Can a price drop boost Harry Kane’s FPL appeal?

Harry Kane (£11.0m) has been handed an eye-catching starting price by the Fantasy Premier League decision-makers.

The Tottenham Hotspur striker is available for £11.0m going into Gameweek 1, the cheapest he has started a season since 2016/17.

Kane’s 2018/19 ended in frustrating fashion for the England centre-forward, with two separate ankle ligament injuries forcing him to miss ten of Spurs’ final 16 Premier League fixtures.

A total of 160 points represented his lowest FPL score in five seasons as a first-team regular in north London, although 23 attacking returns was more than any of his teammates managed and his points-per-match average of 5.71 was the second-best among FPL forwards in 2018/19.

With Kane’s starting price dropping by £1.5m on what it was 12 months ago, does he again become one of the more attractive premium options in the game?

The Members’ article below delves into the data to analyse Kane’s season and ponder his worth.

Tough one her boys, gimme a quick A or B:

A: Ryan, VVD, Vardy (will play 433)
    or
B: Ederson, Robertson, Madison (will play 442)

Rest of the team looks like this:

    (*Ederson/Ryan*)
    TAA // (*VVD/Robertson*) // Digne // Mendy
    Salah // Sterling // Zaha // (*Madison*)
    (Vardy*) // DCL // King

Currently on B as I beileve its still balanced while still offering good Leicester coverage with Madison will being superior in the GK/Def department.

Personally, I have no Leicester - fixtures. But I think Vardy is more likely to be reliable. Less subject to fixtures, too.

    Your opinion on this?

    Pickford
    TAA Boly Robertson
    Mane B.Silva Fraser Zaha
    Kane Jimenez Sharp

Bench: 4.0m GK, 4.0m DEF, Diop, Dendocker

P.S.1: I cannot see more reliable defenders than this great Liv pair
P.S.2: Sharp is so influential for his team he is their captain and can really provide some great help at the start
P.S.3: Pickford is the only 5.5m GK

Morning. Pope? How are you going to feel at the end of every 'Pool match? The only 4.0 defender, so far, is Kelly. So you can pencil him in.

I am really not a fan of KDB, even in his good Seasons. Never done it for me.

My keeper situation remains unsolved, i can move to Ryan for the first few weeks if there is uncertainty.

KDB has scored 200 points two years in a row. Looked v good for a few games end of last season too.

Hes not a captaincy option, but at 9.5 hes gonna tick points over like an Eriksen on steroids

KDB is interesting. As long as hes not injured he offers pretty good value for money. Assuming he gets 200 points (thats around what he got the two seasons prior to last one) there are only a few who offer better value and they are all much cheaper.

Amazed at the amount of teams which are featuring salah, sterling & Kane!

Granted it means the rest of your team is weaker, however is there not a case to be said that it gives you greater flexibility going forward? You have 3 big hitters which allows you to:
    a) not have to make a series of transfers to get them if they all catch fire straight away
    b) if they don't, its an easier transfer to downgrade to cheaper players who are in form and spread the cash then it is to try and upgrade to get them in.

Seems to me that more likely to avoid an early wildcard by having them in straight away rather then suddenly needing them and having to press the wildcard button.

    thoughts?

Yeah i feel like they are set in mine aswell. Leaves me with something like the below:

        Ryan
        TAA / Robbo / Mendy / Digne
        Salah / Sterling / Jorginho
        Kane / King / Andone

        Button / Kelly / Dendoncker / Choudhury

0.5 itb so jorginho could become mcginn, or possibly zinchencko in for mendy and then have 1.0m to play with

          • 7 Years

Decent and yes if Zinchenko nails the spot down that could open up lots of avenues.
I'd prefer Long to Andone and you could always save 0.5 with Coleman for Digne though I can see why people think he is worth 0.5 more.

Here is where I am (if Zinchenko is preferred):

          Ryan
          Robbo | VVD | Zinchenko | Coleman
          Salah | Sterling | Zaha | Noble
          Kane | King

          Button | Kelly | Dendoncker | 4.5 striker

Noble can become Jorginho if he is now on pens.

Looks good. 3rd midfield slot for you is considerably better then mine, guess it just depends on if the slight savings on VVD / Coleman are worth it - every chance they could be.

