Why it’s hard to trust Arsenal assets in 2019/20

Despite finishing as the top-scoring forward in 2018/19, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) is not expected to be a popular choice at the start of this new campaign.

In this first article of the Numbers Game series, we take a deep dive into virtually every statistic recorded by Arsenal in their first year under Unai Emery to assess their potential for 2019/20.

We will be producing one of these for each FPL side that competed in the Premier League last season between now and Gameweek 1.

As this uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members area, only those signed up for 2019/20 can view the article.

I'm going Kun over Sterling. But getting KdB also. Nice differential yet possibly to my detriment (as usual)

I’m a stern believer of the 3-4-3 formation and have been adamant that I will stick to it this season, but I will likely start the season with a 4-4-2.

Clean sheets are statistically higher in August than any other month and I would like to capitalise on this.

Last season, midfielders proved better than forwards. Add Kane’s August curse, Arsenal’s tough fixtures ruling out Auba, and Aguero seemingly overpriced. I’d therefore rather lose a forward than a midfielder to get the 4th defender.

No doubt I will revert to a 3-4-3 when I need Aguero between GW3-11 and Auba/Laca between GW8-16, while keeping hold of the cheap striker that is returning.

I usually favour 3-5-2 but I'm starting this season with a 442 with 3 set defenders 2 rotating

        I’m on:

        Ryan Button
        TAA VVD Digne Walker Gibson

I think 2 LFC defenders is essential, or if not you’re missing out at the very least. Digne has a lot of promise with his fixtures and I simply couldn’t start the season without him. I then want a City defender/keeper and felt that Ryan+City defender was better than Ederson+4.5m defender and more flexible.

Walker could become a better City option for 6m max.

Who are you setting up with?

You could go Boly/Diop 5.0 & 4.5 and you'd miss last seasons top 6 every week if you rotated. Then you can have Ederson as a "set and forget"! Just to add fuel to your fire 😛

The logic sounds good in theory, but of West Ham’s 7 clean sheets last year:

            Games v top 6: 12
            Clean sheets v top 6: 3
            CS% v top 6: 25

            Games v non top 6: 26
            Clean sheets v non top 6: 4
            CS% v non top 6: 15.3

I would rather WHU defender v top 6 than against a non top 6.

We do play slightly more expansive against the "lesser" teams however, we were also finding out feet a lot last season, I expect better results this year. Same could be said for Wolves (in terms of their record against the top 6 in general, not just clean sheets)

I’m beginning to rethink Kane to start.

Don’t buy into the August curse rather it’s the lack of Son that might sway it. He goes really well with him - matches Sterling. But Kane Lucas is flop.

still playing around but this looks solid, obviously would be waiting on Zinchenko/Trippier
Trippier would be rotated with Jorginho for the first 4 games, hopefully that can work out

    Heaton (4.0)
    TAA VVD Digne Trippier Zinchenko
    Salah Sterling Siggy (Jorginho Donck)
    Wilson King (4.5)

FTs would probably be used on Digne/Trips/Zinchenko/Wilson/King and the rest can just be left to do their thing long-term, no jerk action

the problem obviously comes when a 6.5 mid or Vardy starts going big, assuming patience is pretty hard to keep in those situations?

        Not so sure

If you roll week 1 and keep a transfer in hand then the front 5 is fairly flexible. I’m currently looking at this sort of front 5 system.

There’s an if in there of course but I’m not averse to an aggressive hit either - especially early if it means adding tv value

yeah good point - I'm thinking Wilson/King/Jorginho/Trippier/Zinchenko could be shuffled around fairly easily after GW2 for a -4 (maybe even 8 if completely necessary)

      Awful.
The difference seems to be that everyone on here seems happy with just Salah and Sterling...but I want Kane too, which means my defence suffers in comparison.

I just can't see past the value in Kane.

Defo going with Kane. Haven’t really thought about Sterling or Salah. Which is a bit weird.

Kane, along with Zaha, and Digne are three players that I'm 99% sure will be in my GW1 team, purely down to the value I see in them.

Sterling is also pretty locked, as it's either him or Aguero, and I just prefer Sterling.

So it's either Salah and something like Gomez (if he looks preferred in preseason) + some rotating 4.5s.

          or

Robertson + VvD/TAA with someone like Maddison in midfield.

I still can't get passed this Zaha vs Digne GW1 when you could have someone else and switch to Zaha GW2 if you want him that badly.

Maddison/Siggy/Richar definitely all worth a punt. Not feeling Salah myself.

