How Chelsea are shaping up under Lampard in pre-season

Chelsea slumped to a 1-0 defeat in their latest pre-season friendly on Friday morning.

Frank Lampard’s tactical experimentations continued in Japan and we’ll analyse his first loss as the Blues’ head coach in our Scout Notes article below.

Our game-by-game, team-by-team pre-season minutes spreadsheet has also been updated and is available to read here.

Kawasaki Frontale 1-0 Chelsea

Lampard says he wants Kurt Zouma to stay at Stamford Bridge this summer and bolster his options in central defence.

Zouma, who spent last season on loan at Everton, played the first 45 minutes of Friday’s friendly against Kawasaki Frontale as Lampard’s search for his Gameweek 1 centre-back pairing continued.

Antonio Rudiger (£6.0m) is expected to miss the start of the campaign and Lampard has tried various options in Chelsea’s three pre-season games to date, including playing Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.0m) at the heart of the defence.

This latest fixture saw Zouma and David Luiz (£6.0m) start the match at centre-half, with Andreas Christensen (£5.0m) replacing the Frenchman at the interval.

Lampard said:

Kurt is a very good defender, a very good person and professional, and I want him here, simple as that. We are competitive with the centre-backs we’ve got in the team. He had a very good season at Everton and I understand why they want him but he’s a Chelsea player and I want him. He’s working really hard and if he competes for a position and plays well this season then he plays.

Azpilicueta’s reversion to right-back will disappoint those who held out faint, optimistic hopes of Davide Zappacosta (£4.5m) offering us a cut-price route into Chelsea’s defence in FPL.

The Italian full-back did replace Azpilicueta at half-time, at least, and has featured in all three of Chelsea’s pre-season friendlies so far.

Chelsea were beaten by an 86th-minute header from Leandro Damiao and understandably struggled to sustain any intensity in a humid Yokohama, although had plenty of chances before they fell behind.

The mercury read 30 degrees in the Japanese city and Lampard cited the heat and humidity as an excuse after full-time:

Obviously, we want to win matches no matter what but ten days of pre-season, having flown into Japan three days ago, brings up a lot of difficulties for us physically.

That’s why I was very pleased with the players physically. They gave everything in strong humidity with some good individual performances. I discovered a real appetite and attitude to work in the humidity with jetlag for a lot of the players.

People are finding their fitness and their form. There are the normal things in pre-season that take a bit of time: being clinical in front of goal which we weren’t, but that comes, and some small details we will work on.

Our quality of play on the ball was not quite what we want. We will get there. In front of goal, it was a similar thing. We are not quite as sharp as we want to be but we are working towards that and I’m confident it will come. I have got no fears. I was happy with big parts of the performances.

There were still positives to take from the game, with Ross Barkley (£6.0m) a man-of-the-match candidate and Jorginho (£5.0m) resembling the intelligent pass merchant we were all promised at the start of 2018/19.

Barkley set up a succession of chances – two for Kenedy – with some sumptuous through-balls, operating in the hole in a 4-2-3-1.

It was a mixed bag from the Brazilian, who struggled on the left flank before improving on the opposite wing in the second half.

Lampard said:

With Kenedy, my feeling coming into a big squad with a transfer ban, is that I need to assess the players for as long as I can in pre-season to make sure we pick the right squad.

If Kenedy continues to show the attitude and play the way he did today he is making a great case to stay having been on loan in recent seasons. Nobody is in or out of the squad or has had a line drawn under or over them. Everybody is competing to stay in it.

Mason Mount, who played under Lampard at Derby last season, was involved with the senior team for the second game in a row, first starting as a number ten before moving to the left flank after Barkley’s introduction.

The Chelsea boss said of the young midfielder’s performance:

I thought Mason’s performance was really good. It was a continuation of how he played for me last year on loan. His energy is quality even though he hasn’t been with us long. We know Mason is part of the first-team squad this year, and it’s time for him. His qualities will improve even more with the quality around him. Everyone knows the hopes I have for Mason, and he showed a glimmer of what we may see this year and going forward.

