Highlights show VVD having 3 big chances - one saved, one hit the post and one went wide. All of them from Trent's corners. Robbo got the hockey assist for Origi's goal. And it seems like Gomez played RB for part of the game too.

In my opinion, having 3 defenders is best
Salah wasn't really on form last season
And liverpool defenders will score more than 200 points for half of salah's price
And makes the way to get kane in!

      1. JohnnyMagrinho
          4 years, 8 months ago

Yeah, I know what you mean.

22 goals and 12 assists really isn't that great for a midfielder whatsoever.

Utter rubbish. Wouldn't want him anywhere near my team with stats like that.

You're mental. Salah top scored in the game...

Just because he didn't score 300 points.

That's the problem. I think at the moment De Gea and Kepa are safer at that price. Kepa especially.

NDombele looks like a quality signing and may help their defence.

The issue I have is their backline. The full backs leaving isn't ideal, and Vert (32), Toby (30) & Lloris (32) are getting on a bit. Bit of a question mark against their defence currently.

Are their first 5 fixtures actually good for defensive returns?

Watford Bournemouth and Wolves are strong going forwards, and I have a feeling Villa will be too with Wesley, Jota & Graelish. Could see a clean sheet against Palace, but it depends where Wilf is playing.

            Maybe. Strong chance creation stats.

Though as David pointed out, a lot of those chances are low percentage from corners. Think Coleman actually had a higher xA over the last 10 games to Digne.

I agree. Gueye is one of the players we need the most, we've got so used to him doing all the work for the back four. Still, I do think we have a solid set of defenders these days and a good run of fixtures at the opening should see us settle in hopefully. I'm keeping Coleman in.

I've probably had about 50 drafts and have a shortlist of about 10 left with my current setup being very templatey. Only one of them was Salahless and that was the Pool defence triple up which I ruled out pretty quickly. I've seen him as essential and he probably is but having watched a lot of City in pre-season I think Sterling might be even more so, he's looked awesome (maybe not the pen!) and also a decent chance he plays as a striker for first few with Aguero and Jesus late back to training. I'll probably include both but I've just done my first serious Salahless team and it's pretty tempting, or am I being daft?

      A) Salah / King / Jota or Delo / Zinc
      B) Fraser / Vardy / Wilson / Laporte

It feels like the other 3 'upgrades' could easily cover the points gap between Salah and Fraser. Major downside with B is it leaves only solid captain option of Sterling.

I hear you & it does look good on paper. I'd go with him, for two reasons.

        1) If he explodes against Norwich, you'll kick yourself and probably need a wildcard to get him in.

        2) His captain potential offers points and peace of mind.

I've got Salah, Sterling and Kane & 4 premium defenders. I fully expect to lose one though if I need funds. But I can't risk not having any of them, tbh

I've gone for a team without a "big hitter" striker, but I think it's still strong - what does everyone think on this?

      Ryan (Button)

TAA / Laporte / Digne / Robertson (Kelly)

Siggy / Sterling / Salah (Jorginho / Romeu)

      Deulofeu / King / Sharp

I could get Vardy in if I downgraded Siggy & Laporte. Any necessary changes for now?

Can't understand their apparent obsession with signing Longstaff. Had a few good games before his injury, but didn't look much more than a fairly average midfield water carrier. Will be a useful player for Newcastle, but not one who'd push Man Utd up towards challenging the top 4.

Agree. Can see why they wanted Rice - he's proved himself at this level, but Longstaff's had a dozen PL games and didn't look anything special. An upgrade on Fred, I suppose.

Even if they were interested in Rice, he won't sign for them. At the moment, Longstaff is having a re-think about joining utd.

You have to assume United have scouted him more thoroughly than the handful of PL games he had.

Salah wasnt really on form last year (16% goal conversion vs 22% prior year) but he top scored in the game

After nearly 600 points in two seasons do we need to wake up to the fact that he's on the way to being one of if not 'the' outright best player ever to be available in FPL, and that's including the likes of lamps, Gerrard, Henry, CR7 etc?

