward options rise and show up? Should make at least 2-3 transfers to spread the budget to forward
Will it cost a WC/hits to rebuild team structure? Is it worth the risk starting with a heavy backline?

I think the general feel I get from last couple of seasons is exactly that, heavy defence and mid, cheap strikers, i'm, even considering 5-4-1 which I've never done before, will need to see the prices (and any positional changes for players, eg mane becomes a striker etc) - if there's cheap starting strikers I may consider them, but will likely go for a Wilson type player upfront, or a pukki type player, just can't see kane/auba etc worth it unless they have big price drops

Kun could be worth it but I'd rather have Sterling and won't be able to afford both

as for cost of transfers/flexibility, the same goes for any structure, eg you have kane and kun upfront, 1 gets injured, the other blanks 3 weeks in a row, whilst digne/laporte/taa all romp 30-40 points then you would be making changes the other way - I think the key is to set up with the players you think will do best (regardless of structure) and be prepared to adapt when there are obvious changes required

let's face it, if you are anything like me then early season transfers are fairly common anyway, so adjusting team structure within that scenario shouldn't be too much of a hardship

Thanks for detailed answer. Yeah I'm going to have a heave backline. But not 5 at the back and I suggest you not to do that. Great mid price midfielders and forwards appear and you can't get them easily.
I'm looking at deulofeu or jota up front. Or a possible new westham striker

The potential problem with any formation that has 1striker is that you need another playing striker on the bench to cover any time your main striker does not play. In the past it’s been hard to find a starting striker for under 5.5, so you would have to allocate that amount to your bench budget.

It’s seems better to go with a formation of 2 strikers. Then if one doesn’t play you can pull in a playing bench defender costing only 4.5.

I think there's already heavy defence in most of the teams, last year it was Robertson, Mendy, Alonso in the beginning, as cheap options don't match their points anymore. But talking about forwards it depends on your captain options. How many people captained Jimenez and how many Aguero? And again form will dictate the options:)

agree with that, get the best team you can get for the budget regardless of position, I think the inference is simply that to get that best team the budget 'may' be best loading mids/def rather than splurging 12.5 on a kane type player, hence leading to a 'heavier at the back formation'

Its a great question @Jacky Boy & one that often comes up approaching the new season

In 11 seasons I have ALWAYS been player orientated, starting with this player & that player that I definitely want & then filling in the blanks at the end. It has nearly always ended in tears in an early Wildcard after inevitably guessing a lot of the wrong players, or rather timing them wrong, having to transfer them out, then back in again weeks or months later when they inevitably did hit form.

Maybe a better approach is structure based where you define a value based structure & then shoehorn players into it, and if they don’t hit form, stick to the price range when selecting their replacement.

Its always a philosophical debate on whether that works at all, and you possibly need to leave at least 1.0-2.0 ITB in GW1 to really make it work properly/give a bit of flexibility on transfers

But say for outfield example below assuming a 9.0-10.0 spend on GK’s:

      Expensive-Midprice-Cheap-Cheap-Cheap (24.0)
      Expensive-Expensive-Midprice-Cheap-Cheap (40.0)
      Expensive-Expensive-Cheap (26.0)

Interestingly we had a similar discussion around about this time last year - worth a read - some predictions aged well, and some did not! 🙂

It's all about the players and their price, the structure is just a bi-product.

If there are kindly priced players who will likely vastly out-perform their price bracket, you'd amend your team to fit them in. Like a 9.5m Suarez/Tevez, or a 5.5m Mahrez. The players will always supersede any structural plans you have. This is why planning a strategy before seeing prices frustrates a lot of posters here.

The players available to a club dictates the system the manager will employ, just as the prices FPL release will dictate the shape of our teams.

Have to say I agree - ultimately I think the players dictate the structure for most (within reason)

Case in point - prices not withstanding - this year for many may potentially involve more back 4’s & back 5’s than has ever been seen in any previous FPL season

Largely because of the players - the abundance of viable defensive talent (again pre-prices at least) in comparison to any other season is unprecedented

Agreed. If there are an abundance of good value defenders, as we suspect, it may change our structure to accommodate more of these players. I'm expecting Robertson, TAA, and Digne to be good value if they're priced how I expect, but three pricey defenders will have repercussions elsewhere. It will depend on the midfield and forward prices, and whether owning these defenders will be such a hindrance elsewhere that it counters their good value.

              Quite

I’m also interested to know how many finished last season with 4 at the back.

