FPL assets in action as Copa America and Gold Cup climax

Our regular round-ups of the international fixtures involving Fantasy Premier League assets continue.

There was Premier League representation in the finals of both the Copa America and Gold Cup, while there were also some familiar faces in action in the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations.

You can read how Sadio Mane (£11.5m) and Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) got on in their respective round-of-16 ties here.

Copa America

Brazil 3-1 Peru

Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) took centre stage as Brazil won their first Copa America since 2007.

The Manchester City striker has sometimes struggled to make a mark on the international scene but he has impressed for Selecao this summer and was once more influential in the opening 45 minutes of Sunday’s final.

Jesus, again lining up on the right flank but interchanging positions in the front three, produced some fine trickery and a superb cross for Everton to volley Brazil in front after quarter of an hour before restoring his country’s lead with a goal of his own just before the interval.

Jesus teed up Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) for presentable opportunities after half-time but his evening took a turn for the worse when he was dismissed for a second bookable offence on 70 minutes.

The tearful City forward took his frustration out on a water bottle, a dugout and a VAR monitor but later apologised for his actions, saying:

I want to apologise, I could have avoided it and I also need to grow up a lot.

Firmino has also shone in the Copa America this summer but the Liverpool striker was unable to add to his tally of two goals and three assists, twice heading wide and missing that aforementioned chance created by Jesus.

Firmino started all six of Brazil’s competitive matches this summer.

It was Firmino’s replacement in this game, Richarlison (£8.0m), who put the game to bed from the penalty spot in the dying stages.

Introduced for the Liverpool man with 15 minutes to go, Richarlison stepped up to convert from 12 yards after Everton had been barged over in the Peru box.

The Toffees’ winger’s only two starts in the tournament came in the group stage.

After five successive clean sheets, Alisson (£6.0m) was finally beaten but it took a 44th-minute penalty from Paolo Guerrero for the Liverpool custodian to eventually be breached.

Fernandinho (£5.5m) and Ederson (£6.0m) were unused substitutes while Willian (£7.0m), who had been a doubt for the final with a thigh injury, was also not called upon from the hosts’ bench.

Argentina 2-1 Chile

Alexis Sanchez (£7.0m) lasted just 17 minutes of the Copa America third/fourth-place play-off on Saturday, limping from the field with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

The Manchester United winger pulled up chasing a long ball and was replaced soon after.

The Chilean attacker, who has impressed this summer after a less-than-stellar season at United, will now return to his club for further assessment.

The Red Devils are currently in Australia, with a match against Perth Glory to come on Saturday.

Chile fell to a 2-1 defeat in their talisman’s absence, with Lionel Messi and Gary Medel both being dismissed in the first half of a fiercely contested game.

Sergio Aguero (£12.0m) registered his second goal of the tournament in giving Argentina a 12th-minute lead, with the Manchester City striker latching on to a quickly taken Lionel Messi free-kick to round Gabriel Arias and score.

Aguero had earlier fired narrowly wide from distance and wasted two decent chances to put the game to bed late on, seeing a weak dink over Arias blocked and then screwing wide from just inside the Chile box.

The premium FPL forward was eventually substituted on 81 minutes.

Juan Foyth (£5.0m) and Nicolas Otamendi (£5.5m) again played the full 90 minutes in defence, while Roberto Pereyra (£6.0m) was an unused substitute.

The Watford winger played only 45 minutes in the entire tournament.

Gold Cup

Mexico 1-0 USA

Mexico were crowned CONCACAF Gold Cup winners for the eighth time after defeating the United States in the early hours of Monday morning.

It was no surprise to see the two pre-tournament favourites meet each other in the final in Chicago, although Mexico had made heavy work of getting past Costa Rica and Haiti en route to their meeting against the co-hosts.

Raul Jimenez (£7.5m) finished as the competition’s second-highest scorer on five goals but turned provider in yesterday’s final, teeing up Jonathan dos Santos with a deft backheel for the match-winning strike on 73 minutes.

