Can a price drop boost Harry Kane’s FPL appeal?

Harry Kane (£11.0m) has been handed an eye-catching starting price by the Fantasy Premier League decision-makers.

The Tottenham Hotspur striker is available for £11.0m going into Gameweek 1, the cheapest he has started a season since 2016/17.

Kane’s 2018/19 ended in frustrating fashion for the England centre-forward, with two separate ankle ligament injuries forcing him to miss ten of Spurs’ final 16 Premier League fixtures.

A total of 160 points represented his lowest FPL score in five seasons as a first-team regular in north London, although 23 attacking returns was more than any of his teammates managed and his points-per-match average of 5.71 was the second-best among FPL forwards in 2018/19.

With Kane’s starting price dropping by £1.5m on what it was 12 months ago, does he again become one of the more attractive premium options in the game?

The Members’ article below delves into the data to analyse Kane’s season and ponder his worth.

    Hey all.
i'm wondering what I can expect from a Chelsea side lead by Lampard. What kind of style did Derby play last season?

Dunno, but I think they were 6th when he joined and 6th when he left. Half the squad were loanees, so not sure if his Derby record informs much.

Apparently he played 4,3,3 the most. Possession based, attacking style. Had MFs shooting from outside the box. He also played 4,2,3,1 at times.
I'm guessing: Kepa, Azpi, Christensen, Luiz, Alonso, Kante, Jorginho, Kovacic, Pedro, Giroud, Willian. James, RLC, CHO all injured. Pulisic plays right will compete with Pedro. Barkley compete with Kovacic / Jorginho

4-3-3 the majority of the time, occasionally 4-2-3-1. They finished 21st in the the division for xG, somehow finishing 6th, so its hard to know if Lampard is any good or not. Personally feel another season in the Championship with Derby would be best.

To me, Lampard is going in as a fans' favourite because the hierarchy know it is going to be a tough season. And someone like him is going to get more slack from the fans.

That's my thinking, and they're prepared to write off the season to give him a chance to blood the youngsters. It's not a bad long-term strategy (insofar as Chelsea have never had one!) but for us, it means writing them off as FPL material this season.

Why would you write all of their assets off? Could still be value in the likes of Willian even if they finish mid table.

I think defensively they’ll still manage over 14 CS. Thats enough to warrant a +150p nailed defender for 6.0m.

          Chelsea CS
          2018/19: 16
          2017/18: 16

Unsure if there is a need for a new striker right now if Kaku goes,I feel Martial or Greenwood could be the back up for Rashford. I know you'll probably say Greenwood isn't proven but look at Rashford, you have to break through at some stage. Kaks money should be spent on the defense and mid.

I thought drops are based on % of ownership that transfer out, so the lower ownership would have no impact.

Rises are based on a fixed amount for all players.

I could be wrong but that’s the observation I made from fpl statistics delta amounts

        1. Andy_Social
          • 11 Years
          4 years, 9 months ago

Right, but all the 4.5 options currently have very low ownership so it isn't an issue.
HOWEVER, you've just alerted me to where it is important - the second-most highly owned keeper is Button. I suppose if he drops to 3.9 it doesn't matter if you don't sell him, but even so, you've convinced me to get someone else to nail his gloves to the bench.

None of them are starters. Nketiah, Wickham, any of them could do cameos off the bench. But you get a 4.5 to nail to your bench.

3-5-2 draft with Salah and Mane:

    Ryan
VVD | Zinchenko | El Mohamady
    Salah | Mane | Bilva | Fraser | Zaha
    Kane | Long

    Button | Kelly | Rico | 4.5 striker

    Thoughts?

VVD | Zinchenko | El Mohamady | Kelly
      Salah | Mane | Sterling | Dendoncker
      Kane | King

      Button | Rico | Hayden | 4.5 striker

Doesn't actually feel too bad considering.

Me too. Am I currently the only person starting without Salah or Mane and banking 2m to get one in when they're ready? My short-term Liverpool place-holder is Origi!

i think Origi could be a nice differential early on, depending on who else liverpool buy. Firmino is still at the Copa America and Origi was in decent form at the end of last season.