He's not there yet, but another 270-ish points this year leaves him on over 850 from 3 seasons

Kane by contrast is a fantastic player, but for me, like most forwards he has struggled to compete with the elite mids over the long term (200-ish points seems to be around his ceiling, even when scoring 30 goals)

Throw in his injuries and he's just not someone I can put in my team early doors, despite the good fixtures every other week and the kind price tag

it's not always same, no one has payed attention to this, the 10 games harry kane missed in last season:
            Fulham A
            Watford H
            Newcastle H
            Leicester H
            Huddersfield H

            Brighton H
            Westahm H
            Bou A

              Yep

He had a disproportionate number of tricky home fixtures in particular last time out.

Posted this a few times but even withdrawn role let him score as many points as Sterling until he got injured last season.

If you gave him 20 appearance points 10 goals for another 40 points, and 10-15 baps that would add 70 points onto his 160 putting him on 230

He's have scored 27 goals, got 6 assists and still not really troubling the 250 barrier

The guy could hattrick in GW1 very easily... But is his game really as well rewarded by the poits system as it should be?

The 11.0 is at least a huge positive for his owners for sure

Are Villa doing a Fulham here?

I know they had a thin squad but I'm counting 11 new signings so far - 10 excluding Mings.

Change your squad and you lose the advantage of having a successful side and approach to take on the problem PL sides you're competing against.

I quite like the squad they're building. McGinn and Graelish are very good players in the centre, and will continue where they left off last season. Wesley, Jota & Guilbert look like good signings and linked up really nice against Walsall.

They don't play Walsall every week. All unproven PL players. Will avoid to start with. Easy to transfer in if they do well.

              I know

But there again most of the signings Fulham made were seen as good news at the time. They snatched most of them from other PL clubs chasing the same players.

It's a lot of churn. I imagine it depends on keeping the same core.

As a villa fan I completely disagree with the Fulham comparisons. We have signed 3 of the players we had on loan last year, 2 of whom where essential to our promotion. We released something like 7 players who all played roles in our team whether that be starting or from the bench so a big investment was needed.

The core of our team of McGinn, grealish, Mings and el ghazi will remain. We needed a new rb & lb, and we need another player to start with McGinn and grealish in the middle. Tammy Abraham left so obviously we needed to replace him, when we got Wesley. We arguably had only one winger good enough for the prem so was certain we would have to invest.

The main difference is we have a strategy to our transfer unlike Fulham. Many have played under smith or are players we had on loan par 2 or 3. He is trying to sign young talent that will adapt easily to the league I.e. Targett. Fulham however signed 5 or so on the last day, we have had a clear plan, and done all our business nice and early. I for one, am very positive.

              Okay

Hadn't realised there were 3 returning loanees - thought it was just Mings. It's still a lot of churn. I very much hope it's not the case. But the we need a new lb and rb sounds familiar as is not good enough for the prem.

Im speaking here as a Palace fan who remembers staying up with probably the weakest promoted side ever. Players not good enough for the prem can kick on. Jedinak was magnificent for us but no one but no one had him in that class before we went up.

Hope the balance is right between new and old.

Agreed a lot of churn, but business done early with 3 more games to gel. Yeah defo a big jump to the prem so impossible to predict. Cheers mate all the best for the season.

I think where you're ahead right now is getting business done early. Fulham were using right up to the deadline.

Palace of course only start looking for players in early August. We invariably bomb at the beginning.

Hey guys, I got hold of the game by game data for every player last smeason and have done some analysis. I will quickly share the Home away analysis and other analysis I will share later. Maybe write a community article early next month.

          1. Sterling and Aguero by far biggest scorers at home - 9.36 and 9.31 points per start (>55 mins played). Mane at 8.14 and Salah at 7.74. Trent next at 7.7 and Sane 7.27. Auba a few places further down at 6.44 and Kane at 4.83. Kane scored more away than home. Only two forwards featured in the top 20 pps scorers at home, 12 Mids and 6 defenders. You can probably guess most of the names.

          2. Biggest Differences between home and away was Aguero scoring 5.13 pps more at home followed by Sterling at 3.77. Other names high on the list are Bobby Reid, Mane, Babel, Luiz, Nacho Monreal, King, Kolasinac. Two Arsenal names indicate their home and away fortunes. Salah was more balanced in home and away fixtures at +1.74 at home. Kane at -1.9 and Wilson at -1.99 and Zaha at -1.2

          3. Son was the highest pps scorer at 7.22 away. Followed by Wilson, Kane, Sane, Martial and Salah. Vardy a notable mention in 11th place.

