Mane a doubt for Gameweek 1 as Senegal make AFCON final

The Gameweek 1 availability of Sadio Mane (£11.5m) must surely be in question after Senegal made it through to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time since 2002.

Senegal face Algeria in Friday’s final, which is staged exactly three weeks before Liverpool’s season-opening fixture against Norwich City.

Jurgen Klopp appears to be giving all of his players a three-week break following their international exertions this summer – as happened with several players after the 2018 World Cup – and Mane’s delayed departure from Egypt casts into doubt his chances of featuring against the newly promoted Canaries, at least from the start.

It’s not just Mane who is representing his country at the Africa Cup of Nations, of course, and we’ll be bringing you up to date on the other FPL assets involved at the quarter-final and semi-final stages in the Scout Notes article below.

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Egypt bowed out of the competition at the round-of-16 stage.

Senegal 1-0 Benin
Senegal 1-0 Tunisia (after extra-time)

Mane was heavily involved in Senegal’s quarter-final win over Benin, teeing up Everton’s Idrissa Gueye (£5.0m) for the match-winning goal and seeing two strikes of his own chalked off after VAR intervention.

Mane lasted the whole 90 minutes, along with Cheikhou Kouyate (£5.0m) – again playing at centre-half – and Newcastle United’s forgotten man Henri Saivet.

Gueye was withdrawn just before the game entered stoppage time.

The Lions of Teranga then saw off Tunisia in a tense semi-final, with the game going to extra-time after a goalless 90 minutes.

Dylan Bronn headed into his own net to give Senegal the victory, although Mane had earlier wasted an excellent chance when screwing a shot wide after rounding Tunisia goalkeeper Mouez Hassan.

That was the Liverpool winger’s only attempt on goal in the entire game and he was perhaps more peripheral than he had been throughout the tournament.

The former Southampton man also ceded penalty-taking duties after two misses from the spot in the tournament, allowing Saivet to step up from 12 yards in the 80th minute – only for the Newcastle man to see his effort saved.

Mane said:

It’s a momentary withdrawal. I have missed penalties in both games and must admit that it is not a good ratio.

I do not want to penalise my team and, at least for the time being, I’m going to stand aside for the penalties and let other teammates get on with it.

When I return to my club, I will continue to work hard to improve on this aspect.

Tunisia had a penalty award of their own overturned after VAR intervention, meanwhile.

Mane, Saivet, Gueye and Kouyate played all 120 minutes of Sunday’s semi-final.

Nigeria 2-1 South Africa
Ivory Coast 1-1 Algeria (3-4 penalties)
Algeria 2-1 Nigeria

Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m) will be up against Mane and Senegal in Friday’s final after Algeria saw off Nigeria in dramatic fashion.

Mahrez curled in an injury-time free-kick to give his country a 2-1 win, having earlier forced an own goal from Nigeria’s William Troost-Ekong with a fizzed cross from the right flank.

Mahrez, Wilfred Ndidi (£5.0m) and Alex Iwobi (£6.0m) played the full 90 minutes for their respective countries, while Leon Balogun (£4.5m) was an unused substitute for the Super Eagles.

Algeria had progressed to the semis following a penalty shootout victory over Ivory Coast in the quarter-finals.

Neither Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) nor (surprisingly) Mahrez were on the field by the time the game reached that point, having been replaced on 94 and 86 minutes respectively.

Jonathan Kodjia (£5.5m) was also withdrawn in extra time but the Aston Villa striker had at least found the back of the net by that point, collecting Zaha’s pass and rifling in a low shot from the edge of the Algerian box.

The Palace winger cut a frustrated figure at times and picked up a booking after a clash with Ramy Bensebaini, although the Algerian defender didn’t do himself any favours with a theatrical reaction after contact with Zaha’s arm.

Serge Aurier (£5.0m), who has picked up hamstring and wrist injuries during the tournament, watched the game from the sidelines.

A day earlier, Nigeria had seen off South Africa in their own quarter-final.

Iwobi impressed and it was from his cross down the left that Nigeria first took the lead, with Samuel Chukwueze finishing at the second attempt.

Troost-Ekong scored an 89th-minute winner before Iwobi was replaced by Balogun in injury time.

Ndidi again lasted the course in central midfield.

The tournament is not over for Nigeria despite their subsequent semi-final defeat: the third-place play-off takes place on Wednesday evening between Tunisia and the Super Eagles.

    Any opinions on this setup?

    4.5/4.0
    TAA, VVD, Digne, Walker/Zinchenko, 4.0
    Salah, KDB, Bilva, Siggy, 4.5
    Vardy, 6.0/6.5

    Upsides:
    Strong balance
    Important defenders covered
    Vardy

    Downside:
No Sterling! And this is very scary!

Personally i would downgrade Vardy and upgrade KDB to Sterling for Better captaincy rotation. Leicesters fixtures arent exciting. Vardy is one to monitor though

Thanks - most of my drafts have looked like you suggest, but Vardy looked so strong at the back end of last season...

Appreciate the comment. Missing hauls from Sterling will definitely be more punishing than missing some from Vardy if he starts well...

