Our FPL 2019/20 articles, tips and advice so far

There has been plenty happening on our site since the late-June relaunch of Fantasy Premier League.

We have already taken a position-by-position look at the FPL price list and churned out several player comparison articles, while our community have been busy discussing everything from rotation pairs to positional changes.

This latest round-up article assembles everything we have written so far in one place.

Price List and Player Analysis

As happens every summer, our FPL coverage begins in earnest with an initial look at the price list.

Goalkeepers

Our goalkeeper analysis was divided into two parts, with a lament on the possible struggle for budget shot-stoppers in 2019/20 followed up by a glance through the options available for £5.0m+.

Defenders

Budget gems may be difficult to find among £4.0m-£4.5m defenders, too, but there is plenty for Fantasy managers to consider among the mid-price and premium options.

Giggs Boson and Ramboros were among the site users bemoaning the lack of choice in the sub-£5.0m tier, while The Fantasy FreAEK hailed Lucas Digne (£6.0m) and put Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.0m) under the spotlight in another Hot Topic.

The Alexander-Arnold versus Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) question is also one we posed in a Members’ article.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka‘s (£5.5m) price hike and move to Manchester United prompted a look at his underlying statistics, while we also asked if Seamus Coleman (£5.5m) could ‘cover’ Digne in the Everton defence.

Midfielders

Over 40% of the players in FPL are midfielders, so there were more articles devoted to this position in our price list analysis.

There was a whistle-stop tour of all the budget options available at £4.5m, £5.0m and £5.5m, while we also scrutinised the mid-price and premium alternatives in the middle of the park.

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Sadio Mane (£11.5m) are now separated by just one million in FPL and we assessed the two Liverpool options in an in-depth comparison piece.

That conundrum took an interesting turn when Salah and Egypt were eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations at the round-of-16 stage.

Gylfi Sigurdsson and Richarlison got the same treatment as we studied the two £8.0m-rated Everton options, while a price drop for Kevin De Bruyne (£9.5m) brought the Belgian back into focus as we looked at his appeal in 2019/20.

Forwards

Again, our look at the forwards was divided into three parts: budget, mid-price and premium.

Harry Kane‘s (£11.0m) price drop turned heads upon FPL’s launch for 2019/20 and led to us analysing the Spurs striker’s performances last season.

The Joshua King (£6.5m) versus Callum Wilson (£8.0m) debate is also one we explored in detail in a recent piece.

Debate about premium forwards also ensued in a discussion prompted by ZoumasBloomers.

Positional Changes

We rounded up the players who have changed position in FPL on launch day, with Ludo looking at the possible repercussions of the various reclassifications.

Ayoze Perez (£6.5m) was one such example and the former Newcastle United attacker was the subject of a ‘Moving Target’ article upon his move to Leicester City.

Rotation Pairs and Fixture Difficulty

Rotation was a concept we looked at upon the release of the Premier League fixture list in June, with Portsmouth Bubblejet detailing the ten perfect combinations that guarantee Fantasy managers a home fixture every week – something Doosra reminded us of last week.

The teams with the best and worst fixtures have also been identified in our very first Frisking the Fixtures articles of 2019/20.

New Premier League Players

Premier League clubs have been increasingly active in the transfer market over the past few weeks and we’ve been profiling many of the big-name arrivals as and when they happen.

Scout Reports on the following players are already available to read, with more to follow over the summer:

On top of this, we have also profiled new Brighton boss Graham Potter.

FPL Assets in International Action

There have been dozens of Premier League players representing their countries in various tournaments this summer, from the Copa America and Africa Cup of Nations to the Gold Cup and European Under-21 Championships.

Our Scout Notes articles have been keeping you abreast of the latest developments concerning FPL assets and will continue to do so over the coming weeks.

Frank Lampard’s Appointment

Maurizio Sarri’s exit at Stamford Bridge was followed by the appointment of Frank Lampard as manager of Chelsea, with the former Derby County boss’s first press conference as the Blues’ head coach covered in an article last Friday.

