Is Wan-Bissaka worth £5.5m in FPL after United move?

Aaron Wan-Bissaka‘s (£5.5m) price increase in Fantasy Premier League is as eye-catching as the £50m move to Manchester United that followed in late June.

In 2018/19, Wan-Bissaka was the much-heralded budget defensive gem, starting 35 of Crystal Palace’s 38 matches and returning 120 FPL points over the course of the campaign.

Wan-Bissaka – who was priced at £4.0m in Gameweek 1 of last season – was on the pitch for all 12 of the Eagles’ clean sheets, while he racked up 18 bonus points to compensate for a lack of attacking returns (no goals, three assists).

A year is a long time in FPL.

Championed for his value for money (26.1 points per million spent) last season, there has been something of a backlash against his price rise this summer.

Still, that hasn’t stopped over one in three FPL managers from drafting Wan-Bissaka into their initial squads.

Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) and Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) are the only two defenders who are proving more popular in FPL at the time of writing.

As we have said before, that 34.1% ownership can perhaps be explained by a number of factors – a nostalgia for his returns in 2018/19, a move to a ‘big six’ club and a higher rate of so-called casuals playing the game at this stage of the year.

We shouldn’t just ignore those FPL managers who have acquired him, though, as there is much to admire about Wan-Bissaka’s game.

Whether there is enough to warrant a price rise to £5.5m is something we’ll be exploring in the Members’ article below.

I think Wilson undergarments last season as he missed a lot of big chances. If he improves that then he will be much better than Fraser.

TAA has free kicks and corners too. 25 assists between them last season, even if they hit 50% of that they're well worth it.

While the attraction of two premium Liverpool defenders is obvious and the template demands Sterling and Salah, my current draft includes TAA but both Salah and Mane as my Pool trio, with KDB providing City representation in midfield.

      Ryan
      Taylor/Digne/TAA/Laporte
      Salah/KDB/Mane/Zaha
      King/Jiminez

Yes it feels a little scary to go without Sterling but it’s an easy switch to bring him in if I lose my nerve after GW1!

Anyway, good luck with whatever you go with.

    Tinkering, arrived at this:

    Heaton / (Steklenburg)
Van Dijk / Walker / Coleman / Ake / (Kelly)
Salah / De Bruyne / Siggurdsson / Maddison / (Dendonker)
    Firmino / Giroud / Ings

Ake has good fixture GW1, but will probably end up on the bench mostly
De Bruyne may now push forward a bit as Man City have just signed Rodri
Giroud pick was Arnoutavic until the "I want to go to China" thing started again - Batshuayi or Abraham not in list so assuming they'll be out on loan again

0.5 in the bank for when it all goes wrong in Gameweek 1 and a Wildcard is played early

Not many reliable captain choices other than Salah every week. Don't follow the last comment either - don't need 0.5 in bank if playing WC.

If you play Ake in GW1, who else will you bench?

Haha good good, on FPL surgery slack these days.

My current draft is this (if Gomez is the starting CB in pre season)
              Ederson
              TAA Robbo Gomez Digne Laporte
              Sterling Sigurdsson Zaha
              King Kane

              Subs: Button, Dendoncker, Stephens, Greenwood.

              How about you?

                Come back to ours mate!

Interesting one, that draft. Honestly I feel that at least one of Mane or Salah is important to have, but having that defence + Sterling and Kane is definitely appealing and interesting to consider. I am not keen on premium forwards, however.

I am currently considering two main alternatives:

                1)
                Ryan
                Coleman, Walker, TAA, VVD
                Fraser, Zaha, Siggy, Salah, Sterling
                King

                2)
                Ryan
                Coleman, Trippier, TAA, Walker
                Perez, Siggy, Mane, Salah, KDB
                King

In both cases, bench is fodder

It’s a different set-up to most, but it’s nice in it’s own way. Personally would prefer Salah and Trent, but probably hard to get both, if any in.

It seems like this year is more defensive heavy, which is what makes your team different as you’ve allocated your budget in the attack. There’s no guarantee that the defence will be where the points are, however I would
try get maybe one more defensive premium to allow for flexibility.

Maddison is a great option. I'm only holding off on getting him because I already have Vardy.

Brendan is an attacking manager and will set his team up to create chances. Maddison will be a key part of how they shape up this season.

I expect at least one of them to start, if not both. It’s definitely worth putting one in your draft, because even if they don’t start first game, they may be subbed on and they can still have an impact. Definitely worth considering.

Hopefully we'll get a good idea throughout the course of pre-season, but (as it stands) who do you reckon is most likely to start the first game of the season out of the following?

    Gomez
    Matip
    Lovren
    Stones
    Otamendi
    Zinchenko

If I go for a Liverpool option, I'll also get Laporte.
If I go for a City option, I'll also get VVD.
Rest of the defence is currently: TAA, Digne & Reid.

