The tough task facing new Brighton manager Potter

Despite some minor Fantasy interest in his players, new Brighton manager Graham Potter might find it tough to transform their Fantasy Premier League appeal for the new season.

The Seagulls currently sit fourth on the Season Ticker for the first six Gameweeks of 2019/20 and there has been some early interest in their defence.

Watford, Southampton and Burnley are Brighton’s first three opponents at the Amex Stadium, while the first six Gameweeks will see them travel to Watford, Manchester City and Newcastle.

As things stand, both of the Seagulls’ goalkeepers Mat Ryan (£4.5m) and David Button (£4.0m) are in the top four most popular in their position.

22.7% of managers are in possession of the latter, while Brighton’s Australian international Ryan sits in 16.9% of squads.

However, there is plenty of work to be done in Sussex for Potter and his new players to avoid relegation.

Brighton’s second stab at Premier League football was a tricky one, especially towards the end.

They won just three of the last 23 league matches of the season and stayed up by the skin of their teeth, helped by Cardiff City’s failed recovery bid.

We are continuing our ‘Numbers Game’ series with a look at the Seagulls’ underlying data across the pitch in 2018/19 to assess their potential for the new campaign.

I think fpl priced tielemans at 6.5 to distract us from perez. They couldn't change perez's price after joining leicester so they made tielemans more appealing. Tielemans is a trap in comparison to perez imo.

People sleepwalking that Villa were scoring for fun and have 3rd richest owners in UK and want to make assault on the league and we nothing like Fulham situation. Some Villa players seriously underpriced

Villa were the worst of the promoted sides last season - and Fulham proved that wealth isn't the most important factor in staying up.

This time last season on here, nearly everyone was afraid to go without Salah and were saying how essential he was. It turned out those who went without Salah up until the Bournemouth game did better generally speaking. The Salah no-owners were only burnt by not having him for a 2 month period over Xmas time onwards. And yet one season on, history repeats itself and 99% of the teams in here have Salah. Triple Pool defence is the answer! Preach!

Ake is not a city-level player tho imo. And he is left footed. Stones hype would be more if he was there
Pep has shown he wants 1 left foot and 1 right foot CBs

Some FPL managers seems to be setting up teams for the entire season, arguing that different players are seriously overlooked or that others are underpriced. So what if Che Adams or other players will over-perform during the entire season? It's the start of the season that matters.

And I've through the years been trying to find that particular player ready for his big breakthrough, obviously scoring in GW1, 2 and 3. I was never close to picking Michu in my initial team, but I've been picking Danny Graham, Steven Fletcher, Mauro Boselli and the likes, expecting them to hit the ground running. It never ever happens.

If an underpriced gem, like Mahrez or Jimi, reveals himself, he's only 1 transfer away. It's no big deal, really.

Therefore, the main lesson for me going into the season is: avoid the punts, avoid the insecurities (both teams and players), avoid the players just coming back from big tournaments, go for the secure, the well rested, the proven, the seasoned. It sounds easy, right?

After a few weeks the picture will be much clearer and if panic is looming in your squad just wildcard...

      Yeah I agree, I 'm looking 4 GWs ahead

I get what you're saying, and I guess it depends what type of FPL player you are, but for me, its the ideal time right now to take 1 or 2 punts. If you get it right, you'll be 10-15 points up before everyone owns him and probably get a few prices rises too.

I think I’ll end up squeezing one punt in - O’Connell quite possibly.

Rationale is that my current team structure with multiple big hitters means one likely 2 pointer anyway. I’m drawn to the potential upside and see only a minor downside - a couple of clean sheets over 4/5 weeks isn’t much.

It’s also more fun! I’m just not excited by universal “safe” picks.

Fair enough. I guess that having the right expectations is key.

If you have a striker (Danny Graham, Boselli, Fletcher, etc) and he scores 10 goals/season you can't expect him to score more than once every 3,8 games... I always fall into the trap of expecting goals galore from gameweek 1.

Yeah the fact that there are notably more fallers than risers means more likely to need surgery to avoid losses than missing gains (which have to double to become bankable value) so a safety first approach is probably more favourable, then an early wildcard. The gains are often marginal too: boring players like vertoghen or ederson or even Coleman are pretty safe to get reasonable scores even if unlikely to smash it out the park, hence heavy defence synonymous with this approach. It is a game though at the end of the day, so can understand the smugness of discovering the next mahrez, or being the first on Jones in 17/18 who seemed a rotation risk but wasn't is arguably worth a few fletchers!

      1. Nickemon
        • 14 Years
        4 years, 8 months ago

It IS a game... you're right. But I want to get in on the gems as they're revelaed, not discover them myself.

...that being said, I am currently on King - Jota and possibly Barnes/Deufoleu as my forwards; probably undermining my argument altogether.

        1. Markus
          • 14 Years
          4 years, 8 months ago

Nah, I was on Barnes before the Rodriguez transfer as the definition of boring but safe pick. All those others are that too really, they're not going to be this season's mahrez (Jota best chance at notably over-scoring) but they will tick by at reasonable value, and play, until a chelsea striker/adams/wesley or mid replacement becomes an apparent goldmine. Until you can pick winners confidently, I'm with you, don't think worth the risk. But notice your 9 badge too, I think there's a certain risk aversion that comes with experience...

            I guess so.

I'm pretty risk avert and always has been. I have a mate that's the opposite; he loves a punt. That's why he captained Chris Eagles at one point, getting him a solid 2 pointer x 2. 😀

    2. pingissimus
      • 5 Years

      Nice.

I’m working on similar lines. I’d lose one of those defenders personally. Andone could be a smart call but again I’d lose him to a 4.5 to help fund another premium defender.

I’m working on the basis that a putative extra transfer with a stronger starting team outweighs the marginal benchboptions who are only ever going to be a likely 2 points.

    3. Yordan Letchkov

      Thanks for the comments.
I think the main question here is if the 4.5 defenders in rotation and Kane/Andone (who will hopefully get more starts) can compensate the missing heavy weight defenders from LIV and City.
I still think about to bring a LIV or City defender in by downgrading Pereyra and Andone.

I read earlier the amount, 25m, is acceptable, but the payment structure isn't to Celtic. I expect it'll get sorted in the next week, but yeah - Arsenal need 1 or 2 in. There is a large Ramsey shaped hole in their midfield now, IMO.