Those premium defenders will in all probability have been much better value last season at their finishing prices than at their new prices for the season coming.

Could be wrong but I don’t remember a mass movement to 4 at the back in the second WC.

Hugely relevant point and something i’ve often thought myself

Its really starkly illustrated if you actually open up FPL , go the transfers screen, clear out your squad, and populate your defence with Ederson, Robbo, TAA, Digne, Laporte - and look how much free budget you will have spare.... yet I’m not sure there were masses of teams with this configuration

It’s partially due to cost of getting them in points (rather than pounds) for some - with hits being required to get them all, but it’s still a relevant point

The same will be true of Fraser, Wilson, Deulofeu, Siggy, Richarlison, Jota - none of them had huge ownerships at their grossly undercalled FPL prices (maybe not as much with Siggy - but I still think he’s getting a fair old whack onto his price tag) - yet all are likely to have huge ownerships in GW1, and so the circle will start again for next season as the cut-price bargains emerge once again

Main question is: do you care about using your wildcard early?

If not, then team structure doesn't matter at all: you're just optimising for the first 5-8 weeks until the international weeks. If you think hanging onto the WC really matters - then you're trying to future-proof your team structure

In my experience, it's hard to move expensive players around the team easily: a premium fwd & cheap mid swapping for a premium mid and cheap fwd. So you probably need at least 3 Def, 3 mid, 1 fwd in premium.

Beyond this core, your choices are:
Def: 2 premium (pick every week), 1 premium + 1 cheap or 2 rotators
      Striker: 2 cheap, 1 cheap + 1 premium

The rest on the mids. The rub is that for me it's the mids that determine which solutions I take elsewhere.

This season I will probably go 4-4-2 most weeks, but I hate 'cheap' fwds because none of them are. If you're never going to play a player, a 4.0 def is always going to be better than a 5M fwd for obvious reasons.

I think having one 4.5m forward that you won't play is a good option at the start, as it releases the most budget. You can always go to three playable strikers if needed when someone emerges. Other than that, let's just wait until launch as we are just speculating.

The time to go balls out is at the start of the season because usually most WC early anyway so if it doesn't work you are haven't screwed yourself too much.

This. And for several reasons, each of the last few seasons for the first 4/5 weeks it always seems the best team is 4 or 5 at the back - from our pre season perspective, that is the most reliable source of value, there is less variability imo. Who knows whether pukki, buendia, gross, rashford, bats, Deulofeu, h Barnes etc will be the stand out performer for 19/20? But one or more or someone else probably will, and score more points than Ritchie, laporte and digne. Will Liverpool keep more than 14 clean sheets and full backs get some assists? Almost certainly. Will they be the best Liverpool assets to own, who knows, but they are safe value bets from the outset. So I think safe bet premium defenders > early wildcard picking winners and more settled team structure (which could be 541 but I'd be surprised if only 1 good value fwd) once the dust settles is a fairly sensible tactic.

A word of warning though, it only takes 1 attacking return from first few games from a reasonable defensive side to make them look like a season keeper (see Alonso last year). I think that's another reason why big at the back looks appealing early doors.

I agree though, some very interesting defensive prospects this year, particularly the set piece takers.

I have a program whereby I load in the expected points for a price at a position. For example based on last year we could have 7m defenders getting 6 pts per game. I load in 5 tiers of prices per position and then run the program. It calculates 95 million combinations and spits out the optimal lineup structure for each formation. So then I just have to find the best players in each position that fall close to the price range.

Ultimately it points to where to best allocate your budget.

While value is important surely overall structure is more important in terms of getting max points and being able to reallocate funds easily. Defenders have always been better value but other positions have usually offered more points as the below demonstrates - Looking at last years finishing numbers:

Best Value side (points per million) in a valid formation at a max of 83m (allowing for 4 bench) was:
      Etheridge
      TAA - Robbo - VVD - Digne - Luiz
      Fraser - Milli - Redmond
      Jimi - Rondon
Costing £66.2m and producing 1899 points

Best side (total points) in a valid formation at a max of 83m (allowing for 4 bench) was:
      Ederson
      VVD - Robbo - Laporte
      Hazard - Mane - Fraser - Siggy
      Vardy - Jiminez - Wilson
Costing £83m and producing 2122 points

Sorting by value (ppm) of the top 30 results:
      GK - 10, DF - 14, MF - 4, FW - 2

Sorting by most points total of the top 30 results:
      GK - 3, DF - 8, MF - 11, FW - 8

A structure that allows you to have rotating big hitters would be interesting. Maybe focus on a 4-5-2 allowing you to play a multitude of formations:

      Set&Forget / 4
      7/7/x/x/4
      13/x/x/x/x
      13/x/4.5

I'm thinking fill the x's based on form / fixtures for longer holds and chase the points of the premiums by actively swapping them around - perhaps using captains poll as a guide - probably only need Salah and Aguero to cover most gameweeks as top pick and can use a FT to switch them in/out if someone else is in favour that week.

