The FPL lessons learned from Wolves’ Europa League debut

Wolves 2-0 Crusaders

Goals: Diogo Jota (£6.5m), Ruben Vinagre (£4.5m)

Assists: Adama Traoré (£5.0m), Joao Moutinho (£5.5m)

Diogo Jota (£6.5m) picked up where 2018/19 left off as he scored Wolves first competitive goal of the new campaign.

Amid plenty of Fantasy interest this summer, the Portuguese international gave his side a deserved lead in the 37th minute at Molineux.

Loitering in the penalty box he pulled off a piece of exceptional technique as he slammed in Adama Traoré‘s (£5.0m) cross, which came in just behind him, on the half-volley.

In their first proper fixture of 2019/20, Nuno Espirito Santo retained Wolves’ 3-5-2 system which helped them to great success last term.

Fantasy managers will have been pleased to see the wing-backs continuing to play an important part in Wolves’ attacking play.

Traoré, standing in for the injured Matt Doherty (£6.0m), was effectively playing as a wide-forward on the right and it was this space that allowed him to cross for Jota’s first goal.

Meanwhile, Jonny (£5.5m) added found himself in plenty of space on the left, while it was his replacement Ruben Vinagre (£4.5m) whose advanced positioning led to the third goal.

Joao Moutinho (£5.5m) played a ball into the box from deep, where Vinagre was waiting at the back post and he was able to tuck the ball away after goalkeeper Sean O’Neill allowed it to squirm through his grasp.

It must be said that the end-product of the wing-backs was a little inconsistent on the night but it is still early days in pre-season so this might be an area that improves closer to Gameweek 1.

Elsewhere in the team, there was another start at centre-forward for budget midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White (£5.0m).

He has been deployed alongside Jota in all three of Wolves’ pre-season matches now, including the Europa League win over Crusaders, scoring against Newcastle and offering the outside chance of an exceptional out-of-position opportunity this season.

However, we do just have to temper any excitement over Gibbs-White as a Fantasy asset this year with some disclaimers.

The first is that he had been playing up-front while Raúl Jiménez (£7.5m) was absent from friendly matches as a result of his extended leave following the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

After his time off, the Mexican is already back in the Wolves fold, named on the bench on Thursday night and coming on in the 58th minute.

With two weeks to go until Gameweek 1, we have to assume that Jiménez will be working towards starting at Leicester on Sunday, August 11.

However, Doherty might also hold the key here as it is his injury that is forcing Nuno to deploy Traoré at right wing-back.

If Doherty is back in time for Gameweek 1, then Traoré might also be in the frame for a centre-forward berth if Jiménez is not necessarily ready in time.

On the injury front, Wolves will currently be sweating on the fitness of central midfielder Ruben Neves (£5.5m).

He was replaced in the 58th minute with a side injury and was taken to hospital after the game for scans.

“(Neves) is struggling. Let’s see. It was a hard knock and he’s in pain now. We will take care of him.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

Jota (right) had several chances to score against Crusaders

How much we can take forward from this game is tricky to assess though.

Obviously, the level of opposition Wolves faced was not exactly at Premier League level. Crusaders finished fourth in last season’s Northern Ireland Premiership, qualifying for the Europa League through winning the Irish Cup.

Furthermore, the club only offered players their first professional contracts at the start of last season.

For that reason, many might have expected Wolves to win by a bigger margin but there are still a few mitigating factors here.

Crusaders spent virtually the entire game sitting in a compact formation, with two banks of five, in an attempt to frustrate Wolves’ play. That’s a difficult prospect for even top-flight teams, especially at this early stage of pre-season.

“It’s tough, the season starts earlier. Players come in on different dates.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

Despite the Irish side trying to make things difficult for them, Wolves still managed to fire off 30 shots (10 on target) and visiting goalkeeper O’Neill was a busy man all night, working particularly hard to thwart Jota.

“We showed we are ready but not as sharp and accurate as we should be.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

Wolves XI (3-5-2): Patrício; Boly, Coady, Bennett; Jonny (Vinagre 64′), Neves (Jiménez 58′), Moutinho, Dendoncker, Traoré; Jota, Gibbs-White (Saïss 85′).

    Please RMT

    Ryan

    TAA, VVD, zinchenko, Digne
    Sterling, Salah, brooks, tielemans
    Deulefeou, lacazette

Thinking of swapping laca for Barry after gw2. Which gives me the option to upgrade zinchenko to walker if he’s not a starter for them.

    Also deulefeuo, king or Jota?

If Zaha moves to Everton, where would he play relative to Richarlison and Siggy? And do you feel he'd be the best pick of the 3 based on his 7m price tag?

    Thanks

I do, yes. My guess is Rich up top, Zaha inside left, Siggy in the hole, Bernard or someone on the right.

Right now, assuming Gueye moves, it looks like:

      Gomes - Delph
      Rich - Siggy - Bernard
      DCL

Zaha would displace DCL or Bernard. The former would probaby mean Rich at CF.

Think given the price Zaha would be the best pick.

      Zaha-Siggy-Rich behind the striker maybe?

If Zaha wins as many penalties as he did at Palace that could make Siggy worth the extra 1m.

Thoughts on this? It's the only draft I've made that satisfies all of the criteria I want:

    - At least one Liverpool attacker and defender.
    - At least one City attacker and defender.
    - Two Everton players for exceptional early fixture strength.
    - At least one Bournemouth player for good early fixture strength.
    - At least one Leicester attacker (despite poor early fixtures, I feel they're best value for money this season, fancy them to finish top 6).
    - High price point player at each position.

