Salah’s FPL appeal boosted by early AFCON exit for Egypt

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) made a much earlier-than-anticipated exit from the Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday evening after Egypt were defeated 1-0 by South Africa.

The shock result means that Salah and his country have bowed out of the tournament over two weeks before it is due to finish.

Bafana Bafana’s victory could have repercussions in Fantasy Premier League, with Salah’s summer international obligations coming to an end before those of teammates Sadio Mane (£11.5m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.5m).

With the Africa Cup of Nations final taking place exactly three weeks before Gameweek 1 kicks off, we had previously expressed concern that Salah and/or Mane could be doubts for the 2019/20 curtain-raiser between Liverpool and Norwich City in August.

Last year, Dejan Lovren (£5.5m) and Jordan Henderson (£5.5m) were handed three weeks off after their exertions with Croatia and England at the World Cup.

Klopp is, indeed, expected to give Firmino and Alisson (£6.0m) the same amount of time to recover after their run to the final in the Copa America.

Salah’s premature departure from the Africa Cup of Nations, however, has effectively killed any concern that he won’t be ready for Gameweek 1 – barring any further injuries, of course.

Egypt 0-1 South Africa

Saturday’s result was an unanticipated outcome: Egypt were not only the host nation of the competition but also the pre-tournament favourites with the bookmakers and made it to the final in 2017.

Egypt went into the weekend with a 100% record in this year’s tournament, while South Africa had lost two of their three group matches and only qualified for the knockout stages as one of the best third-place teams.

Salah had been a doubt for this last-16 tie with a cold but recovered to line up, as he so often does, on the right flank.

The Liverpool winger looked below-par and didn’t have much influence on proceedings, however, with South Africa full-back Sifiso Hlanti proving more than a match for the premium FPL midfielder.

Salah started brightly and fizzed an early effort wide via a deflection but struggled to make an impression beyond that, save for one superb pass through to Mahmoud Trezeguet that the Egypt attacker should have converted.

Trezeguet had missed another chance that Salah had teed up earlier in the game, while the Liverpool man himself had two other blocked shots and drilled wide from a long-range free-kick.

Ahmed El Mohamady (£4.5m) and Mohamed Elneny (£4.5m) both started the game for Egypt, with the Aston Villa right-back completing the game and Elneny substituted with seven minutes to go.

Both of those two players will also now return to their respective Premier League clubs.

For what it’s worth, Percy Tau had an excellent match – the Brighton and Hove Albion attacker has not been able to get a work permit since his move to the Amex but a strong showing from South Africa this summer could change all that.

Uganda 0-1 Senegal

While Salah’s Africa Cup of Nations has come to an end, Mane and Senegal have progressed to the tournament quarter-finals after edging past Uganda on Friday.

It will be interesting to see just how far Mane goes with the Lions of Teranga, given the concerns we outlined above about Liverpool assets being handed three-week breaks following their international efforts this summer.

Senegal next face Benin on Wednesday, with their opponents being one of the lowest-ranked teams left in the competition.

Mane’s nation, meanwhile, are now as short as 8/5 with some bookmakers to win the tournament following Egypt’s exit.

The former Southampton winger was again in the thick of the action, scoring his side’s winner after 15 minutes before missing from the spot for the second time in this tournament.

Mane broke the deadlock when racing through to finish M’Baye Niang’s pass but, having missed from 12 yards against Kenya last week, then saw a second-half spot-kick saved after he himself was felled by opposition goalkeeper Denis Onyango.

Mane and Senegal can occasionally look dangerous going forward but this was a match low on goalscoring opportunities, with Senegal having just five shots in total.

The premium FPL midfielder was again deployed on the left wing and lasted the whole 90 minutes.

Budget midfield pair Cheikhou Kouyate and Idrissa Gana Gueye (both £5.0m) also played the full game.

Morocco 1-1 Benin (1-4 Penalties)
Nigeria 3-2 Cameroon

Wolves’ Romain Saiss (£4.5m) played the full 120 minutes as Morocco bowed out of the Africa Cup of Nations after a penalty shootout defeat on Friday.

Saiss impressed in defence as Morocco bossed the possession and chances but his country were unable to break down a stubborn Benin side who triumphed on penalties after playing the last 25 minutes of extra-time with only ten men.

Alex Iwobi (£6.0m) was on the scoresheet in the other round-of-16 tie to take place on Sunday as Nigeria edged past defending champions Cameroon in a five-goal thriller.

