What FPL managers can expect from Brighton winger Leandro Trossard

Graham Potter has made his second signing since being appointed manager of Brighton and Hove Albion.

Belgian winger Leandro Trossard (£6.0m in Fantasy Premier League) has joined the Seagulls for an undisclosed fee, penning a four-year contract.

Trossard heads to Albion from Genk, where he scored 14 goals and registered seven assists in 34 league outings for the Belgian side in 2018/19.

The 24-year-old midfielder, who plays primarily on the left flank, follows in the footsteps of Portsmouth centre-back Matthew Clarke (£4.5m) in making the move to Brighton.

Defender Matthew Clarke (in blue) signed a four-year deal with Brighton days before Leandro Trossard’s capture was announced

Sporadic interest in Glenn Murray (£6.0m) and Pascal Gross (£6.5m) aside, we have generally been more focused on Brighton’s defenders from a Fantasy perspective in the Chris Hughton era.

The Seagulls have averaged less than a goal a game in each of their first two seasons as a Premier League club.

The appointment of the more forward-thinking Potter may change the defence-first mentality that was favoured by Hughton, as we discussed in our recent report on the former Swansea City manager.

Pre-season will certainly be an interesting watch, given that Brighton have one of the best opening run of fixtures in the first six Gameweeks of 2019/20.

Upon signing for the Seagulls, Trossard said of his conversations with Potter:

He told me that he wants to change the system a little bit to get more attractive football, like attacking, more my style.

I think that’s the most important thing for me, that I can fit in the team and help the team get results.

Trossard’s comments are a further indication that Potter will attempt to show a bit more ambition going forward next season.

The new Brighton boss added:

We are delighted to welcome Leandro to the club and excited about the impact he can have for us.

He’s an attack-minded player who had a very impressive season last year in helping Genk win the league title.

He was influential in the side’s success last term and scored a lot of goals, as well as creating chances for others.

At 24 he also brings good experience, having captained the side and also featured many times in the Europa League.

The History and Statistics

Trossard celebrates his goal in the 2016/17 Europa League quarter-final tie against Celta Vigo

Born in the municipality of Maasmechelen in December 1994, Trossard joined Genk’s youth academy in 2010 and has been on the books of his boyhood club ever since – although has had four loan spells away from the club.

Trossard’s first taste of senior football came as a 17-year-old at the end of the 2011/12 campaign, a four-minute cameo against Gent in the Jupiler Pro League play-offs being his only run-out that season.

A loan spell at second-tier club Lommel United followed in 2012/13, with Trossard scoring seven goals in 12 run-outs.

Trossard scored on only three occasions in 17 league appearances for Westerlo the following campaign, before the young winger rejoined Lommel for a second time in 2014/15.

Trossard hit the back of the net on 16 occasions in 33 run-outs for the Proximus League club, also finding the target once in the end-of-season play-offs.

After three years in the Belgian second tier, Trossard’s breakthrough campaign in the Jupiler Pro League came in 2015/16 – although not with Genk.

Trossard’s fourth and final loan spell saw him join OH Leuven in the top flight, where he registered 15 attacking returns (eight goals, seven assists) in 30 appearances.

The past three seasons have seen Trossard establish himself in the first team at Genk, although injury affected his availability in 2017/18.

His league record (including play-offs) from 2016/17 onwards reads:

YearApps (Starts + Sub)GoalsAssists
2016/1731 (19+12)63
2017/1816 (14+2)72
2018/1934 (32+2)147

Trossard had his first taste of European football in 2016/17, scoring three goals as Genk made it to the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

The new Brighton signing and his club made it to the round of 32 in the same competition last season, with Trossard registering eight goals and three assists in 11 appearances on the continent.

Trossard was made the captain of Genk midway through last season, leading his club to their first league title since 2010/11.

The Prospects

Alireza Jahanbakhsh didn’t manage a single attacking return in 2018/19

A multi-million-pound signing of a goalscoring winger from Europe is treated with as much caution as it is excitement in the Fantasy community these days.

In our recent Scout Report of Moussa Djenepo we cited the cautionary tale of Mohamed Elyounoussi (£5.5m), who was snapped up by Southampton 12 months ago for a reported £16m.