The Wolves striker had five of Mexico’s 20 attempts on goal against the US but was unable to add to his tally for the tournament, scuffing one effort from just outside the six-yard box after earlier air-kicking from a similar distance.

Jimenez won the Golden Ball as he was named the tournament’s best player, having been involved in seven of his country’s 16 goals.

The Wolves striker started all six of Mexico’s Gold Cup matches and was substituted in only two of them.

The former Benfica striker played all 330 minutes in his country’s three matches after the group stage, with El Tri taken to extra-time in the quarter-finals and semi-finals.

Christian Pulisic (£7.5m) was on the losing side and finished the tournament with three goals to his name.

The Chelsea winger, starting on the left flank in this match, was lively in the opening stages and his best chance came after just five minutes when he was denied by Guillermo Ochoa after a fine run and close-range shot.

Pulisic again produced flashes of Eden Hazard-esque brilliance in this final and has been one of the tournament’s stand-out players; the former Borussia Dortmund midfielder was indeed voted the Best Young Player at this summer’s Gold Cup after full-time.

Pulisic started five of the USA’s six matches in the competition, also coming on as a substitute in the dead rubber against Panama in the group stage.

Africa Cup of Nations

Algeria 3-0 Guinea

Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m) scored a superb goal – his second of the tournament – as Algeria breezed through to the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals on Sunday.

Guinea were missing the injured Naby Keita (£6.0m) but the Liverpool midfielder is expected to be fit to begin his pre-season training programme with the club later this month after a post-tournament breather.

Keita played only two matches in the tournament – one as a substitute – and sustained a minor adductor strain during the group game against Nigeria.

Mahrez was peripheral in the first half of this round-of-16 tie but scored from his first shot of the game, deceiving his marker with a beautiful first touch to control an Ismael Bennacer cross before curling low past Ibrahim Kone in the Guinea goal.

Kone denied Mahrez a second soon after when blocking the Manchester City winger’s toe-poked effort.

The former Leicester City midfielder, playing in his usual right-wing role in this match, lasted the full 90 minutes.

Algeria face Ivory Coast in the quarter-finals on Thursday.

Mali 0-1 Ivory Coast

Wilfried Zaha‘s (£7.0m) stay in Egypt was extended by at least another three days as his Ivory Coast side edged past Mali in their round-of-16 encounter on Monday evening.

Having been a substitute for Les Elephants in their opening two group games, the Crystal Palace winger made his second successive start and scored the game’s only goal on 76 minutes.

Another FPL asset provided the assist for Zaha’s match-winning strike: Aston Villa forward Jonathan Kodjia (£5.5m) getting the faintest flick onto a long punt out from the back and setting Zaha free to prod the ball past Dijgui Diarra.

Kodjia had wasted a similar opportunity shortly before the goal and the lofted through-ball was a tactic Ivory Coast overly relied on as they struggled to get a foothold in the game.

Zaha’s side indeed didn’t have a single shot on target in the first three-quarters of Tuesday’s game.

The Palace winger, playing on the left flank as Kodjia led the line, struggled to make much of an impression and only had a couple of blocked shots to show for his efforts before breaking the deadlock.

More involved on the opposite flank, however, was Moussa Djenepo (£5.5m).

The pacy Southampton winger was a menace down the Mali left and drew several fouls, also teeing up Moussa Marega shortly before half-time with a pullback from the byline.

The Saints’ summer signing was too quick for his own good just after the break though, with Djenepo leaving the ball behind him as he closed in on opposition goalkeeper Sylvain Gbohouo just after the interval.

With Mali eliminated, the former Standard Liege midfielder will now return to Southampton for the latter stage of pre-season and should be in contention for Gameweek 1.

Having previously been fearful that a hamstring injury had ended his tournament, Serge Aurier (£5.0m) was back among the substitutes for Ivory Coast but wasn’t called upon.

Madagascar 2-2 DR Congo (4-2 Penalties)

Arthur Masuaku (£4.5m) was an unused substitute as DR Congo were dumped out of the Africa Cup of Nations by Madagascar.

The tournament’s surprise package won after a penalty shootout and will play Tunisia in the quarter-finals on Thursday.

