Scout Notes

Coverage of pre-season matches commences

The Fantasy Premier League pre-season programme is about to kick into overdrive as we edge closer to Gameweek 1 of the new campaign.

Everton and Crystal Palace have already played their first matches (detailed below) and there are more to come in the next few days.

Fantasy managers are reminded to stay tuned into our pre-season page to get all the latest updates and talking points from the summer’s friendlies.

We will be producing Scout Notes articles regularly between now and Gameweek 1 on the matches played by the top-flight sides.

Not only will we be on the lookout for the next Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.5m), the Scout editorial team will be tracking pre-season minutes of every FPL asset.

That way, when we publish our predicted line-ups for Gameweek 1, they will be based on as much information given to us by the respective Premier League managers as possible.

We have already made a start on our spreadsheets which, this season, will be publicly available to you throughout the summer as we update them on a special page of its own.

For now, we have embedded the sheets below for all teams with a fixture between now and Sunday to give you a taster.

In order for desktop users to navigate these sheets, select the embedded window and use the arrow keys to scroll across.

Mobile users can simply drag the sheet across to navigate fully although we should point out that they are best viewed on a desktop device.

As already mentioned, Everton started us off on Saturday as they flew to Kenya for their first pre-season game.

Kariobangi Sharks 1-1 Everton (4-3 on penalties)

Everton began their pre-season campaign in Kenya

Goals: Joe Williams

As it was their first pre-season friendly it is hard to read too much into Everton’s 1-1 draw with Kariobangi Sharks over the weekend.

Only a handful of first-team players were involved for the Toffees as Marco Silva simply gave his players a run-out.

Lucas Digne (£6.0m), Gylfi Sigurdsson (£8.0m) and Jordan Pickford (£5.5m) were among the big names absent for Everton, while Richarlison (£8.0m) was busy winning the Copa America with Brazil.

Of those priced up by FPL for the new season, only Leighton Baines (£5.0m), Maarten Stekelenburg (£4.0m), Theo Walcott (£6.5m), André Gomes (£6.5m), Tom Davies (£5.5m), Morgan Schneiderlin (£4.5m) and Ademola Lookman (£5.0m) were involved against the Sharks.

All of them played no more than 45 minutes, with the latter featuring for just 15 as he went off with an injury.

Lookman left Kenya with the help of crutches after twisting his ankle against the Sharks and Everton confirmed afterwards that his knock would require a scan.

“Ademola Lookman will undergo a scan this afternoon after sustaining an ankle injury against Kariobangi Sharks.” – Everton press release

The performance against Kariobangi was by no means impressive, but that shouldn’t bother Fantasy managers at this point.

With Digne not back in pre-season training at the time, Baines started at left-back

As already mentioned, most of the key personnel were absent from the match-day squad while those who did play were still building up their fitness.

Nairobi, where the fixture took place, is also a high-altitude location, which would have made it harder for Everton’s players, just six days into pre-season training, to look as sharp as they will probably be when Gameweek 1 comes around.

Mason Holgate, not currently priced up by FPL, but with history on the game, had a particularly poor afternoon, looking especially off the pace and at fault for the Sharks’ opening goal.

Stekelenburg did not look in the kind of form to stand a chance of ousting Pickford from his number one spot as he was less than impressive.

Meanwhile, Jonas Lössl (still not priced by FPL) made his first appearance in an Everton shirt.

The Toffees were much better in the second half as youngster Joe Williams equalised from a free-kick but they still went on to lose on penalties.

12 months ago, Everton began pre-season with a 22-0 win against an unheard of European minnow – and the advice was not to read too much into it. The same should be said about this performance as there is still a long way to go.

Up next for Silva’s men is a trip to FC Sion on Sunday afternoon and with Digne, Pickford and Michael Keane (£5.5m) now back in training as of Tuesday, we could see more of a meaningful encounter in that one.