Having registered 26 attacking returns in his final campaign with Basel, Elyounoussi finished his debut Premier League season without a single goal or assist to his name.

For Elyounoussi at Southampton, read Alireza Jahanbakhsh (£6.0m) at Brighton.

The Iranian winger banked 33 attacking returns in his farewell season at AZ Alkmaar, finishing as the Eredivisie top scorer with 21 goals.

Like Southampton’s misfiring Norwegian, Jahanbakhsh ended an admittedly injury-affected 2018/19 campaign without having recorded a single goal or assist in FPL.

The upside for Trossard is that he will be playing under a manager with a more positive mindset than Jahanbakhsh did last season, so attacking players may flourish in this new-look Brighton side.

Potter may even have plans to play both of these wingers in his seemingly favoured 4-2-3-1, although he is well-stocked with other options on the flanks in the form of Solly March (£5.0m), Anthony Knockaert (£5.5m), Jurgen Locadia (£5.5m) and the permanently crocked Jose Izquierdo (£5.5m).

Izquierdo, indeed, will miss the start of the 2019/20 season after having further knee surgery.

Given that Trossard played for a title-winning side in the Belgian top tier, it will be no surprise that he comes out of a direct comparison with his new teammates for underlying stats very positively:

PlayerMins per shotMins per shot in boxMins per shot on targetMins per big chanceMins per key passMins per big chance created
Trossard22.141.060.6174.339199

Knockaert67.9122.2203.7916.552306
Gross78.2117.3208.4312.735208

Apart from Gross’s superior rate of key passes and Murray’s lower average for big chances, Trossard comes out on top in all of the above categories.

Sergio Aguero (£12.0m) was the only first-team regular in the Premier League to have a better minutes-per-chance average than Trossard, meanwhile.

Trossard’s total of 126 shots was better than all other FPL midfielders bar Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), while the Egyptian and Sadio Mane (£11.5m) were the only players in the Belgian’s position to register more shots in the box (68).

Trossard was presented with 16 big chances, which would have seen him ranked joint-sixth among FPL midfielders.

A total of 72 key passes was inferior to only eight Fantasy midfielders, while 14 big chances created was bettered by just four players in this positional group.

Lucas Digne (£6.0m), Matt Ritchie (£5.5m) and Ryan Fraser (£7.5m) were the only Premier League players to deliver more crosses than Trossard in 2018/19 – all FPL assets, like the Belgian, who took free-kicks and corners for their respective sides.

The huge asterisk next to all of Trossard’s statistics is that these were numbers recorded in the Jupiler Pro League, not the English top flight.

Most of the winger’s averages will likely worsen significantly next season, such is the gulf in class between the two divisions.

The Belgian seems likely to challenge for a spot on the left flank, according to journalist David Van den Broeck, although could operate in ‘the hole’ if Potter opts for a 4-2-3-1.

In an interview with regional newspaper The Argus, den Broeck said:

Genk for the last five or six years have played 4-3-3. He has played as a left-winger all the time.

If you asked him his favourite position he would say number ten behind the striker as well, but that is a usual thing with wingers, they like to play in a central position, but he is better with space on the left.

He has a good left foot as well. Izquierdo, when he played in Belgium, was good but quite predictable because he was always coming inside onto his right foot.

Trossard can come inside, go outside, no problem. His shot is his main quality. When he is around 16 metres and he has got the opportunity to shoot he can put them nicely in the top corner with both feet.

He is a small guy who can turn easily around defenders with his quick acceleration.

We usually preach a “wait and see” policy with signings such as these and in Djenepo’s case, that would seem to be sensible given how tricky Southampton’s fixtures look (with a few exceptions) in the first 13 Gameweeks of the campaign.

Trossard and Brighton, though, are towards the top of our Season Ticker in the first six Gameweeks, with matches against West Ham, Southampton, Burnley, Newcastle and Watford to come in that period.

We’ll have a careful eye on the Seagulls in pre-season, then, to see if we have a potential mid-price gem on our hands or just another import to overlook for Gameweek 1.

With Gross being available for only £0.5m more and having already demonstrated his Fantasy potential in 2017/18, Trossard will have to dazzle in pre-season for many of us just to consider him the go-to Brighton option, never mind a player able to compete with the likes of Dwight McNeil, Roberto Pereyra and Miguel Almiron in the £6.0m bracket.

