Aguero proves worth to Argentina at Copa America

The weekend saw plenty of Fantasy Premier League assets continue their summer exploits on the international scene.

As the Copa America and Gold Cup close in on the end of the group stage, the opening round of matches got underway in the African Cup of Nations.

We’ve got all the latest news on who did and didn’t play as well as any injury updates.

Copa America

Ecuador 1-2 Chile

Alexis Sánchez has shown shades of his former self for Chile at the Copa America so far

Alexis Sánchez continues to hint at a return to form with another impressive game at Copa America.

After registering a goal and assist against Japan in the first round of matches, the Manchester United man found the net as Chile also beat Ecuador.

However, he will have to be careful for the remainder of the tournament in Brazil as he aggravated an ankle injury – although he still managed to play a full 90 minutes.

“I think I have a sprain, I hope it’s not too serious. At half-time they strapped it up, I played on with a bit of pain.” – Alexis Sánchez

Peru 0-5 Brazil

Roberto Firmino got his first goal of the tournament against Peru

Roberto Firmino finally delivered his first goal of Copa America 2019 as Brazil thrashed Peru 5-0.

After coming under criticism for their win over Bolivia and draw with Venezuela, the Selecao went up a gear for their final game of the group stage.

However, Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus, making his first start of the tournament, was denied a first-ever Copa America goal in stoppage time.

He saw his penalty saved by Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese.

After starting both of the first two matches, in which Brazil failed to get into their stride, Richarlison was dropped to the bench against Peru.

He was replaced in the starting line-up by Everton, who contributed a goal and an assist to proceedings.

Willian came on for the final 15 minutes and added the fifth goal – his first involvement at the Copa America.

Meanwhile, Ederson remained an unused substitute with Alisson keeping another clean sheet and Fernandinho missed out through injury – but has reportedly trained ahead of Thursday’s quarter-final.

Colombia 1-0 Paraguay

Having already secured the Group B top spot before this match, Colombia rotated for their 1-0 win over Paraguay.

That saw centre-backs Davinson Sánchez and Yerry Mina drop to the bench to be unused substitutes.

Coming in was Bournemouth’s Jefferson Lerma, who played 90 minutes in the central midfield trio of a 4-3-3 formation.

In action for Paraguay was Miguel Almirón in a number 10 role, while West Ham’s Fabian Balbuena was benched for the second match in a row after he was involved in the disappointing 2-2 draw with Qatar.

Qatar 0-2 Argentina

Aguero was benched for Argentina’s draw with Paraguay but came back for the win over Qatar

Sergio Aguero proved what a mistake it had been to bench him for the draw with Paraguay by scoring in Argentina’s 2-0 win over Qatar.

The much-needed result ensured his nation, who are yet to impress at the tournament, progressed to the quarter-finals.

He was deployed on the left side of a 4-3-3 formation, so not in his natural habitat, as Lautaro Martinez was deployed through the centre and Lionel Messi on the right.

Meanwhile, a first clean sheet of the competition came as Juan Foyth was handed his first start.

The Tottenham man was paired with Nicolas Otamendi at centre-back.

Roberto Pereyra was an unused substitute.

African Cup of Nations

Egypt 1-0 Zimbabwe

Salah and his Egypt colleagues tasted victory in their AFCON 2019 opener

Egypt may have won the opening game of the African Cup of Nations 2019 but it was hardly a classic.

Trézéguet scored the only goal of the game in the 41st minute but Mohamed Salah had plenty of chances to get on the score sheet.

The Liverpool man was deployed on the right side of attacking midfield in a 4-2-3-1, sharing a flank with Aston Villa’s Ahmed El Mohamady.

He forced Zimbabwe’s goalkeeper Edmore Sibanda into a decent save in the second half after putting several efforts wide in the first.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s Mohamed Elneny played the full 90 minutes in holding midfield.

DR Congo 0-2 Uganda

Arthur Masuaku and Yannick Bolasie were on the end of some criticism as DR Congo got off to a rotten start at AFCON 2019.

The Premier League pair manned the left flank in the defence and midfield respectively of a 4-1-4-1 formation.

However, they both played poorly as their nation suffered a surprise defeat at the hands of lowly Uganda.

It was the Cranes first AFCON win in 41 years.

Nigeria 1-0 Burundi

Alex Iwobi provided plenty of threat for Nigeria in their AFCON opener but the Super Eagles still made hard work of seeing off Burundi.

Captained by Saido Berahino, they are the lowest ranked side at the tournament but they held out until former Watford striker Odion Ighalo was introduced and scored in the 77th minute.

