Pre-Season

Liverpool assets popular in early FPL squads

Five days after Fantasy Premier League was launched for the 2019/20 campaign, we are taking our first look at the ownership figures to see which assets are popular among the Fantasy community.

We’ll be doing this on a semi-frequent basis throughout the summer to see which trends are developing as injuries, new signings, pre-season form and international tournament minutes shape our thinking.

As is always the case at this time of year, the ‘auto-pick’ selections are skewing the figures towards mid-price assets (£5.5m goalkeepers, £6.0m defenders, £7.0m midfielders and £7.5m-£8.5m forwards).

Nevertheless, some early patterns are forming.

Goalkeepers

FPL ownership figures for goalkeepers as of midday on July 2. The ownership percentages are given in the right column.

Alisson (£6.0m), the top-scoring FPL goalkeeper of 2018/19 and the Golden Glove winner to boot, is the most popular asset between the sticks, perhaps as Fantasy managers seek out a cheaper route to a Liverpool defensive double-up following price rises elsewhere.

David Button (£4.0m) is the go-to bench fodder option currently but teammate Mathew Ryan (£4.5m) is the most popular budget shot-stopper, with the Seagulls faring well on our Season Ticker in the first six Gameweeks.

A price rise for Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) hasn’t deterred 11.9% of FPL managers from drafting in the West Ham custodian, while Jordan Pickford (£5.5m) – who kept ten clean sheets in 18 league starts this calendar year – narrowly trails behind the Poland international.

Of the goalkeepers we know are first choices at their respective clubs, Vicente Guaita and Martin Dubravka (£5.0m) are proving the least popular, sitting in just over 1.0% of FPL squads.

Defenders

FPL ownership figures for defenders as of midday on July 2. The ownership percentages are given in the right column.

Price rises for Andrew Robertson (£7.0m), Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.0m) haven’t translated into a fall in demand, with these three Liverpool defenders among the four most-popular assets in their position and each boasting an ownership of at least 30%.

Perhaps surprisingly, Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.5m) is still proving en vogue despite a £1.5m price hike.

There are many factors that will be shaping this – a nostalgia for his displays last season, a move to Manchester United and a higher rate of ‘casuals’ playing the game at this stage of the year – but a 34.1% ownership is still eyebrow-raising, given his dearth of attacking returns last season.

As we have discussed, £6.0m-rated options such as Matt Doherty, Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy will be benefiting from auto-pick selections with still over five weeks to go until Gameweek 1.

Lucas Digne‘s (£6.0m) popularity can’t just be attributed to his price tag, however, given that his ownership is head and shoulders above any other defender available at £6.0m.

Martin Kelly (£4.0m) is the bargain-basement defender that over one in five FPL managers has opted for, either just as bench fodder or perhaps with a hope that he will fill the void left by Wan-Bissaka at Selhurst Park – although Kelly was deputising more at centre-half in the season run-in.

Jamaal Lascelles (£4.5m) is the most popular “nailed” defender available for less than £5.0m, sitting in 10.3% of squads, with Issa Diop (£4.5m) – linked with a move to Manchester United this summer – not far behind on 9.0%.

Seamus Coleman and Oleksandr Zinchenko (both £5.5m), two cheaper routes into the Everton and City defences, sit in just 3.3% and 2.5% of FPL squads respectively.

Midfielders

FPL ownership figures for midfielders as of midday on July 2. The ownership percentages are given in the right column.

A small price drop for Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) has perhaps aided the Egyptian’s appeal in the Fantasy community, with the Liverpool winger the most-selected midfield asset at the time of writing.

Price rises for Raheem Sterling (£12.0m) and Sadio Mane (£11.5m) haven’t aided their cause but they are still among the top five most popular players in their position.

Kevin De Bruyne (£9.5m) sits in only 11.8% of FPL squads despite a price cut and, interestingly, Fantasy managers are moving increasingly for Bernardo Silva (£8.0m).

Wilfried Zaha‘s (£7.0m) ownership figure will, as we have emphasised, be inflated due to auto-pick selections.

As with Digne, though, his popularity can’t just be attributed to his cost – a positional reclassification, coupled with speculation over a possible move to a ‘big six’ club, will no doubt be boosting interest.

Decent early fixtures for Bournemouth and Everton have seen many keep faith with Ryan Fraser (£7.5m) and Gylfi Sigurdsson (£8.0m) despite price hikes, while Jack Grealish (£6.0m) is proving relatively popular at this early stage – the Villa midfielder currently sits in 10.4% of FPL squads.