Overall not sure how this helps. But Man City Attack and Arsenal defence stronger at home. Tottenham stronger away perhaps in attack. Vardy, Zaha and Wilson being better away may indicate their ability on the counter attack and running in behind against teams attacking at home. Very few forwards feature on both home and away lists indicating the greater points and value and options in defence and midfield.

I will later post top six and rest analysis and then hopefully a combination of the two factors.

The Kane data is skewed by the games he was fit for imo -see the post from Jacky Boy above.

The one that sticks out for me is Wilson. Bournemouth aren't a conventional counterattacking side.

The problem with TAA is that if Milner starts he takes away some of the set pieces from him. And looking at preseason Milner looks set to start first couple. Also takes away penalties from Salah but hr scored very few last season so he won't suffer a dip compared to that.

Unless it is predictable that a player will play either zero minutes or at least 55, I still prefer points per game.

For example, Sterling averaged 8.6ppg in home matches, which is slightly less than your 9.36 because it includes a few in which he played 1-54 minutes.
Aguero averaged 8.1ppg in home matches, compared to your 9.31.
Mane averaged 8.2ppg in home matches, which is actually fractionally higher than your 8.14
Salah averaged 7.7ppg in home matches, which is the same as your figure since he played every home match and always for at least 55 minutes.
TAA averaged 7.3ppg in home matches, compared to your 7.7.

Taken together with the number of matches played, their away form and how well two captains can be rotated with each other, Salah and Sterling appears to be the best combination - but if you also take prices into account then TAA may be worth considering as an alternative to Salah.
Mane would have been another alternative worth considering if his price had been a bit lower and he wasn't going to be late back from AFCON.

TAA's ppg in away matches was 5.4 (compared with 5.3 for Sterling, 4.2 for Aguero, 4.5 for Mane and 5.9 for Salah).

Points per game a very useful metric. However like all stats it has its advantages and disadvantages. With pps I wanted to compare the player potential if they were free from rotation / sub appearances. Sometimes injuries to competing positions or transfers out can make even rotation prone players free from rotation / sub appearances. In those cases this metric is quite useful. Ideally you would want to use both. Sane is a perfect example where ppg is a better metric but if suddenly he does become nailed then pps becomes a better metric to judge him.

If I'm reading this correctly, you want to captain Salah at home and Son away, right? They do dovetail h/a nicely.
I'll have KdB as my placeholder for 2 GW then do a straight swap to Son GW3.

Or to put it more clearly. If both Salah and Sterling have home matches against bottom half teams then pick Sterling. Of both have away matches pick Salah or Son if you have him.

Son's ppg in away matches last season was only 4.7, which was inferior to Kane, Wilson, Salah, Zaha, Vardy, Laporte, TAA, Sterling, VVD, Zinchenko and Aubameyang.

So if you have both Salah and Sterling and both are at home or both away and the opposition is similar then my recommendation would be to captain Sterling when both are at home, or Salah when both are away.

If you want to captain a Spurs player in away matches then go for Kane, not Son.

My stats are based on pps. Which is points per start. Typically ppg is lower than pps when players make sub appearances. So if Son is coming on as a sub often and not starting in away matches, then maybe you don't want him in the first place.

Looking at a KDB over Sterling team - not short term but what looks better medium term

          A.Sterling Brooks Moura/7.5
          B. KDB Richarlson Pogba

Coming around to thinking B is better but then I either have to perma captain Salah or take a C punt occasionally. What you think?

Perma-captain is a big no for me. But you can of course switch Mo and Sterling sometimes.

KdB can also become Vardy who must be a potential captain when fixtures turn.

            I'd go B

It's difficult to say to be honest.
In the good old days for United transfer business was a lot easier, all the top players wanted to go there, and back then, teams outside the top 2/3 were powerless to stop them.
                      (think Rooney, Ferdinand, Sheringham, RvP)
These days, the top 10 PL clubs don't need to sell their players, United aren't the draw they once were, and it's a lot more complicated with agents involved.

