Our FPL 2019/20 articles, tips and advice so far

There has been plenty happening on our site since the late-June relaunch of Fantasy Premier League.

We have already taken a position-by-position look at the FPL price list and churned out several player comparison articles, while our community have been busy discussing everything from rotation pairs to positional changes.

This latest round-up article assembles everything we have written so far in one place.

Price List and Player Analysis

As happens every summer, our FPL coverage begins in earnest with an initial look at the price list.

Goalkeepers

Our goalkeeper analysis was divided into two parts, with a lament on the possible struggle for budget shot-stoppers in 2019/20 followed up by a glance through the options available for £5.0m+.

Defenders

Budget gems may be difficult to find among £4.0m-£4.5m defenders, too, but there is plenty for Fantasy managers to consider among the mid-price and premium options.

Giggs Boson and Ramboros were among the site users bemoaning the lack of choice in the sub-£5.0m tier, while The Fantasy FreAEK hailed Lucas Digne (£6.0m) and put Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.0m) under the spotlight in another Hot Topic.

The Alexander-Arnold versus Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) question is also one we posed in a Members’ article.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka‘s (£5.5m) price hike and move to Manchester United prompted a look at his underlying statistics, while we also asked if Seamus Coleman (£5.5m) could ‘cover’ Digne in the Everton defence.

Midfielders

Over 40% of the players in FPL are midfielders, so there were more articles devoted to this position in our price list analysis.

There was a whistle-stop tour of all the budget options available at £4.5m, £5.0m and £5.5m, while we also scrutinised the mid-price and premium alternatives in the middle of the park.

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Sadio Mane (£11.5m) are now separated by just one million in FPL and we assessed the two Liverpool options in an in-depth comparison piece.

That conundrum took an interesting turn when Salah and Egypt were eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations at the round-of-16 stage.

Gylfi Sigurdsson and Richarlison got the same treatment as we studied the two £8.0m-rated Everton options, while a price drop for Kevin De Bruyne (£9.5m) brought the Belgian back into focus as we looked at his appeal in 2019/20.

Forwards

Again, our look at the forwards was divided into three parts: budget, mid-price and premium.

Harry Kane‘s (£11.0m) price drop turned heads upon FPL’s launch for 2019/20 and led to us analysing the Spurs striker’s performances last season.

The Joshua King (£6.5m) versus Callum Wilson (£8.0m) debate is also one we explored in detail in a recent piece.

Debate about premium forwards also ensued in a discussion prompted by ZoumasBloomers.

Positional Changes

We rounded up the players who have changed position in FPL on launch day, with Ludo looking at the possible repercussions of the various reclassifications.

Ayoze Perez (£6.5m) was one such example and the former Newcastle United attacker was the subject of a ‘Moving Target’ article upon his move to Leicester City.

Rotation Pairs and Fixture Difficulty

Rotation was a concept we looked at upon the release of the Premier League fixture list in June, with Portsmouth Bubblejet detailing the ten perfect combinations that guarantee Fantasy managers a home fixture every week – something Doosra reminded us of last week.

The teams with the best and worst fixtures have also been identified in our very first Frisking the Fixtures articles of 2019/20.

New Premier League Players

Premier League clubs have been increasingly active in the transfer market over the past few weeks and we’ve been profiling many of the big-name arrivals as and when they happen.

Scout Reports on the following players are already available to read, with more to follow over the summer:

On top of this, we have also profiled new Brighton boss Graham Potter.

FPL Assets in International Action

There have been dozens of Premier League players representing their countries in various tournaments this summer, from the Copa America and Africa Cup of Nations to the Gold Cup and European Under-21 Championships.

Our Scout Notes articles have been keeping you abreast of the latest developments concerning FPL assets and will continue to do so over the coming weeks.

Frank Lampard’s Appointment

Maurizio Sarri’s exit at Stamford Bridge was followed by the appointment of Frank Lampard as manager of Chelsea, with the former Derby County boss’s first press conference as the Blues’ head coach covered in an article last Friday.

