FPL reveal the first player prices of 2019/20

The first Fantasy Premier League player prices of the 2019/20 season have been revealed by the game’s official Twitter account.

Wednesday evening saw five players priced up, with four of them more expensive than they were at the start of 2018/19.

We also had the first positional reclassification of the season announced.

Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) – Goalkeeper

Having begun the last two seasons at £4.5m, Lukasz Fabianski has been handed a price rise to £5.0m for the start of the new campaign.

Fabianski was the sixth-highest-scoring FPL goalkeeper of 2018/19, having been the top Premier League shot-stopper for saves made (148).

The Polish goalkeeper has been in the top four for that statistic in each of the last five seasons.

The Hammers actually sit top of our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 2 to 12, once the opening weekend visit of Manchester City is out of the way.

It remains to be seen how FPL price up other goalkeepers in last year’s budget bracket but Fabianski’s price hike may be a blow to those who considered the Poland international a reliable, cut-price option who they could ‘set and forget’.

Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) – Defender

The top-scoring FPL defender of 2018/19 has, as expected, been handed a price rise ahead of next season.

Andrew Robertson was available for £6.0m 12 months ago but Fantasy managers looking to buy the Scotland international will now have to fork out £7.0m – just £0.1m more than his peak price in Gameweeks 30-32 in the season just gone.

Robertson registered 21 clean sheets, 12 assists and 29 bonus points last season.

It will be interesting to see what price Trent Alexander-Arnold is listed as by FPL, given that the Liverpool and England right-back outscored his teammate in terms of points per match (6.4 v 5.9) in 2018/19 and recorded twice as many assists (ten v five) in the final 11 Gameweeks of last season.

Matt Ritchie (£5.5m) – Defender

The first FPL positional change of 2019/20 has been announced.

Matt Ritchie, as we and many others anticipated, has been reclassified as a Fantasy defender, having been used almost exclusively as a left-back/wing-back from Gameweek 13 onwards.

Rafael Benitez switched to a 3-4-2-1/5-4-1 in November and effectively stuck with it for the remainder of the season.

The Spanish head coach will, of course, depart the north-east when his contract expires at the end of June.

Whoever takes up the managerial role at St James’ Park, then, may have different ideas about Newcastle’s formation and where Ritchie fits into that new system.

We could, therefore, have Ritchie as an “out of position” asset as soon as Gameweek 1.

The Magpies’ opening run of fixtures is one of the least appealing in the division, however, and there may be little interest in Newcastle assets straight away.

Whether the new head coach on Tyneside can match the 11 clean sheets that Newcastle kept in 2018/19 is another question, given how well Benitez organised the personnel at his disposal.

Ryan Fraser (£7.5m) – Midfielder

The best-value FPL midfielder of 2018/19 (based on points per million spent) has, unsurprisingly, been handed a steep price rise.

Fraser started last season as a budget £5.5m option but had risen to £6.4m by the season’s end, having finished as the sixth-highest-scoring FPL midfielder with 181 points.

A total of 21 attacking returns was more than he had managed in the previous two seasons combined, while only Eden Hazard and Raheem Sterling registered more assists than the Scotland international (14).

£7.5m was perhaps at the top-end of what we were expecting but no FPL asset came close to matching the 28 big chances that he created.

The Cherries face all three newly promoted teams in the first nine Gameweeks of 2019/20.

Ricardo Pereira (£6.0m) – Defender

Leicester City’s attack-minded right-back has been handed a price rise, which may be enough to deter many FPL managers.

Nevertheless, only Liverpool duo Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson registered more assists than Pereira (eight) among FPL defenders last season.

The Portugal international was the second-highest-scoring FPL defender who didn’t play for one of the ‘big six’ and outscored Matt Doherty by two points.

Pereira didn’t miss out on any of the ten clean sheets that the Foxes recorded, while he had the occasional “out of position” run-out on the wing – though was very much used as an orthodox right-back under new boss Brendan Rodgers.

It will be interesting to see what price Ben Chilwell is on the opposite flank, given that the England left-back registered half the number of attacking returns (no goals, five assists) in 2018/19.

The fact that Leicester sit bottom of our Season Ticker for Gameweeks 1 to 8 may delay any sort of investment in the Foxes’ backline, however.

I see Dalot has already liked a tweet pointing out his own good chance creation last season - bit of potential tension in the dressing room here already i’d Say - does it make sense to move Dalot on now, harsh to restrict him to a bit part role at that age if he wants to develop

              • 12 Years

He's only 20 years old, and hasn't been good enough defensively. Dalot will get games I'm sure, especially in the domestic cups. If he can't handle strong competition, he shouldn't be at a club like Manchester United. The competition for places at City is sickening, and you rarely hear complaints there.

I wonder at his age though would Dalot prefer to be playing 200 games in the next 4-5 years at a team (either in England or abroad) where he’s closer to nailed and get all that crucial playing experience

Versus playing maybe 15 games a year at Utd as backup to AWB - I think it’s something Solskjaer will need to take into consideration as I could emphathise with Dalot if he wants first team football - Sancho probably good similar example at city

I think 4.5m would be better for Elmo, and make him an option, but FPL usually price the more attacking option at 5.0m, so I'm doubtful.

