Use Rate My Team to help build your FPL squad in 2019/20

Our Rate My Team tool has been updated over the weekend and is now available to use in our Members’ Area.

Access to this feature requires membership, which is now available for the yearly price of £17.50. Registered users can upgrade their accounts via this link, while new users can register as members here.

For full details on all the benefits of membership, view this page.

Former FPL champions Tom Fenley and Simon March have said Rate My Team was a helpful tool to use in their successful seasons.

Subscribers can use the RMT feature by clicking on ‘Build My Team’ from the ‘Rate My Team’ drop-down menu.

Once the 2019/20 campaign is underway, members will be able to enter their Fantasy Premier League team ID and see what scores RMT projects for the coming Gameweek and beyond.

We will be tweaking the numbers on a regular basis over the summer as new players enter the game and pre-season friendlies reveal more to us about likely starting line-ups and tactics.

The ‘Projections’ tab will also be updated in due course.

A members-only Hot Topic has already been set up by Geoff for you to discuss your first impressions and bring to light any oddities you may discover.

The projections are based on the Rate My Team statistical model, developed by Chris Atkinson (aka RMT’s Professor).

Below you’ll find an FAQ plus links to archive movies with Mark and Chris that talk you through the functionality of the tool and even the methods that go into building and maintaining it week on week.

Rate My Team – Under the Hood

What is Rate My Team?

Rate My Team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves.

The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking and defensive rating and every player a probability of playing a given match, with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

What are these values based on?

The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data.

When generating the player values, the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient – factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions are taken into account and fed into the algorithm.

How can it help me?

If you’re a member, you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next ‘X’ number of Gameweeks. You have a players’ table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort by value to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Once the season starts, Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL line-up, recommend captains, vice-captains, your bench and order of substitutes and allow you to model your future transfers.

A really expensive defence could be a complete disaster

If you tie up cash in 6 premium players it’ll take some moves to shift it forwards

    6
    7 7 6.5 6 5.5

Seen a few teams like this and just think it’s got WC written all over it

But they give great value over the course of an entire season; thankfully FFS managers have so much patience in them returning over a longer period than one week so a few blanks that won't matter.

Yep no knee jerking as soon as pool and city let a couple slip

I agree on the value but 2prem 3mid value is enough for me

This is true. I’m currently on something like:

      4.5
      7 6.5 6.5 5.5 4.0

And still think I’m spending too much lol

Yeah, I prefer the more balanced approach, I've got something similar with:

        4.5 4.0
        7.0 7.0 6.0 4.5 4.0

Folks planning to go with a 6.5 6.5 4.5 frontline...

Are you not worried about not even having someone like Vardy at his pricepoint? Feels a bit risky having a frontline of King Deulofeu fodder, way less so (for me) than sacrificing a mid to PLAYING fodder to get Vardy in?

I’ve got two teams, one with Vardy one without, posted on the last page (or can be found in my comment history)

Good for thought, and just wondering what our justifications are?

Note: if going w/o Vardy I’ll almost definitely have Perez/Tielemans/Maddison

How long is Rudiger out for?
Could Christensen be an option for the start of the season?

For me, Chr is worth a GW1-2 punt, unless Zouma's in the squad.

Easiest way is Kane > Vardy, lose Zaha or Perez.
Otherwise, Kev > Bilva, Zaha > Rich
