Five Man City talking points ahead of the Community Shield final

Manchester City have now completed their pre-season friendly schedule ahead of the 2019/20 season, leaving plenty for Fantasy Premier League managers to chew over.

We will get one final look at Pep Guardiola’s team before the Gameweek 1 deadline when they face Liverpool in the Community Shield final next Sunday.

This presents a fantastic opportunity for Fantasy managers to put to rest any final questions they have about Manchester City assets.

This article highlights five key areas of their team that we should be keeping an eye on at Wembley next weekend.

Front and centre

Sterling in action for Man City during pre-season

The chances of Raheem Sterling (£12.0m) lining up as Manchester City’s centre-forward in Gameweek 1 strengthen with each passing pre-season friendly.

The England international was deployed as the striker in Guardiola’s 4-3-3 system in the win over Yokohama.

He scored in that final game of the tour and has now been involved in six pre-season goals this summer (four his own, two assists).

As has been reportedly already, with Sergio Aguero (£12.0m) and Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) still on international leave following their involvement at the Copa America, Guardiola is clearly preparing Sterling to take their place in the Community Shield and possible beyond that.

We would expect him to start up front against Liverpool on Sunday but the key thing to look out for among Fantasy managers is how he gets on in that role.

It was discussed last week whether a shift to a centre-forward role is always beneficial to a wide-midfield player so an eye test against one of the best defences in the Premier League could prove a helpful test of Sterling’s credentials.

Sanéty Check

Sané’s position in the team came under threat after Sterling started performing well on the left

The implications of Sterling’s role as a centre-forward is also helpful for Fantasy managers in regards to other areas of the Manchester City team.

With the winger being pulled into a central role, it means there is much less competition for the flanks of Guardiola’s front-three.

The absence of Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m), following his successful African Cup of Nations campaign with Algeria, is also a benefit for predicting the team early on.

Leroy Sané (£9.5m) should be the chief beneficiary as he should have unrivalled access to the left flank of Guardiola’s attacking trio.

Despite the uncertainty over his future, the German international has been used extensively on the left-wing in pre-season and has been quite effective too.

After 239 minutes, two goals and one assist, Guardiola has Sané well-prepared for the new campaign and he looks likely to be an important part of the attack against Liverpool.

If he performs well at Wembley, then he could just book himself a place in the Gameweek 1 side.

Where’s Kevin?

De Bruyne has done very well in pre-season for Man City

There were media reports last week that Guardiola wanted to see Kevin de Bruyne (£9.5m) take up a deeper midfield role this season and Fantasy managers will have to keep an eye out for this in the Community Shield final.

In recent games played on tour this dropping deeper has not happened with too much regularity for the Belgian but that may be because of the quality of opposition.

Against Yokohama, de Bruyne was one of the best players on the pitch and emerged with a goal and assist to his name. That took his pre-season tally for goal involvement to four (one goal, three assists).

Despite those encouraging numbers, a match-up with Liverpool will prove a much more reliable event for seeing what de Bruyne’s positioning will be this season.

However, not only do we have to assess where he’s playing, Fantasy managers must also pay attention to whether or not a deeper role actually has any impact on his points potential.

For example, de Bruyne’s hand in set pieces won’t be affected by his positioning. But given his quality, there is still a possibility that de Bruyne could still hang back a bit more, and yet still create a decent number of chances.

Furthermore, the Belgian boasted a better minutes per shot than Sterling in 2018/19 and has historically been accurate from range.

Therefore, a deeper role could unlock other areas of de Bruyne’s Fantasy potential, which is why he should arguably the biggest focus of FPL managers during the Community Shield final.

Left-back… in the changing room?

Zinchenko may yet be the first-choice left-back for Man City at the start of the season

Now that we’ve seen Manchester City play four times in pre-season, we have a better idea of who will start at left-back too.

The signing of Angeliño (£5.0m) this summer complicated the task of predicting who the first-choice was in this position but pre-season line-ups have made things slightly easier.

Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.5m) has recorded more minutes in friendlies at left-back than any other Manchester City player.

His total of 209 is made up of two outings over 60 minutes, and it was the Ukrainian that started in the most recent match against Yokohama.

Admittedly, Angeliño’s pre-season involvement is not that far behind Zinchenko, so it’s hard to be completely certain which one will be favoured in Gameweek 1.

The new signing (or re-signing) has recorded 151 minutes from to starts at left-back this summer.

However, only one of those outings lasted longer than an hour, hence the discrepancy of 54 minutes between him and Zinchenko.