I know "wait for pre-season" is the obvious reply, but my memory of when they got their minutes last season is poor so a reminder of that and the implications would be great.

Lovren is far from starting, probably will be sold this window. The spot is arguably Matip’s to lose, was superb to finish the season but Gomez was also very good before his injury. Tough decision for Klopp.

For City, Stones should get the spot at CB before Otamendi. Zinchenko isn’t nailed, and now with another LB signed, it’s really anyone’s spot at the moment. Zinchenko started at LB towards the end of the season, however Mendy showed glimpses of his ability early in the season before his injury.

      Hope this helps!

If the doubt is between Gomez and Matip, I would surely go with Gomez, for two reasons.
        1) when he and Matip were both fit, Gomez has almost always played 90 mins. This happened in Gameweeks 1,2,3,4,5, 7,8,9,11,12,14; and he broke his leg in GW15. He was on the bench on 22 sept and he replaced VVD after 55 mins, with Matip playing the whole game (and scoring, also). From then on, he came from the bench on three occasions (GWs 35,36 and 38) for a total of 10 minutes played.
        2) he is not a better player than Matip, but he is a better mate for central defence for Van Dijk, who is 6 ft 4 in and not the faster of centrebacks (but maybe the strongest). Matip is taller than VVD and even slower. Gomes is 6 ft 2 in and clearly faster, both on the ball and without (he is a decent fb, in fact).

Brilliant stuff, thanks mate! Will be sure to watch Matip and Stones extra closely throughout pre-season. I'm sure you'll see most posting regarding the same thing again once the season gets nearer. 🙂

Matip looks good for GW1, he started the champions league final. Zinchenko also looks a solid starter for GW1. He started the FA cup final.

For those playing 4 or 5 at that back this season, thoughts on Christensen?

Will need to see what happens about Zouma but with Rudiger out injured and not expected back until maybe mid September, Christensen @ 5.0M and good fixtures after the United game looks quite tempting to me.

Obviously will see how pre-season plays out etc.

I know there are RMT's flying about everywhere but would appreciate a little feedback.

    Pope Button
    VVD TAA Digne Walker
    Brooks B Silva Salah Siggy
    King Kane

Burnley keeper situation to be monitored.
Think Liverpool will carry on where they left last season so doubling up on defence.
B Silva to make a mockery of his price tag.
Bournemouth double up to take advantage of fixtures.
Kane to do what Kane does best.

    Cheers

Why do you think B Silva will ‘make a mockery of his price tag’? Would love to get him but not sold on him yet.

Overall it’s a solid team, personally I’d prefer Robertson over VVD, but that’s definitely not a problem by having VVD.

Would he be used as someone who is genuinely an attacker, or will he be used to drop deep and set up the plays? Seen comments saying he is the ‘assist the assister’ type of player, and it doesn’t really fill me with confidence.

He’s a guaranteed starter but not necessarily in the front 3.

Sané could start the year and Bilva take the Dilva role. Pep needs a Dilva replacement and Foden is awhile off.

I don't see how any signing affects KDB. When healthy, he's as important to their team as most anyone (save Sterling and Kun).

He’s more a defensive player, so he will probably be back-up for Fernandinho and I’d assume eased into the Starting XI. It shouldn’t impact De Bruyne at all, KDB is one of the best midfielders in the world, assured starter.

Everyone plays the game differently in some way and my way of playing it, is to set my team up for GW1 only to try to ensure a good score, then hit the wildcard button and bring in players who are rising in price. I fully intend to do that again this season, but what’s different this time around, is that for the first time ever I honestly believe that the Bench Boost Chip is the way to go!

My plan: Mo Salah(C) and only “big hitter” in terms of price.
With two other Liverpool players, three Tottenham players, three Bournemouth players, three Everton players and three Watford players.

I really like the look of the drafts I’ve made using that template, and I really fancy my mix of £5.5m-£7m players to do well. Then set up my squad from GW2 with an extra week’s worth of info, no price drops and a few prices rises, as well as having a better idea of who the bandwagons and value bench fodder will be.

It won’t be for everyone (probably very few!) but it’s the way I intend to go right now.

It's an interesting approach Tippins, although it does seem a bit formulaic. Surely if you get of to a great start in GW1 then the players you already have are the ones showing form and who'll price rise? I'd hate to wildcard when my team has already started well.

In an ideal world all of my players would deliver, rise in price and I’d have the players everybody was scrambling for, then I would be able to hang onto my wildcard... but that hasn’t happened yet

No City players GW1... will build a squad GW2 so will definitely have City players in then. Usually have two rock solid Captain options, so will likely be Salah and Sterling or Salah and Aguero. Then I’ll pick the rest of my squad when I know more