If you're 100% set on Kane + Aguero, then I don't think you should have either Salah or Sterling.

That said, I prefer both Salah and Sterling to either of Kane or Aguero

I really don't think you can have both Kane AND Aguero and also have one of Salah/Sterling without the rest of your team suffering. You should have 1 premium forward if you have to, and my advice is - you don't have to. The value is in the mids and defs so focus on those.

Read somewhere that Ole has said that he expect Sanchez to score +20 goals if he can find form. But in order to find form, surely he has to start him? I have Greenwood as "cover". I do know Martial and James is in contention too

    RMT

    Ryan
    Robertson TAA Laporte Digne
    Salah (C) Sterling Siggy Sanchez
    King DCL

    Subs: Button Greenwood Kelly Dendoncker

DCL weak spot, but at 6 mil and starting he is worth a punt surely.

Seriously, I consider him to be our worst transfer of all time, I can barely describe how bad he's looked whenever I've seen him play for us. It's not just a couple of games to settle in, it's been a season and a half, I think if a team offered to take him on loan with 50% of his wages, we'd bite their hand off.

Fraser the assist genius for both

Actually somewhat tempted by that tbh. If I decide to go w/o Vardy ( 🙁 ) as below, was thinking I’d spreading risk by going Deulofeu Wilson but King could be the man... who knows.

If Haller comes in 7.0 or less I’ll probably go him and Wilson though

Bournemouth scored 15 points less at home last season than Man City did away, and scored 29 less points away than Arsenal did at home, so I would say this seems fair (and I usually disagree with a lot of Doos's numbers)

Siggy v BSilva a tough one. If Bernardo can nail down RW and get more attacking returns with KDB back to create for them, he could be an absolute gem at 8.0... would you rather wait and see with him, then?

I much prefer Wilson to King honestly. I did have a Vardy King frontline but the King pick just seems like it could go horribly wrong, despite that 1.5 diff potentially being very useful.

I’d expect we have an indication of whether zinch starts before the first game though. If Mendy is still not fit then he’s clear first choice for Pep

A start in the Community Shield final is not enough for me in terms of zinchenko/Mendy. If theyre both doing good they will be rotated none the less. Laporte (and maybe Walker if Cancelo is not signed) are the only options I would consider no matter what preseason indicates

Really need some fodder enablers to give me a bench (Button, Kelly, Rico, Greenwood)

    Otherwise I've got:

    Pope
    TAA VVD Digne
    Salah Sterling Siggy Fraser Perez
    King Jota

Player that I'm least confident about is Siggy and that's due to his price

I have this exact draft in my inventory (but Wickham over Greenwood) and reckon this will pretty much be the template if the likes of Kelly & Rico do look like they'll be getting gametime post pre-season? If not we're gonna need some sort of bench so likely Fraser > Zaha, Digne > Coleman or maybe Siggy > Zaha to find one or two 0.5's required for the upgrades?

      Not for me

Given general goalkeeper inflation of 0.5 I reckon Fab is the same value as he always was bar a 4.5 hitting it. Lloris was boosted by pens last year and needs lots of extra cs to keep up. Fab will always get the saves

      1. Ramboros
        • 12 Years

Lloris missed several games last season. That's about 17 points missed. Those numbers aren't compensated by the penalty saves.

It's easy to forget about Fabianski's consistent value as many are used to always having a go to 4.5 option. I can almost guarantee that there will be a 4.5 GK to cross the 130 points barrier this season too, but you have to pick the right one. Fabianski should quite reliably cross that mark again.

There are many great reasons to get Sterling, and most of them aren't kneejerky.

Don't see it as Kneejerky at all, more the fact it highlights how dangerous he can be against a premiership team. Was always 50/50 between him and Kane. This just leans me more towards Sterling

Kane, Sterling and Salah draft attempt:

    Ryan
van Dijk - Walker - Digne
    Salah - Sterling - Brooks - McGinn
    Kane - Deulofeu - King

    Button - Dendoncker - Kelly - Gibson

Had to make a couple of sacrifices in defence but other than that think this is looking pretty solid, with the captaincy headache every week to keep you entertained.

With Kane > Vardy I would probably use the extra money to upgrade McGinn to Zaha, and Walker to Laporte. Got a good feeling about Brooks. Vardy isn't really a captaincy option though which is what you get with Kane.

    3rd draft of the season:

    Ryan Button
    TAA VVD Digne Cathcart Kelly
    Salah Sterling Siggy Zaha/Maddy Dendoncker
    Jota King Deulofeu

I can downgrade VVD to Walker and get Fraser for Zaha...or would you get Vardy? What do you think?

Let Vardy go. Keep Zaha or get someone like Maddy if you believe Leicester will fire from the get go. Maddisson will be key to Leicesters season. Personally I would do

      Jota + VVD -> DCL + Robertson

Wolves fixtures + EL puts me off

Would also do Deulofeu + Cathcart -> Fodder + Laporte

Early days yet - everyone was going 5 at the back on Day 1 and that died a death quickly - wait until some strikers bang some pre-season goals in and a couple of big transfers are done and it will all change.
