Pre-Season

Lampard looks to youth after Chelsea appointment

Frank Lampard’s appointment as Chelsea head coach may be to the advantage of the club’s academy products and perhaps Fantasy managers too.

With Chelsea currently hampered by a two-window transfer ban (subject to appeal), the Blues always looked as if they would have to turn to youth this season to flesh out their squad.

Eden Hazard has already departed for the Bernabeu, while peripheral squad players such as Gary Cahill have also exited the club.

The appointment of Lampard, who worked with Chelsea loanees Fikayo Tomori and Mason Mount at Derby County last season, would seem to further the chances of some of the Blues’ hitherto overlooked starlets having a breakthrough year at Stamford Bridge.

Players such as Mount, Tomori and Tammy Abraham are not yet priced up in FPL but given that not a single senior Chelsea player costs more than £7.5m at present, there could be potential Fantasy bargains to be had once Lampard gets his feet under the door.

Speaking at his first press conference after his unveiling, Lampard said of Mount and Tomori:

They were great for me last year, both of them. They come back now with a very clean slate, as does every player – young, old, been on loan, at the club, whatever. The same for Tammy Abraham.

We’ve got young players at a really good age that have the talent, in their own way, can be huge players for this club. Part of my job will be to develop the great young players we have here.

Given the size of Chelsea’s squad, however, Lampard did add that some of the club’s rookies would have to leave on a temporary basis again:

We have a big squad, not everyone will be able to stay. For the development of certain individuals, the path will be chosen – whether it’s with us or on loan. The loan system has worked very well. That’s the next month’s assessment.

The former Chelsea midfielder was quick to stress that he won’t be jettisoning all of his senior players in favour of youth:

On one hand, trying to develop young players, I think that’s really important, but at the same time, I want to work with the experienced players. I want players that, whether you’re 18 years of age or 32 years of age, you feel like Chelsea’s your club.

If we talk about losing Eden Hazard, yes we can understand that. But at the same time, we also have a very strong squad of players and I don’t want to talk down this squad because there is huge talent there. A team that managed to come third last year in the Premier League and managed to win the Europa League. We haven’t been decimated, we haven’t lost players from everywhere, we still have a very strong squad.

One household name that was mentioned was N’Golo Kante (£5.0m), who was repeatedly played to the right of Jorginho (£5.0m) in a central midfield three in 2018/19 – something that didn’t endear Maurizio Sarri to the Chelsea faithful.

Asked whether he knew where Kante’s best position was, Lampard said:

Yeah I do, thankfully [laughs]. I’m not going to sit here and talk about how we’re going to look next season because we start pre-season tomorrow.

I’ve said it before, Kante is one of the greatest midfield players in the world, in the last few years, his performances have been outstanding. My job will be to find the best position to get the best out of him.

I know the qualities, the attributes he has.

We’ll have a full Scout Report on Lampard and his year at Derby County in the days to come.

In the meantime, let us point you in direction of two Hot Topics from Rotation’s Alter Ego and AK for further discussion and analysis of the new Chelsea boss.

    Question:

    Which would you go for:
    a. Kane / Kodija / King
    b. Vardy / Jiminez / King

likely to be jumping between 442 and 433 for first 8 games or so.

    Cheers

    In a 3-4-3 would you rather have a 4.0 defender and a 5.0 mid or both 4.5?

All other things being equal I would avoid a 4.0 as it’s trickier to get rid. But everything else isn’t equal so I have Kelly.

Kelly is the only 4.0 I’m considering but it just feels wrong. There’s no standout 4.5 mid at all though.

I've gone with two 4m defenders and one 5m

      rather than

      two 4.5m and one 4m

does that make sense? Anyway, winging it and hoping we get 2 mil defs

    Alisson 4.0

    14 assists between them

How's this looking? (Apart from the light bench)

    Ryan (Button)
    TAA, VVD, Walker, Mendy, Coleman
    Salah, Sterling, Siggy (Dendonker, Romeu)

    Wilson, King (Greenwood)

Not worried about having flexibility for bringing in premium forwards. With Mané, Salah, Sterling & potentially De Bruyne to choose from in midfield, Aguero potentially facing rotation with Jesus, Kane looking shattered & Auba in an Arsenal team that I just can't see being consistant... I can't see there being a point where a premium forward is an absolute must. Especially where we have the option of rotating Jota, King and Deulofeu in and out of our squads all season long.

