Keen interest in new-look Chelsea side under Lampard

Bohemians 1-1 Chelsea

Goals: Michy Batshuayi

Assists: Kenedy

Fantasy Premier League managers were reminded of the wealth of options available to Frank Lampard’s Chelsea team in their first pre-season match.

With most of last season’s regulars absent, the Blues drew 1-1 with Irish side Bohemians on Wednesday evening.

The result was not too encouraging, but at this early stage of pre-season, it’s important not to read too much into such things.

Instead, it’s more important, especially in the case of Chelsea, to examine which players were and were not involved – as well as Lampard’s tactics.

At this admittedly early stage of his time as the Blues’ boss, he initially deployed his players in a 4-2-3-1 formation, finally taking the club away from Maurizio Sarri’s favoured 4-3-3.

A 4-1-4-1 was used in the second half, but this featured more peripheral figures.

Against Bohemians, Lampard also encouraged his players to apply a high press when they were without the ball and when in possession they were much more direct than in the 2018/19 season.

However, we will have to see these tactics utilised when more first-team players are involved before we can say with certainty that Lampard wants to use them in Gameweek 1.

As already mentioned, most of last season’s key assets were absent.

Antonio Rüdiger (£6.0m), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£6.5m) and Callum Hudson-Odoi (£6.0m) all missed out due to injury.

Meanwhile, Willian (£7.0m) and Christian Pulisic (£7.5m) are yet to join up with the squad after involvement in the Copa America and CONCACAF Gold Cup with Brazil and USA respectively.

Only six options currently priced up by FPL were in the matchday squad on Wednesday night. We have updated the Google spreadsheet cataloguing their pre-season minutes.

Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.0m) and Pedro (£7.0m) were the biggest names to feature from the start.

After 12 months of right-back duties under Sarri, new manager Frank Lampard returned Azpilicueta to a centre-back role, which could have some interesting implications for the rest of pre-season.

Obviously, there is still a long way to go, but if the Spaniard ends up being preferred at centre-back, it would leave a vacancy in the right-back position.

It was youngster Dujon Sterling who started there against Bohemians but Davide Zappacosta (£4.5m) was handed the role for the second half.

If the Italian were to hold down a starting position in the Chelsea defence this season he could provide exceptional value, so we should definitely continue to monitor him and Azpilicueta during pre-season.

Crucially, the match with Bohemians reminded Fantasy managers just how many players will be at Chelsea’s disposal in 2019/20.

Fantasy managers should track where Azpilicueta is stationed during pre-season matches this summer

It was Michy Batshuayi who scored their only goal of the game to highlight that the centre-forward battle is between three players for the 2019/20 season.

Olivier Giroud (£7.0m) is the only one to have been priced up by FPL so far but Tammy Abraham and Batshuayi, returning from loans at Aston Villa and Crystal Palace respectively, will also be in the fight.

Monitoring each of these players during pre-season will be vital, to see which one claims the number one spot given the potential bargain on offer.

In defence, former Newcastle loanee Kenedy was deployed at left-back to throw his name into the hat for competition there.

Marcos Alonso (£6.5m) already faces the challenge of Emerson Palmieri (£5.5m) so there is definitely uncertainty on that side of the defence, although Kenedy is also capable of playing on the left of midfield.

As Fantasy managers clamour for Everton assets, especially in defence, Chelsea’s match in Ireland provided a chastening reminder of the Toffees’ missing puzzle piece.

Kurt Zouma (not currently priced by FPL) was deployed at centre-back in the second half as his future continues to hang in the balance.

Marco Silva is reportedly hoping to bring the Frenchman to Goodison Park on a permanent deal but this pre-season will give us an indication of whether Lampard will let him do that.

If he starts getting regular game-time in the pre-season friendlies, it might suggest the new Blues boss would rather keep hold of him.

This would be a blow to Silva and Everton, as well as Fantasy managers looking to the Toffees defence as Zouma was a key factor in them keeping eight clean sheets in their last 11 matches of 2018/19.

Also worth tracking during pre-season is the versatile Ethan Ampadu (£4.5m).

The former Exeter City man is also capable of playing at centre-back but has historically been used in a deep central midfield role at Chelsea.

Against Bohemians, Ampadu helped screen the defence and earned high praise from the local press, who described the bite and aggression he added to midfield as something Chelsea missed under Sarri.

Meanwhile, as promised, Danny Drinkwater (£4.5m) was given an opportunity by Lampard after being forced very much out of contention by Sarri last season and Willy Caballero (£5.0m) played 45 minutes in goal.

“Fitness was our issue, we’ve been working hard on it, even this morning. Fitness was always going to be an issue against a team that’s halfway through their season. We certainly pushed ourselves to the limit. The quicker we get there the better. It’s about individuals getting fit. Some of the young lads were really good. We want to get a level of fitness and intensity in their game.” – Frank Lampard

Chelsea first-half XI (4-2-3-1): Caballero; Kenedy, Guehi, Azpilicueta, D Sterling; Ampadu, Drinkwater; Palmer, G Gallagher; Pedro; Batshuayi.

Chelsea second-half XI (4-1-4-1): Cumming; Maatsen, Zouma, Chalobah, Zappacosta; Bakayoko; Brown, Baker, Gilmour, Piazon; Ugbo.

If Bats or Abraham emerges as the first choice striker then they should be good value.

It’s a straight choice for me between Everton and Chelsea defence.

A nailed Alonso - unlikely - gets in. But I think I’d have Azpi over Digne if Everton don’t get a striker. If Christensen is nailed I’d probably have him over Coleman - it’s certainly be a close call.

      Everton striker means Digne
      No Christensen means Coleman

Actually not quite true. Trippier if he stays and if Aurier is out also enters the mix if as seems likely I don’t stretch to Lloris.

