Mane a doubt for Gameweek 1 as Senegal make AFCON final

The Gameweek 1 availability of Sadio Mane (£11.5m) must surely be in question after Senegal made it through to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time since 2002.

Senegal face Algeria in Friday’s final, which is staged exactly three weeks before Liverpool’s season-opening fixture against Norwich City.

Jurgen Klopp appears to be giving all of his players a three-week break following their international exertions this summer – as happened with several players after the 2018 World Cup – and Mane’s delayed departure from Egypt casts into doubt his chances of featuring against the newly promoted Canaries, at least from the start.

It’s not just Mane who is representing his country at the Africa Cup of Nations, of course, and we’ll be bringing you up to date on the other FPL assets involved at the quarter-final and semi-final stages in the Scout Notes article below.

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Egypt bowed out of the competition at the round-of-16 stage.

Senegal 1-0 Benin
Senegal 1-0 Tunisia (after extra-time)

Mane was heavily involved in Senegal’s quarter-final win over Benin, teeing up Everton’s Idrissa Gueye (£5.0m) for the match-winning goal and seeing two strikes of his own chalked off after VAR intervention.

Mane lasted the whole 90 minutes, along with Cheikhou Kouyate (£5.0m) – again playing at centre-half – and Newcastle United’s forgotten man Henri Saivet.

Gueye was withdrawn just before the game entered stoppage time.

The Lions of Teranga then saw off Tunisia in a tense semi-final, with the game going to extra-time after a goalless 90 minutes.

Dylan Bronn headed into his own net to give Senegal the victory, although Mane had earlier wasted an excellent chance when screwing a shot wide after rounding Tunisia goalkeeper Mouez Hassan.

That was the Liverpool winger’s only attempt on goal in the entire game and he was perhaps more peripheral than he had been throughout the tournament.

The former Southampton man also ceded penalty-taking duties after two misses from the spot in the tournament, allowing Saivet to step up from 12 yards in the 80th minute – only for the Newcastle man to see his effort saved.

Mane said:

It’s a momentary withdrawal. I have missed penalties in both games and must admit that it is not a good ratio.

I do not want to penalise my team and, at least for the time being, I’m going to stand aside for the penalties and let other teammates get on with it.

When I return to my club, I will continue to work hard to improve on this aspect.

Tunisia had a penalty award of their own overturned after VAR intervention, meanwhile.

Mane, Saivet, Gueye and Kouyate played all 120 minutes of Sunday’s semi-final.

Nigeria 2-1 South Africa
Ivory Coast 1-1 Algeria (3-4 penalties)
Algeria 2-1 Nigeria

Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m) will be up against Mane and Senegal in Friday’s final after Algeria saw off Nigeria in dramatic fashion.

Mahrez curled in an injury-time free-kick to give his country a 2-1 win, having earlier forced an own goal from Nigeria’s William Troost-Ekong with a fizzed cross from the right flank.

Mahrez, Wilfred Ndidi (£5.0m) and Alex Iwobi (£6.0m) played the full 90 minutes for their respective countries, while Leon Balogun (£4.5m) was an unused substitute for the Super Eagles.

Algeria had progressed to the semis following a penalty shootout victory over Ivory Coast in the quarter-finals.

Neither Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) nor (surprisingly) Mahrez were on the field by the time the game reached that point, having been replaced on 94 and 86 minutes respectively.

Jonathan Kodjia (£5.5m) was also withdrawn in extra time but the Aston Villa striker had at least found the back of the net by that point, collecting Zaha’s pass and rifling in a low shot from the edge of the Algerian box.

The Palace winger cut a frustrated figure at times and picked up a booking after a clash with Ramy Bensebaini, although the Algerian defender didn’t do himself any favours with a theatrical reaction after contact with Zaha’s arm.

Serge Aurier (£5.0m), who has picked up hamstring and wrist injuries during the tournament, watched the game from the sidelines.

A day earlier, Nigeria had seen off South Africa in their own quarter-final.

Iwobi impressed and it was from his cross down the left that Nigeria first took the lead, with Samuel Chukwueze finishing at the second attempt.

Troost-Ekong scored an 89th-minute winner before Iwobi was replaced by Balogun in injury time.

