Pre-Season

Origi among the budget FPL forwards to monitor

With so many appealing premium options in Fantasy Premier League next season, the emergence of a playable budget forward would be a huge bonus.

Raul Jimenez was the Fantasy manager’s friend last year, returning 13 goals, ten assists and 31 bonus points having started the 2018/19 campaign priced at just £5.5m.

The Mexico international has predictably been handed a significant rise upon FPL’s relaunch for 2019/20 and will now set Fantasy bosses back £7.5m.

A cursory glance through the FPL price list suggests that we will struggle to find a ‘Jimenez’ among the sub-£6.0m forward options this time, although pre-season often throws up a wildcard from this price bracket that we had previously disregarded.

Big Six Back-Ups

Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri will be on standby to start in Gameweek 1

Perhaps the most eye-catching name among the 22 strikers currently available in the £4.5m-£5.5m grouping is Divock Origi (£5.5m).

The Belgian striker only played 367 minutes of Premier League football last season but was increasingly involved in Jurgen Klopp’s squads as the year progressed.

We may only be an injury to Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) or Sadio Mane (£11.5m) away from seeing Origi string together a succession of starts in the top flight, although Jurgen Klopp could very well bolster his attacking options over the summer following the release of Daniel Sturridge and sale of Danny Ings (£6.0m).

Origi was well down the pecking order at the start of 2018/19, with Sturridge and Xherdan Shaqiri (£6.5m) very much the preferred options when Klopp needed to hand breathers to one of his regular front three.

The Belgian striker featured in just three of Liverpool’s first 24 league matches, failing to make the matchday squad on 13 occasions.

However, Origi was the man Klopp frequently turned to in the season run-in: the former Lille striker deputising for Firmino from the start in Gameweeks 28, 29 and 38, as well as in the UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg against Barcelona.

Origi came off the bench in the final of that competition to score Liverpool’s decisive second goal.

Mane and Salah are currently on duty at the Africa Cup of Nations, a tournament that could have a significant say in their availability in Gameweek 1.

The competition final takes place exactly three weeks before the start of the 2019/20 season, leaving little time for the premium midfield duo to recover and return to Liverpool’s pre-season camp should Egypt and/or Senegal make it that far.

Both Salah and Mane started in Gameweek 1 last season but their countries had been eliminated in the group stage of the 2018 World Cup and the pair had more than six weeks to ready themselves for domestic action.

More pertinently, Dejan Lovren and Jordan Henderson (both £5.5m), who made it to the final weekend of the World Cup with their respective countries, were handed three weeks off after their exertions in Russia and failed to start on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

Origi, then, may be a short-term budget punt for Gameweek 1 should Salah and Mane be handled carefully by Klopp – though that is a decision that will likely have to be made very shortly before the season kicks off in early August.

Beyond that, Origi will be a ‘sleeper’ that could come in handy should any injury befall Salah, Mane or Firmino.

The other three FPL forwards representing a ‘big six’ club in this list are Eddie Nketiah, Mason Greenwood and Vincent Janssen (all £4.5m).

The budget trio managed just one league start between them last season and very much merit their cut-price tags, although Greenwood will be one to monitor given how impressed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was with the young United striker after his debut in Gameweek 38:

Mason Greenwood was brilliant, he was our best player by a mile and that says a lot about the kid. He came into the team with a lack of confidence and you can see that has take a total. Not surprised by his performance, we know he is capable of that.

Options from the Promoted Clubs

David McGoldrick missed only one league game last season

The arrival of Josip Drmic (£5.5m) could put pressure on Teemu Pukki (£6.5m) at Norwich City but the Finn is still expected to be Daniel Farke’s preferred option in Gameweek 1, with Drmic’s career needing a serious kickstart following an injury-ravaged few years.

You can read more about the Swiss international’s credentials in our Scout Report.

Dennis Srbeny (£5.5m) may not even be at Carrow Road come August but should he still be on the books, he won’t be of much interest to Fantasy managers: the German striker failed to start a single game last season and made only two substitute appearances in Norwich’s final 19 fixtures.

