The FPL lessons learned from Wolves’ Europa League debut

Wolves 2-0 Crusaders

Goals: Diogo Jota (£6.5m), Ruben Vinagre (£4.5m)

Assists: Adama Traoré (£5.0m), Joao Moutinho (£5.5m)

Diogo Jota (£6.5m) picked up where 2018/19 left off as he scored Wolves first competitive goal of the new campaign.

Amid plenty of Fantasy interest this summer, the Portuguese international gave his side a deserved lead in the 37th minute at Molineux.

Loitering in the penalty box he pulled off a piece of exceptional technique as he slammed in Adama Traoré‘s (£5.0m) cross, which came in just behind him, on the half-volley.

In their first proper fixture of 2019/20, Nuno Espirito Santo retained Wolves’ 3-5-2 system which helped them to great success last term.

Fantasy managers will have been pleased to see the wing-backs continuing to play an important part in Wolves’ attacking play.

Traoré, standing in for the injured Matt Doherty (£6.0m), was effectively playing as a wide-forward on the right and it was this space that allowed him to cross for Jota’s first goal.

Meanwhile, Jonny (£5.5m) added found himself in plenty of space on the left, while it was his replacement Ruben Vinagre (£4.5m) whose advanced positioning led to the third goal.

Joao Moutinho (£5.5m) played a ball into the box from deep, where Vinagre was waiting at the back post and he was able to tuck the ball away after goalkeeper Sean O’Neill allowed it to squirm through his grasp.

It must be said that the end-product of the wing-backs was a little inconsistent on the night but it is still early days in pre-season so this might be an area that improves closer to Gameweek 1.

Elsewhere in the team, there was another start at centre-forward for budget midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White (£5.0m).

He has been deployed alongside Jota in all three of Wolves’ pre-season matches now, including the Europa League win over Crusaders, scoring against Newcastle and offering the outside chance of an exceptional out-of-position opportunity this season.

However, we do just have to temper any excitement over Gibbs-White as a Fantasy asset this year with some disclaimers.

The first is that he had been playing up-front while Raúl Jiménez (£7.5m) was absent from friendly matches as a result of his extended leave following the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

After his time off, the Mexican is already back in the Wolves fold, named on the bench on Thursday night and coming on in the 58th minute.

With two weeks to go until Gameweek 1, we have to assume that Jiménez will be working towards starting at Leicester on Sunday, August 11.

However, Doherty might also hold the key here as it is his injury that is forcing Nuno to deploy Traoré at right wing-back.

If Doherty is back in time for Gameweek 1, then Traoré might also be in the frame for a centre-forward berth if Jiménez is not necessarily ready in time.

On the injury front, Wolves will currently be sweating on the fitness of central midfielder Ruben Neves (£5.5m).

He was replaced in the 58th minute with a side injury and was taken to hospital after the game for scans.

“(Neves) is struggling. Let’s see. It was a hard knock and he’s in pain now. We will take care of him.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

Jota (right) had several chances to score against Crusaders

How much we can take forward from this game is tricky to assess though.

Obviously, the level of opposition Wolves faced was not exactly at Premier League level. Crusaders finished fourth in last season’s Northern Ireland Premiership, qualifying for the Europa League through winning the Irish Cup.

Furthermore, the club only offered players their first professional contracts at the start of last season.

For that reason, many might have expected Wolves to win by a bigger margin but there are still a few mitigating factors here.

Crusaders spent virtually the entire game sitting in a compact formation, with two banks of five, in an attempt to frustrate Wolves’ play. That’s a difficult prospect for even top-flight teams, especially at this early stage of pre-season.

“It’s tough, the season starts earlier. Players come in on different dates.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

Despite the Irish side trying to make things difficult for them, Wolves still managed to fire off 30 shots (10 on target) and visiting goalkeeper O’Neill was a busy man all night, working particularly hard to thwart Jota.

“We showed we are ready but not as sharp and accurate as we should be.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

Wolves XI (3-5-2): Patrício; Boly, Coady, Bennett; Jonny (Vinagre 64′), Neves (Jiménez 58′), Moutinho, Dendoncker, Traoré; Jota, Gibbs-White (Saïss 85′).

Yeah looks alright, I wouldn’t pick dSilva personally. I reckon he won’t see as many minutes this season. Maybe downgrade Allison to upgrade him.