Wilfried Ndidi played the whole game in central midfield while Leon Balogun was an unused substitute.

Guinea 2-2 Madagascar

Naby Keita made his return from injury as Guinea were held by AFCON debutants Madagascar.

He sustained an adductor injury against Barcelona on May 1 and was initially ruled out for two months.

However, it would appear the central midfielder has come back ahead of schedule, as he featured as a 62nd-minute substitute.

There had initially been disagreement between Jurgen Klopp and the Guinea’s Football Federation president Antonio Souare over the extent of the injury.

If Keita’s comeback does cause further issues, there could be more said on the matter between the two men.

“The adductors [injury] is two to three weeks of unavailability. The Liverpool coach has to pull himself together, let the doctors do their job. Naby Keita belongs to a state before belonging to Liverpool. I remind the Liverpool coach a little bit of the rules if he does not know it. So it’s hasty and pretentious to make statements like this. What we do know is that Naby Keita will play at the African Cup of Nations 2019.” – Antonio Souare

Senegal 2-0 Tanzania

Idrissa Gueye was the only Premier League player to participate in Senegal’s 2-0 win over Tanzania.

Sadio Mané missed the encounter through suspension after picking up two yellow cards in his country’s qualifying campaign.

“[Mané’s] absence should not in any way bother us. Certainly, the presence of Sadio is beneficial but without him, we remain strong.” – Aliou Cisse, Senegal coach

Crystal Palace’s Cheikhou Kouyaté was an unused substitute.

Algeria 2-0 Kenya

Mahrez scored for Algeria very close to the time that colleague Aguero found the net for Argentina

There were just two Premier League representatives as Algeria saw off Kenya.

Manchester City midfielder Riyad Mahrez scored one of the goals for the Desert Eagles as they won 2-0.

On the wrong end of the result was Spurs midfielder Victor Wanyama.

Morocco 1-0 Namibia

Wolves’ Romain Saïss played in defence as Morocco beat Namibia 1-0 on Sunday.

CONCACAF Gold Cup

USA 6-0 Trinidad and Tobago

Christian Pulisic in action for the USA against Trinidad and Tobago

Christian Pulisic played an important role in the USA’s 6-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago.

Deployed in as a central midfielder in Gregg Berhalter’s 4-1-4-1 formation, he was involved in three of the goals.

The Chelsea man first assisted centre-back Aaron Long with a cross in the 41st minute.

In the second half, Pulisic set up centre-forward Gyasi Zardes for his second of the game, before finding the net himself in the 73rd minute.

Martinique 2-3 Mexico

Jiménez has been in excellent form for Mexico at the Gold Cup

Raúl Jiménez cannot help but continue his hot form at the Gold Cup.

After playing key roles in Mexico’s first two wins of the tournament, he did so again as Martinique were defeated 3-2.

The Wolves forward scored in the 60th minute before assisting Fernando Navarro in the 72nd.

Mexico are now the confirmed winners of Group A and will play in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

UEFA U21 Championships

England U21 2-4 Romania U21

England’s Under 21 side have already been knocked out of the European Championship after losing to Romania on Friday night.

There were goals from Fantasy assets Demarai Gray and Tammy Abraham but Aidy Boothroyd’s side continued to lack sufficient organisation at the back.

Having played poorly against France, much-hyped right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka was replaced by Jonjoe Kenny but the Everton man did not fare too much better.

However, the real surprise was Manchester City youngster Phil Foden, one of the better performers in the opening match, left on the bench – coming on only in the 57th minute.

Despite the onslaught, goalkeeper Dean Henderson still produced some impressive saves.

However, he was at fault for the crucial third Romanian goal, allowing Florinel Coman’s shot through his hands.

James Maddison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin were also among the FPL players who played the full 90 minutes, while Harvey Barnes was replaced by Ryan Sessegnon at half time.

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s Abraham featured only in the last 15 minutes, grabbing England’s second goal.

It seems that he is edging closer towards staying at Stamford Bridge this season and could prove a budget route into the Chelsea attack.

“I have been there, done that and now I have full confidence in my ability to score for Chelsea. I do feel ready. I really do. There is no better time for a young player to be at Chelsea. I am going to give it my all.” – Tammy Abraham

England U21 XI (4-3-3): Henderson; Dasilva (Abraham 76′), Clarke-Salter, Tomori, Kenny; Maddison, Dowell, Mount; H Barnes (R Sessegnon 45′ | Foden 57′), Calvert-Lewin, D Gray.

