Keen interest in new-look Chelsea side under Lampard

Bohemians 1-1 Chelsea

Goals: Michy Batshuayi

Assists: Kenedy

Fantasy Premier League managers were reminded of the wealth of options available to Frank Lampard’s Chelsea team in their first pre-season match.

With most of last season’s regulars absent, the Blues drew 1-1 with Irish side Bohemians on Wednesday evening.

The result was not too encouraging, but at this early stage of pre-season, it’s important not to read too much into such things.

Instead, it’s more important, especially in the case of Chelsea, to examine which players were and were not involved – as well as Lampard’s tactics.

At this admittedly early stage of his time as the Blues’ boss, he initially deployed his players in a 4-2-3-1 formation, finally taking the club away from Maurizio Sarri’s favoured 4-3-3.

A 4-1-4-1 was used in the second half, but this featured more peripheral figures.

Against Bohemians, Lampard also encouraged his players to apply a high press when they were without the ball and when in possession they were much more direct than in the 2018/19 season.

However, we will have to see these tactics utilised when more first-team players are involved before we can say with certainty that Lampard wants to use them in Gameweek 1.

As already mentioned, most of last season’s key assets were absent.

Antonio Rüdiger (£6.0m), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£6.5m) and Callum Hudson-Odoi (£6.0m) all missed out due to injury.

Meanwhile, Willian (£7.0m) and Christian Pulisic (£7.5m) are yet to join up with the squad after involvement in the Copa America and CONCACAF Gold Cup with Brazil and USA respectively.

Only six options currently priced up by FPL were in the matchday squad on Wednesday night. We have updated the Google spreadsheet cataloguing their pre-season minutes.

Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.0m) and Pedro (£7.0m) were the biggest names to feature from the start.

After 12 months of right-back duties under Sarri, new manager Frank Lampard returned Azpilicueta to a centre-back role, which could have some interesting implications for the rest of pre-season.

Obviously, there is still a long way to go, but if the Spaniard ends up being preferred at centre-back, it would leave a vacancy in the right-back position.

It was youngster Dujon Sterling who started there against Bohemians but Davide Zappacosta (£4.5m) was handed the role for the second half.

If the Italian were to hold down a starting position in the Chelsea defence this season he could provide exceptional value, so we should definitely continue to monitor him and Azpilicueta during pre-season.

Crucially, the match with Bohemians reminded Fantasy managers just how many players will be at Chelsea’s disposal in 2019/20.

Fantasy managers should track where Azpilicueta is stationed during pre-season matches this summer

It was Michy Batshuayi who scored their only goal of the game to highlight that the centre-forward battle is between three players for the 2019/20 season.

Olivier Giroud (£7.0m) is the only one to have been priced up by FPL so far but Tammy Abraham and Batshuayi, returning from loans at Aston Villa and Crystal Palace respectively, will also be in the fight.

Monitoring each of these players during pre-season will be vital, to see which one claims the number one spot given the potential bargain on offer.

In defence, former Newcastle loanee Kenedy was deployed at left-back to throw his name into the hat for competition there.

Marcos Alonso (£6.5m) already faces the challenge of Emerson Palmieri (£5.5m) so there is definitely uncertainty on that side of the defence, although Kenedy is also capable of playing on the left of midfield.

As Fantasy managers clamour for Everton assets, especially in defence, Chelsea’s match in Ireland provided a chastening reminder of the Toffees’ missing puzzle piece.

Kurt Zouma (not currently priced by FPL) was deployed at centre-back in the second half as his future continues to hang in the balance.

Marco Silva is reportedly hoping to bring the Frenchman to Goodison Park on a permanent deal but this pre-season will give us an indication of whether Lampard will let him do that.

If he starts getting regular game-time in the pre-season friendlies, it might suggest the new Blues boss would rather keep hold of him.

This would be a blow to Silva and Everton, as well as Fantasy managers looking to the Toffees defence as Zouma was a key factor in them keeping eight clean sheets in their last 11 matches of 2018/19.

Also worth tracking during pre-season is the versatile Ethan Ampadu (£4.5m).

The former Exeter City man is also capable of playing at centre-back but has historically been used in a deep central midfield role at Chelsea.