It’s quite a maverick team tbh. Some good relatively overlooked options in Azpi, Perez and Jota, but I’m not fond of Dilva given how he’s unlikely to play so much this season and you’ve already chosen Agüero. Straight swap to Fraser?

Also, AWB is one to watch for me, since we first need to see whether Man Utd can regain their defensive solidity again, and, at 5.5m, he’s hardly a cheap punt for someone who isn’t incredibly attacking. Martial too looks promising but is very much a form player. Upgrading AWB to Digne and then downgrading Martial to Zaha / Anderson may be good moves...

Thoughts on this lot? Played around with pricier options up top and cheaper gks/defs but I like the balance of this.

    Ederson,

    Robertson, Digne, Zinchenko, Vertonghen

    Salah, Sterling, Lucas Moura, Sigurdsson

    King, Jota

    Button, Greenwood, Leitner, Rico

    RMT please?

    Pope (Heaton / Henderson)

    Robbo, TAA, Laporte, Digne (Taylor)

Salah, Fraser, Perez, Trezeguet / El Ghazi (Dendoncker)

    Kane, Wilson (Greenwood)

I would plan to bring Sterling in when Kane’s fixtures turn and vice-versa but essentially have two premium attackers at any time (most likely Salah as a season keeper)

Maybe Digne to Coleman and Wilson to King to allow Fraser to KDB?

Or Wilson to King to allow the fourth mid to become Zaha if he moves to Everton

      1. Dyballer
        • 5 Years
        4 years, 9 months ago

That first trio of swaps were part of my original team haha, but I thought Fraser would be a good makeweight for future Sterling transfers when Kane downgrades to Jota / Wood etc.

The second suggestion however would be extremely tempting thanks!

I think Fraser is already a better pick than KDB, even before you consider the downgrades you suggest to achieve it.

I published a version of the spreadsheet I use on Reddit late last season to help people navigate the Blank & DGWs. I've made some changes over the past few weeks to it and ready to release the newer version for anyone that finds this sort of thing useful. For me putting my various drafts like a 5atb team, 3 liv defenders, Salah, Salahless, and being able to see how they look over multiple weeks is really helpful and makes decisions a bit easier. I'd love to see some other peoples sheets if they feel like sharing, especially any with some added functionality beyond your team & transfers

Below is an explanation of the various pages on it.

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1y_olsTbMU7hHLlmpPXBeDKTkB0QzTu6EVM7CIJ3CnTs/copy

Please note this page is designed with Desktop in mind as I do all my FPL work on my computer. It does work on Mobile also but isn't designed specifically for that. Read through the Notes page before filling it in to get a sense of how the sheet works and any questions or bugs please ask/report them below!

    Sheet 1 - Notes
Quick guide to the spreadsheet with the most important information on functionality. Please read fully! Suggestions for improving or making this page more clear? Hit me up!

    Sheet 2 - Team
The meat & bones of the sheet. Fill in your GW1 Team and the rest of the sheet will automatically fill up. Here's a few notable things from top to bottom...
    - Current GW & Chip indicator. As you use Chips they won't be an option again. When using your FH chip the following week your team should reset. This is shown working in GW2
    - Tick Boxes to Bench players
    - Player names from Drop down list, start typing a player name here in GW1 and suggestions will pop up
    - Following the Player names are 2 Columns, the 1st with their upcoming fixture and the following blank to allow space for DGWs
    - Fixtures are colour coded for Easy/Hard/Normal/Potential Blank/Blank. Liverpool have a confirmed blank on GW18 so have a look to see this in action.
    - Potential Blank, Blank, & DGWs will be automatically updated from another sheet of mine.
    - Free Transfers tracker, accumulates when you don't enter any transfers below it. Using your FH or WC chip resets the counter.
    - Transfer Space. The 1st column is for the outgoing player, 2nd column for the incoming player. This is shown working in GW2

    Sheet 3 - Tools
This sheet is where Hard/Easy fixture data is pulled from. Edit this as you see fit ensuring to keep the current formatting
Future tools will be published here

    Sheet 4 - Fixtures (Hidden)
This is where fixture data, blanks, doubles, etc, are pulled from. Please to not edit this page as it will update itself automatically from another spreadsheet of mine. The FDR system on this sheet is incomplete and I will be changing this in the coming weeks.

