Keen interest in new-look Chelsea side under Lampard

Bohemians 1-1 Chelsea

Goals: Michy Batshuayi

Assists: Kenedy

Fantasy Premier League managers were reminded of the wealth of options available to Frank Lampard’s Chelsea team in their first pre-season match.

With most of last season’s regulars absent, the Blues drew 1-1 with Irish side Bohemians on Wednesday evening.

The result was not too encouraging, but at this early stage of pre-season, it’s important not to read too much into such things.

Instead, it’s more important, especially in the case of Chelsea, to examine which players were and were not involved – as well as Lampard’s tactics.

At this admittedly early stage of his time as the Blues’ boss, he initially deployed his players in a 4-2-3-1 formation, finally taking the club away from Maurizio Sarri’s favoured 4-3-3.

A 4-1-4-1 was used in the second half, but this featured more peripheral figures.

Against Bohemians, Lampard also encouraged his players to apply a high press when they were without the ball and when in possession they were much more direct than in the 2018/19 season.

However, we will have to see these tactics utilised when more first-team players are involved before we can say with certainty that Lampard wants to use them in Gameweek 1.

As already mentioned, most of last season’s key assets were absent.

Antonio Rüdiger (£6.0m), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£6.5m) and Callum Hudson-Odoi (£6.0m) all missed out due to injury.

Meanwhile, Willian (£7.0m) and Christian Pulisic (£7.5m) are yet to join up with the squad after involvement in the Copa America and CONCACAF Gold Cup with Brazil and USA respectively.

Only six options currently priced up by FPL were in the matchday squad on Wednesday night. We have updated the Google spreadsheet cataloguing their pre-season minutes.

Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.0m) and Pedro (£7.0m) were the biggest names to feature from the start.

After 12 months of right-back duties under Sarri, new manager Frank Lampard returned Azpilicueta to a centre-back role, which could have some interesting implications for the rest of pre-season.

Obviously, there is still a long way to go, but if the Spaniard ends up being preferred at centre-back, it would leave a vacancy in the right-back position.

It was youngster Dujon Sterling who started there against Bohemians but Davide Zappacosta (£4.5m) was handed the role for the second half.

If the Italian were to hold down a starting position in the Chelsea defence this season he could provide exceptional value, so we should definitely continue to monitor him and Azpilicueta during pre-season.

Crucially, the match with Bohemians reminded Fantasy managers just how many players will be at Chelsea’s disposal in 2019/20.

Fantasy managers should track where Azpilicueta is stationed during pre-season matches this summer

It was Michy Batshuayi who scored their only goal of the game to highlight that the centre-forward battle is between three players for the 2019/20 season.

Olivier Giroud (£7.0m) is the only one to have been priced up by FPL so far but Tammy Abraham and Batshuayi, returning from loans at Aston Villa and Crystal Palace respectively, will also be in the fight.

Monitoring each of these players during pre-season will be vital, to see which one claims the number one spot given the potential bargain on offer.

In defence, former Newcastle loanee Kenedy was deployed at left-back to throw his name into the hat for competition there.

Marcos Alonso (£6.5m) already faces the challenge of Emerson Palmieri (£5.5m) so there is definitely uncertainty on that side of the defence, although Kenedy is also capable of playing on the left of midfield.

As Fantasy managers clamour for Everton assets, especially in defence, Chelsea’s match in Ireland provided a chastening reminder of the Toffees’ missing puzzle piece.

Kurt Zouma (not currently priced by FPL) was deployed at centre-back in the second half as his future continues to hang in the balance.

Marco Silva is reportedly hoping to bring the Frenchman to Goodison Park on a permanent deal but this pre-season will give us an indication of whether Lampard will let him do that.

If he starts getting regular game-time in the pre-season friendlies, it might suggest the new Blues boss would rather keep hold of him.

This would be a blow to Silva and Everton, as well as Fantasy managers looking to the Toffees defence as Zouma was a key factor in them keeping eight clean sheets in their last 11 matches of 2018/19.

Also worth tracking during pre-season is the versatile Ethan Ampadu (£4.5m).

The former Exeter City man is also capable of playing at centre-back but has historically been used in a deep central midfield role at Chelsea.

Against Bohemians, Ampadu helped screen the defence and earned high praise from the local press, who described the bite and aggression he added to midfield as something Chelsea missed under Sarri.