This is a great FPL blog by FPL Guidance: https://thesecondstriker.com/2019/06/24/player-analysis-virgil-van-dijk/

Highly recommend all the articles so far.

Much better than most of what FFS has put out so far in preseason, I'm afraid to say. I don't think what happens in Copa America 2 months before the game launches is of much value.

    Please raise your game FFS!

The xG article was excellent, but in the main the preseason articles have been below par. Hence the lack of activity and debate in the comments section.

I must have missed this one.
I see Ola Aina signed for Torino for 9m after spending a year on loan.
He was sounding like a really good prospect and seems strange considering Chelseas transfer ban.
Chelsea fans will have a better idea if that was sound business or not.

He had an 8.9m option to buy clause in that loan deal, so not much Chelsea could do - both Torino and Aina wanted the move so it went along pretty swiftly.

He had a very good last season, but this was after that option to buy clause was organised, so can't really blame Chelsea - he had struggled prior to it and Chelsea were keen to get some money for a player who was older than many of his competitors for the full back position, ie Reece James is 3 years his junior.

I started my 2019 off season analysis last week and taking last years points and likely prices I ran the numbers of came up with this as a possible starting team. Player, Expect Price, Expected PPM (PPM Last Year)

    Ederson, 6, 4.4 (4.4)

    Robertson, 7.5, 6 (5.9)
    TAA, 7, 6 (6.4)
    Laporte, 6.5, 5.1, (5.1)
    Alonso, 6.5, 5.1 (5.2)
Digne, 6, 5.1 (4.5) was averaging around 6ppm for the second half of the season.

    Salah, 13, 6.9 (6.8)
    Sigurdsson, 8.5, 5.1 (4.8)
    Midfielder TBC, 6, 4

    Wilson, 8.5, 5 (5.6)
    King, 6.5, 4 (4.0)

    Total Spend = 82m
    = 63.6 points per match

I dont remember, but either way a 6.5 striker returning 4ppm is decent value. King had the 13th highest ppm last year (for forwards). and they start the season against Sheffield and Villa.

well Salah could become Sterling but cant have both, not without sacrificing a lot of points from elsewhere.

The algorithm I used tries to determine the optimum way to spend the funds, then I try to add realistically priced players to those price points. Two Elite midfielders does not appear to yield the same points as what I have here

Its also worth noting that if you manage to average 63.6 ppm every week you would have finished inside the top 5000 this past year.

Obviously players wont play every game so you have to take that into consideration and also this does not take into account any chips and double game weeks nor transfers

Nice Firetog. I've done a similiar analysis. Please note that I am creating a perma-team and won't be making any transfers during the season. Only chips will be used. So I really need all my players to play as much as possible, which I have accounted for.

Very similar fund allocation, which is basically the objective of my analysis.
If you can’t change your players then the chips aren’t going to be much use. Can’t use WC or free hit, bench boost will boost your fodder. So only really TC is in play.

I seriously hope FPL do something about the scoring system to aid strikers. A 'fantasy football' game where 5-4-1 is genuinely a mainstream tactic should never happen.

The pricing for the toop defenders will more than likely dissuade this next season. I would be disappointed with FPL Towers if they didn't throw a few curveballs in there to inconvenience those who think they already have their squad structure sorted.

I’d like to see a point for an “assist to the assist”.

I also think that the BPS should be worth 0 if the action scores an actual point.

DMs will stay useless forever at this rate, probably for the best.

This is more for players like Salah, who are glorified forwards playing slightly wide so classed as in midfield. They're benefiting from a point per goal and clean sheet over proper 'forwards' which to be honest in the modern game makes zero sense.

The bps system should be altered to punish forwards less harshly when they miss chances so they can compete when their team gets a clean sheet.

I've lost count the amount of times a fwd is no where in the final bps when a defender gets a clean sheet and the striker scored but missed a bunch of chances.

Why not? Shows the game is evolving. For a few years the 'teams of the season' have been heavy on defenders. IE Conte's clean sheet run.

I'm not too bothered about 5-4-1 being a mainstream tactic, but it is a shame that premium forwards are pretty much no-gos at the moment.

The more players that are viable to more interesting the game.

Bringing DMs into the game would help with that too.

Does anyone think Lampard will be a success at Chelsea?

He might get a bit longer than other managers, but it's still one season or two as an absolute max if he pulls off a miracle. Then back to Derby?

Look at OGS for reference. Combined with no spending and Chelsea's P45 trigger finger, can't see why he'd want to go.