A full Scout Report is imminent but in the meantime, let us point you in the direction of two Hot Topics from Rotation’s Alter Ego and AK for excellent discussion and analysis of the new Chelsea boss.

Newly Promoted Teams

Earlier in the summer, we brought you an in-depth analysis of the three newly promoted clubs, their managers and their 2018/19 squads.

You can catch up with that reading via the links below:

Norwich City
Sheffield United
Aston Villa

FPL League Codes

For the Fantasy managers who may have missed them, here are the entry codes to various FPL mini-leagues that are already up and running:

Why do people think VAR will increase penalties? It just makes the decision more accurate. Could give penalties that would have otherwise been not given, also could overturn penalties which would have otherwise been given.

    1. FC Hakkebøf
      • 7 Years
      4 years, 9 months ago

It has increased the amount of penalty in every scenario it has been implemented. Before, when the ref was in doubt, he did NOT call for a penalty. Meant that 50/50 situations were not deemed as penalties.

        https://www.economist.com/graphic-detail/2018/06/25/var-increases-refereeing-accuracy-but-not-the-total-penalty-count
Not very true. In worldcup it increased by 5 penalties but on league matches played in 6 european countries, there was no net gain.

    2. nisag17
      • 14 Years
      4 years, 9 months ago

Stats from where it was implemented are mixed. And it can also change defender behaviour. So defenders might become more careful. So no one can say.

      1. FC Hakkebøf
        • 7 Years
        4 years, 9 months ago

Well the latter part is true. But Defenders has to change their mindset. I don't believe that will be the case for the first half of the season at least

    3. DeathoftheParty
      • 7 Years
      4 years, 9 months ago

Would be interesting to see how many penalties there were last year and how many there should have been.

But yeah, I don't think it'll be a massive deal... Could realistically reduce Zaha's output as an example. Assists all over the place for pens last year but if he's actually been getting freebies then he'll be found out. Not saying that's the case, just for example.

    4. Valar(Keith)

With Salah, Siggy, Vardy, King, Jiminez(ish), Kane, Auba, Barnes, Aguero being good fpl assets and also being on penalties I'm considering making my team spine via most of them since there's no harm in doing so. I won't go crazy and get jorginho, noble, mili etc just for the sake of penalties though

Am I the only one that prefers Maddison over Vardy?
He will shine under Rodgers, he was so unlucky not to assist more times last year.

    1. St Pauli Walnuts
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Think it is the early fixtures putting people off initially, Vardy is still liable to pinch the odd goal against top 6.

      1. Markus
        • 14 Years
        4 years, 9 months ago

Stats don't necessarily back up that vardy scores a higher proportion than others v top 6. It also doesn't follow that maddison returns or expected returns increased under Rodgers, so there's elements of risk/uncertainty with both. Perez IF he seems nailed seems like decent compromise to start with

I think there is a higher risk on Perez.
Played for Rodgers is a whole different thing than Benitez.
Leicester has a decent attacking minded team with great mids and strikers whereas Newcastle was based on defence and the big guy upfront rondon, so he had the chance and the space to act as a second striker.

Dont know if he can keep up with Rodgers' style of play

Yeah, that may be the case. Good point. I'm sure one or all 3 will provide good value at some point this season, surely there's plenty of goals there!

I prefer going Leicesterless in the opening fixtures. But could easily see Maddisson being as productive as Siggy this season

Would be my pick from Leicester, think he will have an excellent season just early fixtures put me off as most of his returns last season came against the lesser sides.

Great player, in a different way, but it's Deulo who is on the shoulder of defenders, playing furthest forward. Scored quite a few goals from the counter-attack last season. Deulofeu keeps getting better with every game, and Deeney is ageing.

That story keeps flip-flopping, but it sounds more likely to happen than not now.
I don't think Gomez will be necessarily a go to pick unless he's less than 7m (unlikely) but he'll bring the other attacking mids in more than Arnie I'd say. In particular I think Gomez in means a more productive Anderson (judging by what I have seen).