We didn’t have much time to assess Christian Pulisic (£7.5m), who made his bow as a 65th-minute substitute and took up a left-wing role.

Speaking after full-time, the American said:

I’m delighted to be out here with the team and to play in an actual match for the first time as a Chelsea player feels really good.

We wanted to come out with the win but pre-season is all about getting minutes under the belt and I feel great for being out there.

It was a tough one out there with the humidity and they were a very good opponent, we saw that with their goal at the end but you want tough games like that in pre-season.

Pulisic showed glimpses of what he is capable of against Kawasaki and Lampard has been impressed with the ex-Dortmund winger so far:

He’s comfortable on the ball and I think he should have had a penalty towards the end of the game.

He wants to try to take people on, the sort of player the fans are going to like so we have to give him a little bit of time to adapt slightly.

But the way he has trained, the way he has come in with his personality looks great so I am really pleased to have him.

Michy Batshuayi and Olivier Giroud (£7.0m) each got a half to impress, battling gamely in the lone striker’s role without much to show for their efforts.

Tammy Abraham wasn’t involved, with Lampard explaining why the young striker and Kepa Arrizabalaga (£5.5m) missed out:

Tammy Abraham has tonsillitis and Kepa reported a stomach bug this afternoon. I’m not a doctor but it probably comes a little bit alongside what I mentioned before about players not sleeping and finding it difficult in different ways, and it’s come out in those two players.

I don’t expect either of them to be too long. I know Tammy is already on the mend. Hopefully, both are in contention for Barcelona next week.

Chelsea XI (4-2-3-1): Caballero; Azpilicueta (Zappacosta 45′), Zouma (Christensen 45′), David Luiz, Alonso (Emerson 45′); Kovacic (Drinkwater 57′), Jorginho (Bakayoko 57′); Pedro (Barkley 45′), Mount (Pulisic 65′), Kenedy (Palmer 71′); Batshuayi (Giroud 45′).

Yeah I saved the bb to zero effect last year - would have been better used after my early WC or from the off

Teams are far less solid and goals are more likely

I think Perez is a better option than Maddy gives you .5 to upgrade elsewhere too

Assuming Mendy is injured, and Gueye is still on everton’s books when the window closes in 19 days how do you pick 5 from this lot?

TAA, Robbo, VVD, Laporte, Zinchenko, Digne, Coleman

    Back 6 anyone??

      For me:
TAA, Laporte, Digne are in my draft side. I appreciate the argument around doubling up on City and, particularly, Liverpool but, for their position, they are expensive assets.

Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of arguments for four premium defenders but, at the moment, I've got three and two 4.5m defenders (Diop and Dunk) in my side.

    Observation:
FPL is not a game where you get £100MN to spend on whoever you want. It is a game where you are tied to spending £64MN a certain way, leaving you to spend £36MN how you wish.
Purchasing Salah takes £8MN of this £36MN, or 22% of your free budget. If you purchase Salah and Sterling, you are spending 43% of your free budget on 2 players in your squad a 15.

When looking at the game this way, the value of each player comes under more scrutiny, and your expectations for players of differing price increases.
E.g King=£6.5MN, Wilson=£8MN. The difference in price is clearly £1.5MN. But rather than viewing the players as costing £6.5MN and £8MN, you should consider their prices as £2MN and £3.5MN respectively (you are forced to spend £4.5MN on each of these 2 striker positions anyway).
Thinking this way, Wilson no longer costs 1.23x King, he now costs 1.75x Wilson. Making some assumptions (e.g £4.5MN strikers scoring 0), for Wilson to represent value over King, he would need to score 1.75x as many points.

I welcome people pointing out flaws in this logic

    1. SADIO SANÉ
      • 8 Years
      4 years, 9 months ago

think if you did this all over your team you might not spend your whole budget, so we can afford to splash out here and there?

I can afford Wilson quite easily if I don't get Sterling - how does Fraser v Sterling compare on the value thing?

      1. Pillson
        • 6 Years
        4 years, 9 months ago

Yes agree the best value would be in the cheaper options as we know. I'm not entirely sure of my point yet, but I think it is that each £0.5MN you spend is about 3x as powerful as we currently consider it (as only ~1/3 of the budget is yours to spend freely).

