Greenwood scores again for Manchester United on tour

Fantasy Premier League managers learned a few lessons about some budget assets on Saturday.

The pre-season picture continues to build for Manchester United, Sheffield United and Southampton.

We’ve got all the talking points from their latest matches.

Inter Milan 0-1 Manchester United

Goals: Mason Greenwood (£4.5m)

Assists: Ashley Young (£5.5m)

Mason Greenwood (£4.5m) scored his second goal of pre-season over the weekend to ramp up interest in the budget striker.

The youngster may not have started for Manchester United in their win over Inter Milan but his 28 minutes on the pitch were certainly impressive.

While Greenwood’s place in the side is not yet assured, especially with Marcus Rashford (£8.5m) already ahead of him for pre-season minutes after three matches, his energy during the summer so far indicate he has promise.

The injured Romelu Lukaku (£8.5m) was not involved amid speculation that he might join Inter, so Greenwood’s chances of first-team involvement are not as unrealistic as some might assume.

At this early stage of pre-season, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has laid down a potential pattern for his attacking midfield berths.

From left to right, Daniel James (£6.0m), Jesse Lingard (£6.5m) and Anthony Martial (£7.5m) were the attacking midfield trio named against Inter, and are all among the most-used options in pre-season so far.

The latter contributed to a lively start for the Red Devils while James once again demonstrated his frightening pace.

This trio are worth monitoring some more as pre-season progresses to ensure that their places are fully secure, but they all stand a good chance of starting in Gameweek 1.

Alexis Sánchez (£7.0m) remains on extended leave following the Copa America, and is probably the most likely to challenge them for a place in the side at this stage.

Luke Shaw (£5.5m) returned to the side after missing the win over Leeds, reminding Fantasy managers of his creativity, although it was the much-maligned Ashley Young (£5.5m) who got the assist for Greenwood’s goal.

Elsewhere in defence, Victor Lindelöf (£5.5m) started at centre-back alongside Axel Tuanzebe but was forced off with an injury in the 57th minute, replaced by Phil Jones (£5.0m), who has played more pre-season minutes than any other centre-back so far.

Also taken off with a knock was Tahith Chong (£4.5m), but Solskjaer does not appear too concerned about either player just yet.

“Well, we don’t know yet but they should be okay. Victor, we’ll have to assess him tomorrow but Tahith will be fine. I think it’s just a knock. I don’t blame the defenders for trying to stop him!” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea (Romero 62′); Shaw (Young 62′), Lindelöf (Jones 57′), Tuanzebe (Bailly 62′), Wan-Bissaka (Dalot 62′); Matic (McTominay 62′), Pogba (Fred 62′); James (Andreas 62′), Lingard (Mata 62′), Martial (Chong 62′) (Gomes 89′); Rashford (Greenwood 62).

Northampton Town 0-2 Sheffield United

Norwood scored two penalties as Sheffield United beat Northampton

Goals: Oliver Norwood x2 (£5.0m)

Assists: Callum Robinson (£5.5m), Kieron Freeman (£4.5m)

Sheffield United’s win over Northampton hinted at further important FPL lessons for the Blades.

New signing Callum Robinson (£5.5m) continues to be deployed as an ‘out-of-position’ option in the front two of Chris Wilder’s 3-5-2 system.

After a lively 15-minute outing against Burton Albion, Robinson started as a centre-forward and played 62 minutes there at Wilder’s former club Northampton.

While he is far from nailed-on as a starting option for Sheffield United ahead of the 2019/20 season, monitoring his position during pre-season is now very important.

Also deployed out-of-position once more was defensive midfielder John Lundstram (£4.0m), who is classed as a defender on FPL.

It is worth remembering that he played just 409 minutes for the Blades last season so he is not especially a key player for them.

However, a £4.0m defender playing in central midfield is something else to continue tracking throughout pre-season.

We also potentially learned something about Sheffield United’s penalty-taking situation in this game.

David McGoldrick (£5.5m) took four spot-kicks last season, converting three of them with Oliver Norwood (£5.0m) responsible for the last one of 2018/19 in March.