“It was good, a good experience. We’ve come out here and do what we were supposed to do which was more about fulfilling our obligations. The game at the end of a long week was a nice way to round it off. I enjoyed the short time we had out here. It was a good experience for the younger players to come out and good for the Kenyan lads as well. I’m sure that will be something that will stay with them. The game was a fun type of game and that’s what it was supposed to be.” – Leighton Baines

Everton XI: Stekelenburg (Lössl 45′); Baines (Robinson 45′), Connolly (Astley 45′), Gibson (Markelo 88′), Holgate (Feeney 72′); Davies (J Williams 45′), Schneiderlin (Baningme 45′), A Gomes (Adnerian 45′); Lookman (Broadhead 15′), Niasse (Hornby 45′), Walcott (Bowler 45′).

FC Luzern 1-1 Crystal Palace (5-6 on pens)

Roy Hodgson returned to the country where he made a name for himself in the 1990s

Goals: Christian Benteke (£6.0m)

Assists: Max Meyer (£5.5m)

In contrast to Silva, Roy Hodgson used the majority of his senior first-team players in Crystal Palace’s trip to FC Luzern in Switzerland.

Only five FPL assets were absent for the Eagles and most of them were not involved due either to injury or international duty.

Mamadou Sakho (£5.0m) and James Tomkins (£5.0m) are still sidelined with knocks sustained last season, while Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) and Cheikhou Kouyaté (£5.0m) are competing for Ivory Coast and Senegal respectively at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Vicente Guaita (£5.0m) was not in the match-day squad and, as yet, there has been no official explanation for his absence, but there’s still plenty of pre-season matches to play.

The match got off to a quick start as Christian Benteke (£6.0m), leading a 4-4-2 formation alongside Connor Wickham (£4.5m), opened the scoring in the second minute.

He rose highest in the air to meet a Max Meyer (£5.5m) cross with his head and find the back of the net.

Max Meyer was one of Palace’s most creative players against Luzern

In the aftermath of Wan-Bissaka’s departure from Selhurst Park, there has been keen interest in who will replace him at right-back.

Youngster Sam Woods, traditionally a centre-back, played the entire 90 minutes in this position while Joel Ward (£4.5m) was used at centre-back and Martin Kelly (£4.0m) joined him at the heart of defence at half-time, to allow Jairo Riedewald another chance to push forward into central midfield.

Obviously, there is only so much we can read into Hodgson’s decision to start Woods at right-back at this early stage, but it’s worth keeping an eye on that position throughout the summer.

As has been mentioned before, we certainly shouldn’t rule out recruitment in that area of the team.

Also getting a 90-minute run-out was Wayne Hennessey (£4.5m). He was unable to stop Luzern equalising in the sixth minute.

It is worth tracking how often he plays during pre-season compared to Guaita, given that he can offer a £0.5m saving on the Spanish goalkeeper.

Meyer and Benteke proved to be the main threats for Palace in the match, the former pulling the strings and the latter asking questions of the Luzern defence.

Neither of them could contribute to another goal for the Eagles though and the encounter finished 1-1 before a 6-5 win on penalties for Palace.

James McArthur (£5.5m), Ward, Kelly, Jeffrey Schlupp (£5.5m), Alexander Sørloth and Nya Kirby all netted their spot kicks with Hennessey only stopping Luzern’s sixth in sudden death.

Crystal Palace XI (4-4-2): Hennessey; van Aanholt (Mitchell 65′), Riedewald, Dann (Ward 45′), Woods; Meyer (Kirby 65′), Milivojevic (McArthur 45′), Dreher (Kelly 45′), Townsend (Schlupp 45′); Benteke (Daly 65′), Wickham (Sørloth 45′).

Highest points per game is a great indicator of where we should perhaps focus are money on.

