The tough task facing new Brighton manager Potter

Despite some minor Fantasy interest in his players, new Brighton manager Graham Potter might find it tough to transform their Fantasy Premier League appeal for the new season.

The Seagulls currently sit fourth on the Season Ticker for the first six Gameweeks of 2019/20 and there has been some early interest in their defence.

Watford, Southampton and Burnley are Brighton’s first three opponents at the Amex Stadium, while the first six Gameweeks will see them travel to Watford, Manchester City and Newcastle.

As things stand, both of the Seagulls’ goalkeepers Mat Ryan (£4.5m) and David Button (£4.0m) are in the top four most popular in their position.

22.7% of managers are in possession of the latter, while Brighton’s Australian international Ryan sits in 16.9% of squads.

However, there is plenty of work to be done in Sussex for Potter and his new players to avoid relegation.

Brighton’s second stab at Premier League football was a tricky one, especially towards the end.

They won just three of the last 23 league matches of the season and stayed up by the skin of their teeth, helped by Cardiff City’s failed recovery bid.

We are continuing our ‘Numbers Game’ series with a look at the Seagulls’ underlying data across the pitch in 2018/19 to assess their potential for the new campaign.

I think Lampard will do a great job at Chelsea.

Youth playing Champions League football and without pressure can only be a good thing for the club.

As a United fan I'm a little more concerned.

Kane and Kun seriously overlooked this season. Don't know why people would buy defenders at a high price and neglect premium forwards.

Because we look at the points the top defenders accrued last season and do the maths.

But we don’t pick a team and leave it all year. Unless you are going for a ghost team.

Not saying it won’t work, but you need to look more short term than long term.

          exactly this

it would however be a sad thing if a zombie team with 5 premium defenders ends up in let's say the top50 overall

Because premium defenders matched those strikers points output for half their price.

Two premium mids smashed those strikers points wise too.

The facts show that premium strikers aren't the best value for money for ppm.

Coupled with the fact that most everyone who doesn't have either of those two will almost certainly have Salah and Sterling and will surely be captaining one of those two every week.

And unless you're going to captain your 11/12m striker every week what's the point of having him?

Truth is that there are cheaper options up top that won't be too far behind, points wise, who will enable players to significantly improve other areas of their teams

Some people will still want the security of an expensive premium striker, but most managers have seen the trends and moved away from that template

Yes but you can't have them all.

I and many like me have opted to go for Sterling because his goals are worth more and he gets CS points.

Ultimately everyone has to make their own mind up on how they want their team set up and everyone's going to have an opinion on which strategy is best.

Once the games start we'll know better which is the best route to go down.

I’ve got them all on my currently favoured draft with the sacrifice of Romeu/Donkey being a 2 pointer. There’s no wiggle room of course. So possible rather than ideal and I may yet go for the balanced team.

My biggest doubt about two cheapies up top is how they could swallow transfers chasing hauls. Thats what happened to me last season with Ings and Mitro etc until I lucked out by hitting Jim relatively early

Kun is no spring chicken and will, most likely, increasingly have his minutes managed. Could end up with his lowest score come the end of the season.

      Kane yes
      Aguero no

Aguero is over priced, cannot see any reason to go with him when sterling always outscores him at the same price point and Kane over the years has outscored him for 1m less. They messed up the aguero pricing.

I'd love to own Kane but atm I like Vardy & Wilson up top to begin with and Kane has burned me a number of times captaining against so called "lesser" teams.

Last season yes. We take into account TAA has matured as a player over the year and is less likely to be rotated and maybe outscore Robbo this year.

Anyone keen on Rashford at 8.5?

He’ll be on free kicks and maybe Pens at times and will probably be ManU’s main man for goals this year.

I know United’s run of fixtures and their team has been average of late... but they were a CL Semi final team nonetheless...keen on your thoughts...

    1. pingissimus

Gunn is an interesting one. Soton defence was very leaky last time out. But there must be a chance that a full preseason with Ralph and his new system could turn things around.

The downer if you’re looking to hold WC awhile is the fixture list which turns horribly quite quickly

Agreed, I think people have been picking Ryan based on him being nailed, whereas Heaton/Pope, Boruc/Begovic and Gunn/McCarthy are all unknown right now, and also Ryan's back up is 4.0m. But I think the other clubs will have a settled keeper by the end of pre-season, and Brighton have City, Tottenham and Chelsea in the opening 8 games, that's not a good start.

Personally I see Brighton, along with Norwich as certainties for relegation.

B.Silva doesn’t ‘cover’ Sterling, which must be the only reason you are including him in your comparison.

City can often score 3, 4 or 5 goals with B.Silva getting no more than an solitary assist or less. It’s rare Sterling wouldn’t be very involved when there are multiple goals.

    Which one?