It looks as if the former Reading and Brighton midfielder may be staking a claim to assume the penalty duties from McGoldrick based on this match.

With the forward on the field, Norwood scored two penalties in the first half, neither of which he won himself.

The real test of whether Norwood will take spot-kicks in the Premier League for Sheffield United will be if one is given when he shares the pitch with Billy Sharp (£6.0m).

Sharp took two penalties last season, more than Norwood did, so is very much still in the conversation.

Sheffield United XI 3-5-2: Moore; O’Connell, Egan (Stearman 76′), Jagielka (Basham 58′); Stevens (Bryan 76′), Lundstram (Clarke 62′), Norwood, Fleck (Slater 87′), K Freeman (Baldock 62′); McGoldrick (Sharp 62), Robinson (L Freeman 45).

Preston North End 1-3 Southampton

Danny Ings scored a brace as Southampton beat Preston

Goals: Danny Ings x2 (£6.0m), Jake Vokins

Assists: Ryan Bertrand (£5.0m), Nathan Redmond (£6.5m)

Ralph Hasenhüttl experimented with an interesting formation as Southampton beat Preston on Saturday.

He went with a 5-2-3 system, reverting to the wing-back set-up that he had previously been uncertain of.

That saw Ryan Bertrand (£5.0m) and Cedric Soares used on the left and right of a back-five, with the former managing to get an assist.

Wesley Hoedt (£4.5m), Jack Stephens (£4.5m) and Jan Bednarek (£4.5m) were used at centre-back, but as this was just the second match of pre-season for the Saints, it’s hard to know which defenders are first-choice in this position just yet.

Danny Ings (£6.0m) demonstrated that he is ready to fight for his place at Southampton this season as he scored twice in the win over Preston.

Che Adams (£6.0m) joined the club to add some pace and power to the attack, but the former Burnley and Liverpool forward still has plenty to offer.

With Hasenhüttl going for a front-three at Deepdale, it’s hard to know if he believes Ings is compatible to play alongside Adams or not yet.

Against Preston, it was Shane Long (£5.0m) and Michael Obafemi (£5.0m) who were stationed either side of Ings.

Southampton XI: Gunn; Bertrand (Vokins 72′), Hoedt, J Stephens, Bednarek (Klarer 72′), Cedric; Smallbone, Højbjerg (Armstrong 60′); Obafemi (Redmond 60′), Ings (Sims 60′), Long (Reed 60′).

Bayer Leverkusen 1-2 Watford

Javi Gracia named a stronger side for the first half against Leverkusen

Goals: Will Hughes (£5.5m), Andre Gray (£6.0m)

Assists: Troy Deeney (£6.5m)

Javi Gracia named two XIs in Watford’s 2-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen, with the first of them arguably the stronger-looking.

This line-up featured Troy Deeney (£6.5m) and Gerard Deulofeu (£6.5m) as a front pairing in a 4-4-2 system, very similar to the one used last season.

The former got himself an assist as Will Hughes (£5.5m) opened the scoring in the first half.

However, it is worth noting that Andre Gray (£6.0m), used in the second period, scored his second goal in as many pre-season matches and is currently top-scorer for Watford at this early stage of the summer.

With so many defenders on the books at Vicarage Road in 2019/20, predicting their back-four could prove tricky.

As we’ve only had two matches to assess for the Hornets, we can’t draw too many conclusions.

However, if we are continuing with the idea that the first-half XI generally looked closer to Watford’s best line-up, then maybe options such as Kiko Femenía (£4.5m), Christian Kabasele (£4.5m) and Craig Dawson (£5.0m) are among Gracia’s thinking.

It is worth mentioning that the latter was replaced by Adrian Mariappa (£4.5m) in the 41st minute, indicating an injury, although no information has surfaced on Dawson since the game.

Jose Holebas (£5.0m) also started the match, but it would be no surprise if he retains the left-back berth over Adam Masina (£4.5m).

First-half Watford XI (4-4-2): Foster; Holebas, Dawson (Mariappa 41), Kabasele, Femenía; Sema, Capoue, Doucouré, Hughes; Deulofeu, Deeney.

