Salah’s FPL appeal boosted by early AFCON exit for Egypt

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) made a much earlier-than-anticipated exit from the Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday evening after Egypt were defeated 1-0 by South Africa.

The shock result means that Salah and his country have bowed out of the tournament over two weeks before it is due to finish.

Bafana Bafana’s victory could have repercussions in Fantasy Premier League, with Salah’s summer international obligations coming to an end before those of teammates Sadio Mane (£11.5m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.5m).

With the Africa Cup of Nations final taking place exactly three weeks before Gameweek 1 kicks off, we had previously expressed concern that Salah and/or Mane could be doubts for the 2019/20 curtain-raiser between Liverpool and Norwich City in August.

Last year, Dejan Lovren (£5.5m) and Jordan Henderson (£5.5m) were handed three weeks off after their exertions with Croatia and England at the World Cup.

Klopp is, indeed, expected to give Firmino and Alisson (£6.0m) the same amount of time to recover after their run to the final in the Copa America.

Salah’s premature departure from the Africa Cup of Nations, however, has effectively killed any concern that he won’t be ready for Gameweek 1 – barring any further injuries, of course.

Egypt 0-1 South Africa

Saturday’s result was an unanticipated outcome: Egypt were not only the host nation of the competition but also the pre-tournament favourites with the bookmakers and made it to the final in 2017.

Egypt went into the weekend with a 100% record in this year’s tournament, while South Africa had lost two of their three group matches and only qualified for the knockout stages as one of the best third-place teams.

Salah had been a doubt for this last-16 tie with a cold but recovered to line up, as he so often does, on the right flank.

The Liverpool winger looked below-par and didn’t have much influence on proceedings, however, with South Africa full-back Sifiso Hlanti proving more than a match for the premium FPL midfielder.

Salah started brightly and fizzed an early effort wide via a deflection but struggled to make an impression beyond that, save for one superb pass through to Mahmoud Trezeguet that the Egypt attacker should have converted.

Trezeguet had missed another chance that Salah had teed up earlier in the game, while the Liverpool man himself had two other blocked shots and drilled wide from a long-range free-kick.

Ahmed El Mohamady (£4.5m) and Mohamed Elneny (£4.5m) both started the game for Egypt, with the Aston Villa right-back completing the game and Elneny substituted with seven minutes to go.

Both of those two players will also now return to their respective Premier League clubs.

For what it’s worth, Percy Tau had an excellent match – the Brighton and Hove Albion attacker has not been able to get a work permit since his move to the Amex but a strong showing from South Africa this summer could change all that.

Uganda 0-1 Senegal

While Salah’s Africa Cup of Nations has come to an end, Mane and Senegal have progressed to the tournament quarter-finals after edging past Uganda on Friday.

It will be interesting to see just how far Mane goes with the Lions of Teranga, given the concerns we outlined above about Liverpool assets being handed three-week breaks following their international efforts this summer.

Senegal next face Benin on Wednesday, with their opponents being one of the lowest-ranked teams left in the competition.

Mane’s nation, meanwhile, are now as short as 8/5 with some bookmakers to win the tournament following Egypt’s exit.

The former Southampton winger was again in the thick of the action, scoring his side’s winner after 15 minutes before missing from the spot for the second time in this tournament.

Mane broke the deadlock when racing through to finish M’Baye Niang’s pass but, having missed from 12 yards against Kenya last week, then saw a second-half spot-kick saved after he himself was felled by opposition goalkeeper Denis Onyango.

Mane and Senegal can occasionally look dangerous going forward but this was a match low on goalscoring opportunities, with Senegal having just five shots in total.

The premium FPL midfielder was again deployed on the left wing and lasted the whole 90 minutes.

Budget midfield pair Cheikhou Kouyate and Idrissa Gana Gueye (both £5.0m) also played the full game.

Morocco 1-1 Benin (1-4 Penalties)
Nigeria 3-2 Cameroon

Wolves’ Romain Saiss (£4.5m) played the full 120 minutes as Morocco bowed out of the Africa Cup of Nations after a penalty shootout defeat on Friday.