I've got the same GK pairing plus Kelly as well. With AWB leaving I think he's a steal at 4m. MIdfield looks weak but you'd probably need to sacrifice either Salah or Aguero to upgrade.

Thanks Bark, I had Siggy originally without Kun and with Vardy which was fine but he’s trolled me before and I think WardP can do a similar job on set pieces. Just scared about not having Aguero at all and it’ll be easier to sell an expensive asset than gain one I think. Has been for the past decade anyway..

I’m confused who your starting 11 is. There seems to be more bench fodder than bench slots. Also of the 2 forward options the combined price of each pair does not look similar. Something close to 18m versus 13.5m

Hi FT, bench Kelly, Fred, Button, Leitner for first week. Will play 3-4-3 as Social says, it depends on whether I fancy King or Deulofeo up top. It does mean I’m depending on WP smacking in a few free kicks regularly but I’m hoping another 2 horse title race means the big 3 raking in the points as usual makes up for a better looking midfield

Not looked at fixtures yet but this is my first draft:

    Ryan / Button
    TAA / VVD / Stones / Diop / Kelly
    Sterling / Mane / Richy / Fraser / Guendozi
    Wilson / Jimi / Long

I usually like to have a decent bench but this is the best budget options I can come up with so far. If Zaha and McGuire go to Arsenal and City, then I'd be looking to squeeze them in at those prices.

    My deadteam with perma cap

    Ederson.
    VVD(vc). Robo. Lapo. Azpi. Digne.
    Salah(c). Sigurdsson.
    King. Jimenez. Vardy.

    Button. Kanté. Ndidi. Stephens.

Ok, so it’s a 5-2-3 setup, but hear me out. Every attacker is a penalty taker and in-form. Every player in the starting 11 has over 35 starts last seasons. My outfield bench had 37, 37, 30 starts. This team would have gotten a top 1k finish last season. Perma cap Salah (expecting him to get around 280-300p as I believe Liverpool will mainly focus on winning the league this season.)

I will not use any chips or transfers. Hoping for a top 10k finish.

Salah has had his agent touting for a move for the past year or so. I wouldn't be surprised if he left before the season started tbh

Number 1: how do you know all strikers are in form, the season hasn't started.

Number 2: The team would have gotten top 1k because it was for last season, easy to pick when its over.

Number 3: I hope you're just trolling not using chips haha

1: in-form based on last seasons performance. No injuries, above average PPG, etc.
        2: Merely stating. Not forecasting.
        3. Not trolling. I ended top 10k with a dead team 2017/18 without using transfers or chips.

I can tell you why. I work as a financial analyst and I also manage a hefty stock portfolio. My trade windows are 1-3 years and so this style of play suits me personally. I pick players I believe in and stick to my horses. Where I work there are four other lads that play dead teams with no chips as well. Its just the way we like to play FPL, and it erases the grind of having to follow the game closely every gameweek, time that most of us don’t have due to work, family, etc, and so
it levels the playfield for evwry participant. It forces everyone to think carefully when setting up and the rest is left to the PL gods. Also, we believe the wildcards, and chips ruin the game about. We like it hardcore. Oh, and there’s money involved.
We like it this way- that’s whats important.

Yeah, for a mini league where you're all on the same rules that's cool. I play a weekly mini league and one guy gave up on his squad after 2 weeks. Over the next 36 GWs he actually won - once.

I think I've finally cracked it:

    5-3-2

    Lloris (Button)
    TAA, Bednarek, Digne, Dunk, Robbo
    Salah, Siggy, Sterling (Dendonckor, Guendouzi)
    Vardy, King (Greenwood)

Very similar to mine but I have KDB over sterling to fund big upgrades on dunk and bednarek. You happy playing 2 of those 4.5s every week ?

