Use Rate My Team to help build your FPL squad in 2019/20

Our Rate My Team tool has been updated over the weekend and is now available to use in our Members’ Area.

Access to this feature requires membership, which is now available for the yearly price of £17.50. Registered users can upgrade their accounts via this link, while new users can register as members here.

For full details on all the benefits of membership, view this page.

Former FPL champions Tom Fenley and Simon March have said Rate My Team was a helpful tool to use in their successful seasons.

Subscribers can use the RMT feature by clicking on ‘Build My Team’ from the ‘Rate My Team’ drop-down menu.

Once the 2019/20 campaign is underway, members will be able to enter their Fantasy Premier League team ID and see what scores RMT projects for the coming Gameweek and beyond.

We will be tweaking the numbers on a regular basis over the summer as new players enter the game and pre-season friendlies reveal more to us about likely starting line-ups and tactics.

The ‘Projections’ tab will also be updated in due course.

A members-only Hot Topic has already been set up by Geoff for you to discuss your first impressions and bring to light any oddities you may discover.

The projections are based on the Rate My Team statistical model, developed by Chris Atkinson (aka RMT’s Professor).

Below you’ll find an FAQ plus links to archive movies with Mark and Chris that talk you through the functionality of the tool and even the methods that go into building and maintaining it week on week.

Rate My Team – Under the Hood

What is Rate My Team?

Rate My Team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves.

The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking and defensive rating and every player a probability of playing a given match, with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

What are these values based on?

The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data.

When generating the player values, the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient – factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions are taken into account and fed into the algorithm.

How can it help me?

If you’re a member, you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next ‘X’ number of Gameweeks. You have a players’ table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort by value to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Once the season starts, Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL line-up, recommend captains, vice-captains, your bench and order of substitutes and allow you to model your future transfers.

      Pickford
      Robertson TAA Digne Zinchenko
      Salah KDB Siggy Fraser
      Wilson Jota

      Button; Dendocker, Xande Silva, Reid

Very good squad - bench too weak. I'd upgrade Reid to a sure starter. Can shave 0.5 off Digne > Coleman or get VVD.

Thanks for your input. The bench spots are just temporary placeholders until better low-budget options arise.

Salah > Mane or Fraser > Brooks
Allows Reid > Diop/Balbuena (sure starters) and Zinc > Walker or bank the 0.5

Greenwood better placeholder than Xande Silva purely because he's more likely to start in general. Nice team though. Alternatively as below, ditch Robbo/TAA (Robbo for me) to VVD

    Rate my team:
    Ryan

      I quite like it...
Ideally playing 3-4-3 you’d want a playing 4.5 defender on your bench and I’d change Norris > Button as you’ve got Ryan in goal.

6/10. I think Jorginho is the only weak link. Perhaps, you could look at a much better option at his price. Jorginho rarely gets goals or assists. There are better goalscoring defensive mids than him.

@Pep Pig - Stay away from Chica, we said he could leave this summer and we're looking at Maxi Gomez. Regarding Anderson I have him in from GW1 (bench, coming in from GW2) but Yarmolenko could be a good shout, if you want I'll list you a huge discussion me and a few WH fans had on a post from yesterday

@ScubaSmithy - It's not a bad shout, definitely worth monitoring. Even Fredricks is basically guaranteed RB starting position (4.5) given Zabaleta's age.

@AVFC82 - You picked any WH players up yet?

So based on rate my team, I am thinking.....

    Schmeichael (Leicster)
Adam Smith (Bournemouth) Cathcart (Wolves) Kiko Ferminia (Wolves)
Fraser (Bournemouth) Sterling (Man City) Mane (Liverpool) Salah (Liverpool) De Bruyne (Man City)
    Wickham (Palace) Fraser (Bournemouth)

    Bench
Ryan (Brighton), Dann (Palce), Kelly (Palace), Nketiah (Arsenal)

What do people think? Feedback is appreciated.

I think not have a lpool full back will be killer, potentially turn mane into one of robbo or taa. With one of your wolves Def and then bring on someone like siggy or mads

Also you've mentioned Fraser twice, is it Wilson or king upfront.

        sorry i meant king
with you mention taa and mads (being a newcastle fan, bias has made me go for perez)
        would this be better:

        schmeichael
        smith robertson holebas
fraser sterling salah perez de bruyne
        ings king

        Bench:
        Ryan, Cathcart, Dann, Wickham

    Ederson (button)

    TAA Robbo Digne Azpi (Kelly)

    Salah KDB Perez Noble (Dendonk)

    Kane, King (Greenwood)

    A) Digne, Kdb, Greenwood
    B) Coleman, Zaha/Maddison, Jimenez (noble moves to bench)

    Any help appreciated!

Your team for the most part is good. I think you can downgrade one of those players, maybe KDB for Bernardo, and use those funds to get a promising 4th midfielder for 6.0 and above instead of Noble. Noble is a very poor option if you consider the possibility that even Fornals or Obiang or Wilshere can play in that position alongside Rice.

Cheers was thinking maybe Anderson and zaha with 0.5 to upgrade Kelly to a definite starter so I have a bit more leeway if someone throws up a curve ball in week 1.

For now I would be totally against buying Zaha unless he gets his wish to join Arsenal. He doesn't seem happy to continue at Palace. You wouldn't want a demotivated player.

    Rate my team please

    Heaton (Button)
    Taa-Mendy-Lascelles (Diop, Reid)
    Salah-Kdb-Siggy-Perez-Zaha
    Kane-King (Wickham)

You'd get a West Ham defender GW1 if Mendy is benched...

I would downgrade KDB or Kane to get better backline and more balanced team...

    Ryan

    Ake Robbo VVD Digne

    Fraser Salah KDB Zaha Perez

    Kane

Any problems with this team? Only thing I can think of is no Sterling but can’t get them all and KDB may well be up with him if fit

Zaha could be a problem if he doesn't get his dream move. You wouldn't want an unhappy player not motivated to play for his current club.

I for one am very excited about the Tielemans signing for Leicester. He helped me out a lot during his loan spell last season as a major differential. Leicester have got to be in with a shout for 7th, maybe even 6th or higher?!

The only issue i see is that anyone in Leicester can potentially haul. Kind of frustrating!

Prefer the Vardy or non-Vardy team? Leaning toward the former as more comfortable than having 6.5 6.5 4.5 forward line...
    1.
    Heaton (Button)
    TAA VVD Digne ZINCHENKO (Kelly)
    Salah Sterling ZAHA (Dendoncker Romeu)
    VARDY King Deulofeu
    — zaha could be any 7.0 mid, vvd digne could be Robbo Coleman, or digne Zinchenko could be ake Laporte etc...

    2.
    Heaton (Button)
    TAA ROBERTSON Digne LAPORTE (Kelly)
    Salah Sterling SIGURDSSON PEREZ (Dendoncker)
    King Deulofeu (Greenwood)

Tielemans to Leicester has all cemented vardy in my side think Leicester are gonna have a really good season offensively but feel Maguire has agreed to leave as to why they’ve spent 75 million on 2 players.

Any idea if Adam Smith is nailed at BOU? The 0.5 saved in picking him over Ake goes a long way.
