Is it worth paying extra to have Digne over Coleman?

The release of Fantasy Premier League’s price list for 2019/20 could see Seamus Coleman (£5.5m) become the go-to Everton defender over the summer.

Lucas Digne (£6.0m) had originally been the target for the Toffees’ appealing early-season fixtures, but many were a little surprised that he received such a hefty price-tag.

In this latest Members article, we weigh up the two Everton full-backs against each other to see which can provide the best value from Gameweek 1 of the new campaign.

As this uses data from our Members area, you will have to sign up in order to view it.

What effect do the new prices have?

Round 8 of Fantasy Cricket World Cup starts today. There are 6 fixtures in total and India has a DGW. In this Round you only get 5 free transfers with each additional transfer above this costing 10 points. The transfer deadline is 10.30 am UK time.

South Africa, Afghanistan and West Indies can no longer qualify for the semi-finals. All other teams can still make it, but Sri Lanka need to win all their remaining games and rely on other results going their way.

7 indians 2 bang and 2 eng for me. Wasted the captain chip last dgw and going with that strategy again

Tournament reaching a thrilling climax though. At one point looked like we could have the final 2 GWs of dead rubbers. Huge games this weekend

Early days but sitting on this atm - what are people’s thoughts on Vardy? Was one of the first names in my team but a lot of people seem to be favouring sub 7.0m strikers

    Burnley Keeper 4.0
    Robertson TAA Laporte Coleman
    Salah KDB Siggy Zaha
    Vardy King
    Bench; Gibson Dendoncker Wickham

Yeah Vardy is someone I want. Wouldn’t worry about fixtures and under Brendan that Leicester team looked phenomenal. Just hard fitting him in with Salah + Sterling + premium defence.

Exactly, I was really impressed with Leicester and if Tiellemans returns I honestly think they could be top 6 contenders or will be 7th at the least - with Vardy being a focal point in this. You’re right though, feel you have to sacrifice one of Salah/Sterling to go for it though

If KDB starts the season how he ended it/particularly that FA cup final then, yes, I think for his price he will get enough output to be a better pick than Sterling, even if it’s not necessarily matching point for point

yeah...currently on Sterling, but the 2.5 difference could make some great upgrades elsewhere

I think it comes down to captaincy with Sterling, for example in my first draft I had Mane and Sterling as I would rotate captaincy. But when I opted for Salah I wouldn’t be against perma-captaining other than in some big games where I could take a punt on KDB/Vardy/Siggy. Just think that 2.5 allows for a lot more balance

Vardy was going to be straight in for me, but the value of the 7ish strikers coupled with the value in premium defenders means I don't think it's worth fitting him in.

Going by last season's points, Wilson only got a handful less than Vardy, whereas using that £1m to upgrade a 5m goalkeeper would have netted you 30 for example

      1. Athletic Nasherbo
        • 7 Years

Whilst there undoubtedly is value in price brackets below Vardy I wouldn’t look at his points too much from last year. Puel starved Vardy of everything! If Brendan was in charge from the get go Vardy’s points would be considerably more.

Was just about to reply along these lines but you’ve summed it up perfectly! Leicester a different animal under Rodgers, feel like if it was still Puel then i’d be straight in for Chilwell but under Rodgers I was straight in for Vardy and potentially even Maddison (though currently think Zaha trumps Maddison at 7)

          Have to say I agree

I think Vardy with a full season under Brodge will be extremely destructive - pretty sure i’m Willing to field a 6.0 attacker to accommodate him rather than split 15.0 between two attackers

Don’t get me wrong I think Wilson could do comparatively to Vardy were he to stay fit but I also think if you’re talking value then is King not worth the 1.5 less than Wilson? I personally think (were Vardy to get a full season) that he’ll be in the 170-210 range which for his price I still think is value - he just seems to be consistent rather than one of these players who bag you 2 points every week for 4 weeks then get 15 points in the 5th

I think the forwards pricing is very interesting this year. As you say, it's hard to work out the best value between King/Jota, Wilson/Jiminez, Vardy/(maybe Firmino) and which price point will work out best. Should make for a good variety in teams

I like the Vardy pick. I think this year strikers could make a comeback. Lots of options and at good prices. I’m currently sitting on Vardy, Arnie and King.