    Sterling 6.9. 12m
    Salah 6.9. 12.5m
    Mane 6.4. 11.5m
    TAA 6.4. 7m
    Aguero 6.1. 12m
    Robbo 5.9. 7m
    Mendy 5.9. 6m

So few teams with Kun. He makes my team easier to play around with.

Is the main reason his minutes/comp with Jesus?

      I have Kun as well

His price being the same as Sterling makes it an easier choice for people to switch. If only they made Aguero 11m just like Auba and Kane

      Loads and loads of reasons.
      Jesus' form.
      Kun's price.
The high price of more explosive mids.
The high price of the best value players.
      Lack of general value.
Kane coming in at 1m cheaper.

Agreed. No idea why the Kane love. Champions league final proved he can detriment spurs as well as improve them.

August historically not great, so hopefully recovering from injury.

Fixtures swing in a way that I’m not happy with owning him for.

Unproven asset at the new home.

Too many variables outside of a city side that smashes teams early on, or Fortress Anfield.

Difficult, neither team really like a clean sheet. Holebas has good attacking stats, Ale he good fixtures. At that range for me it’s either go up and spend 0.5 more, or go down and save.

Ake if I had to though.

Couple of comments from me that hopefully the mods can address:

    1. In the article above, its a positive development to see those sheets embedded, I think they will be very useful. However, I believe it is incorrect to use "GW1" as the code for the first pre season friendly, as its easy for this to be confused with the actual GW1 in early august. Could you use "P1" or "PS1" as the code for pre season friendlies? With perhaps "CS" & "SC" for the community shield and super cup respectively?

    2. The video from yesterday lunchtime which David and Joe produced is not accessible/not working on youtube. I think Joe needs to re-upload it or convert it into a different file type and publish it on the website here instead.

Regarding number 2, what I heard was that there were some technical issues when Joe uploaded it, causing it be pretty much unwatchable. As a result it was taken down and scrapped. I think he might be planning to rerecord it later.

Seems to be an issue with YouTube as it happened in the only part of the process that we can’t control - when YouTube automatically turns a live stream that has just finished into a video. David and I are investigating tomorrow and hopeful it was a one off glitch.

I think you could make an argument for Robbo > VVD. I think he will get a couple more goals this season. He starts more or less every move. Rarely gives the ball away and wins everything. An animal off set pieces. For me he's my no.1 defender on the game. I currently own KDB but there's no right or wrong way with your choices pal so don't be put off from Rupert. City can still concede in games and Sterling as we all know can haul

Am I mad to be considering going Robbo + VVD and forgoing TAA?

Virgil is just such a lynch pin for us and tends to do quietly very well in FPL terms. Robbo has the edge over TAA for me because of consistency (not sure I buy all the people that say TAA being one year old will be a game changer)

Should I jsut go TAA and Robbo like everyone else and lose 0.5 elsewhere?

      Hardly mad.
But Taa will almost certainly have a lot more minutes this season. I he gets anywhere near VVD's minutes he'll significantly outscore him. Robbo started the season with a bit more consistency because he didn't have any injuries.
Once TAA sorted out his niggles he absolutely stormed the last 10-12 games.

I don't think so, well at least the "significance" part anyway.
There were so many Virg. near misses last season and he's a comfort blanket for the guaranteed start.

        Trent is not.

Well Trent wasn't, but I don't think we knew quite what we had on our hands at first. Once we realised he really was that good, the rotation stopped. VVD did have a few near misses, but TAA is only going to improve. Still can't believe he accrued 13 assists.

With the way TAA has played, he’s going to get more minutes, more responsibility, and more corners.

To me, that’s more points from attacking and BPS. Virg will tick along nicely and score from corners but I don’t tube that compares to what tAA offers.

