Scout Notes

Coverage of pre-season matches commences

The Fantasy Premier League pre-season programme is about to kick into overdrive as we edge closer to Gameweek 1 of the new campaign.

Everton and Crystal Palace have already played their first matches (detailed below) and there are more to come in the next few days.

Fantasy managers are reminded to stay tuned into our pre-season page to get all the latest updates and talking points from the summer’s friendlies.

We will be producing Scout Notes articles regularly between now and Gameweek 1 on the matches played by the top-flight sides.

Not only will we be on the lookout for the next Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.5m), the Scout editorial team will be tracking pre-season minutes of every FPL asset.

That way, when we publish our predicted line-ups for Gameweek 1, they will be based on as much information given to us by the respective Premier League managers as possible.

We have already made a start on our spreadsheets which, this season, will be publicly available to you throughout the summer as we update them on a special page of its own.

For now, we have embedded the sheets below for all teams with a fixture between now and Sunday to give you a taster.

In order for desktop users to navigate these sheets, select the embedded window and use the arrow keys to scroll across.

Mobile users can simply drag the sheet across to navigate fully although we should point out that they are best viewed on a desktop device.

As already mentioned, Everton started us off on Saturday as they flew to Kenya for their first pre-season game.

Kariobangi Sharks 1-1 Everton (4-3 on penalties)

Everton began their pre-season campaign in Kenya

Goals: Joe Williams

As it was their first pre-season friendly it is hard to read too much into Everton’s 1-1 draw with Kariobangi Sharks over the weekend.

Only a handful of first-team players were involved for the Toffees as Marco Silva simply gave his players a run-out.

Lucas Digne (£6.0m), Gylfi Sigurdsson (£8.0m) and Jordan Pickford (£5.5m) were among the big names absent for Everton, while Richarlison (£8.0m) was busy winning the Copa America with Brazil.

Of those priced up by FPL for the new season, only Leighton Baines (£5.0m), Maarten Stekelenburg (£4.0m), Theo Walcott (£6.5m), André Gomes (£6.5m), Tom Davies (£5.5m), Morgan Schneiderlin (£4.5m) and Ademola Lookman (£5.0m) were involved against the Sharks.

All of them played no more than 45 minutes, with the latter featuring for just 15 as he went off with an injury.

Lookman left Kenya with the help of crutches after twisting his ankle against the Sharks and Everton confirmed afterwards that his knock would require a scan.

“Ademola Lookman will undergo a scan this afternoon after sustaining an ankle injury against Kariobangi Sharks.” – Everton press release

The performance against Kariobangi was by no means impressive, but that shouldn’t bother Fantasy managers at this point.

With Digne not back in pre-season training at the time, Baines started at left-back

As already mentioned, most of the key personnel were absent from the match-day squad while those who did play were still building up their fitness.

Nairobi, where the fixture took place, is also a high-altitude location, which would have made it harder for Everton’s players, just six days into pre-season training, to look as sharp as they will probably be when Gameweek 1 comes around.

Mason Holgate, not currently priced up by FPL, but with history on the game, had a particularly poor afternoon, looking especially off the pace and at fault for the Sharks’ opening goal.

Stekelenburg did not look in the kind of form to stand a chance of ousting Pickford from his number one spot as he was less than impressive.

Meanwhile, Jonas Lössl (still not priced by FPL) made his first appearance in an Everton shirt.

The Toffees were much better in the second half as youngster Joe Williams equalised from a free-kick but they still went on to lose on penalties.

12 months ago, Everton began pre-season with a 22-0 win against an unheard of European minnow – and the advice was not to read too much into it. The same should be said about this performance as there is still a long way to go.

Up next for Silva’s men is a trip to FC Sion on Sunday afternoon and with Digne, Pickford and Michael Keane (£5.5m) now back in training as of Tuesday, we could see more of a meaningful encounter in that one.

“It was good, a good experience. We’ve come out here and do what we were supposed to do which was more about fulfilling our obligations. The game at the end of a long week was a nice way to round it off. I enjoyed the short time we had out here. It was a good experience for the younger players to come out and good for the Kenyan lads as well. I’m sure that will be something that will stay with them. The game was a fun type of game and that’s what it was supposed to be.” – Leighton Baines

Everton XI: Stekelenburg (Lössl 45′); Baines (Robinson 45′), Connolly (Astley 45′), Gibson (Markelo 88′), Holgate (Feeney 72′); Davies (J Williams 45′), Schneiderlin (Baningme 45′), A Gomes (Adnerian 45′); Lookman (Broadhead 15′), Niasse (Hornby 45′), Walcott (Bowler 45′).