        Last year:
        Sterling 234 points.
        Fraser 181 points.

They are now priced at £5.5MN and £3MN. (£12MN and £7.5MN)
Sterling costs 1.83x more than Fraser so to represent value over Fraser would need to score 1.83x Fraser.
If we assume Fraser scores the same as last year, Sterling would need to score 331 points to represent equal value (highly unlikely).

HOWEVER if you captained Sterling every week, he would represent value over Fraser if he scored 331/2= 165 (highly likely)

IF you captained Sterling for half the games (assuming his points average evenly across all games), he would represent value over Fraser if he scored 331/(3/2) = 220points (less than last season, pretty likely).

My conclusion here would be that if you are captaining Sterling for ~0.5 the games he is likely to be better value than Fraser, but much less than this and Fraser represents better value.

If Sterling is 12m minus 4.5m, his effective price would be 7.5m, rather than 5.5m (which you used for your calculations), right?

    2. Clive The Ram
      • 7 Years
      4 years, 9 months ago

Seems like a valid point to me. I suppose the balance needs to be struck, though, between value for money and actual points. The best VfM sides probably don't get close to 100m value so, while VfM can form the basis of the side, you would need to project where best to spend the remaining budget to maximise your points haul (if that makes sense?)

      1. Pillson
        • 6 Years
        4 years, 9 months ago

Actual points is always the main consideration. The way to get to actual points is value for money.
Rather than working from a team of all the cheapest players (best vfm) and then thinking where can I spend my remaining budget to add points, I think you the mindset would be to start off with a squad that would get you the maximum points (probably costing ~£200MN) and work backwards, thinking how can reduce the squad cost to £100MN whilst having minimum effect on my points total.

That is how I think vfm should be considered

    3. Miguel Sanchez

So based on this what does your current draft look like?

      1. Pillson
        • 6 Years
        4 years, 9 months ago

I haven't changed my draft since considering this. However I think this means that I will only have 1 captain choice (Salah) as I would want to captain him far more than 50% of the time.
Outside of this I would want to distribute my funds quite evenly (as much as I think Vardy will have a great season I do not think he will represent good value when considering this).
Most of my starting XI will be players costing ~£6-£8MN

    4. socho
      • 6 Years

Actually it is the right way of looking at things. To mitigate this, I think everyone unconsciously considers this when building the team. This is why you see many more Kings than WIlsons in the drafts.

The logic is good, but you also have to factor that 4.0 defenders, 4.5 midfielders and 4.5 forwards are not all equal. There are differences in formation too, as it changes how much you have to invest in your first 11.

What you really want to look at is for every 0.5m you spend upgrading a position, where does that 0.5 make the biggest difference.

So a 6.0 defender over a 4.5 defender is generally a bigger points upgrade that a 11m midfielder is over at 9.5m for example.

Just thought of a downfall to this logic. This would all be relevant if we had set and forget teams. But we have transfers.

Pogba in those 10 game weeks he averaged 100 points would've represented value even if he was £12MN+.

Short term form destroys this sorry for timewasting

I’ve been saying this for years. Problem is how much value do you set on the base price ?
If a def is 4.0 and gets 80 points then those points are free but I don’t want a defence that gets 400 for free over one that costs say 35M and gets 1000.

Sterling should outscore KDB and Vardy should outscore Deulofeu over the season. But would go with Sterling just for the captaincy option.

          Aston Villa.

Under Dean Smith they were an unstoppable force in the Championship last season. Are any of their players tempting you at all?

I've got Hourihane (set pieces, goals, assists) in my side at the moment. They have good early fixtures but, at 6.0m and as an unknown quantity at this level, is that too much of a gamble?

I've also gone for the Pope/Heaton GK combo. If Heaton stays at Burnley, one of them will play every week and if he goes to Villa, I've got two excellent, playing 4.5m GKs.

Wait and see with promoted teams. They’d be used to having the ball and dominating every game in the Championship. Now they’re gonna have to deal with having that drastically reduced for some games.