      1. ClothedinSun
        • 5 Years
        4 years, 9 months ago

So I toyed with KDB over Sterling but it's a big leap and with Dunk now captain / Bednarek seemingly nailed with Hass I thought they could offer some cheap options with steady points without the Sterling sacrifice? I've one eye on Fredericks/Aarons for potential 4.5 attacking returns once those fixtures pick up after gw 1 too...

        1. Ask Yourself
          • 7 Years

They may be nailed but they play in shite defences. It’s a big jump to the premium defenders on the other hand

            • 5 Years
            4 years, 9 months ago

This is the problem! From about 4.5 mil up to the 5.5 mil category, it is a bit of a wasteland with only marginal potential for more points despite the price...Maybe once management and recruitment settles down nearer the season start I'll be convinced to change things up a bit. Cheers!

I like this a lot mate, so am finding it hard to criticise! I would probably set and forget Lloris (I have in my own team!) downgrade Fab to Button and upgrade Mane to Salah... or one of your forwards to Jiminez, maybe Jota?

Cheers pal. Yeah I think Salah is a must, especially with VAR being introduced - so many more penalties to be won. GK's are expensive to be fair, will look at some cheap options now.

I assume you've got naff all on the bench? Moura will be dropped when Son's back and Jota could be rotated if he has a heavy Thursday night. Lose Flappy and spend at least 0.5m on a viable benchie.

That’s a lot of 6.5 up top. It gives you no wriggle room in transfers.

Do you expect Deeney to outperform Luiz/Azpi?

I know Son is out but a semi hattie didn’t get Lucas a start in the final.

No Vardy for me because I’m limiting my funds up top to use on mids and def. But I see no reason why he won’t produce again this year, he’s one of the most dependable forwards.

Maddison is not in my team either. I have siggy in that 7-8m slot. Better fixtures and likely on pens. Once the fixtures swing I could change.

          Mmm, so-so.
Fine at the back, but Noble doesn't get guaranteed minutes any more and neither does Long. You'll be stuck with Dunk or Diop in some nasty fixtures.

This is a nice team! as just about everyone on here has said about Mili - I am just not convinced he's going to deliver, over the likes of Maddison (also 7 mil), if Zaha leaves. Would also argue that VVD offers more points potential than LaPorte...

I personally think Moutinho is a better option than people give him credit for. Not sure on Noble, you'd have to be relying a lot on set pieces.

Best strikers 6.5 or under? Apart from the usual king / jota

DCL at 6 could be useful

Had Ings last year, when he played he was useful, but so many niggles.

      DCL probably the standout.
Ings is quality and can score against any team, just a question of his fitness. Mixed bag of games to start the season.

If Everton don't sign a striker in this window I'll change my name to Assface.

My draft today has Richarlison and DCL, Assface 😉

How's this for a first Draft? - constructive criticism welcome:

    Loris (Button)
    VVD Aurier Ake (Dunk, Elmohamedy)
Mane BSilva Fraser McArthur (El Ghazi)
    Kane Firmino King

Aurier obviously a risk (though less so if Trippier leaves) and also doubles up on Spurs defence - but overall early fixtures look decent. Likewise triple Bournemouth may seem a bit too much, though fixtures also look decent, and thinking subs should help cover some of the fixture risk there.

Aurier had a serious injury a few days ago. Should be out for a while.

most template players here will comment that your team doesn't have any Everton players (for their amazing fixtures), so therefore your team is only 3/10

Daft remark, but 3/10 is about right.
As Godfrey says, Aurier is out.
Firmino might be rested after a summer of football, as might Mane.
Bilva is not a prolific FPL asset, McArthur does naff all even when he plays.
I'd move swiftly on to your second draft, tbh.

Ere we go lads. First RMT of the year.

    Ryan (Button)
    Robertson, TAA, Walker (Dunk, Kelly)
De Bruyne, Zaha, Sigurdsson, Madisson (Dendoncker)
    Kane, Firmino, King

Is Firmino getting overlooked? There will be heavy rotation of Mane/Salah at the beginning.

Having said that team doesn't lend itself well to getting Mane/Salah in when required.

    Thoughts appreciated.