    Sheet 5 - Players (Hidden)
This is where the player names are pulled from. Please to not edit this page as it will update itself automatically from another spreadsheet of mine.
    - Players with the same last name will be entered manually on my end to reflect which team they play for. For example Gray_wat & Gray_lei
    - I have included alternative or shorthand versions of some players such as Dilva Bilva & Kepa
    - Any duplicate players giving problems or popular shorthand that should be included please comment below!

I asked this question a couple of days ago because I’m in the same boat. I included striker in the conundrum as well, the resounding answer was defender. I personally prefer the excitement of having an extra attacking player though. I’m still undecided but on a 3-5-2 at the moment.

This sounds about right. If you look at past total points, the 6m defenders comfortably score higher than the mids and forwards, but there’s something about the thrill of having another attacker that makes people think otherwise. It’s steady returns vs occasional / very rare hauls; at 6m, you should never be thinking of captaining either, so I would advise getting a defender like Digne or Azpi if you haven’t already

      I prefer 6m def over 6m mid
Weirdly though the answer would have been the other way round if you had 6.5m

Maddison to Perez or Tielemans, VVD to Robertson

Hold off on man utd for now, city for 5.5 probably a better option.
I'd say Perez and Tielemans is too much, fixtures not great.
Maybe a 4th defender, while Allison is not great Liverpool value since he is gonna get outperformed by the defenders.

    Thoughts on this 541?

I don't really like the strikers this year but having only one reliable bench player is a worry.

    Hendo, 4.5
    TAA, VVD, Laporte, Zinchenko, Coleman
    Salah, Sterling, Siggy, Tielemans, Dendoncker
    Wilson, 4.5, 4.5

I would downgrade Zinchenko (or Coleman if you want) to a 4.5m who would give you a bit more flexibility in their ‘benchability’. Then downgrade Siggy to a 7m like Zaha / Mili / Anderson and upgrade a 4.5m FWD to Jota / Deulo / Wood

You end up with two reliable bench players as well as more flexibility in formation!

Obviously very off template given who’s missing in midfield but I love this look in weeks 1 and 2

    Henderson
    TAA VVD Luiz Coleman
    KdB Fraser Perez
    Kane Auba Wilson

No Salah or Sterling is a huge concern. Whenever they haul it will set you back so far due to the likelihood of people captaining them and their effective owenership

I agree with Bambi so wouldn’t do it myself but I really like the look of it. Could really pay off. Depends if you want to go high risk high reward or play it safe early on

Think I'm gonna keep Angelino and two rotating 4.5s in my team until the Community Shield. If he doesn't start, then it's Aubameyang to Lacazette and then upgrade to Laporte and keep my rotating defenders or Walker, downgrade one to a 4.0 and get Coleman

    A) Kane - Perez - Coleman

    or

    B) Vardy - Siggy - Digne

    ?

If you had to ditch one of Salah (for Mane) or Sterling (for KDB or Bernardo) to use the money elsewhere, which would you go for, assuming no alternative Liverpool / City midfielders or forwards in the team?

If I was to drop one it would be sterling ➡️ Kdb. Mane may not play the 1st game anyway.

Havent changed my team in over a week now. Partly due to boredom. Anything bad?

    Pope/4.5 - 4.0
    TAA - Robertson - Digne - Zinchenko
    Salah - Sterling - Brooks - Perez/Tielemans
    Vardy - Deulofeu

    Kelly - Dendonker - Greenwood

Looks good. I’m not surprised you haven’t been changed it!

I don’t like the trio of 6.5s much though

Super similar to mine, and a lot of other people's.

Only differences I have are AWB instead of Zinch (but that's a placeholder position anyway). I have Fraser and Wilson where you have Brooks and Vardy.

      It's good I like it!

Been stuck on this team for weeks now, would love any thoughts on a potential rethink:

    Pope (McGovern)
    TAA VVD Digne Zinchenko Dunk
    Salah Sterling Perez (Dendoncker, Hayden)
    Kane King (Greenwood)

sterling to KDB for an extra 2.5m to spread? As you already have 2 big hitters in salah and kane.

If I’d drop anyone, it’s probably be Kane

Rather inflexible... how do you jump on a rashford, Vardy Siggy or pogba if you need?

        Probably wildcard or dropping Kane

Does Klopp rotate centre backs when Gomez and Matip are fit? Because if not, whoever starts the Community Shield could be gold.

Tempting isn’t it, but not sure if Gomez is taking up a lpool slot and not providing much beyond clean sheet potential - and rotation risk....