Second-half Watford XI (4-4-2): Gomes; Masina, Cathcart, Mariappa, Janmaat; Forster, Capoue (Sema 71′), Wilmot, Cleverley; Okaka, A Gray.

    Hi guys,

I've put together my first draft, any feedback on it would be much appreciated!

    4.5 keeper
    TAA - Robbo - Stacey
    Salah - Sterling - Sane - Tielemans - Zaha
    Wesley - King

Bench is as cheap as it gets.

Sane is a massive punt. Hes most likely not going to be starting matches and you cant have that at 9.5

Doubt it. AWB played every PL game he was fit for. Greenwood will have to displace Rashford.

But he looks best of the £4.5m strikers

He won't *necessarily* have to displace Rashford. RW is the problem position in United's attack and Greenwood could get gametime there too.

First draft of the new season. Probably quite template but does anyone feel like pointing out flaws or potential problems you see?

Decent overall. I think Salah, Sterling and KDB harms the rest of your team. If your going four at the back it needs to be four premiums, and I'd go up slightly from Deulofeu

A lot of options at the 6.5f mark though. Not particularly keen on Deu himself but I'm sure someone at that price point will make themselves known fairly quickly.

Begging the question there with 4 premium defenders.

Digne and Coleman were fairly rank for half of last season and now theyre everywhere at new premium prices. Nothing to say that Everton won’t repeat first half of the season form. Likewise Zinc could cost a lot when he isn’t as nailed as hoped. Laporte and all City defence were very costly when they went on a 7 match conceding run.

None of that may happen of course but premium defence are not guaranteed - especially in the short medium term.

A 4.5 in a four man defence enabling KdB or Wilson say could well work imo.

Look at Chelsea the last few seasons. Consistently have the likes of Alonso, Azpi and Luiz not far off Laporte scores. At least one of them should perform

            Agreed

I like Chelsea in principle. Luiz and Azpi are very tempting to me. But track record versus Lampard still.

Think most premiums will pay in the end but also think plenty may disappoint in short medium term.

I have various set ups - most involve some compromise at the back. When I’m in funds I’ll load up for long term value. Short term i don’t see that a compromise there is any worse than up top by picking unreliable 6.5s in mid or attack.

It would and I could then spread the cash around.

The plus side to KDB + Wilson is flexibility though. They're at the higher end of their price point so can be quickly downgraded to whoever else hits form but could also be quickly used to bring someone like Kane in if needed (i.e. KDB + Wilson > 6.5m + Kane). Whereas if I had King + Bilva + more money spread in defence it becomes trickier to bring him in if needed.

Personally think Bilva is being very overlooked here.

And Wilson might have a hard time justifying the extra 1.5m over King without pens to start with.

I think I'm happy to take the chance for the opening two fixtures anyway. If I'm wrong it's easier to go from Wilson to King than the other way around.

I like the double BOU idea too, especially as Fraser and Wilson linked up so well last year.

After a few weeks I'd probably do Fraser > a 6.5 or Wilson > 6.5 and spend the extra cash on defence, unless they're really ripping it up. Lots of options in defence but not sure which to start with whereas I *know* those opening two BOU fixtures look tasty.

Perez a safer option by far. Depends how you want to play the game. One punt is fine, rest of your team is fairly solid. Wouldn't out the VC on him though!

    Alison
    Coleman - Zinchenko - Robertson - KWP

    Re Everton in particularly Coleman/DCL/Siggy

Hard to be sure until the window closes. DCL is currently our first choice but we are trying to bring in another striker. I assume Gylfi will continue in the same role as last season. Coleman is currently our only right back but that is another position we are looking to strengthen.

Moise Kean has been doing the rounds and seems kind of possible. Juve are asking for silly buy back clauses though.

There has been some Mandzukic noise aswell as a sort of experienced mentor for DCL.

Rafael Leap aswell but I don't know much about him tbh

        Otherwise....Malcolm again but he's a winger.

If you are keen on the idea that end-of-season form is a much better indicator for how the new season will begin (rather than how last season's early form was) then worth noting that, for the last 10 games of last season, Coleman's mins-per-xGI was almost double Digne's. Double. Coleman's mp-xGI is second highest for all defenders over this period, just marginally short Trent and a tick above Robbo. His goal threat is substantial, Digne's is not.

