Our FPL 2019/20 articles, tips and advice so far

There has been plenty happening on our site since the late-June relaunch of Fantasy Premier League.

We have already taken a position-by-position look at the FPL price list and churned out several player comparison articles, while our community have been busy discussing everything from rotation pairs to positional changes.

This latest round-up article assembles everything we have written so far in one place.

Price List and Player Analysis

As happens every summer, our FPL coverage begins in earnest with an initial look at the price list.

Goalkeepers

Our goalkeeper analysis was divided into two parts, with a lament on the possible struggle for budget shot-stoppers in 2019/20 followed up by a glance through the options available for £5.0m+.

Defenders

Budget gems may be difficult to find among £4.0m-£4.5m defenders, too, but there is plenty for Fantasy managers to consider among the mid-price and premium options.

Giggs Boson and Ramboros were among the site users bemoaning the lack of choice in the sub-£5.0m tier, while The Fantasy FreAEK hailed Lucas Digne (£6.0m) and put Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.0m) under the spotlight in another Hot Topic.

The Alexander-Arnold versus Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) question is also one we posed in a Members’ article.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka‘s (£5.5m) price hike and move to Manchester United prompted a look at his underlying statistics, while we also asked if Seamus Coleman (£5.5m) could ‘cover’ Digne in the Everton defence.

Midfielders

Over 40% of the players in FPL are midfielders, so there were more articles devoted to this position in our price list analysis.

There was a whistle-stop tour of all the budget options available at £4.5m, £5.0m and £5.5m, while we also scrutinised the mid-price and premium alternatives in the middle of the park.

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Sadio Mane (£11.5m) are now separated by just one million in FPL and we assessed the two Liverpool options in an in-depth comparison piece.

That conundrum took an interesting turn when Salah and Egypt were eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations at the round-of-16 stage.

Gylfi Sigurdsson and Richarlison got the same treatment as we studied the two £8.0m-rated Everton options, while a price drop for Kevin De Bruyne (£9.5m) brought the Belgian back into focus as we looked at his appeal in 2019/20.

Forwards

Again, our look at the forwards was divided into three parts: budget, mid-price and premium.

Harry Kane‘s (£11.0m) price drop turned heads upon FPL’s launch for 2019/20 and led to us analysing the Spurs striker’s performances last season.

The Joshua King (£6.5m) versus Callum Wilson (£8.0m) debate is also one we explored in detail in a recent piece.

Debate about premium forwards also ensued in a discussion prompted by ZoumasBloomers.

Positional Changes

We rounded up the players who have changed position in FPL on launch day, with Ludo looking at the possible repercussions of the various reclassifications.

Ayoze Perez (£6.5m) was one such example and the former Newcastle United attacker was the subject of a ‘Moving Target’ article upon his move to Leicester City.

Rotation Pairs and Fixture Difficulty

Rotation was a concept we looked at upon the release of the Premier League fixture list in June, with Portsmouth Bubblejet detailing the ten perfect combinations that guarantee Fantasy managers a home fixture every week – something Doosra reminded us of last week.

The teams with the best and worst fixtures have also been identified in our very first Frisking the Fixtures articles of 2019/20.

New Premier League Players

Premier League clubs have been increasingly active in the transfer market over the past few weeks and we’ve been profiling many of the big-name arrivals as and when they happen.

Scout Reports on the following players are already available to read, with more to follow over the summer:

On top of this, we have also profiled new Brighton boss Graham Potter.

FPL Assets in International Action

There have been dozens of Premier League players representing their countries in various tournaments this summer, from the Copa America and Africa Cup of Nations to the Gold Cup and European Under-21 Championships.

Our Scout Notes articles have been keeping you abreast of the latest developments concerning FPL assets and will continue to do so over the coming weeks.

Frank Lampard’s Appointment

Maurizio Sarri’s exit at Stamford Bridge was followed by the appointment of Frank Lampard as manager of Chelsea, with the former Derby County boss’s first press conference as the Blues’ head coach covered in an article last Friday.

A full Scout Report is imminent but in the meantime, let us point you in the direction of two Hot Topics from Rotation’s Alter Ego and AK for excellent discussion and analysis of the new Chelsea boss.

Newly Promoted Teams

Earlier in the summer, we brought you an in-depth analysis of the three newly promoted clubs, their managers and their 2018/19 squads.

