Keen interest in new-look Chelsea side under Lampard

Bohemians 1-1 Chelsea

Goals: Michy Batshuayi

Assists: Kenedy

Fantasy Premier League managers were reminded of the wealth of options available to Frank Lampard’s Chelsea team in their first pre-season match.

With most of last season’s regulars absent, the Blues drew 1-1 with Irish side Bohemians on Wednesday evening.

The result was not too encouraging, but at this early stage of pre-season, it’s important not to read too much into such things.

Instead, it’s more important, especially in the case of Chelsea, to examine which players were and were not involved – as well as Lampard’s tactics.

At this admittedly early stage of his time as the Blues’ boss, he initially deployed his players in a 4-2-3-1 formation, finally taking the club away from Maurizio Sarri’s favoured 4-3-3.

A 4-1-4-1 was used in the second half, but this featured more peripheral figures.

Against Bohemians, Lampard also encouraged his players to apply a high press when they were without the ball and when in possession they were much more direct than in the 2018/19 season.

However, we will have to see these tactics utilised when more first-team players are involved before we can say with certainty that Lampard wants to use them in Gameweek 1.

As already mentioned, most of last season’s key assets were absent.

Antonio Rüdiger (£6.0m), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£6.5m) and Callum Hudson-Odoi (£6.0m) all missed out due to injury.

Meanwhile, Willian (£7.0m) and Christian Pulisic (£7.5m) are yet to join up with the squad after involvement in the Copa America and CONCACAF Gold Cup with Brazil and USA respectively.

Only six options currently priced up by FPL were in the matchday squad on Wednesday night. We have updated the Google spreadsheet cataloguing their pre-season minutes.

Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.0m) and Pedro (£7.0m) were the biggest names to feature from the start.

After 12 months of right-back duties under Sarri, new manager Frank Lampard returned Azpilicueta to a centre-back role, which could have some interesting implications for the rest of pre-season.

Obviously, there is still a long way to go, but if the Spaniard ends up being preferred at centre-back, it would leave a vacancy in the right-back position.

It was youngster Dujon Sterling who started there against Bohemians but Davide Zappacosta (£4.5m) was handed the role for the second half.

If the Italian were to hold down a starting position in the Chelsea defence this season he could provide exceptional value, so we should definitely continue to monitor him and Azpilicueta during pre-season.

Crucially, the match with Bohemians reminded Fantasy managers just how many players will be at Chelsea’s disposal in 2019/20.

Fantasy managers should track where Azpilicueta is stationed during pre-season matches this summer

It was Michy Batshuayi who scored their only goal of the game to highlight that the centre-forward battle is between three players for the 2019/20 season.

Olivier Giroud (£7.0m) is the only one to have been priced up by FPL so far but Tammy Abraham and Batshuayi, returning from loans at Aston Villa and Crystal Palace respectively, will also be in the fight.

Monitoring each of these players during pre-season will be vital, to see which one claims the number one spot given the potential bargain on offer.

In defence, former Newcastle loanee Kenedy was deployed at left-back to throw his name into the hat for competition there.

Marcos Alonso (£6.5m) already faces the challenge of Emerson Palmieri (£5.5m) so there is definitely uncertainty on that side of the defence, although Kenedy is also capable of playing on the left of midfield.

As Fantasy managers clamour for Everton assets, especially in defence, Chelsea’s match in Ireland provided a chastening reminder of the Toffees’ missing puzzle piece.

Kurt Zouma (not currently priced by FPL) was deployed at centre-back in the second half as his future continues to hang in the balance.

Marco Silva is reportedly hoping to bring the Frenchman to Goodison Park on a permanent deal but this pre-season will give us an indication of whether Lampard will let him do that.

If he starts getting regular game-time in the pre-season friendlies, it might suggest the new Blues boss would rather keep hold of him.

This would be a blow to Silva and Everton, as well as Fantasy managers looking to the Toffees defence as Zouma was a key factor in them keeping eight clean sheets in their last 11 matches of 2018/19.

Also worth tracking during pre-season is the versatile Ethan Ampadu (£4.5m).

The former Exeter City man is also capable of playing at centre-back but has historically been used in a deep central midfield role at Chelsea.

Against Bohemians, Ampadu helped screen the defence and earned high praise from the local press, who described the bite and aggression he added to midfield as something Chelsea missed under Sarri.

Meanwhile, as promised, Danny Drinkwater (£4.5m) was given an opportunity by Lampard after being forced very much out of contention by Sarri last season and Willy Caballero (£5.0m) played 45 minutes in goal.

“Fitness was our issue, we’ve been working hard on it, even this morning. Fitness was always going to be an issue against a team that’s halfway through their season. We certainly pushed ourselves to the limit. The quicker we get there the better. It’s about individuals getting fit. Some of the young lads were really good. We want to get a level of fitness and intensity in their game.” – Frank Lampard

Chelsea first-half XI (4-2-3-1): Caballero; Kenedy, Guehi, Azpilicueta, D Sterling; Ampadu, Drinkwater; Palmer, G Gallagher; Pedro; Batshuayi.

Chelsea second-half XI (4-1-4-1): Cumming; Maatsen, Zouma, Chalobah, Zappacosta; Bakayoko; Brown, Baker, Gilmour, Piazon; Ugbo.

      Sterling + Salah + Kane = daft

The only thing that makes the big guns worth getting is the captaincy factor. When you have three of them, you won't be captaining each as often, and so they won't be worth the cash you spend on them.

Are Pogba and Jimenez being overlooked? Their expected points are relatively high for the first 6. The kind of players that will do well and we'll all be bemoaning the lucky casuals who have them.

