Why it’s hard to trust Arsenal assets in 2019/20

Despite finishing as the top-scoring forward in 2018/19, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) is not expected to be a popular choice at the start of this new campaign.

In this first article of the Numbers Game series, we take a deep dive into virtually every statistic recorded by Arsenal in their first year under Unai Emery to assess their potential for 2019/20.

We will be producing one of these for each FPL side that competed in the Premier League last season between now and Gameweek 1.

As this uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members area, only those signed up for 2019/20 can view the article.

Arsenal have such a talented squad yet unappealing in fantasy football terms. Defence has been disappointing. I feel they need better holding mids to protect them. Guendouzi needs to improve.

Recent history shows it has been the defence and lack of steel that has been their downfall

As an Arsenal fan, I would say this is in fact one of the least talented squads we have had in quite a while. Auba and Laca carried the team last year. Besides them, we don't have any top top players

    TAA Laporte Target Gibson Kelly

Defence is an eye sore at the moment
Want Sterling but a rested Kane is an attractive choice

Is CHO likely to start the season?
Initial thoughts 4.5 4.0 4.0 in defence could be problematic if a playing 4.0 fails to appear.
Hopefully Dyche will confirm which of Heston / Pope are first choice for PL, and you can save another 0.5 at the back there.

Maybe Sterling over Salah allowing a third Pool defender in a 442? Too much money up front has lead you taking too many risks in rest of team imo.

    a)
    Begovic - Ryan
    Robertson - Digne - Lewis - Dunk - Kelly
    Salah - Richarlilson - Noble - Hayden - Brooks
    Kane - Aguero - Kodjia

    b)
    Begovic - Ryan

    King - Aguero - Kodjia

Kodjia highly unlikely to play. Villa's front 6:

El Ghazi - Wesley - Jota
      Graelish - Hourihane - McGinn

Yeah, no idea how likely it is though.

But McGinn is fantastic and would be a great Herrera replacement. Quick, good on the ball, not scared to tackle, and can cover the right flank when the RB gets forward.

Quite like the prospect of a Bournemouth double up top to start the season. Plenty options to downgrade either to in GW3 once a favourable budget striker option emerges. Currently on Wilson/King/4.5 myself

It seems my brief summary at the end has been accidentally cut off for some reason. Sorry about that 🙁

There doesn't appear to be a lot of cases of significant reduction in overall placement following qualification for Europa League, and if there is a noticeable negative change, it is largely only affecting non-"top-6" sides (aside from 2015/16 Liverpool).

Many of the teams seem to have had additional extenuating circumstances that likely contributed to their drop in table position (see Villa 2010/11 and West Ham 2016/17). Only Newcastle 12/13, Everton 14/15, and Burnley 18/19 had any significant drop without other extenuating circumstances, not accounting for injuries that may have occurred during the EL season in question

However, I do not know the details of the teams' rotation patterns, runs of form, or individual match performances, so take this with a grain of salt.

TLDR: Playing in the Europa League largely didn't affect a team's overall position by the end of the season. Notable exceptions were Everton 14/15, and Burnley 18/19.

Thoughts on this team? Captaincy rotation between Salah, KDB and Vardy feels ok. I’m not happy about 2 x 4.5m strikers but really like the rest of my team so struggling to find where I can find funds to upgrade (likely to a Bournemouth striker).

    Ryan (Button)
    TAA Robbo Laporte Digne Trippier

          I think it's GW2 and GW4 concerning me personally.
Zaha, do you really want him if he's facing Everton (you have Digne), OK you get Sheffield GW2, alternatively he goes to Arsenal, you really want any Arsenal assets? That's my personal thought process!

Zaha needs to be monitored with his transfer to Arsenal. I feel like if he goes I'd be reluctant to put him straight in my team knowing how much Emery rotates. Anf if the transfer saga continues until the end of the transfer window I don't think he'll be in a good spirit if he stays at Palace

    A) Kane + Deulefeu
    B) Vardy + Wilson

Maybe B with King instead of Wilson and reinvest the 1.5 in midfield?

A for me. Kane can be a captain a lot of weeks.

I need to save 0.5, which option would you prefer?

