Use Rate My Team to help build your FPL squad in 2019/20

Our Rate My Team tool has been updated over the weekend and is now available to use in our Members’ Area.

Access to this feature requires membership, which is now available for the yearly price of £17.50. Registered users can upgrade their accounts via this link, while new users can register as members here.

For full details on all the benefits of membership, view this page.

Former FPL champions Tom Fenley and Simon March have said Rate My Team was a helpful tool to use in their successful seasons.

Subscribers can use the RMT feature by clicking on ‘Build My Team’ from the ‘Rate My Team’ drop-down menu.

Once the 2019/20 campaign is underway, members will be able to enter their Fantasy Premier League team ID and see what scores RMT projects for the coming Gameweek and beyond.

We will be tweaking the numbers on a regular basis over the summer as new players enter the game and pre-season friendlies reveal more to us about likely starting line-ups and tactics.

The ‘Projections’ tab will also be updated in due course.

A members-only Hot Topic has already been set up by Geoff for you to discuss your first impressions and bring to light any oddities you may discover.

The projections are based on the Rate My Team statistical model, developed by Chris Atkinson (aka RMT’s Professor).

Below you’ll find an FAQ plus links to archive movies with Mark and Chris that talk you through the functionality of the tool and even the methods that go into building and maintaining it week on week.

Rate My Team – Under the Hood

What is Rate My Team?

Rate My Team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves.

The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking and defensive rating and every player a probability of playing a given match, with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

What are these values based on?

The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data.

When generating the player values, the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient – factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions are taken into account and fed into the algorithm.

How can it help me?

If you’re a member, you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next ‘X’ number of Gameweeks. You have a players’ table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort by value to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Once the season starts, Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL line-up, recommend captains, vice-captains, your bench and order of substitutes and allow you to model your future transfers.

        Because he's 1m more?

And because of how strong Jota was in the 2nd half of the season when Wolves altered their formation.

Also he's just played in the Gold Cup final today. Then Europa starts very soon. He'll be fatigued and might get limited minutes early doors. Jota's had a good rest though.

Frank has already said he knows Kante's best position (which would be middle of a three man midfield) so can assume Jorginho would get the LCM or RCM position surely?

No RLC (injury) leaves Barkley, Kovacic and Drinkwater as his competition for one of the two places?

If he signs a new contract, which he's expected to soon, he's going to get minutes. Can actually see him nabbing David Silva's place long term, but for now, its a wait and see.

You just do the draft then it's erased from time. I don't see point unless you are new to it and want to know how it works beforehand..It's not rocket science anyway. Draft is pointless unless you can actually win some cash or somthing. Can't belive we lost UFPL for it

So.…. Looking at all the info so far and focusing on value for money and the fixture difficulty, this is my assumptions overall.

    The fixtures tell us that
Liverpool, Man City and Everton look amazing early on
Bournemouth and Brighton also looking decent.

My squad will focus primarily on these assets.

    GK -
It's either big or small here, lots of 4.5 options from previous years are now 5.0. this leads us to either go for City or Liverpool keepers (but that wastes plus a 4.0, or to seek a value choice.

It seems 8.5 for Ryan and his understudy is the obvious choice......

My Choice - Ryan and Button

    DEF -
Liverpool Defenders look a no brainer, but you'll probably want Salah (more of that later), so it's two from VVD, Robertson and TAA - given VVD is 0.5 cheaper, I think he has to take one of the spaces

Everton finished strong in defence and Digne and Coleman look great options.

City Defence is also a good option, but rotation always an issue, Mendy looks great (if he plays) but Laporte has more security of starts. Is walker worth a punt?

IF we assume we've picked 4 already, then we need a cheaper defender. This season the 5-6 million bracket is full of players offering poor value vs those mentioend above, and the 4.0 bracket are unlikely to start, therefore we are looking at the 4.5 level for our 5th defender.... Which really seems to be leaning towards a bournemouth defender or maybe brighton or just a solid starter. I've currently got Lacaselles pencilled in but not convinced.

So my defence at the moment is
Robertson, VVD, Coleman, Mendy, Lacaselles/Duffy/Random Bmouth Defender or a 4.0

MID - Two names scream out at my for my big hitters - Salah (mane isn't cheaper enough to worth thinking about) and Sterling (offers better potential than Aguero), although KDB is interesting also.

Mid range offers us up - Siggy/Richarlison, Bilva, Zaha/Mili, Fraser
(Im also tempted to have KDB, but it would mean losing a 8.0 option for him and downgrading a 5th defender to a 4.0)

if you want four of the above, then you will need a 4.5 bench option - Stevens, Dendonker, Romeu etc....

    5-6 million pool looks horrid

ATT - Given all of the above i have no money left for strikers, that said..... I'm comfortable with that. Lots of value available up front with

King (surely in lots of our squads)
Jota/Jimenez - I wont be picking them but good value there, but fixtures put me off
DCL - at 6.0 and Everton's fixtures, he is in my starting XI

I don't like Aguero (Sterling seems a better choice), Vardy - decent but too expensive for my squad, Auba / Kane - I want to see form first.

Absolutely nothing of interest below 6.5 for me other than DCL, I tend to steer clear of promoted sides early on.

So overall what have I missed? Chelsea players cheap but not 100% confident of them, Arsenal the same, as a UTD fan, I'm steering clear until I see some form.