I would be amazed if Zinchenko started the season. He didn't let them down last season and was integral to their winning streak. Mendy has been a nuisance off the pitch, and Pep has gone public about this. Looks like it's Zinchenko's spot to lose.

Sorry I did not pay much attention to him last season so I'm confused. Why did Deulofeu only play 2000 minutes last season? Injury? Fitness? Rotation? I don't know who to choose between him and Deeney. (I already have Brooks and Wilson so King would be overkill)

    1. Brosstan
      • 9 Years

Because hes not nailed first choice. Hes a rotation player and if Deeney and Gray play together theres not much space for him. Deeney is the captain and has been on record saying he enjoys playing with Gray. No idea why people are going for Deu.. he will probably play only like 60-70% of minutes over the first 10 gws.

He only started playing as part of a front two in the second half of the season .His finishing and decision making is improving and with Watfords decent fixtures i think he is worth a punt at the start of the season.

    Ederson-Button
    VVD-TAA-Luiz-Zinchenko-Kelly
    Salah-Kdb-Siggy-Tielemans-Doncke
    King-Vardy-Wickham

Defenders at 6m get way more points than attackers at that price

And Mendy the remaining 28, I imagine. Good point if you mean he's not nailed, but I don't think it'll be 10-28 frankly. I expect more somthhing like 22-16.

          In ff terms maybe.

In football terms mendy gives the ball away too much for a pep team. Which means he won't play. Which means not so great in ff terms.

My point is mendy might be better ff wise when playing, but pep doesn't care about ff.

Something has got to give as your fourth mid is a 2 pointer each week.
Even playing both of 4th and 5th defenders each week for 432 doesn't really work either. Need 11 not 10

Trying to figure out how to fit in Sterling, Salah, Vardy, TAA, and Robbo. I like the balance without Sterling better but that seems like a dangerous game to play. Thoughts on A or B?

    A: Ryan/Sterling + total bench fodder
    B: Pickford/Zinchecnko/Siggy

To pull it off it looks like:

    Ryan
    Coleman/Robbo/TAA
    Fraser/Jorginho/Sterling/Salah/Tielemans
    King/Vardy

    Keepers interesting this year.
I always went 4.5 keeper but some recent evidence that a premium keeper might be worth it.
I won't go Allison or Ederson
As 3 spots needed elsewhere for those teams.
At 5.5 Lloris and Pickford look good consistent points scorers.
Fab is an FPL legend and should easily be worth 5.0
Then to stay cheap Pope could be great and that's where I think I will go as I can't help trying to go cheap on the keeper

Aswell as hating spending money on keepers do we ever get around to making that keeper transfer either - there always seems to be something more pressing. So thinking Fab from GW1 how many save points against City ??

Yeah it's been terrible when I've done it as well but I'm just suggesting you play Pope to cover the two bad fixtures and Fabianski the rest of the time. If you're anything like me it will be a miracle if you haven't wildcarded by week 10.

      choices for me:
      4.5 Pope (or Heaton)
      5.0 Fabianski
5.5 Lloris (already going Azpi in defense, so no Kepa for me)
      6.0 Ederson

        Yeah got Azpi too.
Fab is proven a few years now. With a handful of clean sheet he get about 150 purely on save points which is pretty astonishing I think he is the one to have and very nice fixtures. I think I will eek out the .5 to go Pope to Fab.

Rumours on twitter that FPL towers have switched to an API system and blocked access to data. I wonder if this means we won't be able to track risers/fallers - would make the game more refreshing in my view.

FPLTowers should be treated with absolute contempt; like all secret societies, like the Masons, the Templars, Skull and Bones and the Bank of England.

And all those maggots down at Bohemian Grove worshiping a giant Stone Owl.

I dont know what it means myself, just assumed restrictions would be imposed on their data from what was tweeted.

“... Rumours on twitter that FPL towers have switched to an API system ...”. FPL has used an API for several years. Can’t comment on the blocking though.

not a fan of keeper rotation myself
and don't know if you really want to go double WestHam defense

even though I think Rashford is a bit overpriced, I think he could do very well

If you have Ryan there for week 1 don't do it.
Zaha wait and see. He is in my draft too.
Rash logic says good but points per minute not that great.

I am saying don't get him for just week 1. .5 mil stuck on the bench mostly thereafter.

I need TWO of the following wastemen to feature prominently in mach day squads for the first 3-6GW.... how do you rate my chance?

    Dendonker
    Hayden
    Kelly
    Greenwood
    Wickham

Feel good about Dendo, but 1 from the other 4 doesn't look good...

I've only got Dendoncker in for bench cover/saving costs, likewise Kelly (who I'm not sure about starts-wise but is cheap). Wouldn't like to rely on the others.

I'm feeling better and better about it; enables 2x liverpool defence, city defence, Sterling, KDB, Salah, and Kane!

Had Vardy in for kane 10 mins ago and better fodder players but i do like the Kane dif'.

That looks really interesting alternative on the cheap forward scenario to fund the big mids. Would you mind posting your team? I have Kane and struggling to get sterling alongside KDB & Salah. Hoping Kane bangs at start to steal some ground or then switch to Vardy in a few and pick up another mid

What are people's thoughts on planning for a transfer in GW2 already?

Thinking of leaving 0.5m so I can go from Lucas Moura to Sigurdsson in GW2 (when Spurs are at City). Thoughts?

    Ederson
    TAA / VVD / Digne / Zinchenko
    Salah / Sterling / Tielemans / Moura
    King / Deeney

    Thanks!