If you’re gonna spend £9m on goalies then why not get two who will play, especially given Burnley’s fixtures.

If Heaton goes to Villa then I agree that is the ideal rotation though.

I have 3 drafts, one is a standout atm for and my most likely squad:

          1) 5-3-2 with Salah, Sterling & Kane
          2) 4-4-2 with Salah & Sterling
          3) 3-5-2 with Salah

No. 1 is my main team atm but not ruling out 2 or 3 yet.
          Which do you prefer?

          1)
          Pope
          Robbo | Vvd | Digne | ZINCHENKO | Targett
          Salah | STERLING | Perez
          KANE | King

          Button | DENDONCKER | HAYDEN | Greenwood

          2)
          Pope
          Robbo | Vvd | Digne | Targett
          Salah | STERLING | SIGGY | Perez
          VARDY | King

          Button | DENDONCKER | KELLY | Greenwood

          3)

          Robbo | Vvd | Digne
          Salah | KDB | SIGGY | ZAHA | Perez
          VARDY | King

I agree - this is making me think it will be sensible to wait and see on West Ham. Looking pretty dreadful on this showing. People have a pop at Noble and assume he needs replacing - but this type of game reminds me of why he is so necessary.

A little remark on premium defenders:

The reason for seeing so much money spent on defenders at the moment in drafts is that usually defender points are dependent on the team and form much more than for strikers.

Even a premium striker can go 2 months without scoring whereas a premium defender will keep a clean sheet for certain during that period of time. Ultimately first few gameweeks of the season will reveal some in-form offensive options and things will go back to normal. Having the flexibility to acquire them early is the key,

Premium defenders are the safer bet before we see form. I think they hold value throughout the season, however.

This team feels very template but I can't seem to move away from it. Would love Spurs cover with their opening fixtures (barring GW2) looking real good but affording Kane would mean probably dropping KDB to Dendoncker, upgrading Wilson and then bringing in King to my strikers:

          Ederson
          TAA, VVD, Digne, Zinchenko
          Salah, KDB, Siggy, Fraser, Perez
          Wilson

          Norris - Kelly - Greenwood - Nketiah

Guess I am just curious about if KDB + Wilson is better than Kane + King at this stage. Or the potential option of dropping Ederson to Pope/Ryan and having Kane + Wilson. Thoughts appreciated lads!

Problem with 451 is, if Wilson gets a late injury or unexpectedly benched, you're down to 10.

I'd maybe swap Perez for Jota or King. Or maybe Siggy and get Vardy and King?

Pep has a history of breaking in new signings slowly to get them used to the Man City way. Mahrez came in for a lot of money but doesn't mean he starts regularly.

Certainly a chance Zinchenko isn't first choice, but my bet would be on him to start the season

He's just the flavour of the month, at this stage he's expected to start but honestly I've been tossing and turning on City defence. Laporte and Ederson seem like the most nailed City defenders to go with, but we are all hunting for those cheaper options to open up options.

            Ryan
            TAA VVD Zinchenko Coleman
            Salah Sterling Richarlison Brooks
            Vardy Adams

            B.
            Ryan
            TAA Robbo Zinchenko
            Salah KDB Fraser Richarlison Zaha
            Vardy Adams

I prefer B to start with if KDB looks on form/likely to get the minutes from the start

Yeah I think KDB's form is the main factor, thanks

Still want West Ham defence lads?

I don't think anybody wants them. Having them to serve a purpose is a bit different I suppose...

We look awful - and Reid and Ogbonna, well I dearly hope never have to play together in a PL match this season.

Very interesting watching the Everton hightlights vs Monaco. Coleman scored and was frequently in the opposition box, whilst there was a Siggy-Digne corner move that looked juicy.

Do we know if he played on after taking that knock?

            FIrst attempt at a team:

            Fabianski - Heaton
            TAA - Digne - Zinchenko - Ake - Kelly
            Salah - Sterling - Moura - Maddison - Dendoncker
            Jota - Deulofeu - King

            Thinking maybe:
            A) Fabianski & Jota > Ryan & Giroud
            B) Maddison & Jota > Tielemans/Perez & Giroud