Jonathan Kodjia (£5.5m) is expected to be a backup option at Villa, meanwhile, with Wesley Moraes (£6.0m) having been bought from Club Brugge.

Kodjia started only five of Villa’s final 23 league and play-off fixtures and was mostly an impact substitute, featuring on the left flank as much as he did up top last season.

David McGoldrick (£5.5m) is perhaps one of the more likelier starters among the 22 players featured in this article.

McGoldrick played in all but one of Sheffield United’s 46 Championship fixtures (starting 36 of them) and scored more goals (15) than he has ever managed in a single season in the second tier.

Starting all but one match between Gameweeks 9 and 28, McGoldrick was one of the first names on the teamsheet for much of the season although did face bench duty on five occasions after Gary Madine and Scott Hogan’s loan captures in January.

Only four Championship players registered more shots than McGoldrick, with the former Ipswich Town forward also expected to be on penalties for the Blades in 2019/20 after his three successes from the spot last season.

The Rest

Shane Long scored four goals in the final six Gameweeks of 2018/19

There are slim pickings elsewhere.

Xande Silva and Connor Wickham (both £4.5m) failed to make a single start between them in 2018/19 and are some way down the pecking order at West Ham and Palace, although Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m) has handed in a transfer request in recent days and looks set for a summer exit.

Matej Vydra (£5.5m) hasn’t made one Premier League start in 2019, meanwhile, as he continues to play second fiddle to Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes (both £6.5m).

Joselu (£5.0m) is reportedly nearing the exit door at Newcastle but the exodus of players and manager, plus the failure to so far snap up Salomon Rondon on a permanent deal, could pave a way for Yoshinori Muto (£5.5m) to feature with more regularity in 2019/20.

Newcastle’s dismal opening run of fixtures and the Japan international’s forgettable debut season (one goal, no assists) will mean Fantasy interest is likely to be very limited, however.

There are several budget strikers whose first-team opportunities may hinge on injuries to their teammates.

Isaac Success (£5.0m) was very much fourth-choice forward by the season’s end at Watford and started just one league match in 2019.

Dominic Solanke (£5.5m), Lys Mousset (£5.0m) and Sam Surridge (£4.5m) are reliant on a loss of form or fitness from Josh King (£6.5m) and Callum Wilson (£8.0m), with even an ‘out of position’ David Brooks (£6.5m) generally preferred to this trio when the first-choice strike pair were sidelined last season.

Solanke, Mousset and Surridge made only three starts between them in 2018/19.

Further along the south coast, Shane Long (£5.0m), Michael Obafemi (£5.0m) and Sam Gallagher (£4.5m) face a fight for first-team minutes following the summer captures of Che Adams and Danny Ings (both £6.0m).

Nathan Redmond (£6.5m), meanwhile, was frequently deployed ‘out of position’ up front after Ralph Hasenhuttl’s arrival midway through last season.

Long saw more minutes and gained more FPL points in 2018/19 than any forward now in the sub-£6.0m bracket.

The Irish forward started 12 league matches last season, including five of Southampton’s last seven, and scored on five occasions.

Hasenhuttl had positive words to say about Long in the season run-in although the arrival of Adams, plus the fact that the Irish striker turns 33 midway through next season, may well see him again become a peripheral figure at St. Mary’s.

It will be interesting to see if Graham Potter can transform Brighton into a more attractive side over the summer, given his reputation for playing attacking football at Swansea and Ostersunds.

Pre-season will certainly be an intriguing watch, given that the Seagulls have one of the best opening runs of fixtures in the first six Gameweeks of 2019/20.

With Glenn Murray (£6.0m) turning 36 in September, budget forwards Jurgen Locadia (£5.5m) – more often used on the flank by Chris Hughton – and Florin Andone (£5.0m) will be hoping for more of a look-in under their new boss.

Potter seems likely to add to his striking options over the summer, though, which could swiftly dash any hopes on that front.

Missing the point Christina. A 5.5 striker is not a season keeper. There's a chance one, two or three of Salah, Mane and Firmino will be rested GW1-2.