Saiss impressed in defence as Morocco bossed the possession and chances but his country were unable to break down a stubborn Benin side who triumphed on penalties after playing the last 25 minutes of extra-time with only ten men.

Alex Iwobi (£6.0m) was on the scoresheet in the other round-of-16 tie to take place on Sunday as Nigeria edged past defending champions Cameroon in a five-goal thriller.

The lively Arsenal winger scored the game’s winner on 66 minutes, charging through to finish low past Andre Onana after being slipped through by Odion Ighalo.

Wilfred Ndidi (£5.0m) played the whole 90 minutes in midfield while Brighton’s Leon Balogun (£4.5m) replaced Iwobi in stoppage time.

We’ll bring you up to speed on the other Africa Cup of Nations games and the finals of the Copa America and Gold Cup in the coming days, as well as revealing the latest on Alexis Sanchez‘s (£7.0m) injury after the Manchester United winger was substituted in his country’s 2-1 defeat to Argentina on Saturday.

Wolves did very well against top teams, and the red matches are home to United and Chelsea and away to Everton - not too scary tbh. Unlike Jiminez in the Gold Cup, Jota's having a good rest over the summer, so i reckon he'll be fine. I have a front 3 of King, Jota and Deulofeu.

Even so with Jota’s rest. Playing 2 games a week isn’t ideal. Wolves’ squad is extremely light too (Think only 18 players used last season)

Which is why he'll play the PL matches. If he is flat it will be easy enough to switch to Wood, DCL or maybe Abrahams/Batty.

Deulo got 133 last season as a mid with 10 goals (10 extra points for 5 instead of 4 per goal) and 9 from CS. That means he would've finished last season with 114 points as a FWD. No thanks

King played 1000 more mins and had 2 more goals and 2 less assists. Deu higher ceiling if he can get more game time.

This is true (top 6 tend to play higher (as they're more attacking) thus this allows Vardy space behind the backline (which is what he likes) to run into).

You don't fancy Siggy over Rich?
The main problem is Anderson is too expensive to sit on your bench.
I'd downgrade him and get Sterling in for Kev as captain material (might require Dig>Col and Walk>Stones)
      Otherwise good.

Sorry, thought I replied to this, got caught up on post below.
Nah, Richar could be OOP as FWD if DCL doesn't impress in pre-season and Everton don't get another FWD in (Costa talk is from Owner, not manager). Also Siggy on less set-pieces.
Anderson won't be on the bench from GW2. Not starting him vs City though... Am now contemplating Yarmolenko after the post a few down which frees up another 1M (Brooks > Moura or Jorginho > 6M or Walker > Laporte with 0.5ITB)

Do you reckon he’s definitely nailed? I’ve a 6.0 slot that needs taken

Ings currently there assuming fitness as we should get a couple of games out of him before the injury’s hit again - Yarmo on the shortlist along with:

          JWP
          DCL
          Adams
          Lamela
          Grealish
          Etc

Adams will likely play more games if Ings injury record continues (which unfortunately looks likely)

But when both fit Ings is the far superior player & should start imo

Ings is a fantastic forward, he’s just made of the brittlest of fine Crystal & glass

But we’ve a huge advantage going into GW1 of having unlimited FT’s and the chance to observe his fitness

In my opinion, we were set up best when he was in the squad, he was so dangerous.

Obviously pre season will tell, but I’d be very surprised if he doesn’t make our first 11 which makes him underpriced at 6M.

Oh, you worded that in a confusing way 😆

Fornals could play CM, Lanzini behind our striker CAM.

Lanzini is best playing through the middle IMO, not right wing where yarmolenko plays.

With that injury record and his relatively recent recovery you’d think most clubs would be very reluctant to splash the cash for him just yet until he’s strung together 10-15 consecutive games?

There’s always someone that would take a risk.

West Ham are a good example of a club who continues to buy injury prone players (wilshere, Carroll.....).

Wilshire was a FT though so no real risk... and I think Carroll was a relatively small transfer fee after a year or two of loans...

West Ham are in a weak position when it comes to Lanzini in that the buying club can cite both his injury record and his imminently expiring contract as items to drive down his price...