Meanwhile, as promised, Danny Drinkwater (£4.5m) was given an opportunity by Lampard after being forced very much out of contention by Sarri last season and Willy Caballero (£5.0m) played 45 minutes in goal.

“Fitness was our issue, we’ve been working hard on it, even this morning. Fitness was always going to be an issue against a team that’s halfway through their season. We certainly pushed ourselves to the limit. The quicker we get there the better. It’s about individuals getting fit. Some of the young lads were really good. We want to get a level of fitness and intensity in their game.” – Frank Lampard

Chelsea first-half XI (4-2-3-1): Caballero; Kenedy, Guehi, Azpilicueta, D Sterling; Ampadu, Drinkwater; Palmer, G Gallagher; Pedro; Batshuayi.

Chelsea second-half XI (4-1-4-1): Cumming; Maatsen, Zouma, Chalobah, Zappacosta; Bakayoko; Brown, Baker, Gilmour, Piazon; Ugbo.

Interestingcomments from Klopp on Brewster. Obviously not an option at the moment (he's not even been added to the game yet) but expect he will come in at 4.5 and an early injury to Firmino could make him an intriguing budget option.

“Rhian is a top striker,” said Klopp; “He is a top talent and I have told him already that he has an important role this year but how important depends on him. We will see. He has to play different positions – the centre, wing is possible I think, but there will be opportunities for him I am sure.”

We were close to losing him a while ago so Klopp has has to promise him opportunities. I hope he gets them, he's coming back from a nasty injury though too.

It’s so hard to say how good he can be but all of the top players seems to be close to him at the club which suggests he’s got something about him. Could be a potential bargain if Firmino gets injured, however at the moment you’d argue that first back-up is Origi’s to lose.

Is there any mileage in prioritising teams that have moved early in the market and look settled at the squad level? They have all preseason to work on systems and combinations

Leicester and Bournemouth (if they hang onto Fraser) look handy from this respect. WH too with the exception of a striker also look settled. Chelsea? ManU, Arsenal and Palace by contrast look horrid as they have presumably a couple of significant incomings on the distant horizon. Newcastle far worse of course.

I broadly agree and that makes Leicester and Bournemouth a good option. WH I'd want to see that striker situation sorted to say they were settled. I also think we're probably overlooking Watford and Wolves as quite settled sides (regardless of Europa).

Watford are creeping up on me as a source of 6.0 to 6.5 players early on. Doucore or Pereyra at 6.0 could be nice.

Looking at the teams I've included players from so far, it seems I've been broadly working on that premise. I was interested in Zaha, for example, before his transfer saga with Arsenal started. Even if he joined Arsenal now, I'm not sure if he'd be more attractive than he would be as Palace's main man.

Palace traditionally bomb at the start of every season. They also always move late in the market.

Their one major incoming last season was Meyer and he’s just given an interview saying his late move held him back. He could be very tasty this time at 5.5 if Roy decides he’s a starter over Schlupp and MacArthur

Had Vardy in my initial draft but trying another with Deeney/Delofeu in his place. Thoughts on this? Too much in defence maybe?

    Ryan
    TAA / VVD / Digne / Walker
Salah / Sterling / Siggy / Lucas Moura
    King / Deeney

    Cheap bench.

    Thanks!

King will probably be on pens for Bournemouth who are a very good attacking side. With VAR they could get a lot of pens next season. I think a strong defence is key as there are arguably more point to be had here than up front. Not sure on Lucas Moura, perhaps go with Zaha, Maddison, Tielemans or Perez?

Thoughts about this team? Will play 3-5-2:

    Fabianski (Ryan)
    TAA, VVD, Digne
Salah (c), Sterling, Bilva, Sigurdson, Perez
    Jota, Long
    Bench: Reid, Kelly, 4.5 striker

Thoughts on the below 5ATB team? Always start off with a 343 but think the pricing this year makes a back 5 a lot more viable:

    Ederson
    TAA Laporte VVD Digne Robbo
    Sterling Siggy Perez
    Vardy Wilson

No Salah is risky but like the look/balance of this team.

    Thoughts?

I think you need a Liverpool attacker in there, ideally Salah, so if you're keen on going heavy on defence then perhaps consider getting a 4.5 in from Burnley. They don't have a Europa League distraction and were much more solid/better in the second half of last season - Heaton/Pope are very good goalkeepers, it just isn't clear yet which one will be no.1. I'd also save 1.5m and go with King over Wilson because King takes pens and we've got VAR now. In short, if you can get Salah in, then you've got a class team.