Against Bohemians, Ampadu helped screen the defence and earned high praise from the local press, who described the bite and aggression he added to midfield as something Chelsea missed under Sarri.

Meanwhile, as promised, Danny Drinkwater (£4.5m) was given an opportunity by Lampard after being forced very much out of contention by Sarri last season and Willy Caballero (£5.0m) played 45 minutes in goal.

“Fitness was our issue, we’ve been working hard on it, even this morning. Fitness was always going to be an issue against a team that’s halfway through their season. We certainly pushed ourselves to the limit. The quicker we get there the better. It’s about individuals getting fit. Some of the young lads were really good. We want to get a level of fitness and intensity in their game.” – Frank Lampard

Chelsea first-half XI (4-2-3-1): Caballero; Kenedy, Guehi, Azpilicueta, D Sterling; Ampadu, Drinkwater; Palmer, G Gallagher; Pedro; Batshuayi.

Chelsea second-half XI (4-1-4-1): Cumming; Maatsen, Zouma, Chalobah, Zappacosta; Bakayoko; Brown, Baker, Gilmour, Piazon; Ugbo.

I feel I am getting closer to my starting XI.
Ake will stay assuming he stays at Bournemouth.

What do ya think to this draft, guys..?

    Ederson
    TAA VVD Digne Ake
    Salah(c) Siggy Maddison
    Aguero King Jota

    4.0 4.5 4.5 4.0

    Thanks in advance.

Like it. Though personally I'd downgrade VVD, Maddison and Ake and make Jota Vardy. (Basically my front line too)

      Nice

I’m getting closer and closer to starting with Kun too.

I know he has the numbers but I just can’t bring myself to get Ake in. I also have a general preference for Robbo Coleman over VVD Digne.

How patient are you prepared to be with your 6.5 forwards? Lots of options in that range. I think I’d go with your two but the danger for me is burning heaps of transfers there chasing hauls.

Good early fixtures and also pops up with the odd goal. I feel I need at least one premium player in each position so I can easily rotate, so Aguero for me. Gonna keep a close eye on how my current 6.5 do in pre-season, and then reevaluate before the season starts.

Nice balance. Ake could well end up at City which could be awful or great for your team, depending on if he nails down the spot next to Laporte.

First draft without Kane, pretty template but is it worth going double Leicester?

    Ederson
    Trent Virgil Digne O'Connell
    Salah Perez Sterling
    King Vardy Jota

    Subs: Button, Dendoncker, Hayden, Rico

      Nice

My inclination is to start with Kun over Sterling to give the easy downgrade to Kane if need be a few weeks in. That would also release funds to hit an early bolter.

Like O’Connell - he’s getting close to being inked in as my makeweight who may hit paydirt.

Double Leicester? Feels a bit rich early on but not seeing much there at 6.5 apart from them. I’ve essentially downgraded Ederson to find another option.

Just some notes on a West Ham pre-season friendly yesterday because there is some fpl interest.
Admittedly WH were playing their first run out and got a narrow win against an average Austrian Bundesliga side, FC Altach (4th preseason game). Here's a few key notes...
    1. West Ham lined up in a 4-1-4-1 (at times 4-3-3).
    2. Antonio up front first half (OOP) and Chica in the second. I'd be surprised if either is the main striker obviously by the season opener, but the former scored a very clunky but athletic one on one via an excellent ball over the top by Noble. Chica still looks like an add-on in Pellers system and I can't see him suddenly being main man.
    3. Whilst Sanchez scored the first goal (snoddy corner - great delivery) it's obvious that Rice has no competition for the DCM role. Terrible player.
    4. Diop looks the best fpl defensive pick. A goal and a real presence. Fredericks does clearly show potential to really get forward though and will be an option. Not a great game to judge the defence but it's fair to say I still don't see too many Cs and WH are much stronger with Fabs and Balbuena in the side who didn't play.
    5. Yarmolenko and Wilshere played second half. I've touted the former and once he gets going he's certainly an fpl option - very skilful and direct, but a fair way from fitness and I'd now lean towards a watch list place for him in fpl terms. Wilshere was the best player on the pitch and looks fit too. Got an assist and I'd even go so far as to say he may be worth a shot at 5m - it is a risk, but he looks hungry again.

I'm sure there will be others who watched and a report here - so feel free to add your thoughts!

