Pre-Season

FPL reveal Salah’s price and position for 2019/20

Following Wednesday evening’s surprise announcements, Fantasy Premier League released five more player prices ahead of the game’s relaunch for 2019/20.

The big news saw Mohamed Salah drop in price and remain an FPL midfielder.

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) – Midfielder

Perhaps the headline price reveal of the day sees Mohamed Salah not only stave off a positional reclassification but also drop in price.

The Egyptian was £13.0m a year ago and got as high as £13.6m in Gameweeks 24-28 of the season just gone.

While he couldn’t match his record-breaking returns of 2017/18, Salah was still the highest-scoring FPL asset of last season.

Salah remaining as a Fantasy midfielder presumably means that there won’t be any seismic shift in terms of positional grouping (i.e. wingers in a front three won’t be reclassed as forwards) and that the likes of Sadio Mane and Raheem Sterling will remain as FPL midfielders.

All eyes will be on Mane’s price reveal, whenever that may come, to see how much the Senegalese winger has risen ahead of 2019/20 and how much cheaper he is than Salah this time around.

Jack Grealish (£6.0m) – Midfielder

The first Fantasy asset from the newly promoted clubs has been revealed.

Jack Grealish will cost FPL managers £6.0m next season, having registered six goals and seven assists in 34 Championship starts in 2018/19.

Grealish tends to play as one of the two more advanced central midfielders in a 4-1-4-1/4-3-3 though is given license to get forward from that position under attack-minded manager Dean Smith.

Grealish takes his fair share of corners for Villa and had a better rate of chances created than any of his teammates in the second tier.

It’ll be interesting to see what price Conor Hourihane, Villa’s other dead-ball expert, is listed as when the FPL game launches.

Callum Wilson (£8.0m) – Forward

Callum Wilson is the second Bournemouth asset priced up by FPL and, like Ryan Fraser, he has been handed a £2.0m rise from his starting price last season.

Wilson finished 2018/19 as the fifth-highest-scoring FPL forward despite missing eight of Bournemouth’s league matches.

Sergio Aguero and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were the only strikers to register more attacking returns than Wilson (26).

It’ll be interesting to see what price Joshua King and Raul Jimenez are as a result of this announcement: King as an alternative route into the Bournemouth attack and Jimenez as a rival in the upper mid-price/lower premium forward bracket.

King indeed outscored Wilson in the preceding three seasons, although there were mitigating circumstances (injuries being one) for that.

Teemu Pukki (£6.5m) – Forward

Norwich City’s main goal threat has been listed as a £6.5m forward, exactly what Aleksandar Mitrovic was at the start of 2018/19.

Teemu Pukki plundered 29 goals in the Championship last season, with not one coming from the penalty spot.

The Finland international was joint-top for shots in the English second tier in 2018/19 and first for efforts in the box.

Pukki also contributed nine assists to the Canaries’ promotion-winning campaign.

Norwich face Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City in the opening five Gameweeks and sit bottom of our Season Ticker as a result.

The picture looks rosier from Gameweek 6 onwards, so Pukki may enter the FPL radar from that point.

The Canaries have signed striker Josip Drmic in the past few days, however, which will add to Pukki’s competition up front.

READ MORE: Our Scout Report on Josip Drmic

Raul Jimenez (£7.5m) – Forward

Wolves striker Raul Jimenez has been handed an expected price hike after his much-heralded debut Premier League campaign but the rise isn’t perhaps as bad as feared.

Jimenez began 2018/19 as a budget £5.5m option but rose more than any other FPL asset over the season, briefly hitting the £7.0m mark.

The Mexico international, currently representing his country at the 2019 Gold Cup, hit 13 goals and registered ten assists in the season just gone.

As we discussed earlier, Callum Wilson is £0.5m more expensive than Jimenez but did register more attacking returns (26 v 23) and had a better points-per-match average than the Wolves forward (5.6 v 4.76).

The next thing we’ll be looking out for is Diogo Jota‘s price and position, with the Portuguese attacker anticipated to be reclassified as an FPL forward based on his run up front from Gameweek 15 onwards.

Pukki was never going to be in my starting squad, 6.5m makes that decision sooooo much easier.
Reckon he'll be up there as one of the worst pre-season hype bandwagons.