Currently have Giroud who will maybe turn to Bats/Tammy depending on Pre season. Chelsea forward seems incredible value if we have an idea who Lampard prefers

Waiting to see if any bargains emerge - a 5m Christensen of 4.5 Zappacosta would be very tasty. Unlikely, though.

How many bench players are people going to run with that are very likely starters (high likeliness of 2pts)? Currently have 2 (Dendoncker + Stephens) but seen a lot of teams with 0 likely starters on the bench

      Ryan
      TAA | VVD | Digne | Zinchenko | A.Smith
      Salah | KdB
      Kane | Vardy | King

      Button | Dendoncker | Hayden | Stephens

        How nailed is Smith?

I started as a convinced 5-2-3 man but there’s double jeopardy if a defender or striker drops.

I still see it as a reasonable play given pricing structure but it’s value imo is being able to stick to it long enough to get value. I wouldn’t be able to.

You still have the option of moving funds upfield of course. But that’s harder on the lot you have there with 3 sub premium picks. I had TAA Robbo Walker Luiz Trippier from memory which made it easier to get a mid forward - no Vardy AND KdB of course

For me, a dead keeper and one sub is okay so long as you have 2 active subs. Donkers is perfect for that role, along with a 4.5 emergency defender. If you can afford to be more positive, a 5m mid like Noble would be a nice little luxury. My third sub is Greenwood, who I do expect to get late minutes quite often.

    A or B ?

    A. Sterling, VVD, Zinchenko + Dendoncker (only possibly playing benchplayer)

              Agreed mostly

Which is why I moved off the big 5 - not my game style. That said if you fancy Pool defence more gab attack in weeks 1 and 2 given Afcon etc then it’s still a plausible approach imo

There’s a bit of speculation in the article that if lamps prefers AZpi as a centre half that chelsea’s RB slot becomes free for Zappa to potentially take & he’s only 4.5

Hugely speculative though and when Rudiger, Luiz, Christensen etc get back to add to Zouma then it’s probably a no go zone

But one to keep an eye on for sure

When you consider what Lampard has to do to get a Chelsea team together, it's short.

    Woodman - ElMo - Kelly - Xander

    A) DCL
    B) Murray

    D) Wesley

Prices for the cheapest nailed-on starters:

    GK : 4.5m
    DEF: 4.5m
    MID: 4.5m
    FWD: 6.0m

Striker prices have become too bloated. It means one-striker formations are just too impractical, unfortunately.

Brighton/Newcastle could help out there, but yeah - does it kinda make Jota/Deulo/King really good value VORP-wise?

      1. Piggs Boson
        • 12 Years
        4 years, 9 months ago

Yeah, we'll have to see if those two teams are content with the strikers they have. 5.5 is still a little high for the bench, but 5.0 might be okay.

And yeah, 6.5m forwards are excellent VORP-wise. Essentially costs you 0.5m for a big upgrade.

        1. SADIO SANÉ
          • 8 Years
          4 years, 9 months ago

if we call it 4.0 for defenders (Kelly is playable for clean sheets), 5.0 for mids (conveniently forgetting Dendoncker) and 5.5 for forwards (Muto?) - then compare the 5.0 defenders, 6.0 mids and 6.5 forwards then Jota and co suddenly look pretty good..

          1. SADIO SANÉ
            • 8 Years
            4 years, 9 months ago

I know none of them are the no.1 forward in their teams but I do think those 6.5m forwards should probably be 7.0 - especially when you take into account the PPM's for Jota (and probably Deulo) when they actually played upfront

          2. Piggs Boson
            • 12 Years
            4 years, 9 months ago

Kelly is a temporary nailed-on starter, and we're not sure for how long at the moment. Palace is will probably sign players.

If I were to use a scale for players I'd be happy to play every single week it'd probably be:
            GK: 4.5
DEF: 5.5 (Maybe 5.0 for Evans)
            MID: 5.5
            FWD: 6.0

But yeah, Jota looks good no matter what method you use. Just a shame his schedule is horseshite.

yeah fair, completely agree, think King may essentially just be my place holder for Jota (GW3 maybe?) unless he starts firing himself

well not completely, think Jorginho may genuinely be playable but we'll see

Doesn't get me excited personally. And no one to transition to if it fails.

5.5m range at least has El Ghazi, Hernandez, Moutinho, maybe Djenepo, maybe Gray.

6.0m probably looks the best cheap category for starters though with high-potential players like Yarmolenko, CHO, Trossard, James, Graelish, Pereyra, Buendia, Almiron, Townsend.

agree, honestly at this stage I'd rather play Dendoncker or Jorginho over any of those 5.5 mids (except Moutinho) - yeah the 6.0 lot might unearth someone decent

    2. LangerznMash
      • 7 Years

Preseason may unearth a starting 4.0m defender and a starting sub 6.0m forward (many tipping Andone).

Realistically, you don't want a 4.5m starting in midfield. That's bench material. And anyway, there's really only Donkers at the moment.

      Be careful of:

Robertson - rumours are he's injured? I don't know how valid this is, can someone confirm?
Bernardo Silva - with KDB back, this might cause some rotation, unsure though.
Calvert-Lewin - Everton are in the market for a forward, and have eyes on Costa.

      Mind if I don't? 😉
It's pretty good, tbf. You won't get hauls from Bilva and DCL though. If you save 0.5 by going VVD or Coleman you'd get a better striker.

Yes, he's nailed. And doesn't get many yellows. Just the best 4.5m mid available.

Hayden would be #1 choice, if he didn't say he wants to leave Newcastle this summer. Doubt he'll play for Newcastle again.

Just signed permanently. Popular vs Hayden and Stephens, who both have, or will have new managers.