You can catch up with that reading via the links below:

Norwich City
Sheffield United
Aston Villa

If you are going Ryan then surely you should take Button as the 4.0? His ownership will be high so there may be a risk of price drops but it is one for the plus column for Ryan that you can guarantee a GK for 8.5

initially had Button, then thought about high ownership leading to a price drop early on... i get your point though!!

I'm avoiding Button for that very reason. Seems like a particularly ignorant bandwagon.

How is it ignorant? Firstly, a player with low ownership is much more likely to drop when people start selling, and secondly, do you really think people are buying him expecting him to play? Of course they are not so why would they be selling unless for a change of structure on a wc?

That's the point. At over 22%, that will amount to over a million players when the season starts. Surely a lot of those will wildcard in the early weeks, so there's a high chance of tens or hundreds of thousands of sell-offs.

Im currently set up with 4 at the back with Salah & Sterling. With 2 up top budget strikers. But wot concerns me is goin with 1 premium striker & with so much budget invested in defence will make it difficult bar using the WC to quickly get in a Kane or Kun, if the go nuts. Curre g set up has a severve lack of flexibility. Perhaps i out to atleast start with Vardy, as he can be upgraded a lot more easiily than 6.5 6.5 4.5 up top

    1. pingissimus
      • 5 Years
      4 years, 9 months ago

This is my current set up - having Vardy. I may yet get either Kane or Auba instead.

I'm feeling that at least one premium striker is going to be the way to go. Everyone seems to be hating season value up top and ignoring transfers. Auba and Kane and Kun were actually value for most of last season provided you didn't set and forget and who does that with a premium striker?

Exactly why I'm going with Salah and Aguero as my two big hitters. Aguero, like Alonso and Richarlison, is one of those players that tends to start seasons really well. All the scouts seem to advocate setting up a flexible steam structure from the off. I'm going to take their advice because they've proved their worth.

If they go nuts then you’ve already missed those points. Better off not have a structure to get their easily as it might save you points chasing.

C-L could be a decent choice, but rumour mill suggests they will buy another striker. Costa has been linked to them.

Monitor WHU now that Arnie is officially leaving. The Little Pea might be good value at £6m if he is first (or only) choice striker.

Eye test I guess. For me Anderson has a very languid style of play that is frustrating to watch whereas Fraser has lots of energy and has a very good understanding with Wilson. Go Fraser for first two and you can downgrade to Anderson if it looks like the wrong call

How's the first team draft looking?

    Lloris

    Button - Dendonker - Kelly - Nkeitah

    1. Teror

Looks good enough. KdB is a poor Sterling/Aguero subsitute IMO. I'd want him along side one of those two, not as a replacement. Lloris feels unncessary Spurs defensive cover: I mean they're not the best defensive team in the world and if you really want a premium keeper you're better off going with Ederson. Ake probably can't justify that extra 0.5. I think you'd be better off downgrading him to a Taylor and upgrading Kelly to a Diop, who rotate very well. I'm not a fan of Deulofeu now that he's classified as a striker. It's hardly like he scored a shedload of points last season and I expect him to now sink beneath King and Wood after his reclassification. But the rest is good.

Like it a lot for a Mo Sterling team

The one area I disagree is having both Laporte and VVD. They could be great but equally there’s a strong possibility that they will return very unevenly like last season which could be a real bore early on. One not both imo.

Feel you can do better than Felipe, but he's a good punt if you want something different; same goes for Brooks.

Not a fan of Bournemouth defenders at all, but Ake is the best pick of a bad bunch.

Also have a personal preference for Sterling over Kane, which would also allow you to downgrade KDB and spread the funds to the positions I previously mentioned. A solid team though - my main problem is Ake.

Trouble is he’d be competing with either Zaha or Fraser - that’s one area Arsenal are looking to change. Don’t see him getting the LW spot ahead of them.

Could yet work I guess as PvA benefitted from playing behind Zaha as all the Palace attacks went down the left. But RH then ended up dropping PvA as the left was dire defensively. Emery likely to follow suit

If not Lw, he can always play at LB and still get attacking returns.
He'll keep going forward, don't see him being given a defensive role at LB/LWB

Thing is he missed out quite a lot last time did he not presumably because he was a defensive liability. If Arsenal buy a left wing and that seems what they most want I’m guessing Emery will look to shore up the left defence so no Kola.