Yannick Bolasie, still on the books at Everton but anticipated to leave this summer, was one of two players to miss a spot-kick for DR Congo.

Masuaku only played 90 minutes over the course of the tournament.

Ghana 1-1 Tunisia (4-5 penalties)

A Ghana side missing the injured Christian Atsu (£5.5m) were dumped out of the Africa Cup of Nations on Monday after a penalty shootout defeat to Tunisia.

The Newcastle United winger picked up a hamstring injury in the group stage match against Cameroon and has since returned to England for treatment.

    Hey Chaps,

    Good to be back!

How’s this gamesweek 1 team looking?
    Ederson,
    Digne, Alonso, TAA.
    Pereyra, Zaha, Richarlison, Mane.
    Ings, Wilson, Kane.

Well, it’s different. I assume the bench is all fodder?

For me, Kane first fixture and some subsequent ones are obviously good, but GW2 is city away... I’m now especially keen on Pereyra either tbh, and I’d really want a city attacker

    Ryan (Button)

    TAA / Robbo / Walker / Coleman

Salah / Sterling / Tielemans (dendonk / romeu)

    Vardy / King / Deulofeu

Having Salah, Sterling, Trent, Robertson and a City defenders makes me think I have good enough coverage for now

    Last season, Sterling & Mane

    DCL King 4.5

    Sterling/Mane - Captain rotation

Yeah it's good. I don't really like DCL, don't think he's all that when it comes to finishing. Could eat my words this season though. Has Siggy had his time? Is it worth looking at Richarlison. You could do with 1 standout striker IMO

I agree with that, but sometimes it's evident that a player can give huge returns when Mo/Raz have tricky fixtures.

I keep returning to Zinchenko. think he will start the season. Will see what C. Shield brings. As long as theres back up on the bench I dont see an issue.
Kiko is there for his opening fixtures. Leno could easily be Fabianski.

I don't think your defence is strong enough to have 1 striker

If you're happy with the above you should probably go for 442 with DCL playing

But there's funds in that team that could be spent elsewhere for a better striker perhaps like Vardy. Obvs try to keep TAA/Salah/Sterling at all costs

Keep going back to the same team

    Heaton
    TAA VVD Digne Zinchenko
    Salah Sterling Perez Jorginho
    Kane King

    Subs Kelly Dendoncker Greenwood

I know jorginho won't be popular, but he allows sterling, Salah and kane. Feels worth it to me and rest of team looks solid as long as Zinchenko ends up playing.

Love for Zin? I know he came right end of last year but Mendy and the new boy can effect him big time.

If Djenepo is nailed, what a gift he would be! Optimistically, Djenepo seems a very Hasenhuttl-esque player, so might be a very worthwhile punt.
Overall a very good team. DDG had one bad season and now everyone is spewing him out like bad food. If he returns to form, 5.5 is a steal.

I like that a lot. DDG obviously is someone you’ll be set on but his form is appalling. The 4 defenders are good enough to downgrade christ to a 4.5 (which will be enjoyable to see who fits your team best) and then look to upgrade Djenepo to one of the many interesting 6’s such as Yarmolenko, Barnes, Trossard, JWP etc.
Hope this passes some time, hope you’re doing okay mate

      Hello Sir 🙂
I hope you get well soon.
Re your team, ddg is expensive for his return's.
Pickford (can't believe I'm saying this 😀 ), Lloris better options.
      Defense is awesome.
      Midfield is good too.
Agreed with Tielemans remarks. Still gutted that Ed Woodward didn't even tried to get him.
      Like the Vardy inclusion.

Like your team overall but think you may lack © option outside Mo (Vardy is a good differential © though)

Wow! Give De Gea a break. Best you guys have had in the last 5 years. He will come back strong with a better defense.
Vardy there instead of Kane who distorted my side. Safe bet IMO.

        I don’t get Pickford call.

He had a really low save rate (in Ryan territory) and delete pens and he needs lots and lots of cs to compensate.

No one seems to love Fab right now but he’s almost bound to get 140 points again and with the manager now established there must be a fair chance of more cs and pens too could happen.