Cheers - I think I’m with you on this, Kane for example could be great value at that price plus whoever Chelsea’s first choice striker is could offer value. Think the issue is despite a resurgence of strikers I also can’t really see much decline in midfield with the likes of Salah/Sterling/Mane/KDB etc

On this currently- Zaha could be anyone from Willian to Maddison to Mili to Gross.

Nice, I’m a fan of that other than Mendy - I think of you know after the CS he’s first choice then great, but with Zinchenko new contract I just can’t look past Ederson or Laporte as city option unless Maguire signs

6.0 is a nasty bracket for mids/fwds - but who is your pick at that bracket?

JWP, Ings, Pereyra, Almiron, Townsend, Gudmundsson, CHO, Glenner, DCL?

Wish I could pick a 6th defender to be honest but really like Vardy, King, Sterling, Salah +6.0 in front of a big beautiful back 5 so a compromise must be made

He's competing with Willian on the left, Pedro & Pulisic will compete on the right. CHO apparently posted on Instagram hoping to be fit in September. Doubt very much that's match fit ready to play 90mins every week, ahead of Willian. If Lamps comes in he has to manage the egos & the upcoming youth. Tricky balance, I expect him to manage his minutes coming back from serious injury. 1 point cameos to start with, with CL games assuming Willian deemed first choice, CHO might get PL starts, but one to watch, high risk to select earlier.

Cheers - I look at JWP’s 94 points in sub-2000 minutes & am fairly interested now that he’s Ralphie main main in the midfield with a good wallop of set pieces and THAT long range shooting ability

Similarly Ings plays like an 8.0 when fit, he’s just rarely fit lol

        CHO is intruiging

I think it’s feom those 3 as Everton will almost certainly sign a striker to relegate DCL to the bench imo

Stuart Armstrong is another interesting one (5.5) if he could win his pace, his points per 90 was very impressive last season & looks to have a lot of potential

Looks like we are going for the same structure. Tbh I downgraded defence by .5 to get a 6.5 forward. Much better options there tbh. King and deulo I can see outscoring the 6.0 by quite a margin. If you had to pick them DCL

Totally agree - the difference that 0.5 makes is huge

Have to hope a first choice LB at city emerges in pre season - that solves the problem beautifully & allows a Deulofeu or a Jota instead of a JWP or an Ings - massive difference

That's why I've gone three at the back already, enables 2 x 4.0 on the bench, meaning I can up my midfield value to 6.5.

I’m delighted with my other 10 players tbh, didn’t even think they’d be affordable, so it’s not a terrible compromise overalll....

Plus I know there’s definitely one or two bargains (a la Fraser/Jimmy last season) out there in 6.0-&-below-land, there always is...

We just don’t know how they are yet 🙂

I've decided I want Kane for his three home fixtures. So I've had to make sacrifices in defence:

          Ederson
          Robbo Digne VVD
          Sterling Redmond Siggy Maddison
          Kane Deeney King

          lol, Jorginho, lol, lol

I can move Jorginho (idea is to use for Chelsea pens at cut price) to Dedoncker, upgrade Sterling to Salah (if fit from AFCON) then price points makes Kane to Aguero doable if need be. I have a feeling Salah & Mane will start the season jaded at best, or rested at worst so starting without them in my drafts. Early WC can fix any disasters.

If I keep Sterling, I can upgrade VVD to TAA, or use Digne to Coleman to bring that extra 0.5.

Also if Zaha moves to Arsenal, Maddison to Zaha is nailed on.

I've got some 6.5s, at 6.0 I'm on DCL although open to persuasion.
With CHO you wouldn't have him in your GW1 squad, then you'd want to see him play himself into a couple of games before transferring him in.

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 14 Years

CHO actually could turn out to be at a very silly price the more you look at it, he’d surely be good for 7-10 G & 7-10 A if he gets a nailed place after injury... seems a very good player ready to step up & should have the hunger factor to be a bit selfish which is great for FPL

    6. Big4FPL
      • 9 Years

I couldn’t pick anyone I liked and decided I had to compromise 0.5 from the defence - whether it be Coleman>Digne, VVD>TAA/Robbo or Ederson>Laporte I think there’s so many more options at 6.5/7.0 than 6.0. Probably not the answer you want but otherwise JWP/Ings/DCL could work out!

