Use Rate My Team to help build your FPL squad in 2019/20

Our Rate My Team tool has been updated over the weekend and is now available to use in our Members’ Area.

Access to this feature requires membership, which is now available for the yearly price of £17.50. Registered users can upgrade their accounts via this link, while new users can register as members here.

For full details on all the benefits of membership, view this page.

Former FPL champions Tom Fenley and Simon March have said Rate My Team was a helpful tool to use in their successful seasons.

Subscribers can use the RMT feature by clicking on ‘Build My Team’ from the ‘Rate My Team’ drop-down menu.

Once the 2019/20 campaign is underway, members will be able to enter their Fantasy Premier League team ID and see what scores RMT projects for the coming Gameweek and beyond.

We will be tweaking the numbers on a regular basis over the summer as new players enter the game and pre-season friendlies reveal more to us about likely starting line-ups and tactics.

The ‘Projections’ tab will also be updated in due course.

A members-only Hot Topic has already been set up by Geoff for you to discuss your first impressions and bring to light any oddities you may discover.

The projections are based on the Rate My Team statistical model, developed by Chris Atkinson (aka RMT’s Professor).

Below you’ll find an FAQ plus links to archive movies with Mark and Chris that talk you through the functionality of the tool and even the methods that go into building and maintaining it week on week.

Rate My Team – Under the Hood

What is Rate My Team?

Rate My Team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves.

The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking and defensive rating and every player a probability of playing a given match, with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

What are these values based on?

The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data.

When generating the player values, the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient – factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions are taken into account and fed into the algorithm.

How can it help me?

If you’re a member, you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next ‘X’ number of Gameweeks. You have a players’ table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort by value to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Once the season starts, Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL line-up, recommend captains, vice-captains, your bench and order of substitutes and allow you to model your future transfers.

The Dilemma of our GW1 Squad

Played this FPL format and nearly every season this here GW1 well and truly does my head in.
My initial squad changes over and over again .......

What formation to start with ???
How many or which Pool / City players to go with ?
Siggy/Richarlison/Digne/Colman or even DCl from the toffees ?
Do I pick Kane or end up with a budget forward 3 ?
Can Vardy still cut the mustard ?
Is Maddison and the newly signed Perez gonna hit the ground running ?
Can a budget Cherries pick help enable those big hitters ?
Do I keep a bench that can play just in case the starting XI don’t actually all play ?
Do I actually keep some money in the bank just in case ?

The ever growing need or necessity for a decent GW1 so at least you have a base to build on so our dream of being crowned FPL Champion 2019/20 .

I think I will but I’ll probably not - just leave that working XV until a week before kick off then hopefully be content with that tricky GW1 that I’ll end up with !

A lot of your questions are out of your control, like how well players are going to perform from the beginning of the season. That's why in my opinion, starting out with players with a track record of starts and performances across the season is safer. Bargain hunting works a lot better later in the season.

At the start, I'm going to lean picking a Van Dijk over a Gomez or a Laporte over a Zinchenko if I can, and then make the downgrade if a trend appears later.

As much as I'd love to have the likes of Gomez and Zinchenko in from the start, I have to admit that this really is the truth. Good comment.

This is the exact reason why I'm picking people like Richar over Siggy and tempted to avoid Kane in August regardless of how difficult it may be to get a premium striker in at a later date.

"starting out with players with a track record of starts"
KUNTHEMAN said this. So I am saying Richar has a record of a better start than Siggy. I also feel that with only DCL/Tosun up top at the moment and then Richar may play OOP striker again. Also with Digne on more set pieces that also takes away from Siggy's potential points.

Currently leaning towards a couple of playable bench players plus money in bank - actually finding it quite doable. A little compromise of course but the greater good is avoiding an early WC imo and being able to move in week 3.

So, given Evertons prime first 6 fixtures of palace, watford, villa, wolves, cherries and sheffield, Surely there is merit in having both rich and siggy?

Injuries etc aside, they are both reasonably nailed, in front of a solid defence and can both score (just as well with dcl up front...)

Both showed form last season. Plus easily downgraded to any emerging 7/6.5m form midfielder (e.g. Perez)

My watchout is KDB - if he gets enough minutes/form then he would be straight in for rich and siggy along with a 6.5m midfielder

How prime are those fixtures? Everton don’t as yet have a cutting edge forward and were only moderately productive last time around.