A word of caution for those looking to litter their squads with penalty takers due to the introduction of VAR:

      Well done great find.
      It shatters the myth.
People never think that VAR can cancel penalties as well as cause them.

The premier league is the most watched in the world. It is still a human decision at the end of the day and they will feel under immense pressure to give the penalty rather than not. We saw this in an equally pressured environment in this women’s World Cup and the 2018 men’s World Cup. High pressure = more penalties

The refereeing standard at the Women's World Cup is shocking. On top of that, they introduced a rule that has caused chaos - this rule isn't going to be used in terms of VAR in the PL next year.

The issue with drawing comparisons from a tournament is the sample size is too small to give you enough data to make a good judgement. On top of that, the disparity between the standard of players is very high at a World Cup - so the poorer teams are more likely to give away penalties through bad defending.

In terms of pressure, I think the UCL is a pretty pressurized environment to be playing football. In 2016/17 (without VAR) there were 53 penalties given. In last season's competition there were 35. I don't think high pressure = more penalties.

The thing about VAR for me is that it encourages players to go down even with the slightest contact. If the ref sees even a touch on someone’s leg or foot he will give the penalty, even if the contact is too slight to bring the player down. This means forwards are looking to make contact and then fall to the ground. Imo VAR is going to make this kind of diving more common in football, and commentators don’t help with comments like “there was contact” because football is a contact sport. It seems contact in the box is all but gone already though 🙁

With VAR, rather than just a ref calling it, won't the divers/simulators be found out after a closer look?

No, because creating a slight contact and falling over is no longer seen as diving. That’s my point, players know if there is a slight touch on them and they go down they will get a pen from the refs, and commentators often agree with this.

So instead of focusing on penalty takers we should all be looking at which players have the most touches in the box and mopping up assist points!

¨On one thing most fans do agree: the VAR is causing a substantial increase in penalties, which are awarded for fouls near the goal. After 32 World Cup matches, marking the halfway point, referees have awarded 16 spot-kicks, which is twice the usual rate for the tournament. Six of them were given after the VAR intervened.¨

The article sites several leagues that shows very little difference in the seasons before but those leagues they state were inconclusive, although the one English speaking league (US) saw a spike. They´ve delt with video replays in other sports for years. Given the empirical evidence sited in the article, theoretically there should be a spike. Given the microscopic tendencies of English televised sports...my money is on more penos...

Can´t disagree with that either...to be honest the handball rule needed ¨augmenting¨. We all know a cheeky touch when we see it...

That being said, those types of flags are real mood/momentum killers.

Here's the definitive answer: No one knows.

However, there were 103 penalties taken in the PL last year. 82% of those were scored. On average 2.2 penalties per GW were scored. 36 Players scored a penalty last season.

This means the average Premier League penalty taker scored 0.07 goals per game from the penalty spot (which equates to around 1/3rd of a point per game)

How much of an effect is VAR going to have to have to make that much of a difference to fantasy scores?

You can make a case for including Milivojevic or King, but that's probably about it.

Why is no one mentioning the players who have the most touches in the box or get fouled the most? And given all these penalties are getting given, why is everyone going with 5atb??

I wonder if we possibly see a increase in penalties in the early weeks before a leveling off effect takes place and players stop pulling shirts in the box, dragging etc...
From watching the Women's World cup VAR was used extensively in the early part of the tournament but a lot less now in the latter stages.

Very hard to say. If they all play the same game time I'd say Yarmolenko is the most direct and will be involved at the cutting edge, Antonio too but wouldn't put money on a starting place now.
Fornals and Lanzini I'd want to wait and see their role. Both might be frustrating to own. Anderson is streaky and you have to time it well basically.

Yes. Fred will be a bench player for me anyway but one of the best 4.5 options. Targett and Lascelles, maybe Aarons if not. I'm hoping Dawson comes in at 4.5, but that seems unlikely.

I agree, big fan of their fixtures, but at the same time I don't trust them enough (yet) to spend 7m on Anderson or Arnautovic. What about Noble at 5m? On penalties, 5 goals and 5 assists last season, could he offer value?