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 14 Years

Yeah Laporte > either Mendy or Zinch is something I’m monitoring carefully

I’d be fine with that if either emerge as first choice LB, or if Mendy gets perma crocked again - problem solved 🙂

        1. Big4FPL
          • 9 Years

Yeah if Zinchenko was nailed after another Mendy injury I think he’d be in every team - that 1.0m it would free up from Laporte would be brilliant!

Keep the fingers crossed that either Mendy gets fit & flying in which case he’ll likely win the spot... or that he gets injured in which case we have a serious bargain on our hands with Zinchenko

The saving from Laporte>Zinch/Mendy then enables that 6.0 attacker to become a 6.5 or even 7.0 attacker & everything’s rosy in the garden 🙂

If I've learnt anything from slow starts in previous seasons it's avoiding unknown quantities and having too many mid priced midfielders. Dont want to waste transfers on defenders early on so have gone big and backed it up with cheaper players who have a long run of good fixtures. Thoughts?

    TAA - Robbo - Coleman - Ake - Dunk
    Salah - KdB - Richarlison

Here is a basic spreadsheet of Value, using 2019/20 Prices and 2018/19 Points Per Game (PPG).

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1WFQJy7Lv_0OJIqiKLuwuXtt9uNOUf4qiA4D3zau9cxE/edit?usp=sharing)

It suffers from the usual limitations of PPG, that players with lots of sub appearances perform poorly. Of course, the promoted players are not included, and you also have to consider how performances will significantly differ this season.

What it does seem to demonstrate, though, is that Goalkeepers and Defenders are more kindly priced than Midfielders and Forwards in comparison with their returns.

Liverpool Defenders appear to be very strong prospects, although as ever, you have to balance that against budget Defenders providing stronger Value than budget Midfielders or Forwards.

We also need to consider the Captaincy, and that having the 15 best Value players is unlikely to score you the most Points if you leave 20m in the bank.

My approach is to start with the best value team and then slowly upgrade each position to the next best value option until the budget runs out. In theory that gets you the best value team while spending the whole budget

Interesting that Wilson is the highest non-defender there...

From everyone's initial reaction it seemed like he was overpriced but this definitely suggests otherwise.

Massive thanks for the spreadsheet btw!

Thanks, great contribution. The interesting thing then becomes value per additional £m above the best value ix. I'm waiting for rmt projections for my own analysis but this is really helpful, thanks so much

It feels so good setting up a starting team that will be wildcarded after GW4. If by some miracle my team does great, then maybe I don’t have to pull the trigger, but being able to pick a team that I only need to consider the first four fixtures and not look at ‘the bigger picture’ is really relaxing.

      I see you can put
      "
      No
      room
      for
      racism
      "
on your shirts instead of EA Sports etc. Wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment (and my team strip now adorns this), but the design is sadly lacking. It's far more cramped that as shown above, and it could do with being centralised on the shirt ~ and perhaps without a white background. Great idea, but more effort please.

What are your views on having three £6.5's up top? It allows a lovely defence and midfield. The only concern I have is if an Aguero or a Kane start firing them in, you've got to move heaven and earth to make up the funds. Surely flexibility is key?

Exactly. I'm almost certain I'll start with Kane or Aguero. I can't see me fitting Sterling in, which could be a bummer but I want Salah, Kane, Robbo and TAA.

My early cheap forward shout will be Andone.

Murray almost turning to dust at his age, a more attacking manager, had reasonable periods and at 5 million could actually be a starter for a team that has reasonable fixtures.

Obviously pre season will play a part but now that he’s had a first season bedding in, could be a bit more involved.

Looked at his record when playing in top leagues to date.

Spain: 24 goals in 91 games
PL: 5 goals in 27 games

        He is a 1 in 4 / 1 in 5 player at best. So if he manages 35 games you can expect between 7 and 9 goals. Using 35 appearances and 8 goals and max bonus every time he scores you can expect: (35 x 2) + (8 x 4) + (8 x 3) = 126 pts.

That’s fine, for 5m. A chance that some of those returns could occur early on.