I suppose the problem is that you probably wouldn't start anyone 5.0-5.5, so why spend the extra money? There might be reasons but it's very much an issue.

I've seen people with Kodija and Long, thinking they'll play. So it's useful for many on FFS to get a full understanding of the pecking order at some of these clubs.

And if Firmino does get injured, Origi could be a major player in FPL this season.

Is it worth having a nailed 4.5 defender on the bench
    Or
A 4.0 and upgrade one of Coleman to Digne or vvd to Robbo?

    Defence currently is
    Ederson
TAA vvd Coleman (el Mohamady, kelly)

Depends how long you want to hold your first wildcard for.

Stronger bench = more resilient squad to injuries and difficult fixtures

Weaker bench = better starting 11 (on paper)

Impossible to say which approach is better. I am on a weak bench at the moment and hoping preseason kicks up a few cheap options. Last season has spoilt me.

I’m not sure whether he pace is permanently gone now as he’s just older, or whether it could come back if he got into better shape...

But yeah if he showed signs of form he’d be a ridiculous bargain. Personally I think he’s finished though

LB spot situation even more convuluted with Angelino signing. Now Zinky, Mendy and Angelino are fighting for that LB berth. Tough.

451 is tempting but you are paying .5 more for nearly definite non starters compared to 4.0 defenders ( tbf not many starters in that department either, plus if that one striker does not start you can only field 10 due to formation rules.

Think the triple premium weakens your midfield too much. You can't play Kante, or Doucoure really for that matter.

If you own Digne, makes sense to NOT go Pickford and jist get Lloris at the same price, right? For set and forget.

Why? You are getting Digne for 2 reasons clean sheets and potential attacking returns..the major part , the clean sheets applies to Pickford as well..I'd rather double than hedge with Everton's opening fixtures

Who will get the least clean sheets?
          Chelsea ManU Spurs Everton
All keepers same price so why Pickford?
Digne is a totally different situation.

That’s in most of my drafts. I’m starting to get tempted by whichever of Heaton or Pope nails the preseason slot. Even Joe Hart made plenty of saves and a better cs record seems reasonable. Heaton and Pope could work too - prefer that to the generic Ryan Button even for 0.5 more

First draft I've settled on after some playing with kun/sterling debates.

    Ryan/Button
    Robbo/TAA/Digne/XXX/Diop
    Salah/Sterling/Siggy/Fraser/Townsend
    King/Wickham/Greenwood

Given the lack of good 4.5 options, a lot of people seem to be looking towards Ederson or Alisson for their goalkeeper spot. However for those looking for a premium keeper, I think Lloris looks a viable alternative:

    - One would expect Spurs to improve their home defensive record with their move to the new stadium. In their five PL matches at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium they conceded an average xGA of 0.968. In their other 9 matches at home to top 6 teams they conceded an average xGA of 1.24.

    - New signing Ndombele should help improve Spurs defence as well. He averaged more tackles per game than any other Spurs midfielder last season. His ability on the ball should also help the team with regards to ball retention and sustaining attacks.

    - Lloris had the equal second highest PPG for regularly starting goalkeepers last season (4.4) and also the second highest save percentage (75.2%). With Alisson ranking highest in both.

    - He's 0.5 cheaper than Alisson and Ederson.

    - Selecting him woul allow you to utilise your 3 Liverpool and Man City slots on outfield players.

That's why I wanted to highlight his save percentage as well. In my opinion, save percentage is probably the best way to predict future points for goalkeepers. Goalkeeper points are very difficult to predict because of things like penalties, but those who have a consistently high save percentage tend to offer some sort of reliability.

          Agreed

I’m with you generally. I think Spurs are the top 6 side most likely to improve cs record AND get significant cs numbers. They have been home titans under Poch before after all.

Very sensible and good advice. I just think you want to lock yourself into the super-premium clean sheets (Liverpool / City) or you save loads of money and go for someone like Heaton who could be a bargain this year.

I'm backing Burnley to be much better at the back without European commitments etc.