FC Luzern 1-1 Crystal Palace (5-6 on pens)

Roy Hodgson returned to the country where he made a name for himself in the 1990s

Goals: Christian Benteke (£6.0m)

Assists: Max Meyer (£5.5m)

In contrast to Silva, Roy Hodgson used the majority of his senior first-team players in Crystal Palace’s trip to FC Luzern in Switzerland.

Only five FPL assets were absent for the Eagles and most of them were not involved due either to injury or international duty.

Mamadou Sakho (£5.0m) and James Tomkins (£5.0m) are still sidelined with knocks sustained last season, while Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) and Cheikhou Kouyaté (£5.0m) are competing for Ivory Coast and Senegal respectively at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Vicente Guaita (£5.0m) was not in the match-day squad and, as yet, there has been no official explanation for his absence, but there’s still plenty of pre-season matches to play.

The match got off to a quick start as Christian Benteke (£6.0m), leading a 4-4-2 formation alongside Connor Wickham (£4.5m), opened the scoring in the second minute.

He rose highest in the air to meet a Max Meyer (£5.5m) cross with his head and find the back of the net.

Max Meyer was one of Palace’s most creative players against Luzern

In the aftermath of Wan-Bissaka’s departure from Selhurst Park, there has been keen interest in who will replace him at right-back.

Youngster Sam Woods, traditionally a centre-back, played the entire 90 minutes in this position while Joel Ward (£4.5m) was used at centre-back and Martin Kelly (£4.0m) joined him at the heart of defence at half-time, to allow Jairo Riedewald another chance to push forward into central midfield.

Obviously, there is only so much we can read into Hodgson’s decision to start Woods at right-back at this early stage, but it’s worth keeping an eye on that position throughout the summer.

As has been mentioned before, we certainly shouldn’t rule out recruitment in that area of the team.

Also getting a 90-minute run-out was Wayne Hennessey (£4.5m). He was unable to stop Luzern equalising in the sixth minute.

It is worth tracking how often he plays during pre-season compared to Guaita, given that he can offer a £0.5m saving on the Spanish goalkeeper.

Meyer and Benteke proved to be the main threats for Palace in the match, the former pulling the strings and the latter asking questions of the Luzern defence.

Neither of them could contribute to another goal for the Eagles though and the encounter finished 1-1 before a 6-5 win on penalties for Palace.

James McArthur (£5.5m), Ward, Kelly, Jeffrey Schlupp (£5.5m), Alexander Sørloth and Nya Kirby all netted their spot kicks with Hennessey only stopping Luzern’s sixth in sudden death.

Crystal Palace XI (4-4-2): Hennessey; van Aanholt (Mitchell 65′), Riedewald, Dann (Ward 45′), Woods; Meyer (Kirby 65′), Milivojevic (McArthur 45′), Dreher (Kelly 45′), Townsend (Schlupp 45′); Benteke (Daly 65′), Wickham (Sørloth 45′).

Depends who the full back is on the left, but it is a possibility. However, trying to fit the best players of Acuero, sterling, KDB, B Silva, Fernandinho, in that formation would mean a lot of players not being included.

I’m pretty happy with this so far. Pending gore season, maybe a few gems will throw themselves into the mix.

    Ryan, another 4.5 (not fussed)

TAA, Robbo, Digne, 4.5, 4.5 pending pre season
Salah Sterling Siggy, , Brooks, Dendocker
    King, Giroud, Andone.

Can switch Giroud to Vardy and Sterling to KDB, and Brooks to Willian very easily!

Perez is good but can be so frustrating. Starts okay, then fades, then suddenly is a world beater for last 5-6 games of the seasons. Happens every season.

Tielemans is class. An absolute bargain at 6.5, someone was drunk when they released that.

Too early to rank right now really with so much currently up in the air regarding these players? Ask again after pre-season. Zaha at AFCON could miss first game or 2? Might not even be at Palace either? How are Leicester going to line-up and which mid looks the best FPL prospect this season, could be any 1 of the 3?

Who are the players you are watching who maybe are flying under the radar at the moment but that have the potential to become good or popular picks by GW1? Few I've provisionally noticed:

Wickham - With CPL not having a glut of striking options, a fit Conor Wickham could become the 4.5 striker who gets appearance points from our benches.

Yarmolenko - West Ham could be decent going forward and Yarmolenko has potential to be OOP esp with Arnie gone. He looked promising before his injury.