Then again maybe that’s why they want to sell and would take peanuts for him now rather than let him sign a pre contract agreement for free in 6 months time

That's not to say I don't love him as a player and I think his work rate is incredible, however I think he could easily turn into a super sub and if we only pick up Maxi Gomez then Antonio could be deployed as a OOP striker (from 60/70 mins onwards or when resting Maxi). HOWEVER, again, with this being said, apparently we are in the market for Rondon also.

Selling Lanzini and using the funds + Arnie money to buy a striker would be perfect for West Ham.

        GK: Fabianski, Roberto, Martin
        LB: Cresswell, Masuaku
        RB: Fredericks, Zabaleta
        CB: Diop, Balbuena, Ogbonna, Reid
        DM: Rice, Obiang
        CM: Wilshere, Noble
        LM: Anderson, Snodgrass
        RM: Yarmolenko, Antonio
        AM: Fornals, Diangana
        FW: ?????, Hernandez, Silva

Two players for every position is perfect. Sell Byram, Hugill, Sanchez, Lanzini and Arnautovic. Buy a striker.

Three premier league fixtures and one champions league fixture last season.
Second youngest ever player to represent Man U in Europe and youngest ever in CL
Second youngest ever player to represent Man U in the PL

Lukaku on the way out? No replacements yet, leaves just Rashford as the only other FWD at the club.

First three lines would suggest he's beginning to breakthrough and line above suggests opportunities could arise. Also OGS wants United of old (Youth).

I would go Greenwood (fodder/potential starts if Lukaku goes and isn't replaced - wouldn't surprise me with United's current situation) and then upgrade Kelly (assuming 4.0 Kelly, not 4.5 Kelly) would give you 6M for another defender... Azpi, Luiz, Walker or Zinc (leaves 0.5itb) or Boly (rotates with Diop for not a top 6 team all season - leaves 1.0itb) Can then do Jota > Jimi, Noble > Yarmolenko or hold 1M or spend elsewhere

If Costa goes to Everton , how much do you think he'll come in at?

I personally think 9/9.5 is probably a good number for him (although I think Vardy a better pick at that range), but I also think nostalgia may make FPL towers over price him.

Every Draft to date has had Kane - and at 11.0 is is just a bit tempting.
My thinking has now changed to:
          Vardy
          Firmino
          Ings (or possibly Wood?)

        Yeah, tempted by Maddison/Tielemans too.

You don’t think Perez is a good option then? Not likely to be nailed or what?

We can check it out preseason. Maddison too hot and cold for me. Tielemans though...

If i remember correctly, Maddison & Tielemans played in attacking Midfield behind Vardy who was flanked by Gray/Barnes/Albrighton/Periera.
Where would you fit Perez ??
On flanks ?? He's not that quick whenever I've seen him.
Maybe he's backup to Vardy as other Strikers at Leicester are bad

Just spotted Utd's touring squad... Urgh... I'd be amazed if they finish in the top 10.

Bare in mind they've included Lukaku and Pogba...

Everyone hating on Chelsea sayin they'll be pants but they'll absolutely smash Utd first game.

I'd be amazed if United gets 'smashed' by Chelsea having new manager, NO HAZARD, Giroud/Batsman as their strikers and unable to sign any player's in the transfer market while United will surely (?) Strengthen their team during remaining transfer window.
If United sign a decent CB & CM, i can see us doing well this season.

Don't see it pal. Top players don't wanna know about Utd any more. Biggest problem is Woodward not having a clue. Don't see anyone at the club with any find of long term vision.

Dad's a life long red, so I like Utd more than any other Prem teams (I support Rochdale... What ya gunna do?)

But even he refuses to watch um any more. Sad state of affairs. Just needs someone to be a realist and say 'i need 3/5 years to work it out' but in this sacking climate I just don't see it any time soon. Ole won't last 3 months if the result are sour from the off.

Chelsea on the other hand have a sea of potential in every position because of the way they do their loan business. Tammy will eventually come good, CHO when he's back, mount, the rest... I think Lampards gone in and give it the 'vision' speech and I reckon he'll be the first manage Chelsea give a lot of time too and I think the results will end up showing that faith.

    B) Brooks, Giroud, Jota