Quick point: FPL bargains come from oversights by the admins. Wan-B at 4.0 because they weren't expecting him to start (PVA was 5.5), Jimenez because he just came into the club via a loan (Jota was 6.5), etc. Any player they're ANNOUNCING definitely isn't an oversight, so don't expect great prices. We're more likely to see justified and overpriced announcements, then we hunt for their under-priced mistakes (bargains) when the game is launched and preseason gives us hints

Still is fun to talk about what's revealed, though 🙂

We were very lucky with Wan Bissaka..and Ryan Bennett also last year, in the 4.0m bracket.

I'm sure FPL would prefer to wait until they have some preseason form, and completed transfers before deciding prices, but I guess the powers that be want the game launched as soon as possible.

          Exactly.
But I'm sure whoever is in charge of doing player prices would prefer to wait until a week before the season starts to do it properly.

Zaha at Palace - £8m is fair
Zaha transferred to Arsenal/Spurs/City at £8m is a bargain - and should probably be closer to £10m....for example.

Think it has to be a factor with such a small squad. Fixtures aren't that kind either, but we've seen how that doesn't tend to impact Jimenez as much I suppose.

No the difficulties of the fixtures isn't a concern, it's just the volume of them, coupled with the travel to what will likely be far off lands.
It's proven problematic to teams in recent years, coupled with second season syndrome, makes me nervous of Wolves players.

FPL needs to be careful about the dynamics of their game.
If the cost of living steadily increases wherheas your income remains the same, then there's a risk excitement of playing will decrease.
You need to get a thrill out of the FPL management, not just looking at the game as a familly man budget manager.

Since the 100 Budget won't be modified, the dynamics has to be rebalanced by other means to enable managers to handle prices and prices rises (which will increasily be difficult to manage).

One possibility would be to grant 2 FT per GW (with a max of 3 FT for the next GW if you have not played your 2 FT) to enable players to easily jump onboard of bargains bandwagons

    1. Limited & Mediocre Mana…
      • 8 Years
      4 years, 9 months ago

With 2FT per week they'd need to chuck a 0.5-1.0 premium on every player. It'd be way too easy otherwise.

It's a fine balance between making the game too easy, and taking the fun away by taking away your chance of catching a ML rival after the first couple of weeks.

I think FPL have done it pretty well to be honest, and I think the had an extra 1m or so player last year than the year before that, so don't think the format will change...maybe a new chip, but that's it.

Does anyone else feel FPL are underpricing certain players on purpose? Salah and Jiménez for example, 2 FPL favourites from last season whose exploits are fresh in the memory are both slightly lower than they should realistically be, driving their initial ownership through the roof.

Maybe I'm a conspiracy theorist but I feel as though it's a ploy to increase long term engagement because, although nothing is certain in football, there's a very solid chance both of those players score well again next season. Players like those 2 are easy bait for FPL twitter to get RTs and likes further spreading the game.

Is Salah underpriced? Seems a fair price to me given his exploits last season. Of course, value is contextual. If Sterling and Mane come in at £11.0m each would you be picking Salah ahead of those two?

I think they could easily have retained last year's price of 13.0, considering he's still classified as a mid (another debate entirely) and benefits from Liverpool's very successful defense through CS points.

I'm not saying he's way under priced but just that little bit to entice people in

It feels as though it benefits the ghost teams to keep interest when they come back with a reasonable score.

I think FPL are doing a decent job regarding prices....and remember, it is a free game

I agree, in general they're bang on the money, but I just feel that certain players have popular interest/potential marketing value taken into account when deciding their price

Agree, Mo is a great price compared to say RVP, priced at 14m for less points.

That's a great example there, RvP back in the day had 2 unreal FPL seasons (11/12 and 12/13) and was somewhat justifiably given a very difficult to obtain price off the back of those performances.

This was before the days of FPL twitter kicking off and early price releases and all that jazz, I find it very hard to believe they'd do the same now

    No Chelsea players revealed yet.
How are people expecting them to line up next year, assuming the transfer ban stays in place, and assuming Lampard becomes manager.

I think we could see a more youthful looking team, Abrahams, Hudson-Odoi, Mount, Reece James...starting ahead of Giroud/William/Pedro etc.

Pricing for the young players at Chelsea could be important,