Danilo (£5.0m) has 195 minutes to his name over the summer, just nine shy of Zinchenko, but he has predominantly been used at right-back and is likely to be Kyle Walker‘s (£6.0m) understudy this season.

Also, at least for now, Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) is out of the picture until September according to the most recent reports.

That is a handy development for Fantasy managers as they study the Community Shield for clues about the first-choice left-back.

Zinchenko remains the favourite to start that match, but Angeliño probably has an outside chance of being involved.

On Your Ederson

Ederson is yet to play a single minute of pre-season for Man City

Finally, it has not gone unnoticed that Claudio Bravo (£5.0m) has started and played 90 minutes in every single match of Manchester City’s pre-season so far.

Obviously, we know that Ederson (£6.0m) is still the first-choice at the Eithad Stadium but there could be a slight chance of him missing out on a start to the campaign.

The Brazilian has been away this summer as part of his country’s Copa America although is still behind Alisson (£6.0m) in the pecking order.

Goalkeepers are typically easier to drop straight back in a team with minimal preparation than outfield players, and with Ederson, he will probably be fresher than his Liverpool counterpart.

However, we know that Guardiola is a methodical man who values things should as preparation during pre-season, so it’s worth considering an outside chance of the cheaper Bravo starting the Community Shield.

So, everyone voted B yesterday which surprised me so I've calculated the expected points of both. Do you agree?

      A. Ederson (160) Laporte (170) Miliv/Zaha (150) = 480
      B. Pope (150) Zinchenko (100) Kdb (200) = 450

Depends where Zaha is? Mili is overpriced - will basically only return from pens and if there is no Zaha to win them then we’ll see a reduction in his points potential

Expected season points as opposed to expected early returns?

Thing with Mili is staying patient for pens to hit. I started with him last time and waited a while and still missed.

I’d vote against any double City defence as at some stage double attack is going to look juicy,. From 3/4 early on attack over defence feel better for big returns. And City could easily concede in all the first three.

I know it's preseason but Liverpool's form is a concern. They haven't won a match since and they were battered yesterday. They lacked fight at times and if they play the same against City, expect a big loss. Going with 3 Pool defenders is a no now, 2 is a slight concern. Anyone concerned they will have issues when the season starts?

What do you mean by half the squad is missing? The defence is intact, the goalie only missing. Midfield is also almost full strength. I know the 3 upfront give them massive confidence but it's the number of goals conceded which is worrying.

Those attacking three and the keeper make a massive difference

Teams become more concerned with being attacked than attacking- they defend from the front

The keeper actually saves goals. Mignolet was at fault for at least 1 of those yesterday

Don't read to much into preseason, most of pools best players aren't playing. See what team they put out at the weekend, and take it from there.

Right. This is quite common for major clubs in pre-season. Even the first-choice players are not particularly motivated and are avoiding injuries. None of the first team such as VVD or TAA feel their places are under threat in pre-season.

But surely you can also point to their attack as a concern.

I’ve always been dubious about starting Mo simply because tgat attack was unlikely to be grooved as s whole by gw1. That I realise is an extreme position hereabouts.

But friendly results per se don’t mean too much imo. It’s more about game time and combinations. Liverpool assets you pick mostly for long term value which will kick in after 4/5 games on.

If you mean the front 3 of Salah, Mane and Firmino - they know each other so well that they don't need a pre-season to gel. They may not all be fit to start GW1, and they may take 4-5 games to get up to 100%, but that's the same as every other player in the league.

            Not quite.

I’m currently on Fraser Wilson as a combo who are in a settled looking side with complete preseason work. I’m valuing sides that are settled over those that are getting new players in or lacking key performers in preseason. Those teams j feel are more likely to click in GWs 1 and 2.

For instance Gross is currently in for me as Brighton seem to have done business early and he’s had time to gel with new attack. Don’t like Brighton long term but feels quite nicecshort term.

        Very nice indeed.

Being picky I’d be half tempted by Vvd and Laporte over Digne Robbo and Coleman in for Zinc. Security over attacking returns?

You’ll probably want done City defence and Zinc is a complete unknown for nailedness. If he goes you won’t have another secure 5.5 option at City.

Coleman matched Digne late on and Everton defence is not such a secure call. If it fails then there are heaps of possible 5.5 replacements

Have something similar in principle. Fraser Wilson seems a good call early on as a settled combo. You can also lose one in week 3 and hope for share of returns later on from the one you keep.

McGinn is high up my watchlist but I’m holding off until we really know how Villa will line up.