Stay at Derby for a year or two more, get them into the Prem or something. Plenty of time to go to Chelsea later and I think there will be better opportunities when they're in a better position (potentially with a new owner, no transfer ban etc)

'can't see why he'd want to go' - I've seen plenty of people saying this but I just can't understand it - almost Chelsea's entire defence and midfield would walk into Arsenal and United's teams and they have plenty of young talent coming through, they are on a par with Spurs imo. Top 4 and a cup is achievable for him, would that be deemed a success?

Given most people's lowered expectations it's probably the perfect time imo

Assuming he will be able to be manager of Chelsea whenever he wants, why would he take this opportunity when there will be better ones in the future? There's no rush, he'll get one or two seasons and then need a new job. Why take that so early on in his managerial career?

I can't see why he doesn't want more experience before he takes them over.

If he waits for a more opportune moment, he could maybe win the league and have a shot at the CL. We're talking about the next 15-20 years+.

With the transfer ban and loss of Hazard, he gets a free pass. If he nurtures some of the youth and Chelsea finish 10th, he'll keep his job. He'll get the time no other Chelsea manager gets. In the long run, with Lamps and Morris blooding decent kids and turning them into good footballers, it'll benefit the club and Lamps himself. Just don't look to Chelsea for FPL assets this season!

What price can we hope Tammy Abraham and Teemu Pukki start at?
Surely these two budget forwards will be high on peoples list coming into the season. Pukki put up 29 goals and 10 assists last season compared to Abrahams 25 goals (5 penalties) and 3 assists. Making both good options to begin with if you have a full structured team to bench them in their hard games at the start of the season.

I like Pukki, but he'll be too expensive for an untried punt and Norwich have awful opening fixtures, so I can afford to sit back and observe. Pukki 6.5, Abraham 6.0

Any Birmingham Fans here? Is Che Adams as good as he sounds? Your club's holding out for about 20m, is he really worth the money? Nothing against your club, but he IS a championship striker. 20m seems a tad excessive.

Thoughts on Willian? Didn't like him much last year but with Hazard now gone he'll be playing on his preferred left flank. Last year he scored 5 goals and got 10 assists in just 23 appearances on the left compared to a mere 3 assists from the right.

I think if he permanently slots himself into that position he will be a must have. Think he ranked 4th in creativity behind Hazard, Fraser and Maddison last season, and will most likely be on a lot of set pieces. Keep an eye on !!

If he's priced around 7m and starts on the left, he'll be hard to ignore, at least till Hudson-Odoi is back. He played the majority of the Europa League campaign on the left, and did really well. Think it was something like 3 goals and 7 assists in 10 games.

Would you be willing to captain a (liverpool) defender next season?

If premium defenders go up significantly in price it might be hard to fit in three or even two big hitters along with a few premium defenders and some midpriced midfielders. Also, TAA averaged over 8 points against the non top 6 in the second half of last season

    1. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years
      4 years, 9 months ago

No need. You don't generally captain 8m midfielders or strikers. Even with those 2 at the back, you'll still have one or two 10m+ premiums as captain material.

      1. Majestic Chanka
        • 7 Years

If the game made them £10m+ would that make it easier to captain?

Remember we still expect them to be excellent value even at £7.5/8m

Anyone who gets 200+pts a season has to be an option.

It wouldn't change the points they get, so it shouldn't make any difference. Going for reliable captains with a lower ceiling is an OK tactic.

Exactly but I wouldn’t say TAA is low ceiling, 9 double digit returns compared to Aguero’s 5. And it’s a fair comparison because they both missed a similar amount of the season!

18/25 of TAA/Robbo's assists came at home, most of them (especially TAA) against turd opposition - I don't know how well Salah scored in similar games but they seem decent options for the armband in those games

regarding finding lower priced assets, we still aren't even in pre-season so lots more information to become available I reckon.

      Sterling 11.5
      Mane 11

      Auba 11.5
      Vardy 9.5

TBH I think TAA and Robbo .5 cheaper or they will change the game and move the type of player to midfield.

I’m not ruling Chelsea out. Obvs a lot depends on ore season, manager and prices but both Luiz and Azpi are potentially interesting to me.

I’m a tad sceptical of Everton defence. My guess is that their record next season will pretty much match last seasons - but simply be less uneven. I still see Everton as being just about best of the rest - not in top 6 territory. If that’s the case there may not be anything much between Luiz and Digne say - just like last time.

I tend to agree. I think Everton will have tidied up their act this year. Cut off half of last year an they will be best of the rest. I am staying away from Wolves but will end up with a Bournemouth, Palace and maybe Soton.