    A. Sterling, VVD, Zinchenko + Dendoncker (only possibly playing benchplayer)

    B. KDB (if fit), VVD, Zinchenko + 7.0 mid (Zaha/Willian/etc)

    C. BSilva, Robertson(if fit), Laporte + 7.0 mid (Zaha/Willian/etc)

In B and C the 7.0 mid be rotated with Deulo, King, Tielemans depending on the fixture...

    So as it's not possible to have everyone, what are people missing out on in their current drafts;

    A. Salah
    B. Sterling
    C. Kane
    D. Premium defence (basically double Liverpool defence + Digne)

*I've been away for a week, so the template might have changed, but I doubt it.
Also, any reasn Abrahams hasn't been added yet, he's playing pre-season games for Chelsea?

          Salah Sterling Tielemans 6.0

Yes, I think I probably would just about prefer Sigurdsson and Vardy too.
Top scoring 6m mid last year (Townsend) got 50 point less that Sigurdsson...so can Kane get 50 points more than Vardy this year?
Also not easy to identify who might be the top scoring 6m mid this year either I guess.

Still seems bizarre to me to have Digne in this company.

Robbo TAA Mo Sterling Kane is doable with 5.5 defender (Zin Trips Coleman) and 4.5 keeper and 10.5 on a mid and defender. Get Vvd instead then you have Digne too instead of 5.5

So if you play Stephens Romeu or Donkey for a 2 pointer you get an extra 6.0 defender. Play O’Connell or Dunk you get a 6.0 mid

There was a hot topic about Dignes numbers a couple of weeks ago by a poster named 'fantasyfreak', that basically nailed Digne in my team.

The trouble I have is that I see such good value in some if the options around 7m (Zaha as a midfielder I think is great value, as is Digne, as is whoever starts up front for Chelsea for 7m)
That ruins the ability to get all 4 of the options I've mentioned in my OP. I can't decide where to sacrifice.

        1. pingissimus
          • 5 Years

The only sacrifice here is accepting one player is s 2 pointer. Worse things in life.

          Heaton
          TAA Robbo Digne Zinchenko
          Mo Sterling Perez/Tielemans Romeu/Donkey
          Kane King

Don’t see Zaha as attractive until and unless Palace replace Bat on a like for like basis. A minor loss I’d say.

I have all four, which you can do if you chose one 5.5 defender (Trippier/Coleman/Wan Bis) in a 442...

        • 9 Years
        4 years, 9 months ago

Yes, I have made it work, but then you have to have no bench (as we currently don't have a playing 4m defender, or 4.5m forward)...and you have to go with someone like Norwood, or Dendocker actually starting every week, I'm undecided if it's worth the trade off, as I think there are a lot of good value players around the 7m mark - Perez, Tielemans, Zaha, Chelsea forwards...even potentially a Martial/James if they nail down a spot.

      I agree with you.
Expect 10 goals from midfield, with a few VAR assisted penalty assists from Wilf this year.
As Bambi said the AFCON involvement isn't helping his chances of starting GW1, however I think if he's still at Palace, then he's too important to them not to play.

        1. HamezMace

          4 years, 9 months ago

Hello sir! Haven't had the chance to congratulate you since No.6! So I'll do it now....Congratulations! Very well deserved.

...my draft...is all over the place, as mentioned above I'm torn between going Salah, Sterling, Kane...with a sprinkling of 1x Liverpool defender, Digne, and some dross 5/6m mids/forwards.
Or the value players I'm seeing, Zaha, Chelsea striker, Perez...which means one of the three has the drop out...but I can't decide. I need some pre-season matches to help me.

          Currently,
          Rotating 4.5s
          Digne, VvD, Trippier, Taylor
          Salah, Sterling, Zaha, Perez
          Kane, King
          (greenwood, dendocker, 4.0m)

But nowhere near final, just playing around still.

          You having any more luck?

            Nice one mate 🙂

That looks quite good for now but as you say, pre-season will help. The midfield is very strong! My advice would be to double up on Pool defence though, with TAA being a must have.

I made my first draft over the weekend.

            Pope
            Trent Robbo Zinchenko Digne
            Salah KDB Siggy Moura
            Vardy King

Allows me to have Moura for the plum game while WHU have a toughie, then switching to Felipe.

Vardy also looks like a great options, as does Sigurdsson.
Interesting on KdB over Sterling too, he looks a great price at 9.5m, but I think Sterling will be worth the extra over the season.

Good to see you around again, I'll look out for your informative posts over the next few weeks, whilst I wrestle with my team.

No, I've gone with Kane up top.

Salah has the most points and most goals since he came back to England. Going without him will make things difficult in my opinion. It's not far fetched that he will score big against Norwich, how would you get him for Saints?

Ill captain Sterling for GW2 against Spurs. Im happy to go without Salah as I trust the Pool triple defensive up. Don't forget before the start of last nearly everyone was saying how essential Salah was and it turned out they were completely wrong. It was only at Xmas onwards for a two month stretch where you got burnt not having him.