It does surprise me how easy people think it is to do a £50-60m deal, just because they play championship manager.

                        Agreed on the last point.

Herrera's departure and the immense pressure to sign a centre-back does make me think they'll grab two though. Many people expect an overhaul, but that's just not realistic.

United have always been about signing the best players available, even if that position didn't specifically need strengthening (Look at City who have basically 8 players competing for 4 spots in attack). I don't see the reason why they shouldn't sign B. Fernandes who looks a potential world beater to me and is basically begging to come to the Premier League, even if he technically isn't the type of player United currently need.

I think that strategy effectively died with Alexis Sanchez.

Anyway, that's not how City works. They needed a DM, they got the best one. They don't need any more strikers or attacking midfielders - didn't get any.

Of course United want to sign the best players, but so do City, Liverpool, and Tottenham, and arguably those teams are more appealing to those players now. United will always be attractive because of the history, but 10 years ago, United had the pick of who they wanted, they don't anymore.

In recent times the stella signings haven't worked anyway, Di Maria, Falcao, Sanchez, Pogba etc - all United fans were delighted when they agreed to join, and now they sign twitter petitions to get them sold.

Lingard and Mata are rotating in the #10 position at the moment and have both done well, particularly Mata.

Fernandes does look amazing though, and would definitely improve the team. But it's possible a number of clubs are vying for his signature behind the scenes.

I think Maguire will happen soon, but yes as you say, everyone knows United need a centre back, therefore the price goes up.
I suppose it'll have a knock on effect, when Leicester look to sign a replace and have to pay £25-30m for Dunk, or Tarkowski - because everyone will know they need to replace Maguire, and have £80m in the bank to do so.

Not sure on the midfielder though.
Herrera was never really first choice was he, and you seem to set up with only 2 'holding' midfielders now, so with Pogba, McTominey, Fred, and Matic, you're pretty well covered I'd say.

United in preseason look like they are playing a different formation to what they did last year.

The players that you have all have great PPG but you have lost so much flexibility by having such a difficult structure to shift money around.
I also have a Salahless team with expensive defence but with a few more price points to help with jumping on early form players.

I'm definitely only going for one of Salah and Sterling. All the data analysis I do of last season and also this season's projected points shows that triple Liverpool defence with Sterling captain is optimal.

Whether I take the risk and actually start week one without the highest scoring player in the game for one of his easiest fixtures of the season....not sure

This is very very similar to my team.

Barkley is tempting me but can't quite convince myself to get him in from week 1.

Pogba playing too deep for me, yes he has penalties, but prefer Sigurdsson for the price.
AWB offers little attacking threat, and therefore not good value.
Too much competition in the Barkley role - RLC, Mount - but watching in preseason.
Pulisic - again, wait and see how he does in the PL, won't be considering starting with him.

..potentially lots of value at Chelsea, watch preseason to see if a clear first team emerges.

...same with United attack actually, Martial, James, Rashford all could be good value if first choice, and firing.

Agreed on Pogba 🙂 Been a little deeper in pre-season, playing at the base of a 4231. He's been magnificent, but not ideal for FPL. I'm sure he'll get goals and assists, but maybe not at the level required for 8.5m.

Martial and Rashford are two players to monitor for sure.

I really want Alonso, seem to remember he had higher PPG when Hazard wasn't playing but don't have the data at hand to check/back this up

I've got Alonso in my draft, hoping Frank will send him up the lurk around the oppo penalty area like in days of yore. If he's not a starter, I'll get Luiz and save 0.5. I've got Mount at the moment, again on the premise that he'll start. If not I'll lose him.

united - well, first name on my squad sheet is Greenwood!

You actually think Greenwood will get game time?

I absolutely do. Of course when he does, he'll be on everyone's bench.

He's on my bench in a lot of my drafts but just as a way of saving money. If he actually gets on the pitch it would be great news.

But that's the thing. It's not great news when he comes on as sub, scores and he's on our benches!

Notice I wrote 'he's the first name on my SQUAD sheet' = not team sheet.
I mean he and Donckers are perfect subs.