Not enough up front for me personally. I tried Salah and Sterling but was so hard to get a decent balance. I downgraded Sterling and got Kun up front. Consider Kane for 11m too.
Sterling > 5m (your midfield looks decent enough, could even consider Tielemans/Maddison/Fraser)

Presuming that Zincenko appears to have the spot nailed down after pre-season at MCI and also that the Fraser/Wilson partnership stays intact at BOU, which combo do you prefer here? Thanks :

    A - Fraser / Zincenko
    B - Brooks / Laporte

This year could be the year of the Jesus. In sparkling form and this could be when Aguero's minutes are managed a lot more.

      This is what will happen:
Jesus plays just enough that Aguero is no longer a viable option, and we see enough of Jesus that he's not priced as a bargain next season, when Aguero leaves. The end of season points totals will be:
      Aguero: 127
      Jesus: 89

Right, Kun played so much last season because Jesus was off the pace and Pep couldn't afford to drop a point. Jesus has had a good S. American tournament, better than Aguero, suggesting his form has returned. To me it suggests Pep will be happy to rotate them more - Kun still with the lion's share of playing time but Jesus starting more often and getting more sub minutes than last season. So I agree, it will impact on Kun's points haul and therefore Sterling becomes the go-to offensive City option.

so FPL have overpriced Aguero this season...should have been 11m like Auba and Kane?

Even 11.5 could have worked, but 12m is pretty pointless.

This is problematic for me. I'm currently on Aguero + Salah because I can only afford two big hitters and I want both City and Liverpool coverage the flexibility of a big ass striker so I can switch over to Kane/Aubamayang if needs be

You can switch with 2FT from Sterling anyway. It's not a huge inconvenience to get an almost undoubtedly better fpl point scorer

Looks good, but If you are playing Ederson as set & forget, then downgrade Ryan to 4m to use extra 0.5m elsewhere. Will you ever play Ryan over Ederson?

      1. Teror
        • 9 Years
        4 years, 8 months ago

This. Neves and kante are absurd picks as well. Downgrade one to a 4.5 then use the remaining funds to beef up the other. Also, doubling up on any defence other than Liverpool is unadvisable. Better spend 0.5 to turn Walker into VVD or Digne/Coleman.

        Otherwise good.

6.0 is an awkward price point. I think that for midfielders you either go 4.5 bench fodder or 6.5. In between the only one I'd consider is Moutinho. Try find the funds to do Neves > Perez/Tielemens if you can. Otherwise Moutinho

    2. theswallow1965

It's the Salah plus Sterling issue. It unbalances the team I think, I tried it too but downgraded Sterling and spread the funds.
Not too keen on the D Silva pick either for some reason.
      How about:
      Sterling > KDB
      Silva > Siggy
Will leave you about 2m to upgrade elsewhere.

      Just my thoughts.

    3. theswallow1965

Or you could do Kane > Kun if you want City attack. Would still give a valuable 1m to upgrade those defenders.

I like both options, especially the aguero choice.

        I thought:

        D. Silva > Moutinho (WOL)
        Hayden > Hernandez (NOR)
        Kelly > Aarons (NOR)
        Simpson > Taylor (BUR)

All regular starters, but I'm losing out the points between Silva and Moutinho...

        I've ended up going with:

        D. Silva > Tielemans (LEI)
        Hayden > Dendoncker (WOL)
        Kelly > Aarons (NOR)
        Simpson > Taylor (BUR)

I'm bored so, although I usually don't post RMTs, here's one for you guys

    Heaton/Pope
    TAA Robertson VVD Digne Coleman
    Sterling Eriksen Sigurdsson Moura
    Vardy
    4.0 | Andone | Dendoncker | Greenwood

My only uncertainty so far is Bernardo and Adams over Coleman and Andone, which I will go for if for whatever reason Andone doesn't look 1st choice. I also like Gomez but am worried about Matip poking through where her isn't wanted, and anyway wouldn't know which Liverpool defender to drop for him.

They used a 3-1-4-2 / 3-5-2 once or twice last season, and sometimes went with two forwards when chasing a game, but the squads build for a 4-3-3, so I'm not expecting any changes. With Pep, you never know tho.