In that case in comes down to Sterling and a 6.0-6.5 striker, or Aguero and a 6.0-6.5 mid. I think I prefer the latter, weirdly Jesus being given the #9 shirt is playing on my mind.

Sterling over Aguero for me - I would rather see if DCL, Jota, King, etc.. can provide some value up top as opposed to the mid options at that price.

Jorginho and Wesley is a no from me. Wesley is more of a big ball holder and would bring players into play so I don’t think he has a lot offer especially as a second striker. Jorginho plays to deep for me

I'm not sure. KDB is a ~200 points a season player. Sterling is a ~230 points a season player. If you have Salah, and plan to captain him in all but the hardest fixtures, I think KDB is better value

Deulofeu owners, why do you prefer him over Deeney?

    • Deeney is on penalties.
    • Deulofeu was subbed off a lot more than Deeney last season.
    • Deulofeu will be moved out wide or benched when a natural stiker like Gray plays alongside Deeney.
    • Deulofeu would've scored around 19 less points if he was listed as a forward last season.

Deulofeu is more of a goal threat than Deeney is, even when taking into account the points you stated.

my tinkering thus far has landed on a fairly unexciting team - low risk in terms of nailed-ness and good fixtures
the starred players I see as season keepers barring injury

    Brighton*
    TAA* VVD* Walker* Digne Coleman
    Salah* Sterling* Siggy Bilva 4.5
    King 4.5 4.5

game plan is to jump on midfield bandwagons in the 6-7m range once they emerge (of course you could just tell us Lamps) and whomever the outstanding cheap defender happens to be, to fund striker upgrades going into autumn/winter

I'd be tempted to go Schmeichel > Ryan and VVD > TAA. I fancy TAA to be the top scoring defender in the game this season

You're going to need a 0.5 downgrade somewhere probably, unlikely to be any starting 4.0 defenders or 4.5 forwards come the start of the season. Team looks good otherwise though 🙂

DEF: TAA, Gomez, Walker, digne, 4.0
MID: mane, sterling, Perez, kdb, siggy
    FOR: king, 4.5, 4.5

    A: 5.5 city gamble+willian
    B: 5.5 city gamble+Antonio

      C, most nailed players

My only issue with the 451 formation is that your striker HAS to play...a small injury or benching and you (most likely) can't make use of auto subs with two 4.5 strikers

I know this has probably been done already but having Lampard back as a Chelsea fan it's hard not to get sentimental, He will at least give a kick up the whazzo to all those who have been gliding along. Getting my Reading friendly tickets tm!

But you lot don't care about that! What will happen in FF terms? Well, If you look at our strikers then we have 3 forwards (4 if Morata is called back) who are essentially penalty box strikers. So the wingers and attacking midfielders will be the closest to set up and react to penalty box opportunities. Pulisic/CHO are crosers and dribblers who follow in, Pedro/Willian are more cut inside and play off the forward and shoot players so i think the advantage lies with the first duo. The AMC position should be a shoot out between RLC and Barkley. RLC scored 6 PL goals to Barkleys 3 in 300 less minutes last season so i beleive Barkley has until RLC is fit to find his mojo. I will only be looking at 2 players out of those (Unless Barkley finds another level). Pulisic to start and RLC when fit. 7.5 and 6.5 could be a steal for players who can score/assist with regularity.

Tldr; Pulisic/Cho & RLC are the players to watch out for.

    May your arrows be green.

He will do that for sure. It remains to be seen how he will perform especially with CL to deal with as well. There is no one better at Chelsea to advise and coach RLC on that position. He could easily get 10-15 goals if he can stay fit.

Yep we were excited when we signed Lampard. He did alright.

Different kettle of fish in the PL mind, can’t see a top 4 qualification. Results are volatile with young players irrespective of how good they are as we saw during Q1. The margins are smaller.

Agreed there were times when you had mini losing streaks last season if i remember, like 4/5 games on the bounce. Will be interesting to see how he handles it should that happen this season.

I think most reasonable fans will take a Europa league place with what he has inherited and has to work with. Then again Arsenal and Spurs managed to throw away 3rd last season, we only won 1 of out last 5 games and scrapped in with 3 draws!