Spurs, Arsenal and Manchester United midfield assets are largely being overlooked, with not one owned by more than 7% of Fantasy bosses.

Forwards

FPL ownership figures for forwards as of midday on July 2. The ownership percentages are given in the right column.

Raul Jimenez (£7.5m) is currently the most-owned FPL asset in any position.

While auto-pick selections have to be taken into account, the fact that he is way ahead of Callum Wilson (£8.0m), Marcus Rashford (£8.5m) and Romelu Lukaku (£8.5m) – all players who feature in heavily in auto-pick squads – speaks volumes as to his popularity.

Sergio Aguero (£12.0m) and Harry Kane (£11.5m) are owned by more than one in five Fantasy managers but the big hitters in attack are generally not as popular as their midfield counterparts, as we expected.

A decent number of Fantasy managers are turning to Josh King and Diogo Jota (both £6.5m) as a cheaper way of covering Wilson and Jimenez, while Gerard Deulofeu (£6.5m) is still fairly sought-after despite his positional change.

Alexandre Lacazette and Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) both feature in 7.6% of FPL squads, as does Teemu Pukki (£6.5m).

Shane Long (£5.0m) is the most-owned budget forward option but the recent signings of Danny Ings (£6.0m) and Che Adams will no doubt dent his appeal regarding game-time.

Well, they will have took a big step to sorting out the defence, which is the foundation for any winning team, although I'm not convinced Maguire is worth that kind of cash, I'd sooner buy Alderwield, and use him for a couple of years.

Big steps? Let's say they land Maguire. Who would line up next to him? Still a lot of Dross to choose from there. Then you still need a protector in front of the defence... Matic past him prime... I dunno. Looks like it might be another long year.

Its going to be Lindelof, I'm not saying the team are going to win the league, but with a new good CB, and AWB at RB, they will be a lot more solid, and IMO they have taken good steps to resolve the defence issues.
Any strong team needs a settled back line, and Utds was anything but for the last 3/4 years.
Still need at least 2 cm, and thats before pogba leaves.

Leicester have every right to hold out for more (as do WH for Diop) and I hope they put the screws on the 'big clubs', but I'm not even sure he's all that. When my team plays Pool for example, I'm thinking "Cripes, Van Dijk is immense", but with Maguire, yes you get the commitment, but a bit of trickery or pace and you're golden.
That all said, I hope he joins City, 5.5m would be a steal.

    One of the boys was saying that Brighton and Watford rotate really well for the full 38 weeks... With that in mind, would rotating;
    - Dunk/Dawson or Cathcart
    - Murray/Pereyra
Benching a £6m not the end of the world?

yeah, it kinda depends on the pair then maybe
for example WestHam/Wolves are pretty good, but Norwich/Palace is awful (fixture wise, not looking at quality of squads)

Indeed. But the goalkeeping situation is so unstable, that rotation is not foreseeable. I have always done it, and can't manage it, this year. So I'm choosing Brighton.

Can't do Everton, because of Digne, or Liverpool - valuable slot and too expensive.

You’d rather your players are playing Man City at home or Brighton away?

Arsenal at home or Watford away?

I’d expect the avoiding top six method is a more pointworthy practice than hitting home only games

Interesting timing as i just bottomed this on the previous article. I'm not sure i'm jumping on this big at the back bandwagon, especially the double up / triple up on Liverpool defence.

Do people really think the Liverpool trio are going to break 200pts each again, will they really get 10+ assists each again? I'm confident last season was an outlier from the norm for Liverpool and taking their performance out of the equation gives a much truer reflection of expectation and i would expect them to revert back to mean. Don't get me wrong, i will start with one of them in my side as they will be one of the best two or three sides defensively but double or triple up seems madness. In fact, since the start of the 12/13 season, defenders priced above 6m at season start (who played at least 2200 minutes or 2/3rds of available game time) have averaged 146 points.

21 Clean sheets for Liverpool is the best from any year in the last 10 seasons of premier league history. Teams know they need to press Liverpool's flanks to prevent TAA & Robbo getting forward and again they had an exceptional year in terms of assists. Other distractions as well like the club world champ are squeezing their fixture list further too. The top scoring defender is usually in the high 170's (as per Laporte this year). To highlight this these are the top 3 sides for clean sheets (last 10 years) and top DF scorer / most Df assists (since 12/13 season as don't have earlier data).