I wouldn't be surprised if he and Gundogan rotate more this season. Pep's main challenge will be the Champion's League IMO and I reckon Gundogan will get more PL minutes and KdB be used in the CL.

Pep has always said league is the priority, but if Gundogan signs a new contract, which isn't definite but seems likely, he will be involved. I actually think it'll be David Silva's minutes he eats into, but that's just my opinion.

The key will be jumping on and off KDB at the right time. The guy picks up so many assists - if he plays regularly you can see him hitting 20.

Hmm, I didn't want to go 5 at the back, but the 6-7m defenders all seem like they will outscore easily the 6 - 7m mids and forwards..

    Ederson (4.0)
    Azpi - VVD - TTA - Coleman - Walker
    Siggy - Salah - KdB (4.5, 4.5)
    Vardy - King (4.5)

The game is evolving and past season's tactics might not be as dependable as they used to be. Defenders can offer more points per £ than cheap midfield players.

Indeed. Any defender I take out of the above will (should) score more than a mid/fwd of similar price.

People need to take into account how much VAR will change this game.

Sterling will be offside most of the time cutting his goal outcome by half this season.

Also may as well get a team full of penalty takers.

    VAR will ruin the PL

Ppl like rationalising not owning certain players. Kane at 11 is the cheapest he has been in years and will easily cross the 200 mark again if fit. Gonna leave him in my team and enjoy his returns and suck up the blanks that will occur(true of every player though)

          1. SADIO SANÉ
            • 8 Years

saying Ndombele will prevent him coming deeper is also rationalising owning him, no evidence of that being a thing

              • 14 Years

I'm not saying ndombele will improve anything. Just saying that Kane has been ignored on here mostly because it's virtually impossible to own Kane + Sterling + Salah. So you have to choose between the 2 of them and rationalise about not owning the 3rd. I'm to blame too since I've somehow rationalised and convinced myself that I don't need Sterling 🙂

Kane may score 200ish this season but at 11m (his cheapest price), it's still not enough. You have pool defenders scoring 200 at 7m, Mids like siggy and Fraser scoring 180 at 8m, strikers like Wilson, jimi scoring 175ish at 8m. If you do the math, Kane's 200 pts at 11m is still not enough. FPL HQ has been doing a pretty bad job of pricing the premium fwds very high or pricing defs too low. This season, they went some way to correct it by increasing all nailed gks and defs by 0.5 and reducing Kane to 11m. Still a long way to go.

Ndombele has been compared to Moussa Dembele - he rarely looses the ball and is very good at bringing said ball from def to the attacking players. He is also great at getting the ball back, is athletic...

Think he will improve Spurs in midfield and if it works his presence will allow Kane, Son, Eriksen to focus on attacking. More than last season.

Currently have Kane in as well as Salah and Sterling:

      Salah Sterling Jorginho
      Kane King

      4.0 4.5 4.5 4.5

Thing is I don’t think I’ll captain Kane over Salah or Sterling at any point, so let’s have your opinions on

"... Why not?". Because premium forwards, in general, aren't good value when compared to premium defenders or midfielders.

He is a wait and see for me. GW3 seems to me to be the perfect time to get him

I don't know about any of you...Kane failed the eye test for months & I think you'd all be better off with Auba/Mane/DeBruyne alongside Sterling/Salah. KDB will be in every team by gwk5.

Or Kane will be in everyone’s team by GW3 (NEW - H) if he scores 3 vs Villa and 1 at City.

Personally I think Kane, Auba, Mané & KDB all have too many questions marks to be selectable for GW1

        - Kane: last appearance in CL final he was in full-on carthorse mode - how long will he need to recover sharpness after all th injuries? And how long will he keep the sharpness if/when he’s gets it? And will Poch have him linking things more than being on the end of them?

        - Auba: his manager is a psychotic fraud who plays roulette as much as Pep

        - Mané: Prohibitive price and restricts a Liverpool defender

        - KDB: injuries and management mean he’ll surely be treated with kid gloves for a few games?

All are superb players, no doubts there, but I see better options for FPL personally

(now they’ll All hattrick GW1 lol)

Are you thinking 4-3 to Villa vs Spurs

Wouldn’t have a clue what the score will be tbh

This is basically how I feel on Kane at the moment.

Some superlative pre-season form - and seeing whatever ‘the Ndombele effect’ is in practice - would change my mind though. Fixtures too good to turn down if he looks sharp.