Bilva - I think he may be the most nailed in the City attack. He's cheap, and is a great player who will be an FPL bargain if he can just add an extra end product. There might be fears of rotation between Kun and Jesus and I think KDB might have minutes managed more this season to prevent injury. I think a double up with Sterling might yet prove to be the way to go.

Dalot - Truly dark horse territory here but outside chance Dalot could be OOP as winger for Utd. He played there occasionally last year and there doesn't seem to be huge competition for the right winger spot - Rashford CF, Lingard and Mata are more suited to number 10 role, Sanchez and Martial on the left.

Thoughts on my list or who are you monitoring?

Jorginho - unlucky not to get a few assists last year and could be on pens and playing further up the pitch if Kante is played in a more natural DM role.

Holebas - On some set pieces, has a cracking cross. Watford fans seem to be of the opinion that Holebas is still superior to his understudy Masina. Priced at a modest 5.0. Feel people are mostly off because of the yellow cards, but still feel he could be a decent pick.

Che Adams - my grav. The guy will be a legend, just watch.

Emi Buendia - very good creator. Brought in to be Madisson replacement and has been absolutely superb. Peopl probably put off by his 6.0m price tag.

McNeil - the guy is the spark of that Burnley attack imo. Reminds me of Ashley Young in his Watford days. What a left peg, surprised no top-six clubs are bidding for him. 6.0m, he's in my watchlist for now.

        About your list

Wickham scored in preseason already as well. if he keeps fit . . .

I've been on the Bilva train. Nope.

Dalot is definitely one i'm watching. Add the potential of DDG getting back in form and him nailing a possible OOP role, and he is brilliant value at 5.0m.

Not convinced on Holebas - bit of a red card magnet and Watford are never great for CSs. But he could definitely go on a run of assists like last year.

Adams is one I'm monitoring also. Southampton could be decent this year.

Buendia I haven't seen much of. Think I'll be avoiding Norwich personally to start with but thanks for the heads up on him.

Wickham and B Silva are in my team at the moment. Yarmolenko unlikely to be OoP with Chicharito and Antonio around, but if he were I'd be interested. Dalot very much a no-go for me.

Bernardo Silva was a nailed on right winger for a Monaco team that scored 107 goals in Ligue 1. He still didn't achieve double digit figures in either category. It's not coincidences or a lack of quality that is the issue. It's all about mentality, and Bernardo Silva doesn't need offensive returns to be one of the best players in the league. There's no point trying to predict him to do well.

I don't think a player with 30% ownership is flying under the radar.

I think David Silva is an under the radar pick. His underlying stats are amazing for a player of that price, and much better than Bernardo Silva's. He's still a top midfielder despite his age, and I'd expect him to start all of the games before CL gets going.

To take your post a witty pun's together, I foresee Dilva being eased out due to his age and last season, for Foden to be nurtured and take over the position next season. A lot of Phil's action will be off the bench but he's quite nifty with late goals.

That's my point - any FPL option must start. Banking on the occasional goal off the bench is fine for a 4.5 but naught else. David obviously won't be a starter, but he's still in Fodens way as essentially the 1st No. 8 on the bench (Gundogan being the 2nd).

Love the Yarmolenko pick - if he’s fit he could be absolute gold at his price

Ings and JWP are in a similar bracket for me, although moreso Ings

Even though he seems to be made of a very fine, crystal-like substance that can shatter with a strong gust of wind... when he’s fit he delivers FPL points

I think he’s mightn’t be the worst option for GW1 as we’ll have h eh ugh advantage of unlimited FT to swap him out if any concerns while observing his fitness battle pre season

Holebas is defo in my side if he looks nailed. Not a long term pick but he shouldn’t hit too many bans before first WC.

Yarmolenko looks tempting but so many options at WH and so much churn last year means he’s a major doubt for me

Gross is very close to being in. He needs a good preseason but Potter apparently loves to rotate so a doubt too.

O’Connell may get my 4.5 spot alongside Cathcart if I avoid Holebas. Reasonable punt I feel.

Meyer could be class at 5.5. If he looks nailed in preseason he’s a temptation. But the one area Palace have options is in central mid and Roy won’t give up Schlupp MacArthur Kouyate solidity unless he absolutely has to

I like Balbuena, but he doesn't rotate with Targett particularly well. Koscielny maybe, if you have the extra 0.5.

Fair enough with Tielemans. I understand I am in the minority and you can always switch him out if he does underperform.

My team as of now is:

          Heaton, Button
          TAA, Robertson, Digne, Zinchenko, Balbuena
Salah, KDB, B Silva, Sigurdsson, Dendoncker
          Wilson, Jota, Wickham

Subject to a lot of change though, naturally.