The double up feels s bit indecisive to me. Haven’t checked but they don’t have a record of assisting each other as per Wilson Fraser do they?

Could work of course. I’m contemplating a City treble up in attack!!!

I love all four players but ... just do a quick search on Jota's xGI over the last 10 GWs of last season and compare them to, well, anyone you like. All four of those players are potentially under-priced but one of them hugely. If you're a stats-man, should make things easier.

I don't think 3 bench players who play is essential.

    TAA, Robbo, Cathcart,

    Bilva, Salah (c), Siggy, Townsned

    Kane, King, Deeney

    (Button), (Dunk), (Kelly), (Dendonkey)

    Analysis:

Ederson --> Consistent GK guarenteed points
    TAA/Robbo --> no brainers
Cathcart/Dunk--> Good first few fixtures - Will be rotated

Bilva --> Bargain at £8m, certain starter, has goals + assists in him
Salah --> Again, no brainer --> VAR will provide him with more penalties
Siggy --> Wicked fixtures --> Penalty Taker
Townsend --> My cheap punt --> greedy - loves to shoot - decent first 2 fixtures
Kane --> First game v Villa = Big points potential (May switch to Auba GW2 v Burnley)
King --> Good fixtures --> Penalty Taker
Deeney--> Good Fixtures --> Penalty Taker (edges Deulofeu just)

            • 14 Years

Yeah, Yarmo is a placeholder for now - and I too have reservations so totally agree there (although he has huge upside if fit - similar to Ings)

Coleman is beyond locked, he not only outscored Digne from less games in 2019, he outscored SIGGY from less games in 2019 🙂 he finally looked to be recovering from that leg break, and if Gueye stays Everton should stay solid defensively - I think Coleman will have people scrambling to get him personally, can’t wait to own him.

Agree the team is big at the back, but it’s totally intentional - personally I find the mid price forwards & midfielders so underwhelming this season - and by contrast we have been blessed with the single greatest lineup of defenders that has ever been available in any FPL season, period.... I feel it would be rude not to take advantage 🙂

But interestingly the FFS poll on the right of the page suggests less than 10% intend to play a back 5 this season, so I totally acknowledge I’m in the minority here 🙂

i like it a lot. you've got a lot of the best value picks in there plus two strong captaincy options. However, downgrading Salah to a mid priced midfielder (i.e. fraser/siggy/perez/zaha) allows you to turn laporte into vvd, henderson to ederson and vardy to Kane -- thereby significantly increasing points per match per million whilst retaining two very strong captaincy options.

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 14 Years
        4 years, 9 months ago

Yep good thoughts, and I did tinker with Kane instead of Salah, but I’m hugely bullish on Mo this season to be honest - if he even slightly improves on that 15% goal conversion statistic from last season, he’s going to be up near 300 again this year

I’m not a huge fan of Kane for FPL overall, although his odd-week fixtures are nice, as is his price tag

Vardy is another non-negotiable for me... he was scarily good on the eye test under Rodgers, and delivered the FPL points too in fairness!

All depends on how Leicester set up with perez. Will it work? Will his minutes be managed? Hopefully we will know more soon

When you scratch into Zaha’s record it was quite concerning when Bats wasn’t on the pitch

From memory something like 11 of his 21 attacking returns came in the 10 games bats played, with Zaha only delivering 10 attacking returns in the other 25 games he played

Bats I don’t think will be back at palace, and as of yet they haven’t signed a striker - I worry for them personally after losing AWB as well... similar to Siggy, Zaha is another mid price mid I’m just not feeling the love for.

But no doubt he could do well of course

I dont know how they rotate, but try Diop, Dunk and Lascelles. You might be okay. Hammers the weaker link i think

    Ederson
    TAA VVD Walker Digne
    Salah Sterling Zaha Perez
    King Deulofeu
    Button Dendonker Dunk Greenwood

      Interesting. Similar to mine.

However, tbh I consider that Siggy’s upside over Zaha is more expressive than Ederson’s upside over Ryan, for example.

That would be the main change I would make. Otherwise seems great!