I think we'll start to see him lose gametime gradually myself. But he's a reasonable 5m pick because of penalties and with Yarmo, Lanzini, Fornals etc. I suspect he'll get plenty.

Draft 3! 1.5itb - how best to use? Ederson?

    Heaton
    Robbo / TAA / Digne / Zinchenko / Maguire
    Salah / Sterling / Sigurdsson / Yarmolenko
    King

    Button / Jorginho / Greenwood / Wickham

Hoping Maguire goes to City and both him and Zinchenko are starters. If not Laporte/Coleman/Trippier all in mind for these two spots

A little worried about 1 up front if anything happens to King before a game dropped / injured etc I'd be starting with 10.

It's a good team bud, nothing wrong with just starting with that cash in the bank but I would go Ederson yeah

I'd say just keep an eye on Yarmolenko preseason along with Zinchenko.

I like the Coleman pick myself - considering the double with Digne.

Great point about only having 1 up front, I hadn't thought of that... makes me want to consider 442...

Thanks. Yeah Zinchenko could become Coleman/Trippier depending on pre-season. Spare Cash could go to Yarmo to Zaha if it looks like he wont get a starting spot, I do like the look of him though.

If I changed to 2 up top I'd prob lose Zinchenko and upgrade Wickham to Ings/Adams(price depending)

That's how I had it, but don't fancy much at 6.5, Had Jota, could maybe do as a placeholder and move to Pukki when fixtures improve. Just seems better value in 4-5-1.

I'm not sure I'd want to be starting Diop and Jorginho every game given you have no playing bench. I'd be a little worried about Jimi being rested too with them in Europe this year. KDB is immense but he probably will not play every game with his knee issues last season so be wary of no playing bench players again. Rest of starting lineup looks solid.

Begovic is not nailed, plus it's a feast or famine with Bournemouth defence, they conceded 70 goals last season. Noble is just a complete punt and looking at reduced minutes. I would also be worried about Aguero who was subbed off in 23 of his 31 starts last year (74%) so unless he scores early you are in trouble.

Now I'm back my holiday I should hopefully get to replying to others posts rather than being selfish. For now, here's my "basic structure" draft I'm happy with until after some preseason games / transfers.

    Ryan/Button
    TAA Robb Digne Zinch Diop
    Salah Siggy Zaha Brooks Dendocker
    Aguero King Greenwood

Very "early template" but I like Aguero over Sterling for flexibility of squad at first. Southampton, Leicester, Targett, Brooks, Fraser, Zinch and Kelly are all my main focus in preseason. Not overly sold on Zaha and may go Townsend/Grealish to allow Fraser if required. Also if Leicester and/or southampton look good I'll be tempted by Maddison and Redmond/Ings/Adams depending on form.

Amazing all-round stats set pieces pace stamina strength, and is a speed merchant.
Great off the ball and finishing as well.

They got Pereira spot on last year for Leicester. It convinced me to sign him when I looked it up the attributes.
Normally they are fairly accurate more often than not,
        Trossard is obviously highly rated.

How does he compare to someone like Fraser?

      1. Wrong Captain Choice - Ag i…

Fraser is rated highly in the game as well not as good at set pieces as Trossard though.

        https://i.imgur.com/EmOfDDw.png

But if you do a player comparison - the game rates Fraser as a slightly better winger than Trossard.
But rates them as the same for attacking midfielder.

        https://i.imgur.com/pVcLimE.png

Interestingly the game seems to think that Trossard would be way better straight midfielder than Fraser - even though neither are listed as such.
        In other words central midfield.

As per reply to post above
Aguero was subbed off in 23 of his 31 starts (74%), the most of any player (Bernard at Everton was 2nd (21 times)). Unless he scores in the first half captainers are going to be sweating on him come the 60 minute mark.

Most are going sterling because he is the same price gets more for a goal, clean sheets.
Plus in theory he is not as streaky as Aguero - Sterling can also score away.

I think Christensen is a liability defensively. Paired with Luiz looks terrible and even worse if Alonso is in the team too. Rudiger and Zouma should be Chelsea's CB pairing IMO. The loss of Hazard is a blow too - Chelsea will face more defensive pressure without him in the team.
