The tough task facing new Brighton manager Potter

Despite some minor Fantasy interest in his players, new Brighton manager Graham Potter might find it tough to transform their Fantasy Premier League appeal for the new season.

The Seagulls currently sit fourth on the Season Ticker for the first six Gameweeks of 2019/20 and there has been some early interest in their defence.

Watford, Southampton and Burnley are Brighton’s first three opponents at the Amex Stadium, while the first six Gameweeks will see them travel to Watford, Manchester City and Newcastle.

As things stand, both of the Seagulls’ goalkeepers Mat Ryan (£4.5m) and David Button (£4.0m) are in the top four most popular in their position.

22.7% of managers are in possession of the latter, while Brighton’s Australian international Ryan sits in 16.9% of squads.

However, there is plenty of work to be done in Sussex for Potter and his new players to avoid relegation.

Brighton’s second stab at Premier League football was a tricky one, especially towards the end.

They won just three of the last 23 league matches of the season and stayed up by the skin of their teeth, helped by Cardiff City’s failed recovery bid.

We are continuing our ‘Numbers Game’ series with a look at the Seagulls’ underlying data across the pitch in 2018/19 to assess their potential for the new campaign.

Norwood, or Jorginho (depending on his role in preseason)

          Not really.
Digne is an absolute lock in my team, so no I wouldn't recommend losing him.
Norwood is basically an enabler, on set plays, so might get a few assists, but at that price, you're pretty limited.
          I like the team overall.

                  Badly!
I can't eliminate one Salah, Sterling or Kane, and having all three really weakens the overall team, so need some preseason games to happen to see who looks like good budget options.

I think it you are prepared to take a gamble on jorginho you can get a decent team with the 3 big hitters in it

I'm not sure I am though.
I think Zaha, and Perez/Tielemans are too good value to say no.
So a midfield of Salah, Sterling, Zaha and Perez
+Kane, King, and Giroud (or whoever starts for Chelsea) doesn't leave much in defence.

Wolves and West Ham defenders in a rotation avoid the top 6 all season.

      • 5 Years
      4 years, 8 months ago

I wanted to go with that as my keeper partnership but its just a bit too expensive. I also think Wolves defenders aren't going to be the assets they were last season and West Ham can't be relied on for a clean sheet (probably more likely against top 6 teams! they always choke in 'easy' games)

Palace and Everton also offers the same thing so that may be a more viable rotation pairing

    2. LangerznMash
      • 7 Years

True but wolves don't have a sub £5.0m starter, not many happy having a rotation pair costing £9.5m+ ,
Ideally my rotation pair will cost only £8.5m if preseason unearths a £4.0m starter.

Pros: Despite the price increase, he is still a much better asset than any other striker available at that price or less

Cons: He eats up budget over the options by being high mid-range rather than just a normal mid-range option like King
He is playing in the Europa League this year which may impact on his fitness, which may then impact on his PL performances
He is the most owned striker by about 20% (some will be auto-complete) in a season where there isn't too much deviation in lineups at the start of the season

It really is. I wanted Robbo over Van D because of the huge potential for assists and because he was higher owned than Trent. I just can't find a way for myself to put two LIV defenders into my team without making too many compromises elsewhere in the team

Bruce resigns as Sheff Wed manager, looks like the Wednesday faithful are getting the full Ashley experience of how to take a manager for as cheap as (potentially) possible, all other chairmen should be forewarned that low ball transfer offers will be offered by NUFC once Brucie is installed.

He has probably been knackered at the start of every season and possibly taken a while to get up to the required fitness. He's had the first summer off in ages. I think he may start the season strongly

          He'll do well.

But for me the problem lies in the question. Kane OR Sterling?

The fact that it's hard to have both means I go for the City option as they score more goals and Raz gets CS points too.

If Son stays fit he's s viable cheaper alternative to Kane. The same can't be said in reverse about Sterling.

Kane for me, had a decent lay off with only a few games in between. Can see him Winning back the golden boot this year. KDB won't outscore Sterling but KDB + 2.5 elsewhere probably does as long as you have decent captain options

I've no idea, i don't follow Saint's that much - had a look at results 2nd half of last year and they either lined up with a 3-4-2-1 with Redmond in behind or some games played 2 up top with redmond wide...

Depends how Che Adams gets settled maybe - they could always continue to play a 3-4-2-1 with Redmond/Adams in behind ings/austin... Don't get the feeling Armstrong is dead on for a starter

Patience is the issue for sure. I am trying to tell myself to stay strong and dont deviate from the structure even if someone like Sterling or Aguero bangs them in from the start. I have left myself an opening to get Kane in if he looks good in the first 2 matches but Im not really considering Sterling or Aguero.

You're paying a premium on players and ignoring any new arrivals. Loads of value in all Villa attacking mids. Probably some Norwich too but don't know them as well. I've 7k and 1k finish last 3 seasons and as a rule never pay more than 4.5m for 3rd-5th def not to say that only way to succeed but more flexibility

depends on your play style of course. If you want to go with a set-and-forget 4 premium player defense...this might be the season to do it. Use your FT's to change between inform mids and forwards

You can downgrade your premium defenders if it doesnt work out and get 4.5m defenders.
Also this year the 4.5m defenders are much worse than past 2 seasons.

I think the price points this season have a lot to do with that tactic being employed.

Basically, a £5m defender now is almost guaranteed to outscore any £5m striker and will probably outscore most 5m mids too. That's not always been the case in previous seasons.

Also, previously we've been able to get in good mids at what would be considered now to be ridiculously cheap prices, so looking at lineups from previous seasons is slightly skewed because of this.

That all means that it makes more sense to some to get a 4th defender than a 5th mid or 3rd striker.