The lively Arsenal winger scored the game’s winner on 66 minutes, charging through to finish low past Andre Onana after being slipped through by Odion Ighalo.

Wilfred Ndidi (£5.0m) played the whole 90 minutes in midfield while Brighton’s Leon Balogun (£4.5m) replaced Iwobi in stoppage time.

We’ll bring you up to speed on the other Africa Cup of Nations games and the finals of the Copa America and Gold Cup in the coming days, as well as revealing the latest on Alexis Sanchez‘s (£7.0m) injury after the Manchester United winger was substituted in his country’s 2-1 defeat to Argentina on Saturday.

You're rank can get a beating if pool wins 4/5-1 with Mo/Mane hattrick though 😕
I prefer Mo as a great © option alongside Raz & and I'd bin Kane for the ££.

I like the punt on Wood - had him in my plans from the end of last season until the other day and I'm bound to somehow regret sacrificing him for Laporte.

Trossard is an interesting pick; what does he offer?

Wickham won't get minutes so that's the obvious problem with the starting eleven - maybe sacrifice Vardy to allow an upgrade there.

The strengths are clearly found in defence and midfield but your attack looks really weak, You could get in better attacking prospects without having to spend massively.

Go with 3 BOU for first 2 GWs then switch to Leicester and Chelsea (if they perform well) or just start with LEI and CHE based on pre-season?

Can I throw Rashford out there.

Not seen him any teams. Granted Utd are somewhat of a shambles at present but more so defensively, I can't see them not scoring goals.

With Lukaku likely heading out & a new contract it seems he might be nailed first choice.

I really want Martial as our main striker. Berbatov recently said that he creams over Martial's ability and thinks he's going to be a phenomenal player.

With Martial's high chance creation and finishing ability in the centre, Rashford and James' pace on the wings should cause teams problems.

He just needs to sort out his attitude. And given the training clips I've seen so far, he looks a lot better. He's smiling and training hard.

          Yeah.
His attitude is a huge problem. But by far best finisher in United squad.
I'm not sure this will happen though as United recently gave Rashford new contract plus he's OGS's boy.
Can be better utilization of both player's skills imo

Martial is a superior dribbler and I feel his talents would not be well used as a striker. Utd's biggest problem is how slowly they pass and move with the ball. The midfield is too stagnant and there is no game plan on how to break an opposition defence. They were a far better team when they were pressing high up the pitch. All that hunger and drive has gone missing especially after Herrera got injured. Also, need ball playing centre backs that can also marshall a defence well. Don't think either Smalling or Jones can do that.

Not a fan of rotating keepers and the options are not really there this season anyway imo. Prefer set and forget and also would prefer to spend that extra 0.5 than go Ryan/Button if I'm honest (which is the only cheaper pairing really).

You could set and forget on a first choice 4.5?

Rotating GKs is a no-no for me too, you just end up inevitably missing any haul.

It's really whether you want to stick with a cheap GK and hopefully build via save points & fewer CS or go for a premium and know it's ~160-170 for the season.

if we get clarity on Heaton/Pope it could be a good one to go with...Ederson seems a very solid pick but that 1.5 can do a lot elsewhere also (the other huge factor is that I want City defence).

      4.5-4.0
      Robbo - Laporte - Digne - Ake - Holebas
      Sterling - Pérez - Salah
      King - Kane

      bench = 3x4.5

I think that’s maybe the best stab I’ve done at a team with Kane, Salah and Sterling, but even then I don’t think I’m elated with it. Defence not strong enough.

Defensively very solid aside the risky Zinch, but I'm sure you're aware of the risk there.

For me, Fraser & Wilson is a little much to spend on a double Bournemouth attack. At a minimum I'd downgrade Wilson to King, but ideally I'd ditch one of them completely.

De Bruyne a good pick imo; he's got a spot in my draft.

Maddison & DCL could perhaps be upgraded with the money from a Wilson downgrade (to Siggy & a 6.5m forward, perhaps).

Zinchenko will not play much. In fact, I doubt that he's gonna be 2nd choice anymore now that they've signed Angelino back. If you keep him in GW 1, you might risk a price fall which will not bode well for team value. I think you've overspent on defence and you could look at upgrading your 2 forwards.

Another major factor to consider here is the signing of Ndombele. I think he will add real drive and steel to that midfield. He's an excellent dribbler and possesses great long range passing. Those diagonal balls would benefit Kane and Son greatly.