Zinny would be dream if he nails that LB spot.

I expect Zinchenko will get the LB spot to start off with at least, he was exceptional towards the end of last season.

Hi mate. I've heard rumours Tarkowski could be on his way out which wouldn't surprise me now he's played for England. Clubs like Leicester could move in for him if or when Maguire moves. That then makes Gibson a great option at 4m.

Defenders from all teams offer attacking returns, that isn't exclusive to ManCity and Liverpool.

And when you lose ground after these teams keep a clean sheet because everyone around you is doubled up? The Liverpool defence if they sustain their form are arguably the best value players in the game.

      diversity doesn't equal more points.
doubling up just increases variance - that's all. some weeks you will get 2+2, others you will get 6+6.
question you have to ask yourself is: will the 2nd liverpool defender outscore another pick (e.g. a chelsea defender) and if its a yes, then go with it and accept slightly higher variance week to week

I totally understand the facts show premium defenders are gold. My argument is not against premium defenders. It is against selecting multiple of them from the same team. I will have 3 or 4 premiums but from a mix of Liverpool, City, Everton and one other.

      2. LangerznMash
        • 7 Years
        4 years, 8 months ago

I'm just not a fan of set and forget across the whole defence. There are budget rewards to be reaped using an effective rotation strategy. A 4.5m gk/defender playing at home against a bottom club has a good chance of outscoring a 6.0+ playing away to top 6 team.

I'd rather mix it up with a combination of premium (but only one per club) and budget rotation.

Also having only one premium per teams makes it easier to transfer out when there is a patch of difficult fixtures.
For example GW9+10 Liverpool are away to ManU then have Spurs. Are you going to take points hit to get them both out? You probably can't get in any more City players either as you are maxed out. If I only have VVD i can easily swap him for Laporte (Palace + Villa) for those two weeks.

Exactly. Except starting DCL every week won't be much fun. I'd go Kane to Vardy and spend the change wisely.

I personally feel that, for now, one of the LIV fullback beasts is essential - I love Virgil (and he has been in and out of my drafts) but think he needs to be alongside one of the attacking boys

Yep, if he stays at Bournemouth you have a nailed on, proven performer against 2 promoted sides and then you can take your pick of the others, rather than trying (and most likely failing) to guess which of the 7s is the best pick before the season starts.

Think this will have to do for now - any more serious tinkering needs to wait or it's wasted energy imo

              Ryan
              Robbo, TAA, Laporte, Digne
              Salah, Sterling, Siggy, Tielemans
              King, Jota/ Deulo
              (Button) (Dendoncker, Kelly, Nketiah)

I am seriously tempted by Vardy but it essentially would require me to do Sterling, Tielemans > KDB, Brooks which I def don't feel as secure about!

              Thoughts?

The Vardy + KDB vs Sterling + 6.5 striker is the biggest debate around here, you are not alone

You have a template team, so its good.

No but I don’t like the other downgrades I’d have to make to do it if I kept Sterling. £2.5m has a big impact on a team

Starting to think Zaha needs to go due to him still being at the AFCON and the uncertainty about which club he'll be at. Who's the best mid at 7m or under? I like the Leicester boys but think it could be wise to watch them for two weeks (WOL, che) and see who looks like the best option ahead of two plum fixtures (shu, BOU). Brooks perhaps?

I think for the first 2 GWs, Fraser is the best best around that price point, the nice thing with him is that you can easily downgrade to the likes of Maddison/Zaha/Chelsea mid ect, even if they get some price raises

This is my plan at least.

Yeah I'm thinking about downgrading Laporte to Walker so I can afford Fraser but I won't be comfortable with that if City sign Cancelo or another big name right back.

Tielemans is the clear standout to me. The guy is WAY underpriced imo.

Redmond going under the radar due to mixed fixtures. The guy lights up our attack.

I don't think there's any serious uncertainty about where he'll be. Palace don't want to be relegated. They've already sold half the reason they weren't (their solid defence, of which AWB was vital to), they aren't about to sell the other half. That said, he could easily play poorly as a result of having his move blocked.

Funnily enough, the vast majority of my watchlist consists of 6.0-6.5 mids despite my actual team having none.

Vardy will be excellent value I imagine, and Jiminez and Jota hand been priced very generously too. Nonetheless, I see where you're coming from.

                  A) Ederson + Digne
                  B) Pickford + Laporte
                  C) Pickford + Digne + 0.5m

Any preferences on the above combos?
(I'm also considering Coleman over Digne)