      Thanks!

Regarding Yarmo, part of the aim of preseason is to BUILD fitness, right? I'm glad he was even on the pitch at all, unlike when he was fit towards the end of last season. So he's expected to be rusty. Would monitor further games in preseason. If he keeps getting minutes at the rate of team regulars, he's starting the season in my squad. If not, then I've got some restructuring to do

Side note: I remember Arnie playing even with his bad knee. Pelle seems to keep his first choice as first choice, except when it's just too bad or other issues come up

      Value Over Replacement Player.

It treats value relative to the cheapest option for that position.

The cheapest possible team of 11 starters uses up £67.5m of your budget. So your real budget is essentially £32.5m.

      4.5 - 4
      4.5 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4 - 4
      4.5 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.5
      6.0 - 4.5 - 4.5

I personally don't attach too much weighting to it, but nice to keep in mind.

Value over replacement player. It's an attempt to quantify how much value you get from investing more than ’average’ in a postion. It's basically just a fancy way to talk about comparing points per million between players

Should Pogba stay, which looks likely at the moment, isn't he a really good / great pick irrespective of United's issues?

Nailed, penalties, 8.5 and a rare player who can get double digit goals and double digit assists.

He's very mood orientated. We noticed a dip in performance when he started getting unhappy again.

That's fair. He could down tools given that he may not get the move he wants. That being said the likes of Ronaldo, Bale, Suarez etc. had similar situations and produced a sensational season (out of frustration?) before getting their move the following summer.

I'm not sure what makes you say that. Pogba has a bad reputation, when in fact he seems to be quite a decent guy and professional. It's ok for the above players to force moves, but seems to be a problem when Pogba does it.

Perhaps I have him wrong but Suarez never downed tools, even when he was forced to train alone he was still professional on the pitch. I don't see that from Pogba he is very hot and cold. Not a fan of his use of social media, but then a lot of players are going this way unfortunately.

I suppose it's different for each player. Suarez did down tools, but at the same time he gave everything on the pitch. It's a sticky situation, but I don't think we should disregard Pogba as a FPL option 🙂

The not wanting to be there part could work in his favour somewhat. Suarez had a similar situation and delivered a great season, but maybe that's down to personality.

Absolutely. A couple of good weeks and he could look an important player to get.

I find it hard to justify Sterling at 12m when KDB is 9.5m to be honest. I think they're both equally as captainable in home games and equally as non-captain options in away games. At 12m, you should be able to captain players in any sort of game (maybe bar top 6 away from home?). I wouldn't feel comfortable captaining Sterling away to the likes of Wolves, Leicester etc. as I would Salah, Hazard, Aguero or Kane for example.

Could be good - depends how The Arse set up. Auba being the scorer, Laca being the assister?

        Laca 13 G 12 A, very decent numbers.
But he played about 200 minutes less than Aubameyang last season.
Going Laca over Auba allows the KdB->Sterling upgrade, with funds also coming from other places as well.

Top six predictions - yes it's early days, but so often our first impressions/gut feelings end up being more accurate than our later 'more informed' guesses.

In no particular order, i'm going:
City, Liverpool, Wolves, Spurs, Bournemouth and Arsenal/United

I'm slightly more inclined to lump it all on a single 4.5 and accept that it's a 2 pointer that will sometimes pay out much better. The extra 0.5 for me goes on Fab over a 4.5 keeper.

    Really starting to consider 5-3-2

Just seems so much value in defence, especially if Liverpool and Man City do well defensively again.

For example I have this team atm

    Ryan
    Laporte, Walker, TAA, VVD, Digne
    Salah, Sterling, Fraser
    King, Murray

    Button, Joselu, Jorginho, Deodonker

0.5m left and plan atm is to swap Fraser to Siggy before GW3.

If Newcastle sign another striker I might downgrade Jorginho to get McGoldrick in for Joselu.

Murray I will monitor the situation with Brighton pre season. If I feel he might not play much may try and get to Deloufeou

What are your thoughts? Anyone considering similar?

The assumption there is that any Brighton defence looks good. The only reason I see to get Dunk is for the outside chance if attacking returns from set pieces - that is entirely neutral on rotation.

Andone may take up lots of Murray's game time.