Hopefully over the next few weeks there are a couple of good enablers that emerge too.

Meh.. Im of the firm belief that several big hitters is a waste of money. For instance Kane + Townsend (best 6.0) is a lot less value than Jimenez + KDB. Same thing happens if you look at Sterling + forward options.. compared to value alternatives.

Looking at opening fixtures I would cap Salah all the time, reducing the appeal of another big hitter or two.

How would playing two of three of Jorginho and a pair of rotating 4.5 defenders look in this:

    Ederson
    Robbo VVD Digne 4.5

    Kane King

Of course not but Jorginho might well step up next season if Kante moves back to his move natural role. Jorginho could well be on penalties and was very unlucky not to get a handful of assists last year. The 4.5 def rotation will need some work but I'm sure there could be a combination with the potential for an occasional clean sheet.

Jorginho was bought purely to lead 'Sarriball'. Not sure he can play any other way, and not sure how or even if Lampard will use him. Need to monitor that in pre-season.

Willian seems to be doing well at Copa America atm, however I've burnt myself with that guy too many times at fpl. Looks good with the ball but end product is always disappointing.

Currently, I'd only consider Kante or Jorginho, and purely for bench duty. Could change once we see how the new manager sets up and players respond in pre-season.

    Which one would you prefer:

    A) Sterling and 6.5 fwd (Jota/Deulofeu)
    B) KdB and Vardy

B seems better if KdB is back but it leaves me with only Salah as a 10m+ player. Would I be comfortable captaining KdB or Vardy when Pool have bad fixtures? not so sure.

    Thanks!

Some weeks disastrous, but when you look at just how many clean sheets those 2 bagged last season compared to everyone else, I think it's a risk worth taking. Guarantee you won't see any other squads like that though!

Hmm, that's all pool and city slots used for defence and 1 unlucky goal conceded cripples your team. I'm afraid you'll miss out most of the juicy attack returns these two teams will definitely be collecting.

Yes, I'm aware of that. But in the cold light of day only the biggest hitters (Salah, Mane, Sterling, Aguero) got more points per match, and no one was better value last season. They'll all play every match whereas the mids/forwards will be rotated and subbed. It also leaves me with a healthy kitty for those positions - Auba, Vardy, Maddy, Siggy.

I know they are great value (I have 4 of those 6), but I hated watching my fantasy defender's matches and hoping for clean sheets...instead of cheering for goals

I'd like to think there are a good few assists embedded in that lot. I foresee opponents of Liverpool and City universally defending deep and thus both sides are going to use their flanks heavily. By the way, Walker is a placement-holder for Mendy/Zinchenko.

    Ryan /Button
    Robertson TAA Mendy Digne Trippier
    Salah KDB Siggy /McGinn Dendoncker
    Vardy King / Wickham

** I think Trippier is being ignored a lot. With setpieces in his locker and very tasty homes,I think he is as good an option as the other defenders.
** Villa have nice fixtures from GW 2,hence McGinn. He also covers difficult games for Trippier and King.So there is rotation between the 3.
** Only one premium in Salah.I think he is the best choice for captaincy till GW 6.Think De Bruyne will cover Sterling's points if not match him.
** Distributing the funds at the start of the season gives you more chance to attain a high TV and we know the cheaper options tend to rise in price very easily.

    Thoughts?

I'd keep an eye on Mendy at pre-season. Easy swap to Zinchenco though. Otherwise solid, though I'd prefer Sterling over KdB but can't have them all.

Have 5.5m for a last defender slot. Not convinced by Coleman, Trips or spurs defs, Zinchenko for the first 5-6 gameweeks.

    Matt Richie or Ake?

    1. Andy_Social

Ritchie is an interesting punt - prolly no clean sheets, but if he plays as an attacking winger on pens, he could be gold.
Ake is nailed but after the first 2 games he wouldn't get you much as BOU don't keep clean sheets.

Any informed opinions out there about just how much value a good 4.5 GK will likely offer over Ederson?

I’m currently on 4.5 GK - 6.0 attacker for example (Ings, JWP, CHO etc look to have potential for that slot, but we know someone will emerge in the first few gameweeks around 5.0-6.0 as a mega bargain attacker, they always do)

Whereas I could go Ederson-4.5 attacker (which will basically be a 2point merchant if lucky, Dendoncker, Stephens etc) or Lloris-5.0 etc

Intuitively it “feels”like 4.5GK + 6.0 Attacker should win comfortably on points... particularly if/when the attacking bargains emerge and/or the Sheffield Utd GK situation gets resolved with a 4.5 option...