I would consider losing a city defender - if (when?) one of Sterling or Aguero starts getting big back to back scores, your only route to getting one of them would be by selling KDB. Otherwise you’d be making that extra defensive transfer to make room. Looks a good team tho

An injury prone player is always a highly risky choice. More often than not, he's bound to fail. He needs to play at a good level for a while before actually considering him. I made a mistake of buying him last season just for the double gameweeks.

Only the relegated sides scored less than Brighton. I wouldn't want an attacking player from them unless they changed drastically.
Compare Brightons 35 goals to Bournmouth's 56 and you see why people go for Fraser and Brooks.

Been sat on this draft for a while now so time to share.
The more criticism the better, especially if you can suggest alternatives!

    Ryan, (Button).
    TAA, Matip, Laporte, Digne, (Reid).
    Salah, Sterling, KDB, Siggy, Norwood.
    King, (Greenwood), (Xande Silva).

Matip is a waste of pool spot imho.
Gomez if starts is a better prospect.
I'd downgrade KDB/siggy to stretch to Robbo/vvd for assured starting spot benefit.

Matip can become Gomez dependant on pre-season, but aware of the risk there. Very tempting - feel whoever i get rid of will punish me though, haha.

Your 2 city mids cover LaPorte cleanie point's yet I'd personally get rid of Sterling for Bilva. Feel your team needs a premium striker like Kun/Kane.

mmm new season with turning over a fresh leaf and all that, but it may be worth punting on a SUFC attacker bou CPA LEI is actually an excellent start and McGoldrick for example is a very good punt and enabler when we're all struggling for attackers in the 5-6.5 range

I don't mind the idea Smith at all. Decent first 10 games, has been known to get the odd assist, could get 2/3 clean sheets. Not gonna get much more at that price point, and he's only an enabler in that team.

  16. Ser Davos
    • 8 Years
    4 years, 9 months ago

    Just thinking regarding City defence...

They really should have had a lot more clean sheets I feel. They obtained 20, but they'd concede sloppy scrappy goals at home to Hudders and Newc before tightening as necessary. Really there's only Ederson and Laporte, the rest will get rotated, but the likes of Walker, Zinchenko and Stones will find their way in teams so it'll be wise to cover that off with a nailed one. Wasn't Otamendi nailed on in 17-18.

Ederson is nailed in for me despite the allure of Heaton and Henderson. Yes, takes up a City spot, but he's the cheapest, nailed option.

    1. Piggs Boson
      • 12 Years
      4 years, 9 months ago

Ederson's VORP isn't too great. It doesn't factor in "coverage", but it does tell you how many points they'll get you over a cheaper replacement player.

      1. Ser Davos
        • 8 Years
        4 years, 9 months ago

mmm I wouldn't touch a premium keeper otherwise (Henderson/Heaton and a 4), but in his case I think it is worth it factoring in all the other bits of context

    2. Valar(Keith)
      • 14 Years
      4 years, 9 months ago

Here's the thing about Ederson.. One point I've mentioned below about cover. The other point is that in a team like City Ederson is likely to be scoring 2 6 2 6 for most runs due to the attackers usually sweeping up the bonuses and lack of save points in general . A 4.5 keeper can go on a run of 1 3 9 3 and still end up on the same points as Ederson due to save points and higher chance of baps. Over the season Ederson wins due to consistency.. But considering we get 3 bites at the cherry with keepers ie gw 1, WC1 and WC2 I'd rather punt on 3 different sub 5 keepers over a season with a good fixture run of 10 to 12 fixuted than just go with Ederson all season(which is where you'd likely get full value for him)

      1. polis
        • 12 Years
        4 years, 9 months ago

This is really sound logic. I'm usually in a set and forget non-premium keeper but written out like this makes a lot of sense.

          4 years, 9 months ago

Cheers mate. I hope ppl don't come looking for me when this all goes tits up :).. One other reason I like 4.5 keepers is increase in value. If a 4.5 keeper has a blinder they usually jump in price really quickly.. And atleast one or two of them will have a blinder in the first 2 gws and if I don't have a set and Forget keeper I can jump on them without overthinking it and gain value. Ederson won't have a 10+ game all season unless he gets an assist or saves a peno. A 4.5 keeper can have 10+ game just with a CS due to save points and baps

Only 8 keepers played the full 38 games last season.. 12 of them missed atleast one game(10 missed atleast 4 games!) . So there is atleast a 50 percent chance you'll have to make a transfer of sit with 0 points with a GK over a season if you don't have two keepers or a keeper with his deputy from the same team. The only 3 teams which have a playing keeper and 4.0 sub keeper are Brighton, Norwich and Everton. Would ideally stay away from Norwich so the best options look like ryan + Button or pickford + stekelenberg if you want the cheapest combo from the same team and If you are as paranoid about a playing bench as I am.