Ndidi again lasted the course in central midfield.

The tournament is not over for Nigeria despite their subsequent semi-final defeat: the third-place play-off takes place on Wednesday evening between Tunisia and the Super Eagles.

£20m a steal for Trippier, what happened to Daniel Levy? They're takking about Foyth being fb on the radio. Decent fixtures but can Tottenham defend?

RB is Levy’s piggy bank. Haven’t checked but I expect they’ve turned a tidy profit on him. Now to set the next one in motion.

Doubt losing Trips will impair defence much tbf

Trippier had an iffy season last but Foyth will need to step up big time , hardly the finished product

Trippier has been world class (or at least close to) for a while. He had an awful season.

But Atlético are laughing about this. 20m for ANYONE in todays market is a steal. For someone as good as Trippier? That's robbery.

Spurs have been had there. I think it makes them less appealing to back but it is early days and we have a lot of pre season left.

If Zinchenko is nailed he'd be in my team. But I don't have that answer.

And KDB? Don't think he offers value for money for a lot of reasons.

Laporte is best defender in game behind the Liverpool trio. And Pogba had a fantastic FPL season despite what people say. For 8.5m if he repeats last season then you're laughing.

Think this looks fairly balanced, managed to get most of the big hitters in.

        Ryan, Button
        TAA, VVD, Coleman, Dunk, Targett,
        Salah, Sterling, Perez, Barkley/Townsend, Dedonk
        Kane, King, Greenwood.

Very decent. Like the balance in defence.

KdB makes or breaks it though. Without him you could a 4th defender/bench option/striker depending on where you went.

I’m still puzzling over the near universal King pick. Clearly missing something

It’s not something I’d really consider but went into play mode and came up with the below:

          Ryan
          VVD Walker Coleman AWB Dunk
          Salah Sterling KDB Noble
          Kane

          Subs: 4.0, 4.5, 4.5, 4.5

Don’t think I’d want Dunk & Noble playing every week.

Punting on Everton keeping 4 CS in first 7/8 games and Delph playing OOP.

          Ryan (Button)
          Digne / Robertson / TAA / Delph / (4.0)
          Fraser / Sigurdsson / Salah © / Sterling / (Dendoncker)
          Jota / Deulofeu / (4.5)

If Everton re-sign Zouma and Idrissa heads out as expected, I think Delph could be a decent FPL punt, albeit in a defensive MF position. My guess is he'll pivot with Gomez behind the front 4. Kind of how Barry did with McCarthy. Can't see him replacing Coleman.

          Thoughts?

It's a good question. My thinking is Delph might offer something different, CS and assist potential from MF. Coleman has looked off the pace.

Well I'd say Coleman offers more assist potential. Generally deep midfielders like Jorginho, Xhaka and so on are poor FPL assets.

It's not a bad team at all. But why risk Delph right now? Go for someone nailed and who is going to get you the points (more likely) then see what transpires with Delph and how he fits into the Everton setup.
As a team though, I think it's not too bad. A bit different but not too much for alarm bells to be ringing.

Downgrade Willian to Moutinho (who will probably get more points anyway) and upgrade Ake to Laporte.

Laporte and Mou should easily outscore Willian and Ake.

Laporte might outscore them both on his own, never mind having Moutinho as well!

I've tinkered with formations where I have just Salah and no Sterling and compared them to teams with both in, using last seasons scores as my comparison.

Without Sterling I can make a team that has the same points total but from the 15 not the 11 I'd start every week.

11 v 11 it has the team with both Salah and Sterling ahead by 100 points.

I just can't see that it's viable to only have one unless we can find that hidden gem who can be the difference.

Question is, who is the Fraser or Jimenez of this season going to be?

I don't get the condescending response here mate. I wasn't even trying to be arsey in that other comment, I was just making a statement based on pre-season. Relax..

This is a statement about last seasons performances. What I'm implying is that if those top performers play similarly to last season, it'll be hard without both.

It'll be interesting to actually see how much better or worse the players have played across multiple seasons and use that as a prediction tool to see what we could expect.

I'm just trying to invoke some interest in the data we have and what we can draw from it, that's all.

Don't get the odd hostile response mate. Just trying to suggest something a bit different.

                    But ok then.