            1. HamezMace

I'm not really too concerned about that...I mean I don't actually think Zaha will be at Palace GW1 anyway, but even if he is, you're going to get players coming up against each other at some stage during the season, planning transfers never works...for me at least.

Salah looks like the most likely to drop out of my current draft right now.

If you have Kane and Sterling, the need for Salah is lower - you can then very feasibly go for a 4atb with triple Pool defence and Digne, and fit Sterling, Kane, Zaha in there too.

            Something like:

            4.5/4.0
            TAA, Robbo, Gomez, Digne, 4.0
            Sterling, Mads, Zaha, Siggy, 4.5
            Kane, Wilson, 4.5.

Personally I'm not desperate for Kane, but if I was, I'd be happy to sacrifice Salah and go triple pool defence

FWIW my own strategy this year is to start pretty safe and just go with a largely template team and so Salah + Sterling + two pool defenders are not leaving my team. I feel more worried about falling behind early on than keen to take a risk but break away

              Cheers Dan,
Yes this is probably the way I'm leaning, just nervous going for a team without Salah given how popular he'll be, especially as a GW1 captain pick.

Last year I started the season with Salah, Kane and Aguero, at the expense of my defence, and struggled trying to get the RAM combination that was bringing in all the points for everyone else.

So I'm reluctant to try and go Salah, Sterling, Kane this year and giving myself the same problem again.

I agree I have avoided both Salah, Mane, and Sterling in my favoured draft.
Kane is a great set and forget option.

But then again I am liable to captain anyone who I think will score well in any given gameweek - defenders-midfielders etc.
I just think the value is not there with Sterling and Salah.
Until cheaper defensive options like - Christensen/Zinchencko/4.0's emerge, I will not be getting them.
        Probably wildcard by then anyway.

As you've pointed out in the post below having the flexibility is important.
Lots of teams on here have two forwards like King, and Giroud for example, that doesn't give you many options if one of them needs to be transferred out.

I'm hoping preseason will help find us some options in the budget midfield area.

Staying fairly the same barring three changes here and there.
I started looking ahead at gw5 on to see can I get my price points right (for roughly moving towards options)
Looking at the potential of Lacazette gw6 onwards for example.
How to get Chelsea lads in as well maybe Leicester/West Ham and the defensive bargains.
I think it is important to play fpl like snooker and have rough plans leaving a pattern of options.
You don't want just one needs to be flexible.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Chelsea have the most clean sheets by GW 12.

Not sure about their attackers just yet, but the fixtures are there for them to capitalise. Giroud has my attention if he nails the starting place. William should be on set pieces. David Louis also set piece threat and CS potential.

There are loads of potential Chelsea options at thier prices
          Whoever starts as striker,
Loads of midfield options Willian CHO/RLC

As for Giroud, Chelsea have the joint 2nd easiest fixtures in the opening 12 gameweeks.

Once United are out the way, they only face LFC (h) - a fixture they have only lost twice in the last 10 occasions - of the top 6 in a spell of 11 games!

I think Siggy over Rich is an obvious switch due to set pieces and Rich likely Wide not up top.

Good balance and nice to see Aguero over Sterling which makes the price points easy for transfers.

I have not changed my team in a few days now and seem to be very happy it. I really like the idea of a triple Pool defence and rotating the captaincy between Kane and Sterling for first 3 gameweeks. I've also kept 1.0 ITB so I can do Kane to Aguero for GW 4. Thoughts on the team?

    Ryan
    VVD Robbo TAA Mendy Digne
    Sterling Zaha Sigurdsson
    Kane King

    Subs: Button, Dendoncker, Stephens, Greenwood

Excellent, Apart from Ederson for Ryan, I wouldn't change a thing. Unless in the Community Shield Zinky plays instead of Mendy, in which case you've saved yourself a further 0.5

Every year I tinker and change my draft squad daily, but this time I'm already sorted, with maybe just one midfield spot open for negotiation.

I like it to be honest.
Similar to mine except I went 4-3-3 gw1
KDB instead of sterling and have Wilson up front as well.
Treble liverpool defence is the way to go for the first five gameweeks.
You need to plan a rough exit strategy though after that.

So basically you are downgrading three players to afford Sterling. I think he isn't worth it. Especially as Salah/Mane are better captaincy options in the first two fixtures.

The Ederson to Ryan downgrade is huge. I have always gone for budget keepers, but this year the way the pricing is and it just doen't make sense. This donwgrade alone is almost 1.5ppm donwgrade on average. Although the other two downgrades aren't that steep.