Current squad (ever evolving) therefore is

    GK - Ryan, Button
DEF - Robertson, VVD, Mendy, Coleman
MID - Salah, Sterling, KDB, Zaha
    ATT - King, DCL

Bench - Button, Kelly, Dendonker, Greenwood (I know but he is cheap)
(KDB, Zaha, Kelly could become Siggy, Bilva and Lacaselles)

The lengthy message deserves responses for sure. I see lots of teams with 2 cheap forward options but I can't get myself to commit to it. I just think having one of Kane, Auba or Aguero (even Vardy or Laca to an extent) gives a better structure to my team. The first 3 named will more than likely score 20+ goals this season. If each start well, it could tear up the template quite early

I agree with this. Not convinced by the rotating Salah/Sterling captaincy, which gives you a run of NOR, sou, ARS or bou. I think a premium forward gives you a bit more flexibility, but it'll be interesting to see how it pans out.

Agree, having Kun enables moves for Kane etc if they take off whereas three budget fwds blocks the strategy without likely hits

Also, the premium strikers are expected to score against the top teams. If I see Kane away to Man City, it doesn't make me want to make a transfer to bring in mid priced striker with a good home fixture. I can understand 100% why people want both Salah and Sterling plus 4 premium defenders. But getting a premium forward in will be no easy task once the season is underway

Good thinking, I mostly agree with it. I think with S&S your captaincy is covered as are your goal-scorers, so I'm comfortable with no premium strikers too.

The rotation should generally work over the first 8, it's just GW's 2 and 3 where I think there are better alternatives, with say Aubameyang (BUR) followed by Kane (NEW).

@AVFC82 - any other suggestions for captain rotations, I'll be honest and admit I'd not even looked at that aspect yet. That said Salah and Sterling combo would rotate as follows IMO

          NOR
          sou
          bou
          BHA
          nor
          WAT

It's generally really strong, it's just sou / bou I'm not convinced on, and getting the strongest start possible is so important. I'll probably go with Aubemayang and switch to Kane GW3... which would give me a run of NOR, BUR, NEW... need to look into it further tho.

PEP PIG - I agree, but I do prefer Sterling to Aguero, so that decision is done, Kane I don't trust early on, Vardy I like, but I like my premium defenders and mids more.

Feels like there are a number of ways to go this year. I mean Kane and Vardy are also well priced. Could Firmino also be a good choice?

I don't think it's a risk pal. Especially as many FPL players use the early WC. If pick the players who you expect to score the most points. From a personal perspective, I don't want to blow my WC early this season so that's why I will be starting with a premium forward

I don't know if I'm being biased being a WH fan but we face only three of last seasons top six in our opening 12 fixtures. Surely a pick of Diop/Balbuena is better at 4.5 than a Lascelles pick?

Keep coming back to the same draft... my only worry is no premium striker but sterling and Salah seem too good to go without!

    Ryan
    TAA Robbo Walker Digne
    Salah Sterling Siggy Zaha
    King Jota

Button Dendoncker Nketiah Kelly (trash basically!)

Strikers still up for grabs but there seems a lot of options in that price bracket to jump on and could be early badmwagons emerging there like che Adam's or wesley.

I know it's quite template and a long way to go but what do you think are the main problems with this team?

It's excellent - with S&S you really don't need a premium striker - it would unbalance a fine squad.
My only concern is you've only got Donkers to come off the bench. I'd want the security of 2 playing defenders and I'd do that by TAA or Robbo > VVD or Digne > Coleman.

Anyone going for a more premium keeper- 5.5 for lloris looks very nice, but everyone seems to be going for 4.5 options for set and forget. I don’t think Brighton have a good enough defence for that, especially being more attacking under potter. I know these keepers save money but they are more likely to keep clean sheets

With that being said, why are people going for these keepers?

Too expensive. Even Murray at 6.0 delivered more points last season.

I think this is as good as it gets for the next few weeks...

    Ryan
    TAA Digne Laporte VVD
    Salah Sterling Siggy Zaha
    Deulefeu King

    4.0 4.0 4.5 4.5

    Ryan/Heaton/Pope still could change
Deulefeu or Deeney an option still

Really hoping for Maguire to City to free up 1M instead of Laporte

    A) Robbo / DCL

    B) VVD / Deulofeu

    I have TAA and Salah.
    Thanks guys.

A imo. Robbo outscored VVD by a bit more than last season imo.

Any PL-club intrested in som Jansson magic? He seems to be persona non grata in Leeds if the Swedish tabloids are correct (which they almost never are...).

Best City option in defence from there 4 players?

    A Laporte
B Walker plus .5 m to spend elsewhere
C Zinchenko plus 1 m to spend elsewhere

We won't know if Zinky's a starter for a while. The other two are secure.

In all the usual excitement of watching highlights of transfer targets (in my case Maxi Gomez), it has to be said what caught my eye was Iago Aspas (his more prolific strike partner). The guy's record at Celta Vigo is amazing. Shame he failed in England and can't remember what happened there.

I think it would actually be a sound strategy to get one in at that price point knowing the other can slot in easily enough if you feel it went wrong. Are you getting another city attacker?

Yes Raheem Sterling absolutely nailed in my team. As is Laporte.

I'd upgrade Wesley to either Jota or Deulo and play 4-4-2. I also prefer Perez to Brooks.

I'm between Wesley and Jota atm, I like Wesley as they have nice early fixtures and it allows me to have another playing sub. I will play 442 most weeks. Plan to switch to Perez maybe GW2