It can be interesting to monitor Norwood @ 5.0 imo. Despite being part of a promoted team that will likely struggle, I still think he’ll continue to be highly involved in their attacking processes. Set piece taker. I can see him assisting a lot, shooting a lot too

There could be real value in one of them. Put it this way would you rather have one of them or a 5/4.5m defender?

Neves. I think because he's still quite young, he can develop his game further. He takes very good set pieces himself and was partly on penalties.

O'Connell is going to be an absolute bargain at his price. For anyone interested in a 3 way rotation for one spot try out
O'Connell + Taylor + Diop.. Gives you SOU, CRY, LEI, NOR, SOU, NOR, avl, CRY over the first 8. Again this is 3 4.5 defenders rotating to play 1 spot in your team. Bonus is they also give you a good bench every week. That is if you believe O'Connell has the potential to be this seasons doherty, and that Burnley and West ham can keep a CS in a few of their easy home games

I know most ppl will dismiss this.. But.. This season with no 4.0 defenders and no 4.5 forwards it looks like the ideal way to get a decent bench without wasting money with a 3 4 3 (with 2 pool defenders of course)

Prefer the Vardy or non-Vardy team? Leaning toward the former as more comfortable than having 6.5 6.5 4.5 forward line...
    1.
    Heaton (Button)
    TAA VVD Digne ZINCHENKO (Kelly)
    Salah Sterling ZAHA (Dendoncker Romeu)
    VARDY King Deulofeu
    — zaha could be any 7.0 mid, vvd digne could be Robbo Coleman, or digne Zinchenko could be ake Laporte etc...

    2.
    Heaton (Button)
    TAA ROBERTSON Digne LAPORTE (Kelly)
    Salah Sterling SIGURDSSON PEREZ (Dendoncker)
    King Deulofeu (Greenwood)

That’s the main reason I strayed from my original team (2) and made team 1.

Really it’s a case of, bearing the rest of the team in mind:

Zinchenko VVD Zaha Vardy vs Laporte Sigurdsson Perez Robertson...

Neither appeals too much to me to be fully honest. I really don't rate Deulofeu or King, so they turn me off both options. I guess 2 has the better backline and a solid midfield on top of that, so I'd prefer it marginally to 1.

I tell you what though, Heaton is a lovely pick.

Thanks mate. What big changes would you make?

Got King as a cheaper Wilson alternative as BOU have good fixtures, as do Watford hence the Deulofeu pick. The reason I stuck Vardy in there too, though, was because I wasn’t too sure on just relying on those two forwards!

All this balanced Team talk will go away once gw1 begins.. Balance is a myth in my opinion..We have seen by many that 5-4-1 is as effective as 3-4-3 and thats just how FPL works.. Pick the right players (including a couple of captain-able players) and you will do just fine.

You always have a WC to sort it out if things go really badly at the start... If you play "SAFE" by copying the template you will never be at the top.. The people who end up having any chance of being at the top are differential sides.. So if you want to just be mid-table by gw3 follow the template.. if you want to have a slim chance at winning it then take a few risks at the start.. WC to fix it and go back to SAFE as it failed and you wont have lost much in a few gws and you would have data to supports picks by that point..

      Absolutely.

Balance and flexibility is a pile of dog turd and always has been.

Worst case scenario, you are never more than a couple of hits away from any player.

The one thing I'm sure of is everyone is going to kneejerk and break apart their expensive defenses when one sub 5 defender gets a 15 pointer and a expensive forward goes berserk and when son returns. All this talk about money in defense required patience with 2 pointers and not many have that

If you can only pick 2:
    A) Robbo
    B) TAA
    C) VVD

Was on the two fullbacks but leaning towards VVD alongside Trent to save 0.5... could be used for stuff like Laporte over Mendy, Digne over Coleman etc

Hate to say that though, as I love Robertson 😆

      I’ve gone VVD and TAA

The latter has better ppg and the former may very well crack on with a couple more goals this season, great for baps too

That’s what I’m thinking. Robbo also great for BAPS (outscored VVD last season) and obviously assists but vvd goal threat is immense, chipped in with 4 assists alongside his 4 goals last season and is about as nailed as you can get

The full backs for me - just for consistency of returns. VVD may well almost match Robbo again but I see Robbo getting the points in on a more regular basis. He feels more likely to be returning before first WC