    A) Coleman over Digne
    B) VVD over Robbo
    C) VVD over TAA
    D) Walker/Mendy/Zinch over Laporte

    Cheers!

Walker over laporte, then vvd over taa, A and B not good options

Hows this lot looking so far?

    Ederson 4m
    VVD Azpi Digne Trippier Kelly
    Salah Bilva Siggy Zaha Dendoncker
    Kane King Greenwood

    Thanks in advance 🙂

Not keen on Trippier or Zaha personally

      Salah & Bilva > Mane & KDB?

Because they are linked away? If Zaha leaves then I won’t pick him but if he stays he’s huge for Palace. Tripps in there as Aurier is injured again.

Not too fussed about Mane, Salah way better value this year for me. Do like KdB though. Might wait and see how he starts, was so injury prone last season, whereas Bilva got better and better and was also decent at the Nations League for Portugal.

No because they have City GW2 and Arsenal GW4 and I don't see attacking or defensive returns on GW2 and I don't see defensive returns on GW4 (Trippier).

As above (a couple of comments up)... Zaha first game Everton, you have Digne(?), and if he goes Arsenal, who wants Arsenal assets and finally if he doesn't go and it drags out what's his motivation going to be like? Arnie 2.0?

Yeah, fair point about Trippier’s fixtures. Might change him and Kelly to a couple of nailed 5/4.5 nailed defenders.

Don’t mind Zaha and Digne playing each other too much. It happens and tbh they could both easily get attacking returns in that game. Yeah as I said won’t have Zaha if he goes to Arsenal.

Think his mindset won’t be like Arnie if he does stay - there was a similar situation with Spurs and Chelsea after him last year and he was fine when he stayed. Think he genuinely cares about Palace and respects them for giving him two chances in football, not sure Arnie cares too much about West Ham

Could do a Diop/Boly rotation (don't face a top 6 side all season).

I get it happens but I'd never set my team up week one for a situation like that, personally, but that's the beauty of this game (point being you could start with Moura and then go to Zaha)

I think he thinks it's his time now and they're not exactly strengthening.

Thanks, that Boly/Diop pairing could be good.

Yeah its not ideal, but I try and set my team up for the first 6-8 weeks to avoid an early WC. That Moura shout is a great idea though with Son banned.

Yeah I completely see what you’re saying re Zaha. Think its definitely one to monitor and see how it plays out!

    I love, and hate, constantly tinkering with my team. Arnie news has meant my team needs it's first bit of surgery for the season... Thoughts please;

    Pickford, Button
    Trent, Robbo, Laporte, Digne, Diop
    Sterling, Richar, Moura, Brooks, Jorginho
    Bobby, King, Greenwood

    Thoughts?

    Ederson 4.0

    TAA Robbo Digne Taylor Targett

    Salah Sterling Siggy Ayoze 4.5

    King Deulofeu 4.5

Targett/Taylor rotate very nicely and have good attacking potential. Not so sure on Deulofeu though.

    Ryan
    TAA, Robertson, Digne
    Salah, Sterling, Siggy, Zaha
    Deulofeu, King, Jota

    4.0 4.5 4.0 4.0

    Thanks in advance.

Very similar to mine as it stands now.

I am looking at that front line but maybe DCL instead of Deulofeu ?

Was considering him myself, just gonna see how he fairs in pre-season first, then revaluate.

Aubameyang is a good asset for me. Maybe not straight away, but definitely after a few GW's. Highest scoring striker last season for FPL points, golden boot winner playing with Iwobi and Mkhitaryan next to him. If we actually sign some proper wingers, he's going to hit 30 goals. But yeah, please steer clear everyone from him 😉

I feel like I can get 10 players in and then I get stuck. I’d need a 5.5 million defender or a 6.0 million mid or fwd.

    Allison
    VVD AWB Mendy
    Salah Bernardo Zaha Willian
    Aguero Giroud

Grealish? I think he's likely to be on pens which should boost his goals and will be first name in the team

      Coleman (Eve)?
      Barnes (Lei)?
      Boly/Jonny (Wol)?

Not too sure on the Willian pick. I'd be tempted to maybe get a Diop and at least upgrade to Pulisic if you want an attacking Chelsea midfielder?