Thank you, and I agree. Heaton would definitely be my pick of the 4.5s as it stands, although I'm hoping Pope becomes first choice as I think he's a better keeper.

I'm thinking along the same lines. Thinking both Ederson and Alisson will regress about 10 points - one or two less cs, and no assist for Ederson. OFc they could get a penalty save. Expecting 145-150 points for Pickford, Lloris and Kepa this season, so they should match them in value. Ofc, if no nailed-on MCI defender except Laporte emerges, then might as well go Ederson.
Then there's ofc Pope or Heaton, who could very well be this years Fabianski. Easy downgrade in that case.

That's definitely true, although the nice home fixtures probably offset that a little bit. Besides, I don't tend to hold too much weight to fixtures when it comes to goalkeepers anyway.

That’s where you think save points. City away could be a 3 pointer easily - as pointed out he’s right up there in saves. I’m hoping for a premium Fab - pay the extra mill for added cs at home and it could work.

Both Lloris and Pickford should regress in penalty saves, but I simply can't overlook Everton's run of fixtures, Im betting on more than average cs's for Toffee's.

              Fair dos

I’m sceptical of fixture runs for mid ranked sides. Everton did poorly or averagely in the equivalent fixtures last time. I’m not seeing them becoming cs monsters - more likely I believe is that they’ll do much the same next season but have a more even spread.

Could be wrong of course! I’m hedging with one defender almost certainly. In my big at the back system I’m looking for patience and holding until about week ten when cs and midterm value should even out. If I double more than Liverpool I’d probably be blown off course. I don’t want to confound the back 6 gamble with another double up gamble.

Where's the sense in risking injury to either of them? There were stats last year pointing to injuries to world cup stars not given enough time off (KDB being one).

I don't see both being rested. If Senegal don't get to the final, I reckon Mane will still play but Salah will unlikely start the first game if Egypt do get to the final. And if Origi does start well, it gives Klopp time to bed them back in - could even rest Mane & Salah simultaneously for the easier fixtures as that way at least one of them plays.

A front three of Salah/Mane, Firmino, Origi is hardly poor.

And if that 4-0 includes a VVD goal, and a assist each for TAA & Robbo, Salah/Mane would need to go a long way to match those scores.

Guessing game really, I'd just rather plump for greater security of a clean sheet and risk the lottery of attacking returns - especially from a lethargic Salah/mane if they come back too early.

Fair point although KDB was a bit injury prone last season and I'd be nowhere near Sterling so Bilva seemed a good cheap alternative. Spreading the points out would mean pretty much captaining Salah every week but with Hazard gone there are less obvious captain options anyway. Realistically you're looking at one of: Salah, Aguero, Kane, Sterling each week (with maybe Mane, Auba or a left field option coming into play). There is definitely a bit of a lack of top end premiums so far this season.

I doubt Origi will be a popular pick.
Each of the three Pool spots are very precious and you wouldn't miss out on a Salah, Rob, TAA or VVD to have a cheap Origi that may play now or then or come on as a sub. I think those cheap punts should come from teams you never want to own other 3 players of. And Origi is just not good enough to become a regular starter even if Firmino or someone gets injured.

I've been waiting a while for this one - Frank Lampard is now confirmed as the new manager for Chelsea.

At Derby, Lampard liked his team to play with a lot of movement and quick wingers forcing space to open up in the final third. Defensively, Lampard liked to deploy a high press with a defensive mid always sat behind the ball to offer protection against counter attacks.

If you are interested in a good detailed read about his tactics last season, have a read of this:

Would be too scared to say extremely likely myself, given the dependence on Hazard that we had, but I do expect it.

Hinges on whether the team all click now

I think it's the right appointment. Chelsea has become plastic over the years and Lampard could bring a bit of passion back.

He's a fiercely intelligent man, who's worked under great managers, and has a bucket load of experience playing at the highest level. I have no doubt he'll become a great manager one day.

I've got my eye on Alonso.