A full Scout Report is imminent but in the meantime, let us point you in the direction of two Hot Topics from Rotation’s Alter Ego and AK for excellent discussion and analysis of the new Chelsea boss.

Newly Promoted Teams

Earlier in the summer, we brought you an in-depth analysis of the three newly promoted clubs, their managers and their 2018/19 squads.

You can catch up with that reading via the links below:

Norwich City
Sheffield United
Aston Villa

FPL League Codes

For the Fantasy managers who may have missed them, here are the entry codes to various FPL mini-leagues that are already up and running:

  • Fantasy Football Scout – ooyz44
  • FFS H2H League (entry) – gh0126
  • Red Lightning’s Top 10k Any Season – kmow16

Thoughts? I think I've made it.

    Ederson
    Robbo - TAA - Digne - Trippier
    Salah - KdB - Bilva - Siggy
    King - Deulofeu

Good team. I'd prefer another premium attacker as I'm not too keen on the captaincy options (Salah/De Bruyne rotating?) but if you go with 4 big defenders, thats the price you pay as I'm sure you're aware. Who's on the bench?

Not a fan of forwards either but you are very light in this dept.
Del Boy is hot and cold. Bilva can frustrate at his price. Trippier might not play.

I rued picking King from the off last season and I'm not sold on him at all but I just don't see any alternatives at 6.5. Jota has Europa League committments to tire him, both he and Delofeu would've scored a lot less points last season had they been classified as forwards, which then only leaves King and Wood. Bournemouth more attacking than Burnley, hence King's popularity.

I want to play 4-4-2 rather than 5-3-2 but I can't bring myself to drop anyone from my sexy defense. Thoughts? I know everyone is going to jump on Alonso, but he always starts so well and is currently an uber differential.

You can't have them all. Dunk has good fixtures and Brighton are quite solid defensively. He's sexier than a 4.0 than Kelly. And he'll rotate with Noble as I switch between 4-4-2 and 5-3-2.

      Dunk sexy?

My way out of this is to see 5.0 Fab offers the same value as 6.0 Ederson. If you free up a million then you can make a difference in midfield.

I’ve also noted how City defence only really came into its own in the long run in when they racked up all those cs. They were a good deal less consistent through the season than Liverpool.

Alonso > Azpi for security and steady income of points
Use leftover 0.5 to go Digne > Coleman

But yeah, no reason why not to play 532 over 442 this season

The other one to monitor is Christensen. If he’s nailed as a 5.0 - which is possible - then he’s this season’s AWB.

Rudiger is injured apparently and there’s an idea floating around that Lampard really rates him from what he has previously said. I’m provisionally on Luiz but fascinated by the idea.

Everything Chelsea is an unknown of course but I think I’m prepared to take one of their defence from GW1

Christensen for 5m would be well worth a gamble depending on how long rudiger out for then. Yeah I'm not ruling out a chelsea defender either

David Silva going under the radar at 7.5m City attacking asset?

I know it wil be his last season, but surely the phasing out will begin halfway through the season and he would see quite a lot of playing time in the first half. Or does everyone sees him of too big a risk?

rather spend that 7.5mn on fraser who will atleast get 2 pts per game and dont have fully fit kdb stealing his setpieces. Its better to have a core player from mediocre team than a regular player from great team. same reason why rich, fraser, siggy scored more points than bsikva for almost same price

Lot of competition, he played more than he would have done last season because of injuries. Throw Rodri in the mix and more game time for Foden and he isn't really and FPL asset anymore ... more's the pity!

Almost every summer is the same - starting drafts with 4-5 premium at the back, but in the end go for 3 at the back and strong forward line.
Now I am seriously think, that Kane and Vardy up front with Salah perma-captain for 1-8 gameweeks is the way to go (without Sterling). Anybody same?

Actually I think it`s the way to go too from the start, because King (6,5) can easily outscore for 1-4 gameweeks Laporte, Azpi (we all have 2 Liv defenders and Digne). On the season distance Laporte/Azpi will outscore him, but WC at some point and shift to strong back line is possible.

not last summer. Last season forwards pts per match was bad on average still they dint get price drop they deserved. 4-4-2 will work well this season atleast early on. Maybe have a look at Spurs post gw 12

Ditto bar the minor detail of no Mo for me.