After Robbo and TAA, my third premium defender will either be Digne or Zinchenko.
I'll be busting much of the budget of Liverpool and City, like everyone else, and I'm happy to forgo any Arsenal, Chelsea or United assets, but the problem is Spurs. They'll be sat in 3rd once the season settles and stay there, but I don't see any of their players being sufficiently good value.
You wouldn't spend more on a Spurs defender than on one from Everton or Wolves; you wouldn't spend more on a Spurs midfielder than on one from Leicester (unless they sell them) or Wolves, and Kane will be too expensive.

            I’m considering Lloris.

Spurs are capable of 16 plus cs under Poch and maybe the new home could become a fortress. I’d certainly play him ahead of Pickford if they come in at the same price.

Lloris over Pickford okay, but would you want to save 0.5m and forgo Alisson or Ederson who'd bag you far more points? I'm proceeding on the assumption Spurs don't get 16+ clean sheets - that seems excessive for all but the top 2. Only if I go for 6 outfield City/Pool assets would I turn to Lloris.

Quite similar to my draft, altho I'll have Ederson as my 3rd Citizen. I'm trying for Salah and higher-quality midfield, and keep my front line cheap with King as the most expensive one. Reckon I'm on 104-105m at the moment.

I think Ederson will be the best value City defender, but it's whether you want to spend £6m on a keeper.

If Heaton is £4.5m and nailed on he could be a great choice, especially a Burnley without Europa League games to worry about.

For prices, will you a player which is priced more than you think and 0.5/1 more than reasonable price?
I mean you wanted a player, but when prices are out you see he is overpriced
For example so many people want digne at 6.0
    Imagine he is 6.5
Does this 0.5 difference put you off?
Or sterling for example, I see people expecting a 12.0 price tag
Will you still buy him at 12.5 ? What if 13 considering city's fixtures ?
Last season sterling was considered over priced and few managers had gone for him from the start

If the Liverpool Defense comes in at 8m, I'll have to have a rethink.

I'm hoping Salah drops to 12.5 since his points last year were 85% of the previous season.
I can only justify one of Salah and Sterling so I'm leaning towards Salah until I see the prices.

        Think everyone is underestimating Chelsea.

There team is better than at least 14 others in the league,I’d argue better than Arsenal and United as well but the debate is there.

Gets a change to promote some young and promising players into the team until they are able to purchase players again.

We have seen guys like Dele Alli, Kane, Rashford make rapid improvement when given opportunity and change the makeup of their teams. Not saying Chelsea will necessarily have players get to this level this season but who knows.

But consider how experienced the managers are of clubs in the top half - managers of Leicester, West Ham, Wolves, for example. Solskjaer, after his initial burst, has come up short tactically, and I can see Lampard's lack of experience being taken advantage of by plenty of wilier managers.

If he can blood some of the youngsters whilst treading water this coming season, I think the club and fans will take a 10th place, trusting the club with him at the helm will push on in the 20/21 season.

Out of interest who are the 9 teams you see ahead of them.

I think something would have to go terribly wrong for them to finish 10th.

I think 4th to 9th will be incredibly competitive this season actually. My current prediction is this:

              1 Manchester City
              2 Liverpool
              3 Tottenham
              4 Arsenal
              5 Everton
              6 Leicester
              7 Chelsea
              8 Manchester United
              9 Wolves

(Wolves will probably finish higher - I'm just worried about the Europa effect)

Not unreasonable prediction and would make FPL quite interesting apart from the 3 Pool & 3 Citeh.

No chance! Will be the same top 6 as always. The gulf is too wide to bridge.
Think Wolves will be mid table, agree with Everton and Leics fighting for 7th & 8th.

          I’m not underestimating Chelsea, I’m doubting Lampard’s readiness .

It’s definitely a risk. I wonder what other managers they have wanting to take the job.

I honestly don’t know if there is many ‘high-quality ‘ managers putting their hat in the ring.

If Chelsea get this ban, they could have some quite cheap but decent players getting a run of games.

The alternatives aren't great though - just more of the same. Hire an experienced mercenary manager who brings temporary success, and slowly erodes the soul of the club. With Pep and Klopp raising the bar, I don't think that's enough anymore.

Appointing a legend will boost support and increase revenues - it will ignite passion in the fans. Lampard is an intelligent man with vast experience at the club, I think if he was given time he could build something. I like the appointment if it happens.

Do you think FPL will price some midfielders at 4.0 like they did with some youngsters added late last season?

Is the #19 for Brazil in the pictures for this article really called "Everton"?

Clearly a future Liverpool player 😆