I've spotted a proper oop player - Keinan Davis of Villa, an out and out centre forward is listed as a 4.5m mid! As far as I know, he's never played in midfield.

Shame he won't get any starts, barring several injuries...!!

But Donker is not a fodder option per se. He can get you 2 points from the bench which is much better than the very likely 0 Keinan Davis gets

This got lost in the pack earlier.

So my currently team is as follows:

    Allison
    Walker/TAA/digne
    Salah/kdb/siggy/Perez
    Vardy/king/mcgoldrick

    Subs: button/diop/elmo/dendonker

What changes should I make here. I’m not a fan of mcgoldrick but I have 5.5 to spend on the 3rd striker and he seems most likely to play. Any feedback would be helpful. Thanks

I don't like the McGoldrick pick either (he's in my watchlist to put in if he starts brightly.) To increase your budget, I'd possibly downgrade Siggy to Fraser/Dilva/Milivojevic and then upgrade Goldrick to a 6.0/6.5 asset

I’m not a fan of Allison as a pool spot. Won’t get anywhere near the main 3pool def spots in terms of points after attacking returns and baps. I’d downgrade Mcgoldrick to fodder and change your formation to 442 upgrading Diop. Just my thoughts.

Fabianski is in my team long term. West Ham is a wild card defensively, but I am willing to take the risk. Hopefully Diop and Balbuena will be a bit more solid this year, after making their debuts last year.

Feeling fairly confident with this, what's everyone's thoughts?

    Pope, Button
    TAA, Robbo, Dunk, Targett, Kelly
    Salah, KDB, Siggy, Perez, Dedonk
    Kane, King, Chicharito

Dunk looks a bargain if he replaces Maguire. Chicharito will change if they sign a new forward. Might find away of upgrading Targett to Zinchenko if he looks first choice.

considering their first 6 fixtures...I reckon Dunk would get more points at Brighton than at Leicester. Might bring him in on a WC later on.
I agree in thinking Chicarito won't be a starter..but I think the new striker will be 7.0 or 7.5...so not a straight swap

      1. Holteenderinthesky

Will look elsewhere if a new forward comes in for Chicharito. Have a feeling Leicester are going to have a decent season. Don't actually think Leicester fixtures are as hard as they look. Europa teams always struggle at the start of the season. A Hazardless Chelsea definitely won't be as dangerous. Then two decent games

The guy can't win, last season he's a bad option because he's been away at the WC all summer, this season he's a bad option because he's had the summer off.

I see the same logic being applied to fixtures..Villa GW1, well Villa will of course be buzzing about being back in the PL, and will play their hearts out.
Of course, we need to captain Salah because he's got Norwich at home, and their just a bunch of Championship amateurs.

I can only assume you're talking about times he's been rushed back from injury because Spurs have no other strikers available to them, and he's obviously been less effective because he's not 100% fit.

Yes, that's what history allows you to do. Make informed decisions with data. This is why newly promoted teams and players just bought in from other leagues (unless they're a Messi etc.) are considered punts - no data. Ignore the point made though despite it was you who just asked me what it is based on.

My last comment was obviously tongue in cheek regarding Sturridge.

I take your point about history/data etc, and honestly I don't have the time, or rather the inclination to go back and search for the other factors involving the start Kane made to seasons 16/17, 17/18 - for examples, fixtures, minutes etc.

It just seems like you're repeating the 'Kane doesn't do well in August' rhetoric, that is oh so popular in the football world.

Also, seriously, I don't look at stats from players from three years ago and include that in any decision making process for the season ahead.

He is a a viable option this year ppm, unlike last year, if captaining every so often. And that's the reason why I'm not convinced you can justify immediately, in that Salah (who indisputably I think is expected to outscore him over the season) has amazing fixtures to start. It's then a shootout between sterling and Kane for gw4-10, and I think sterling edges it for me. I fully anticipate Kane (and Auba) scoring 200, but he will need to score more like 240 to justify inclusion unless Salah/sterling flop which there are no signs to indicate that happening.

What fpl impact can you see Steve Bruce to Newcastle, having on the Newcastle defenders?

If he can keep their existing defenders they should be ok. Everyone is predicting doom, but I will wait to see what happens pre-season.

Do we reckon Sane will get any real game time this year? Or just a string of games every now and then to keep him happy. Bayern are in for him apparently so he may opt to leave. Mahrez may also want to leave.

Mahrez wasted his career going to a club where he will be second fiddle. Hope he leaves, waste of talent.

100% tho some players are happy enough to sit on the bench week in week out picking up a hefty wage

He has been there 1 year and barely plays. He will want to leave this summer if he isn't assured of starts. He doesn't seem to be one to just like being on the bench.

I think Sané and Mahrez will basically fairly evenly share their position in the starting 11 with Sterling occasionally letting them play together when rested, with B.Silva playing deeper.

I keep switching between which promoted teams I expect to perform the best. Norwich are the most obvious candidates but I think their defence will be dismal. Villa have a really nice midfield but I'm not convinced by the rest of the squad. Sheffield Utd's season will depend on how well their gimmick translates to the PL. They all have excellent managers, would be surprised to see any get sacked.

I think villa will defo start the best but I feel Norwich will finish the highest out of the 3

Can see Sheffield starting the season well and then it'll start going downhill when teams find them out(also their fixtures are garbage gw 6 to 14 or so). But they have a good manager and I can see them adjusting and doing OK. Villa look like they are taking a huge risk buying players without prem experience. If it works it works and el ghazi could be the next mahrez. Else they may be in for a shock. Norwich don't have fixtures in their favor to build momentum and their defense always looks suspect. Can see them struggling a bit tbh

I've seen Chris Wilder save Northampton from the jaws of extinction with my own eyes, I have no doubt he can keep Sheffield United in the PL, it'll be a much easier job, trust me.