Solid thinking? Or a bit of a blind spot?

    1. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years
      4 years, 9 months ago

The only information available to make an opinion is last seasons points haul. Anything else is a hunch.

      Ederson - 169 points
      Highest-scoring (current) 4.5m Ryan - 104 points.

The new Sheff United keeper could save tons of pens and do a Cardiff goalie, if you're feeling lucky!

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 14 Years

Yeah my main concern with using that version of last year’s data is it excludes the three relegated keepers, Ryan’s score takes an unfair haircut because of his departure around Christmas for the internationals, and it also assumes there’s no nailed Burnley keeper which we may have this year... so I’d just be a bit hesitant in terms of its usefulness

I actually think Ederson’s score last year might have a bit of improvement in itthis year though - he’s normally good at saving pens and didn’t save any last year, could easily save two or three (or none lol) this year

        1. Andy_Social
          • 11 Years
          4 years, 9 months ago

Don't think the relegated keepers alter the picture unless you're deliberately going for one you think will go down!
But the key point you touch on is Burnley. Heaton and then Pope were fantastic value 2 seasons ago - I got Pope in at 4.0 and loved it. Last season they were screwed by Europa and Hart. The question is, will the Burnley defence be back to 2 years ago with Heaton or Pope between the sticks, or has that magic gone?
If Burnley look like they're going to repeat their magic of 2017, I can easily lose Ederson and invest 1.5m elsewhere, but for security, I'm on Ederson at this point.

          1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
            • 14 Years
            4 years, 9 months ago

The relegated keepers can actually be surprisingly effective FPL assets, for most of them you have to time then right which can be tricky, but also even from a fire & forget perspective - See young master etheridge!

I reckon it's either a nailed Burnley keeper or hopefully Sheffield united who will be the top 4.5's this year - and intuitively it feels like a good 4.5 + 6.0 attacker should fair better on points than Ederson + a 4.5 mid/Fwd... But as things stand at the minute there aren't really any good 4.5's so Ederson could yet get the nod 🙂

My drafts seem to come down to Vardy & Sterling or KDB & Kane.
Sterling & Kane would be ideally but with Salah it's simply too expensive.
I just like the idea of having a premium slot at front so finding it hard to get away from Kane.

Here is a rough draft with the three, fixtures checked:

      GW1:

      Ryan
      van Dyke, Coleman, Cathcart
      Sterling, Salah, Sigurdsson, Noble
      Kane, Wilson, Origi

      Button; Stephens, O’Connell, Kelly … 19/20, 0.0 ITB, TV: 100.0

I had Kane in until I read this morning's article on him! It notes that he's prolific with Son but useless without him. So until Son's back I'm starting with Auba, then maybe switch him for Kane GW4 or so.
KdB + Auba? My choice would actually be Sterling + Vardy.

I just think the Villa home game looks primed for him to welcome them with a brace, with or without Son and i love his home fixtures up to Xmas. Only draft that looked vaguely reasonable with all 3 was playing a 4-3-3

        Pope (4)
        VVD-Trippier-Maguire-Coleman (4)
        Salah-Sterling-Zaha (4.5-4.5)
        Kane-King-Deulofeu

Hello everyone feels good to be back here!
40 days to KO and here's my first try:

    Ryan
    TAA - VVD - Laporte - Digne
    Salah - Sterling - Siggy - Zaha
    King - Deulofeu/Jota

    (Button / 4.5MID / 4.0DEF / 4.5FWD)
    0.0m

Would like to have Robbo & TAA over VVD but cash is very tight need 0.5m from somewhere.
Bilva vs Siggy is an interesting one currently leaning towards the latter for set pieces.

Also any nailed on starters from the 4.0m defs & 4.5m mids?

He has to 0itb so to fund an upgrade to Wilson he’d have to downgrade another player. So the question is really: is the difference between king and Wilson greater than a current player compared to the downgrade. I suspect not.

This team looks very competitive imo

I would also like one of them but I'm.priced out of them unless I'm making significant downgrades elsewhere.