Guess it's a wait and watch as of now. If not attacking Points, I really expect them to keep 2/2 cs. I'll be happy with that too.

Might be one of the better back ups if Arsenal loosen their purse strings so wouldn’t get too attached

Playing 442 most of the time I guess

        Yes. 442 my prime formation.
First 2 fixtures are too good. And have not seen him in any of the teams ( most teams are avoiding arsenal ) .

Different, but not a fan of Lloris (commit to a 6.0m premium or 4.5m option), Kolasinac (I don't have the balls), Richarlison (I'm boring and prefer Siggy) or Yarmalenko (great player, not an established fantasy asset).

A solid squad if you fancy some risks (as you clearly do), but not for me. 🙂

With signing of ndombele, Spurs will be tight at the back plus the new stadium will suit them.

Kolasinac is a beast. First 2 fixtures are too good. And have not seen him in any of the teams ( most teams are avoiding arsenal ) .

I fancy rich to outscore him.

Yarmolenko will be the breakout fpl player. Was good last season till injury hit him

Agree on Lloris and Spurs point. Fab I think is the next best - he offers similar value as last season and is more likely I think to improve than Ederson who only offers the same value. What Lloris and Fab have in common are loads of saves. It then becomes a question of which team is more likely to add more cs and whether that 0.5 is useful elsewhere.

The team which is likely to add more cs has to be Spurs because they are the better team

WH start from a lower base so not necessarily. It’s a close call for me.

I’m finding it goes quite a long way. It also opens up the possibility of Trippier if he stays and Aurier is out - from GW3 on those fixtures look quite ok.

I think you may be leaving yourself a little vulnerable without Salah whose ownership and captaincy % will be very high GW1. I'm not a fan of playing 'defence' over the course of a season but it would be incredibly disheartening if Mo banged in a hatty first match on that Friday night and you didn't even own him. Id be a little wary of Trippier game time as always a rotation risk, as for Milli I think he could still be a good pick but only if Zaha stays at Palace to win the pens. You could end up with 4 City there if Ake ends up joining them. Got a feeling Kun may start sharing game time with Jesus this season but time will tell.

Yeah. I'm not keen on Trippier due to his injuries so it will likely be a one week punt and then I'll replace him. I think I'd rather have Sterling and Kun before Salah, but maybe it would be more sensible to just go with one city heavy hitter.

Admittedly I had Mane but I got a green arrow when TC Mo bagged a hattie by captaining Liverpool defence. Effective triple defence and 5 mill elsewhere can defend Mo.

It won’t work all the time but what’s in its favour is Mo works much best at home as does the defence.

Not too keen on the midfield, you need Salah or Mane in there, I'd be downgrading Kun to a cheaper striker since you have Sterling and get a Liverpool mid in

I just made a team that I really like but it wasn't until I sat back to admire it that I realised I had no Man City Attack. Bearing in mind most people can't afford more than one City big hitter could I get away with it?

    1. The 12th Man

As long as your other players match them, then yes.
Liverpool and City score more on a regular basis than other teams though. Guess that’s the thinking. Go where the goals are likely to come from.

    2. The Overthinker
      • 7 Years

      Maybe.
If the player you choose outscores the city player, then it's a win for you. As you'll gain a lot from that , increase in rank and more points.

This won't be the case all the time, but there's a good possibility of this happening at times

Although many will argue they're fixture-proof, I think if you're going to risk no City attack, the start of a season with their first three 'poor(ish)' fixtures is as good a time as any. And it should give you a big boost to your rank if your alternatives do well.

      "template type of side"
Kosi could pay off but clean sheets are not Arsenal's strong point.
Perez I like. Jogi a waste. Jota and King saving for 3 big hitters.
The 1st side I have seen so far that successfully keeps the the 3.
      Obviously nothing on the bench.

  25. Eze Really?

A little risky but if I get 2 of the 4 marginals right I will class it a success. Otherwise an early WC. Playing options of 4/5 at the back

Ryan (Button) Not sold at all on thids.
TAA Robbo Digne MENDY CHRISTENSEN (Hoping Lampard's public love of Christensen pays. Mendy duck or no dinner
Salah De Bryn MOUTINHO STEIPERMANN DJENPEPRO (3 5.5's pushing it Maybe but opens up strong defenders and getting Kane)
    King Kane (Nketiah)

Very out of the box. How are others trying to accommodate 2 big hitters with good defenders?