Yes but Wolves early fixtures are off-putting especially when you add Europa League into the equation.

He's just played a lot of gruelling matches in the Gold Cup, and Wolves start their Europa adventure very soon. He may need rest and rotation when the PL season begins, so I think Jota, who's had a summer rest although still has Thursday night to look forward to, will be fresher.

I really don't want to go without either of those two premium mids at all.

Haller could be gold if he's £6.5m. Still value at £7m too. Pukki could be good once Norwich get past their initial rough run of games to start the season with.

Che Adams could also get it going, though I still fancy Ings in that team.

We'll find out soon who's the next Fraser or Jimmy gonna given there will be. imho it is not that important to have him from the beginning but to jump early on the train. it should be quite easy to spot him early with stats.
right now it's almost impossible to guess, because who would have thought Michu or Fraser gonna play so well? by getting them two or three weeks after they start firing you do not lose that much and guessing now is too risky imho

Agree with jumping on early bit.

Too many times I save up transfers instead of jumping early on bandwagons. Then find myself priced out of being able to do the move.

Jumping early on is a crucial part of the game imho. Only by this you can gain advantage over other players, after some time having such a player do not give you any profit as nearly everybody has him. It is only for safety reasons.

Perfectly plausible imo given pricing structure.

Like the spread in defence. My early version had Lloris for Spurs too.

The 5-3-2 version would I guess go Wilson Fraser over Rash.

I only dumped it as it felt so inflexible.

that formation looks weird doesn't it 🙂

I find it not bad, but the biggest disadvantage is that it will be very difficult to jump on emerging must haves/in form/bandwagons....which will mainly be midfielders

                    Agreed

Though arguably you can lose either a forward or defender if it’s a low priced mid who’s the one to have.

My version had Kane and Siggy which opened up more price points.

                        Yes

I think the strategy in playing it would probably be just to treat the back 6 as set and forget and there for long term value.

That leaves 5 attacking options where you likely need to keep a transfer in hand for switches between 5-2-3 and 5-3-2.

                        I had from memory

                        Sterling/Mo Siggy
                        Kane Jota Deu

I was just thinking, in points per game terms 5-3-2 is clearly the best formation if it really guarantees most points then fpl winners or at least the top 10 should consist of people using this formation, no?
So what could be the reason that even though alghoritms suggest to use 5-3-2 and when you look at total points by player it is also initiuitive that this formation should guarantee most points, players with most points arent the ones using it?
Could it be that maybe defenders produce more stable returns and there is higher variance among midfielders and strikers points? What I mean is that they often have streaks of good and bad form and switching between ie midfielders who are in form should return more points per game than keeping one defender for whole season? Let's take Pogba for example: he's points per game aren't that high, but there was a time, a streak of 5 or 10 fixtures when he was just scoring like crazy.
                          What do you think?

The real difficulty is lack of flexibility imo . The team is set up so that the back 6 and the big 2 are more or less set and forget.

That leaves 3 positions you’re really looking to make transfers in and the total budget is around 22 mill or so. Very few options.

I’m intrigued by this, how’s this draft:

                  Ederson
                  AWB//VVD//TAA//Digne//LaPorte
                  Salah//Sterling
                  King//Vardy//Greenwood

                  Button//Kelly//Mendy//Donkey — 0.5itb

The obvious punt here being Mason Greenwood, however Solskjaer said he could start against Chelsea. He may well be the best bargain in fantasy if he gets minutes.

think Pereyra and Willian are nice picks
Watford have good opening fixtures and Pereyra started very well last season
Willian should be good value with all of the injuries at Chelsea

Wish Lanzini wasn’t so overpriced. Looked so good today along with Wilshere and Anderson. Not sure Lanzini will be the greatest FPL option ever but looks set for a huge season

Haven’t Sheff Utd just signed some striker who’s a 5.5 OOP mid

                  Yarmolenko, JWP, Grealish, Lamela etc

The FPL Gods would really have thrown us a bone if Yarmolenko gets back fit & firing in a few goals/assists at 6.0

Sterling Salah Vardy is the ideal attacking core I think

I’d much rather back them up with elite defenders than mid price attackers too - I’m just not feeling the love for the mid price attackers this season (yet 🙂 )