Issue is, I'm a bit unsure about only having Salah as a captaincy option? Not sure Bilva could be trusted.

I don't like Bilva as well. I have just Salah as captaincy option for now. I have KDB from Man city. Better than Bilva and slightly easier to upgrade to Sterling. But more expensive than Bilva, so you need to get that money from somewhere.

Zaha likely to get the assists for Mili’s penalties, without the risk of having minus points for missed penalties.

Zaha is also a bigger threat throughout the game.

The only thing with pens is that I have no idea why Man city don't get more pens than they do. This was the reason I went with Aguero through most of last year, but they got so few.

Pretty much all my teams have featured Kane so far - I’m now thinking Laca could be a better option.

Rationale is treating weeks 1 and 2 as a block where I roll the transfer. Kane works best from week 3 when Son is back and the City game over. In weeks 1 and 2 Laca has two really tasty fixtures and seems highly unlikely to rotate.

    Putative weeks 1 and 2 front 5/6

    Sterling KdB Fraser
    Laca King (Giroud)

When Kane returns in 3 then I’d also think about moving on from Bournemouth

Yeah, I think it's the other way round. It's because those teams are so unattractive, that we have so many from City, Pool and especially Everton. It vastly restricts the pool of premium players and makes squads too similar.

    3. HamezMace
      • 9 Years
      4 years, 9 months ago

I'm quite sure I'll have a Chelsea player once pre-season tells us which way the manager is going to go, in terms of personnel.

Same with United, if Sanchez, James, or Martial perform well in preseason and nail down a place, I can see people swapping the likes of Sigurdsson/Maddison etc for one of them.

I have Kane from Spurs, and considering Rose/Trippier.

    5. CROCosta

It is a bit weird but easily understandable:
MAN UTD - good options like Pogba and Rashford are overpriced, defense not intresting due to small attacking potential
CHELSEA - uncertainty over how the squad will look like under Lampard, and how the team will fuction without Eden, defense could be good Azpil and Luiz players to consider but 6.0 is steep
ARSENAL - god no, Lacazette or Kolasinac could be good once they get LIV and Spurs games out of the way but way overpriced players and all prone to rotation, Emery is the new Pep
SPURS - Son not playing, Eriksen and Alli overpriced, Lucas good option but only for first two gameweeks, only Kane is intresting but people seem to prefer Sterling as their second big gun due to 'August curse' and past season form

Also teams like BOU and EVE have amazing fixtures and historically good attacking returns and nicely priced players leaning more people to go that way, also Zaha repositioning hype is huge

    Seeing a lot of names online right now who will give me a good debate over this team;

    Pickford Button
    Trent, Robbo, Laporte, Digne, Diop
    Sterling, Richar, Moura, Brooks, Jorginho
    Firmino, King, Greenwood

Salah - Not good value for money
    Mane - AFCON
    Richar - Could be Siggy
Firmino - Could be Vardy or I can drop Sterling to KDB and upgrade to Kane
Moura - Maybe swap to Anderson

      Salah - good value.

Mane - AFCON, like the WC proved last year, has little to no effect.

Rich - should be set piece Siggy.

Firmino - Better LFC options out there. Serial underdeliverer.

Moura - good for the opener until Son is back. An xfer waiting to happen.

Salah - Too much in one place
Mane - Eventually it's going to take it's toll I reckon
Rich - Comes out the gates fast, I am hovering over Siggy
Firmino - First two fixtures hard to ignore and means not spending a fortune on Mane/Salah. Potential switch to Vardy or again can go to Kane if I downgrade Sterling to KDB
Moura - Will probably go to Anderson GW2

For attacking city assets, I think it's mostly between kdb and sterling. Kun and bilva other options but not that popular.
Sterling is great option and explosive. Going to have a good season again. But you know, there will be some odd rotations. Sane and mahrez won't sit on bench for ever for bilva and sterling. Plus bilva can play AM too. But I think I want kane more. He never misses a penalty and you can always trust him for armband. Home fixtures are tasty

And kdb case, he is quality, but sometimes may play deeper, sometimes being benched and injury prone. If you don't already have vardy, he seems lot better and more threatening and on pens

Afterall, I try my best to squeeze all 3 of kane, salah and sterling but if I have to chose one to ditch, it's sterling. You will never have kane at 11.0 again

You absolutely cannot trust Kane with the armband, I've been let down by him so many times in recent seasons I'm almost averse to ever having him back in my team at all on principal.

Didn't you trust Salah with the armband when he was gonna score Big every next week?