It's definitely felt like the team has been made up of mercenaries playing for their next paycheck rather than the shirt they wear, so I agree that Lampard might be a needed change. The big thing for me is that he's given time and he's not expected to change the face of football in one season - feel we desperately need some stability now.

If we switch to a back 5, which is unlikely but possible, I'd be very interested. Otherwise, Emerson will always worry me - he had a great performance Vs Derby last season, not sure if that will come into Frank's thinking

5 at the back definitely fits our current squad.

I really like Pulisic as an option.

Excited with Lamps as a Chelsea fan.

I really hope he improves that goal / assist record - could be a great player. CHO at 1.5m less though...

If CHO is fit then he will be in.

Think him and Pulisic should be first choice.

Given he should have a bit the Chelsea resilience of past seasons in his DNA, I'm hoping their defensive assets can re-emerge as good value picks.

Hoping we get a budget option emerge, maybe Zouma getting priced low and then securing a starting spot. Did like the look of Luiz's stats though...

I expect Frank to restore Kante to his DM position. Can't see where Jorginho would fit - he was bought purely because he's Sarri's man.

Kante back to where he was makes me more confident in picking a defender. Also Hazard out may make the left more solid!

Agree with this. Chelsea defence always does well and with kante back in position will only make them better.

Back to where he was is alongside a ball playing mid, not behind really. When Kante played as the CDM in a midfield 3, back right at the start of Conte's reign, he was good but not amazing. Didn't take long for Conte to switch to a 3-4-3 from there.

That being said, Kante is comparable to Huddletone in Frank's Derby team, though they didn't really have a Jorginho equivalent at their disposal. Waiting for preseason 🙂

Totally agree. I expect Jorginho to get benched pretty often... and Willian to take the pens.

Personally, I don't think it'll end well but I'd like to be proved wrong. Derby finished 21st in the Championship for xG, somehow finishing 6th. We beat them 4-0 at home, 3-0 away and 2-1 in the Play-Off final - in those games they offered very little. But, I do like Lampard and would like to see him do well. His best bet, IMO, would be to move to a 4-2-3-1 with Kante and Kovacic in the double pivot.

Yep - I spent a while looking through some of the Championship stats, and Derby do not come out pretty, for example:

I do feel they underperformed over the season, especially with the players at his disposal. But, you never know, something might click at Chelsea. Can't wait to see how he lines them up - Willian on his preferred left side could be gold at 7.

I’m looking at either Luiz/Azpi to be solid value from the start.

Willian interests me a lot if I end up with a 7.0 hole in midfield and likewise Giroud up top but I doubt I’d start any mid or forward.

Longer term there’s CHO who could well be a bolster at 6 but Achilles means he’s a wait even when he’s fit

Fully expect both to be first choice. Both of themselves, plus the forward, could be excellent value options over the course of this season.

I don't think overall Chelsea will have that much success under Frank, due to the embargo and the transition the squad is in - that isn't his fault - however I think it was the right move for both parties. Realistically if he doesn't succeed then there are plenty of contributing factors and his reputation wont be greatly affected.

Frank appears to like 4-3-3, with a holding role ie Kante is ideal, if Alonso can nail down his left back slot he could be massive this year. So many unknowns with Hudson Odoi and RLC injured - if fit I would have expected both to be starters, 6.0 for Hudson Odoi could be massive if he stays also.

Upfront, Giroud is a target man so whoever ends up as that no10 will flourish - similarly with Tammy up top the in the hole player will be the one I look at - literally could be anyone at this stage!

Thoughts on going no city defenders to start with ?

Wouldn’t be surprised at all if they conceded first 3 GW’s

I don’t tend to chase clean sheets in the first quarter of the season as the teams have changed and there is a certain amount of baggage that comes with that. Players take a little time to adapt to these changes and work out the new look opposing teams. Subsequently clean sheets are harder to come by IMO. So yes, City could easily slip one or two and you are left with an expensive defender.

If this theory is blown out of the water, Ive got Ederson just in case!

Better to look for attacking defenders at this stage.

I don't think they are essential at the moment. If Maguire moved he be straight in my team though.