On my calculation he equals Ederson for value and it’s then just a matter of deciding how far a mill goes. Further than 0.5 for sure and a 4.5 keeper will need a blinder if you want to save 1.5

Great fixtures for Pickford which Fabianski doesn't have bro.
You'd get the 3 pointer taste from Fabianski that i got for better half of last season 😀
          He's good @ 4.5 & bad @5 imo

            Question

How did Pickford perform in those fixtures last year? Did he make a lot of pen saves? It’s cs or nothing with him!!

Fab is equivalent value at 5.0 as Ederson is at 6.0. Everyone has gone up 0.5 in goal.

I’m generally sceptical of great fixture runs with middling sides - most especially preseason - it can go any which way. Everton were only marginally ahead of WH by the end after all and I don’t see them as stronger this time,

The WH fixtures early on are not frightening at all to me.

Ha - was in and out of A and E in an unbelievable one hour this morning. Get better soon.

DDG over Pickford for sure but still prefer Lloris as Spurs imo offer greater stability at the back early on. Both are good for saves though.

Agree on Tielemans. But prefer single Leicester early on to see how things shake down. I’m aiming for a premium premium striker I can trade down on if need be. Moving down is so much easier - otherwise you could be in early WC territory.

      1. Eze Really?
        • 9 Years

All good points. Lloris was my other choice and still might change. Always used WC early through compulsive nature outside of last year, where I held on and failed.

          • 5 Years

I’m trying to avoid early WC in theory but suspect it won’t happen - you’re not the only compulsive here.

I’m modelling how I can make the logical switches in the first 5 weeks or so. But I’m hit happy typically and would think nothing of being minus 8 by week 5 - that makes a difference

As it stands the model I like most from this point of view is 4-4-2. That gives me a “joker” at the back in midfield and up front around 6.0 6.5. It becomes harder if I have two cheap forwards to move for early bolters

We are definitely singing from the same sheet today. I take hits too and enjoy it. It has always worked for me too apart from last year. I don't like my 2 forwards and always had the spare player a defender. I want 4 4 2 this year with a possible 5 at the back sometimes which could prove handy when clean sheets are more prominent in the early part of the season

        Ha

A fellow Digne sceptic. I had him early last time at 4. Something and only rarely regretted he was on my bench. I’m finding it really tough forking out 6.0 for him

Might change my tune if Everton buy a striker to bury chances. And nay of course regret this post!

More the game time worry when Son comes back and presuming Kane is also still fit.. So if it is a short term 2 game punt, I wouldn't want one of the games to be against City. If his place was secure then definitely a good pick.

This enables easy interchange if you have a player from these specific price points when a player emerges. I wrote a similar piece about this last year https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2018/07/19/key-player-price-points/
      if anyone wants to read....

Key prices where I've noticed a number of options are as follows.

Premium defender 6m+: fairly obvious, we all know about the Liverpool boys and with Digne, LaPorte and the Chelsea defenders (once Lampard's lineup becomes apparent) there are a number of excellent options at this price point. I'll be looking to include a minimum of 2 of these but quite possibly 3 or 4 heavy hitting defenders. This makes it easy to switch to another one and its easy to downgrade to cheaper alternatives to use cash elsewhere.

Mid price midfielders 6.5-8m: There are so many great options in this price bracket which could provide excellent value this season. The likes of Richarlison, Sigurdsson and Fraser require little introduction but the likes of Pulisic and Lucas Moura could also be set for break out seasons. There's a number of well priced Chelsea and Leicester options in this price bracket as well and I will be looking to include at least 2 of them in my gameweek 1 side (currently Siggy and Zaha)

Mid price strikers 6.5m: Again there are just so many options at this price! The likes of King, Deulofeu and Jota are already familiar names and perhaps Chris Wood and Barnes are currently flying a bit under the radar. The likes of Wesley and Che Adams could also emerge as value options in this price bracket. I will definitely have at least 1 and possibly 2 strikers from this mid price bracket, there are so many options and being able to jump on the right ones as quickly as possible seems a great option.