      1. Markus
        • 14 Years

This is a great post, thanks. It's for this reason that 3x premium defenders are my preference, because you're limited to having to play at least 3 but that is the area where there is most value generally so you want to maximise your returns. Beyond that, you're comparing max points so the 4th highest scoring viable defender must be better than the 8th best affordable/viable midfielder or striker which it rarely is, as above. Hence 343 or 352 most seasons winning out.

I'm not sure I agree having to have a premium forward, but 452 seems a good distribution with 2 no players at the start of the season

          • 6 Years

Yeah, the premium forward is the spot i'm most torn about too, certainly no 'value' in a premium forward but always nice to have the option of an Aguero/Kane/Auba as captain vs the whipping boys.

All strategies are valid and is ultimately whatever you think is best at that particular moment in time. Playing the game the way you want to is the way you will feel positive about the transfers you make week to week. Listen to information that is a plenty out there but make it your decision and stick with it. There is always good / value defenders out there every season. The key is to select the right ones which is always the lucky part of this game. Certainly in the first few game weeks.

Round 7 of Fantasy Cricket World Cup starts today. There are 5 fixtures in total and each team only has one fixture (no DGWs). In this Round you only get 5 free transfers with each additional transfer above this costing 10 points. The transfer deadline is 10.30 am UK time.

South Africa and Afghanistan can no longer qualify for the semi-finals. All other teams can still make it, but West Indies need to win all their remaining games and rely on other results going their way.

The one being played here is the official icc game. It’s all a bit cack imo - designed to attract casuals - it’s really all dependent on chips and picking fixtures and a team full of marquee players. Very little knowledge of the game is required

Don't agree with other games being better but to each their own

I've enjoyed the concept of predicting which games will be high scoring/one sided/ low scoring affairs rather than trying to go for individuals.

Obviously wouldn't work with do I but it's only a 1 month tournament which is what makes it enjoyable

As for casuals, that's just plain incorrect. Been following it on Twitter and the Ffs league and it's quite clear only

          Obviously wouldn't work with fpl*

Quite clear the causals are nowhere to be seen near the top

Wasn’t calling you a casual - just pointing out there’s little strategic thinking or knowledge of players beyond marquee names involved.

Disagree also. Marquee names involved are the obvious go too's but FPL is much the same. Plenty of scope for differentials in this game

Is it just me who prefers to have a set starting 11 and subs for if necessary rather than say have players who I will rotate such as 2 4.5 keepers or defenders that will rotate week in week out? I’ve tried the rotation and I always seem to get it wrong.

    1. Piggs Boson

With the amount of injuries and benchings that we have to deal with, rotations seem to fall apart quickly.

I'd rather focus on getting in players who'd I'd be content to keep long term. The strain on your FTs is eased, your team is more durable, and you are more likely to pick up price rises. In the past I've been stuck with a crappy 4.5m defender, who was the remnant of a long-gone rotation, and who's dropped in price several times. Your bench can look horrendous by October.

"With the amount of injuries and benchings that we have to deal with, rotations seem to fall apart quickly. "

Using that logic, I also avoid non-playing benchies (other than sub keeper). I'm not averse to 2x 4.5 rotating defenders so long as both will start. Right now a pair from Southampton and Bournemouth would not scare me. On the other hand, I won't consider defences that might be highly suspect no matter who they're paired with, so no Canary for me at this time.

I'm likely to go big at the back with 3 premium defenders and leave both cheap defender benched most weeks. I've decided the value is in defence and midfield. Up top I think I'd only consider Aguero in the top bracket, but if I put a cap at about 8m for a striker, I could maybe have Salah and Sterling along with 3 more viable midfielders.

Agreed I’m the same with the 2 4.5 defenders who play but just not start them and have them as back up incase someone doesn’t start, I’m constantly picking the wrong player when I was rotating keepers etc so think it may be time to give that a miss

Can’t see it happening but wouldn’t be surprised if he did earn that much. Although he can turn it on when he wants to there are so many other players I’d take over him first, more consistent players with better attitudes.