    Pope (Button)
    Trent Digne Coleman Zinchenko (Kelly)
    Salah Sterling Tielemans Brooks (Dendoncker)

    Good day,

    I need some assistance please.

After being settled with my team for sometime (a few days unchanged).

I just noticed the previously categorized midfielders switched strikers, take up my 3 forward slots. (King / Jota / Delefaou )

Is this cause for concern in the long run....in the short run (1-2 gameweeks) works nicely no?

    Pope
Arnold - Van Dijk - Digne
    Salah - Sterling - Moura - Perez
    Deulafou - King - Jota

Sub: Heaton - Norwood - Kelly - Aarons

I'd not worry about the change of category (King was a forward last year as well, mid the year before). They're all decent choices for that price - nothing much better. I think that's a pretty good team tbh; I'd prefer to drop Heaton to a 4.0 and upgrade one of the bench to someone who'll definitely play.

I just don't like the idea of choosing players that I know I want to transfer out. But of course it's your team and you can do whatever you want. I like the team as it stands though.

I feel like you will be losing value doing this trading in and out thing. If you want King some weeks and Jota some weeks, just get both.

What I mean is this: If king goes up 0.1M in cost, and then you sell him to bring in Jota, You'll be selling him at 6.5 but it will cost you 6.6 to buy him back later. So you'll need to find an offset somewhere else

Nothing wrong with a plan to switch between players at similar price points. I also have those price points in attack and will switch between players depending on fixtures and to some extent form.
The problem with planning a week 1 transfer is that a player generally goes and gets a big score and everyone starts getting him in. Then you either miss out on the early form pick, get stuck with Moura or take a hit.

    4.5m - Button
    VVD - Laporte - Azpi - 2x4.5 rotating
    Mo - KDB - Frazer - Dendo - Romeu
    Laca - Vardy - 6.5m

Couple of bold calls here, any thoughts?
    Alisson (4.0)
    Rob AWB Coleman
    Salah Bernardo Maddison Zaha
    Kane King Jota
    (Stephens Dunk Mings)

I like it. Would have Siggy or Richarlison over Bernardo at his price personally. Not sold on AWB just yet with his early fixtures but could prove a great long-term pick.

Cheers for the input - my thinking was
Don’t want to go without any City but can’t afford Kun/Raz atm
AWB is a 6.0 player for 5.5 so a great long term asset as well as a BAPS machine - even without cleanies

Liking the Maddison and Zaha picks as well. I've gone for Maddison too, reckon that 0.5m extra over Perez/Tielemans will pay dividends. If Zaha signs for Everton reckon everyone on here will jump on him straight away.

Can't seem to find a good goalkeeper pairing that i'm satisfied with.

Don't want any piece of Brighton. They leaked goals like a sieve last season, can only expect more of the same under a manager that will likely have them trying to play a bit more.
Pope I wouldn't mind but the lad seems injury prone which is the last thing ya want in a £4.5m keeper.
Bournemouth who knows. Travers finished the season but Howe hasn't seemed to settle on a #1 and isn't averse to changing his gk.
Norwich have 2 solid keepers in Krul and the newly arrived Fahrmann

If a nailed keeper emerges for Villa I'll probably go for him, otherwise it's Henderson for me once he's added

I've looked at Pickford as well. Depends if you think the Everton defence over-performed second half of the season or if they can continue their run of cleansheets.

This has probably already been covered. But if you pick Henderson, he won’t be able to play against Man United. That’s fine if you’re rotating keepers, but as a set & forget you should keep that in mind

To be fair, every budget goalkeeper has a shocker (zero points or less) at least once a season anyway. Barring a penalty save or some sort of Heaton-esque performance, I wouldn't have expected much more than two points from Henderson at OT anyway.

Really? The likes of Cardiff kept a CS there last season and not much has changed. They've upgraded Young, but still have the same CB's shielded by an ageing Matic.

    1. How many penalties will Jorginho and Noble take for the first 3 gameweeks?
    2. Will Steer play or will Aston Villa get a new goalkeeper?

    Steer
    TAA, Robertson, Digne, Rico
    Fraser, Salah, Sterling, Jorginho
    Vardy, Wilson,

    4.0, Greenwood, Noble, Lundstram

Got Jorginho in my team as it stands (plan to upgrade), and I don't think he's a player you can expect attacking returns from. At the price you're going to get what you pay for: consistent 2-3 point returns. A goal/assist every couple months as a nice surprise probably.

Need some help with KDB v. Sterling debate - Could really save some vital money with the former... Do we really think Sterling is worth the 2.5 extra over De Bruyne??

There's a solid chance Sterling starts the season as City's striker until Aguero/Jesus are back. I'd say he's worth the extra funds.

Yes. I think Sterling is worth it. Could end the season as the top scoring FPL player. The question is whether De Bruyne is also worth it.

Hi. I am entering a pick a team league, where the players can’t be changed the whole season. It’s based on Telegraph scoring, goals +5, assists +3, appearances +2, and deductions for red, yellow, ogs, missed pens. I have to pick 3 midfielders, and a permanent sub. I have Jota (the Wolves one!) and Fraser, and Lanzini (very cheap) as the sub. At the same price for the 3rd midfielder I could have Moutinho, Deleufeu, CHO, Ox, Brooks, Redmond, or Antonio. Any suggestions for who is likely to accumulate the most points over the season, bearing in mind if dropped or injured, they can’t be replaced except by Lanzini??