    18/19
    Liverpool 21
    Man City 20
    Chelsea 16
    Pts: Robertson (LIV) - 213 / Assists: TAA (LIV) - 13

    17/18
    Man Utd 19
    Man City 18
    Liverpool 17
    Pts: Azpicuelta (CHE) - 175 / Assists: Cresswell (WHAM)-Davies (TOT)-Trippier (TOT) - 7

    16/17
    Man Utd 17
    Tottenham 17
    Chelsea 16
    Pts: Cahill (CHE) - 178 / Assists: Walker (TOT) - 6

    15/16
    Arsenal 18
    Man Utd 18
    Man City 16
    Pts: Bellerin (ARS) - 172 / Assists: Rose (TOT) - 7

    14/15
    Chelsea 17
    West Brom 16
    Southampton 15
    Pts: Ivanovic (CHE) - 179 / Assists: Baines (EVE) - 9

    13/14
    Chelsea 18
    Arsenal 17
    Man City 16
    Pts: Coleman (EVE) - 180 / Assists: Kolarov (MCI) - 8

    12/13
    Man City 18
    Liverpool 16
    Arsenal 14
    Pts: Baines (EVE) - 177 / Assists: Baines (EVE) - 7

    11/12
    Man Utd 20
    Man City 17
    Newcastle 15

    10/11
    Man City 18
    Chelsea 15
    Man Utd 15

    09/10
    Man Utd 19
    Chelsea 18
    Liverpool 17

TL:DR - Liverpool's clean sheet record and their full backs assist record last season seems like an outlier from the mean i would expect some regression meaning a double / triple up could be risky.

Not with those early easy fixtures imo,
I am still going treble Liverpool defence
they are likely to have so much of the ball - opponents defending against the liverpool front three.

Looking at the first five liverpool fixtures it looks likely they could get 4 clean sheets - with the Arsenal game a tough one to cal.
I understand there might be some regression throughout the season.

But those early fixtures surely mitigate against regression in the short term.
      Norwich could get pulverised
Southampton are likely to try and keep it tight and nick a goal on the break -Redomonds pace etc
      Arsenal 50/50 game.
Burnley should play defensively and hope for a set piece
Newcastle will have no Rafa so I assume that means turmoil for a while.

They don't need to score 200 points. Some regression will be fine; if Robertson loses 20 points and TAA loses 1 point per game, they'd probably still be worth 7.0 (especially since we'll only know where the bargains are in hindsight).

I think people expect more than CS from Liverpool defenders.
Whilst what you say is correct, they're less likely to concede than other teams so it's no worse than having e.g. one Spurs and one Chelsea defender.

I will be trebeling up on pool defence.
It is only loss aversion that stops people if they get 6 one week, the 18 the other week will level it out.
Plus there are always the chance of assists or goals from the way they play.
I remember years ago the double united and double chelsea defence did well.
Also the season where Burnley were good defensively the double up worked.
Those who are afraid of the double or treble up's cannot hack all the points 'they lost' if a late goal is conceded.
It is easier for people to think of a midfielder or striker getting attacking points - they are not 'lost' they are 'gained'.
It just requires a change in mindset.

It won't be boring that is for sure!
Every shot on goal and every break by thier opponents will have me worried.
If/When there is a penalty against Liverpool that is when it will get really tense.

I plan to phase them out as cheap defenders emerge around gw5.

It's the same with any other 6-7.0 asset. They need to score or assist not to get a 2 pointer. Now what's more likely. Zaha/Maddy hitting 20G or Pool/City keeping 20CS?

To be honest, I haven't a clue, and I'm not entirely sure the manager does either. Something like

      Flappy
      Fredericks, Diop, Balbuena, Cresswell(Masuaku)
      Rice, Noble
      Yarmolenko(Snodgrass*), Lanzini(Nasri), Anderson(Antonio*)

Maybe Trossard for Brighton's good fixtures. If James starts and scores in GW1 his price will rocket, so it would make for an easy switch having a 6.0m mid ready to go.

El Ghazi worth a monitor over pre-season too, he might be a better option than McGinn.

It's possible, but your squad will obviously suffer. It would probably have to look something like this...

      Ryan
      Van Dijk, 4.5, 4.5
Salah, Sterling, 6.0 (Yarmolenko, Grealish), 5.0 (Noble), 4.5 (Dendoncker)
      Kane, Aguero

      Button, 4.5 def, 4.5 fwd, 4.0 def

      I wouldn't advise it really.