He did improve to be fair, but was poor in the play off final. El Mohamady looked so much more assured on the other side.

They tightened up massively when Mings joined though. Interested to see what his valuation will be when he gets added to the game. I'd be all over Mings if he gets valued at 4.5, but I fear it may be 5

Haven't seen him. I'd say if they only sign one forward before the window closes, he's as good a 4.5 as any. But my money is on them signing two, and even a mid (Antonio or Yarmo) playing up top before Xande is picked.

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 5 Years
        4 years, 9 months ago

Rich has had two seasons in EPL, and two explosive starts to a season in EPL, both under Silva (I think)

History makes me prefer him, but then reality is a bit different:
        1. The system Silva switched to that increased their defensive form doesn't exactly favour Rich
        2. Everton has become clever/deadly with set pieces, and Siggy has a good share of those
        3. Siggy outscored Rich in FPL last season but went under the radar for a long time
        4. Siggy had 0 missed penalties in EPL before last season (hasn't he been the assigned taker in both his EPL clubs so far?), then missed 3 last season, definitely enough to skew his FPL points in the negative direction from his expected points (could have reached 200 if he scored those 3)
        5. I don't recall Richarlison being this involved for Brazil in previous seasons. Might be wrong here, but Rich is more likely to still be affected by some level of fatigue when preseason comes

Wait on Pre-season. Pope expected to be no.1.

you can't have Salah, Sterling and Aguero. With likes of Wilson, Jimenez, King a lot of people are going with light forwards. Perhaps they will rotate Salah and Sterling in captaining. But Aguero is such a value and best triple captain candidate. Your thoughts on Kun VS triple light forwards?

    1. Athletic Nasherbo
      • 7 Years
      4 years, 9 months ago

Kun is flying under the radar for sure. For 12.0m however I think I’d wait considering the away games to start with which Aguero doesn’t excel in typically.

    2. Ze_Austin
      • 5 Years
      4 years, 9 months ago

The template here is 1 or 2 light forwards with heavy midfield and defence, not 3 light forwards

I'm currently on 4-5-1 with Wesley on the bench

Aguero is not "such a value". Value means points per million. Also, Aguero can't outscore Sterling in FPL based on the way points are given in FPL, except if Sterling surprisingly falls out of favour or gets injured long term, which can also happen to Aguero

    3. Bilbao Baggins

If you are choosing only one of him or Sterling as a mainstay in your team for the foreseeable future, Sterling seems to have the ability to outscore him.

In regards to triple captain debates, you will likely make transfers prior to playing the chip so you could always bring Aguero in specifically.

Massive punt, considering he's new to the league, unproven at this level etc, but the way we play with lots of crosses into the box should suit him.

Could he be a wood/rondon/mitrovic/murray equivalent do you think? Obviously Huddersfield and Cardiff strikers failed miserably but everton aside (who play quite differently, and dcl didn't get nailed) seems like there's usually a good few points in a striker from any team

        1. Andy_Social
          • 11 Years

I personally think Che Adams could be this year's Mitrovic, but I wouldn't start with any untried punts in GW1. I'd wait a few weeks to see who emerges.

I can't help feel with the pricing this year there will be a number of high scoring 6-7m players, Chelsea/Man utd forwards, talismen from lower sides. But difficult to predict who yet, hence probable early wildcards!

I think the team is set up for him to be successful, as it was with Abraham, and he doesn't currently have much competition (Kodjia, Davis) which is good news. I'd also expect us to score more goals than Huddersfield and Cardiff with Grealish pulling the strings.

    Ryan/Heaton
    TAA - VVD - Laporte - Digne
    Salah - Sterling - Siggy - Zaha
    King - Deulofeu/6.5

    (Button - Dedoncker - 4.0DEF - 4.5FWD)
    0.0m

Currently set on this structure but the bench worries me a bit.

Could get Ederson & 2x4.5 Defs for Laporte, 4.0def & 4.5gk. But it's easier to downgrade a premium def than gk if needed.