Which price points are jumping out at you so far? Is this a viable strategy to start the season by ensuing you have sufficient cover of different prices to start the season? (Disclaimer: I had my best ever start last season using a similar strategy, focusing on areas where I thought there were a plethora of options and being able to adjust when the likes of Fraser and Wilson emerged, I did go for King over Wilson but you get the idea!)

Interested to hear everyone's thoughts 🙂

6m midfielders are very interesting to me and anyone going salah and sterling. Lots of cool potentially great options when Janes and CHO can nail a place. In the meantime there are some interesting options with good starts like yarmolenko, Trossard, JWP who can be swapped out when the form one starts shining

Agreed, although there are few known entities at that price point. It will be interesting to see which of the new signings you mentioned make the biggest impact! Do you think covering these potential prices makes sense?

I agree. Flexibility in the GW1 squad helps if you aren't the very patient type

Siggy, Tielemans/Brooks/Perez (unsure), King, Wesley (bench) and Yarmo are all there due to the ease of jumping on and off without WC

Starting the season with Salah, Sterling, Robbo and TAA, but willing to let one of the full backs go to boost the unsure 6.5 midfield slot to Son/someone in GW3 if I see a need to switch to 3-5-2 with Wesley starting. Same goes for Digne + Coleman

Ryan can become anyone in GW4 as well. Scared of what might happen if another 4.5 keeper emerges early on, because Ryan's price will drop as he's highly owned but not expected to appease many owners. Monitoring the Burnley situation. Might go with their keeper instead to start off with, if I'm sure who that is

      Thoughts on this squad structure.

      4.5GK 4.5GK
      Robbo Laporte Digne 4.5Def 4.5Def
      Salah Sterling Maddison Bilva 4.5mid
      DCL King 4.5FWD

1.5itb For Bilva to Son when he comes back from his ban.
Haven't decided what on my 4.5 players yet.

It's a decent set up. I wouldn't bother leaving money in the bank though. Just spend the 100million.

Does Kyle Walker have any competition for his place? Don't see him in many teams. He kept pace with Laporte comfortably last season until Laporte scored a couple near the end.

Remember last year when you played what looked like a 442 but actually had Dalot on the wing. That’s what I mean, with AWB playing as that 3rd CB/RB

Oh right I see what you mean. I feel as though Dalot wasn’t really trusted so AWB will just play as an out and out right back now that we have James on the wing too as we didn’t really have a rw last season

Would compliment jimi perfectly I would have thought, Jimmy works hard stretching the pitch, creating space. Costa will be the one who abuses the space. If teams try and mark costa out then jimmy can exploit it all the same. Would be probably the most deadly partnership in the league

Hey guys I'm kinda new to the site although been lurking for about 5 years now, anyway I finally made an account to find out what people think of my team and specifically - Heaton who is clearly the weak link. Do we know if Heaton is a sure starter for Burnley or could Pope be the one?
Any suggestions or feedback much appeciated, I think this is a very balanced team in terms of the dsitribution of funds and the teams represented, Thanks!

      Heaton (Button?)
Digne - Robertson - Azpil - Laporte (Kelly?)
      Bilva - Fraser - Salah(C) (Dendoncker, Hayden?)
      King - Jimenez - Kane(V)

Welcome. I think you need two Liverpool defs otherwise you will lose out every time they get a cs as most have two. I’d swop for Azpil and fund it by downgrading Fraser. Heaton has turned down a new contract and may be leaving but if he stays all will become clear before the season starts. Nice team

Thanks yea the Liverpool double is on my mind and its been in and back out many times.
My reasoning why its not there is:
I think when Mane and Firmino come back that I might want two Liverpool attackers so I was leaving the door open for that.
And IDK but my gut says Azpil will be a great differential.

I could do Fraser>Tielemans to fund TAA

Heaton arguing with bosses. Best keeper in the league IMO. lap of the Gods who plays though. Wait and see.
Kelly 50/50 for a spot so no.
Hayden week 2 will drop in price maybe due to high ownership. Dendonker good IMO.
Good side all round apart from risky keeper.