Wouldn't be surprised if Salah was 13.0m.

Which players are most likely to get a positional change for the coming season?

I know that Zaha should be moved to midfield Zinchenko to defender and Salah to forward so who else should we expect to be reclassified?

Deulofeu & Jota will probably be forwards. Redmond maybe too.

I will be astonished if Salah is not reclassified.

Without looking at any stats of anything i reckon he is Liverpool's most advanced player and probably started more games up front than Firmino last season.

By my reckoning, Salah played 25 games on the right flank compared to 13 centrally. For consistency's sake I expect he'll remain a midfielder, even though he betters most FPL forwards in terms of underlying goal threat. Same goes for Sterling and anyone else playing in the wide roles of a 4-3-3 (no matter if they are orthodox wingers or not).

            • 7 Years

That makes sense to me. I think the term forward can be confusing. In a classic 4-3-3, there is 1 striker flanked by 2 wingers. I would consider wingers to be midfielders. Although I can see the other viewpoint too, that they are very advanced. I'd hate to see FPL end up like the FIFA fantasy game where there was an overload of forwards

        Salah’s heatmap is so advanced.

Jota as a forward? He was playing pretty high up the pitch every time Wolves went with him and Jimenez.

Deulofeu as a forward would make sense.

Rice to a midfielder (barely ever plays as a CB)

Yeah Rice should go into midfield for sure but those dudes in fpl towers have some strange reasoning at times.

I cant ever remember Zinchenko playing in midfield for City but never the less he was classed as a mid instead of a defender.

Firmino only changed from MF to striker last year, they won't contradict themselves.
I could rattle off 8 to 10 that should change from MF to striker.

I am of the school of thought that if a team plays a 4-3-3 formation that the 3 players that take up the forward positions should be classed as forwards so i have no problem with Firmino's classification not to mind the player that plays on average the most advanced in that system.

Why are people turning their noses up at a nailed defender who is

    1) Probably going to play OOP
    2) Priced less than he was last season
    3) Taking penalties in a season where we all think there will be more than normal amount of penalties?

And why is the consensus Liverpool will do as well as last season? £7m is a bargain if he hits 200 yes, but if he reverts to the mean he’ll drop over £1m by Christmas.

I think I'm damn close to having my 7 key players determined but now need to wait on pricing to choose others and confirm the 7 key players are feasible.

Have we had a Robertson vs last season's £7m midfielders post yet to show what good value he is? Was all the rage when Alonso was doing the business.

The Croatian spent last season on loan at Stamford Bridge, so he, like Gonzalo Higuaín, is eligible for a transfer despite their two-window ban.

"As a rule of thumb, players who feature as wingers in a front three tend to remain as FPL midfielders, while those who spearhead a three-man frontline, are paired in a strike duo or plough a lone furrow in attack are generally classified as Fantasy forwards."

Nicked this from a previous article we did. Rightly or wrongly, it seems to be the case in FPL at present.

Talk of a triple up for Liverpool in defence is embarrassing tbh. Christ, this time last year DDG was the best GK in the prem league.

2 at best, 1 probably more sensible with Laporte alongside

Are we to assume that the price reveals are one player per team?
If so, we should get 20 teams in the next 3 days, and after that, the launch?!

Sorry to throw a spanner in the everyone will start with robertson theory but he is injured and will miss pre season as a result.

I am expecting milner at lb gw 1. Huge liverpool fan btw.

Now some of you may be willing to put him on the bench for the first 2 gameweeks if it comes to that and thats fine but i am putting him in the same category as afcon participants. No salah mane or robertson gw 1 for me

That’s fair. I’ll be starting with him even if he’s out first 2 weeks, but no more than that. I avoided World Cup players last year (trip, haz, sterling) and they played earlier than expected and I had to waste transfers to bring them in , when I wanted to start season with them.

I tend to pick my gw1 team with players I want to own for entire season ( although that doesn’t get me off to fast starts). Interesting dilemma there

The Community Shield is 2 weeks after the AFCON Final, and 1 week before GW1. Hopefully we'll see some of these players get minutes then.

          Seems solid

But my real take away from that is the number of games he Mo and Mane played last season. I don’t see that as sustainable - especially with Afcon in the summer and the late CL finish to last season.

If you read the article he will miss almost the exact same amount as afcon players. Fit for first game and ready for first game are 2 different things. If he does not start community shield then its a no for me. Its more about time missed in pre season than seriousness of injury. Afcon players are not injured and may not play gw1. Same with robertson

I know it has been discussed million times, but TAA or VVD at same price?
Specially when gomez and matip are fully fit. They won't sit on bench for ever. If you lovren to them it will be 3 CBs for one spot. Surely gomez will start some as RB
I know TAA has best PPG but that works only if he starts most of games maybe 7 out of 8
If not he won't outscore VVD again.

I don’t think all 3 will be same price. I’m guessing 6.5 for both. I feel like FPL will make at least 1 of the 3 a different price just to make the season more interesting ( not that it wouldn’t also be justified imo)

I'm picking Ritchie and keeping for 38 weeks. Otherwise what's the use of 38 week defensive rotations?

....besides, people on here are picking Robertson at the start and benching if he is not fit for the start of the season. Makes perfect sense.