If you take the first half of the season only, 15 keepers played the full 19 games. I like a backup for the 2nd half alone personally.

I'm hoping we get Dean Henderson at 4.5m at Sheffield United. Defensive team with a quality shot stopper, they're usually very good value.

10 of them missed 4 games.. Though its a 50-50 gamble so probably nothing to sweat about. I've always liked 4.5 keepers though. Especially this season where there doesn't seem to be a 4.5 defender who looks like they can outscored the 4.5 gks.

I'm going with ryan for the first half of the season purely due to an oddity with Brightons fixture list till December. They play all of the top 6 away from home until then.. Those are the games I'm expecting nothing from anyway. However, this leads them to have some amazing home fixtures uptil December. Hoping they get their CS's in that home Fixture run and a CS is usually 9 points for Ryan. He ll be pointless to own in the second half of the season with all his home games vs the top sides so il shift him when I WC

Leading on from Brighton's fixtures, Trossard is a man to monitor in pre-season. The new manager likes to attack, and Trossard will be absolutely key in this.

I think Trossard would be the real talisman for Brighton, particularly because he was Genk's captain, he's got a good eye for goal and he's decent at set pieces. He's 24 so we can expect some decent performances from him.

Pick & Stek means you can only have one of Siggy, Rich, Digne, Coleman, seems a waste tbh. Ryan & Button got all 38 for 119, not great but maybe a foundation that's not too bad for a half spent. If they concede a few more pens maybe a PKS or two would get it to 140, which is really good value.

Nice mate, was looking at Kdb but means I’d need to downgrade Vardy to Jimi, unsure at the mo which way to go

Are we aware that Everton are looking to sign Diego Costa? Now that would be a game changer!

If he came in at 9m that would be interesting, 2 years younger than Vardy!

Would definitely be over 10m. I'd replace Vardy but would struggle to find the rest. I think I'd do it though, maybe Sterling to KdB.

Nice, also Arsenal considering Fraser could be interesting.

I've reserved my 3rd Mid spot for either Zaha or Fraser at Arsenal.

    Thoughts on a slightly revamped team;

    Lloris, Button
    TAA, VVD, Walker, Boly, Diop
    Salah, KDB, Brooks, Perez, Dendoncker
    Kane, King, Greenwod

Diop/Boly rotated each week to never face a top 6 side from last season.
Lloris set and forget - plenty of discussion how he can score just as much as Ederson (although can do Walker > Zinc and then Lloris to Ederson = Triple pool and triple City)

I think all round this is a pretty strong team?

      Diop/Balbuena, A Smith, Cathcart(?)

See below... If Fredericks IS nailed, I'd definitely pick him. He's got the fixtures to come off the bench now and then, and is attacking minded.

And by off the bench now and then I mean your bench of course.

Max Aarons could be a great pick if he leaves to Crystal Palace as rumoured.

    Is Fredericks nailed for WHU?

He was last season. Looks good on paper but got naff all. Hammers have an awful defence.

Unfortunately, more or less, with his only competition being 35 Zabaleta...

Hmm, back to the drawing board it is then. Really I want a 4.5 that can come off the bench in place of DCL, or Deulofeu whenever either of them have a bum fixture.

Early days I'd say Dunk's your man. I say early days - a 4.5 benchy defender is hardly a long-term option anyway.

Adding to the above, fixtures of bha, wat, NOR, avl ain't too shabby (sandwiched between both Manchester clubs)

If you're that desperate for a 4.5 you can't really go wrong with Diop/Balbuena?

I see a lot of people here have Gylfi. I am wondering why? I know he is a decent FPL player but still...

Decent stats in the last 10 games of 2018/19. On some set-pieces, Everton's fixtures look peachy, he's got a rocket of a shot on him. Your loss is our gain 😉

His record last season. Highest scoring midfielder outside CityPool, all of whom now cost 11.5m plus.

Fair points but I am not going with him. I only did when he played with Michu. That's where his decency comes from

This might be obvious but I struggled to find the FPL ID under my Gameweek. On my phone couldn't see the URL and it called up a search when tried to copy. For anyone else with similar issue: if you 'share' (eg; to gmail) the URL it will show up ready for a copy and paste.
Just thought info might help save some people a little bit of time (unless it's just me!).