Not seen any, but seems to be close to fitness. Arsenal basically have 3 CBs, Sokratis, Mustafi and Holding (with Kos on strike). You'd have to go with Sokratis and Holding, there.

So people are just competely ignoring preseason results, and only look at last season's stats? I know its only preseason but,it is a very good indicator of form and how they will play later on in the season. These players hate to lose, so its not like they go out there on the field and dont care about the result, or dont make an effort.

Last year around the same time (5th of august 2018) Liverpool beat Napoli 5-0. Its a lil bit concerning to me that they have conceded so many goals this preseason. This could of course change, but as it is right now I am kind of put off doubling upon Liverpool defence. Another thing to take into consideration is their tight schedule, playing more matches than any other PL team as far I know :

      28. juli: Napoli
      31. juli: Lyon
      4. august: Manchester City i Community Shield-final
      9. august: Norwich PL
      14. august: Chelsea i UEFA Super Cup-final
      17. august: Southampton PL.

So they are more likely to be tired, or rotate players, looking at that schedule. Did Liverpool have a freakish season last year, and overperform? Doubling up on their defence, or even tripling as I see some do, might be a viable tactic, but I am starting to steer off it thinking there might be better value elsewhere.

"So people are just competely ignoring preseason results, and only look at last season's stats?"

I could say the exact same thing to you. Its a viable question, as many people here use the phrase "Its only preseason, it doesnt matter". I am simply questioning that logic, as it doesnt make sense to me. Sure I know the games dont mean anything, and some players havent come joined the squad (Salah, Mane, Firmino, Alisson) Apart from that, in defence and midfield they have everyone as far as I know.

I would say its even more simplistic thinking saying "Its only preseason, you cant take anything from it, it doesnt matter". But if you dont wanna have a real discussion about it, or share your knowledge, apart from "Its only preseason", Id be interested in hearing.

No, my position is that pre-season has some relevance, but you have to analyse it carefully. I'm more interested in seeing what formations managers are trying out and who's getting minutes, more so than actual performances and results. I just don't like your binary language that implies anyone who doesn't agree with you 100% is an idiot.

That depends on how you interpret the first sentence. From my part it was a serious question, and in no way was I saying anyone that dont agree with me is an idiot. That makes no sense, because then I wouldnt be posting here. I was interested in hearing people's thoughts.

Just have to assess the importance of friendlies.

Lots of players missing, results not that important.

Eg Mount is looking interesting for chelsea. Tanganga probably wont be lining up in spurs defence gw1.

I expect liverpool might suffer first couple of weeks with late arrivals to preseason, but it will all be forgotten if they make it through to international break ok.

by that logic, they've overperformed two seasons in succession

in any case, we have the benefit of the Community Shield game to see if doubling up on Pool defence will be a mistake

It depends on who you are talking about and who they have played. Im sure you know its a difference in quality from the premiership to premier league, so Im always careful with newly promoted since. I know you trying to break holes in my logic, but its very much not the same situation.

Winning teams are used to that. Slightly more relevant for me is that teams are more likely to sit back and defend deep. For me, that means less pressure on the defence, more clean sheets and more opportunities for wingbacks. Conversely, it means less room for forwards such as Salah and Mane to operate.

You are spot on here. Teams will defend more against them this season. Will try and frustrate them so Salah and co. need to be at their best to win games. Defenders will have more freedom and perhaps CS potential.

players won't get tired this early in the season though

If Liverpool early fixtures were difficult, I might have had some doubts about doubling up. But now I am willing to take the 'risk' of starting with 2 Liv defenders, even after a poor pre-season

        1. Maddamotha
          • 7 Years
          4 years, 9 months ago

That is true, but managers might rotate early because they will get tired later on the season, in the business end, if they get worn out too early. Might be a very good tactic still, I currenly have 2 Pool defenders in my team, just not that sure about it atm.

Good points, is there a comparable period of fixture congestion last season? Might reveal how likely TAA/Rob rotation is. Given the PL opposition is Norwich & Southampton, wouldn't be a massive surprise if one of them misses a game, especially if they haven't reached peak fitness. Giving Gomez or Milner a game in one of those fixtures wouldn't jeopardise their chances much either.

It's quite unlikely though. I think the main thing to take from concerns like this is that it's important to have some playing bench players just in case.

No Salah gives you 10 good starters - 11 if you're confident about Dunk. With/without is not a cut-and-dried question.

4.5 defenders - I'm personally on a rotation with a Hammer and Villain. They both need to sit out nasty GW1 fixtures, so I have a midf benchie to step up.