      Just putting that out there.

          • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Yep. Coleman wallops Digne for xGI in those tables too, because it's the same data. I would say this, though. If Everton buy a decent forward - especially one with a proven track-record of heading the ball into the net - then I think Digne's superior chances-created stats really start to suggest the extra invest might be wise. But it feels like they're less important if we still have DCL up-front, not putting them away.

I don't think you can have all of VVD, Laporte, Siggy, Wilson and Vardy alongside Salah & Sterling without being a bit unbalanced.

If it were me I'd tap into the 6.5m price point either up front or in midfield.

Split here on two setups: Effectively comes down to these two sets of core players in a 5-3-2 which the rest of I'm happy with and includes Sterling and Kane. I'm quite prone to knee-jerk and took way too many hits last season. So really want to start with a starting 11 I can, for the most part just leave, Dullard as Joe would say.

Option A Salah, x3 5.5s Zinchenko, Toby, Coleman

This leaves me with only one pool defender in TAA and a higher risk of replacing Zinchencko. Granted there is a few other 5.5s available as the season goes on.

Option B KDB, Digne, Laporte, Robertson
This gives me 2 Pool and 3 City but at a cost of Salah being the compromise.

RMT has a points difference of only 4 points in favour of option A.

Captaincy wise A obviously gives me 3 seriously strong options but B also gives me less of a headache and would be happy with Sterling Kane rotation.

We all know the damage that Salah can do but can the extra points be made in having the better supporting cast in option B?

Sorry for the length of the post here.

If you're looking for a dullard approach a la Joe, option A. The Zinchenko risk is negated by the fact that their are so many alternatives, whereas there's no negating the Salah risk. Especially given how highly captained he'll be.

            I am thinking its
            A) 200 (KDB), 140 (King) = 340
            B) 180 (Siggy), 160 (Wilson) = 340

So it's quite equal overall but A is dependent on KDB fitness.... Wiith the first few easy fixtures for B, I do lean towards B to start the first 2 games.

Lads, I know this might be too much to ask, but I'm stuck between three teams and then I'm set. Would you be so kind to share your thoughts?

    Team B, 3-5-2:
    Pope

    Salah / KDB / Siggy / Fraser / Madds
    Tammy / King

    Team C, 5-4-1:

I dunno.. With a 5 million keeper you think "just 0.5 more and you can get lloris/ddg/kepa/pickford".. Then you end up freeing up 0.5 somewhere and start to think for just 0.5 more I can get Ederson. Then before you know you'll spend 0.5 more and rationalise a downgrade elsewhere. Hence why I've just gone with a 4.5. Prices me out of all upgrade thoughts lol

Yes, kinda. With nothing in the 5m bracket, you either go premium or cheap.
To my mind, premium means set for the season. Cheap means frequent transfers chasing form, fixures, next bandwagon and general instability.

Think he will match Lloris/Kepa/Pickford in overall points at the end of the season...probably best value keeper even

last season when Hazard wasn't in the team Jorginho took a penalty. Willian might want to take them this year though. Abraham maybe, Luiz maybe, someone else maybe. Jorginho isn't a given imo

Quite like this actually but I'm expecting to be shot down ....

Heaton (if he goes to villa) 4.0
Christensen/Zouma Gomez/ matiep taa Coleman kwp

    Brooks Salah sterling Perez dedonker

    Wilson Vardy Greenwood

Obviously dependent on which pool defender and Chelsea defender at the cheap price is first choice. Would rotate kwp and Chelsea defender and Brooks some weeks as well

I thought Heaton was likely to be first choice at Burnley??

Ok team. I wouldn't trust Bournemouth defender so swap Ake. Also you have, Kelly, Dendoncker, Greenwood and DCL who are not nailed. (Same might be with Perez)

Could Ederson and 4.5 score better? Walker has minimal attacking threat and will miss a few anyway.

That’s a good idea. Will have a play around and see how it looks. Alternatively could swap to one up top and have Ederson and walker