I’m trying to squeeze KdB Sterling in with Vardy Kane (possibly Auba in 1 and 2). Very doable. Even get some sexy add ons too.

(I came unstuck with Mo last time around just because he became a de facto perma captain for about 10 weeks. Yes it was the wrong 10 weeks but if you go Sterling Vardy Kane then there’ll be weeks when he won’t be the logical captain and then why have him except as a defensive move? The potential upside of getting the best captain each week outweighs any fear factor for me)

Liverpool have a nice opening run, Salah could go off.

Currently on the same, but think I need to get Sterling in.

City are just so prolific and will score an insane amount of goals again this year.

One of Salah/Kane/Sterling will have to miss out sadly.

            Everton?
Hmmmm...got fooled by Tosun last year. He was excellent finishing the year before and I picked him up over Wilson Arnie Jimenez.

But you have a point here Sir

You will have .5 keeper on the bench after week 1 wasted.

Probably just going with whichever Burnley keeper proves to be first choice.

Looking at rotating two £4.5m defenders and would appreciate any recommendations for teams and/or players. Currently considering Villa and Burnley but nothing jumps out at me.

    Any ideas guys?

Taylor and Targett or Taylor and Diop maybe.

Pick two from Taylor, Diop and Dunk. Diop rotates well with either and all three have a pretty kind run of fixtures for the first 10 weeks.

Currently thinking 4-3-3 because of the value in defence, my inability to decide on a mid priced fourth mid and because there’s no playing strikers at £4.5m.

        Seems viable.
        2 or 3 big hitters?

Salah and Sterling for the main armband options, three mid priced strikers.

probably 442...maybe 532 because of value in defense

Looking at pure value, 541 or 451 seems good on paper, but I don't want to go with only 1 playing striker...too risky

4-4-2 with emphasis on defence and midfield.
No heavy strikers for me this year.
      Jim and Wilson

I really like the sub 8 midfielders and the sub 9 forwards.. So to increase my chances of getting the best ones I'm going 3 4 3. The added benefit is I like having a bench and there are no 4.5 strikers available. Currently on
      Ryan
      Robertson VVD Walker
      Salah BSilva Siggy Zaha
      Vardy Wilson King
      Button Taylor Dendonker 4.0

Only issue is I want another city attacker and can't quite fit one in. Maybe Zaha and Vardy to kdb and Deulofeu..either way that's the structure I have planned

4-4-2 with Kane and King up top.
Heavy defence and Salah with friends in midfield.

Why is too hard of a question. Just feels good man.

From the very beginning I was about to go with Mane, and not Salah.. It just seemed to me that he is more focused on goal scoring + the extra £ .. But all the teams I see got Salah.. Am I the only one crazy, or should I just ignore and play my thing?

Its because of penalties when Milner isn't on the pitch. Plus now Egypt out of AFCON. Mane still in it.

Salah getting knocked out early from the ACON probably cements it for me, plus penalties and seemingly more captainable in away games.

Always do your own thing if you believe in it. If reading comments/stats convinced you Salah is better then change it. If not, stick!

    Hey lads, advice needed here.

I have set up my team but the defence is bothering me.
I will play with 4 at the back
Atm I have Robbo Van dijk digne Kelly and Simpson.

Is 2 4.0s (Kelly Simpson) ok or should I go for Coleman and upgrade one of my 4.0 for a 4.5?

I haven't seen Walker in many teams at all. He's cheaper than Laporte and if you don't have Ederson in goal I think he should be in your team.

Rumours that they might be in for another right back and he didn’t have a great season. However, he could be good next season at that price, yeah.

    No Man city in my team & I seriously don't believe they offer better value than my current team;

    Ryan (Button)
    TAA, VVD, Digne (Targett, Kelly)
    Salah, Siggy, Anderson, Perez, Zaha
    Kane, King (Wickham)

Anyone going to be able to convince me otherwise?
