Rodgers provides clue to Leicester line-up in latest friendlies

There were two Leicester City friendlies contested simultaneously on Saturday, with a Brendan Rodgers-led Foxes team defeating Stoke City 2-1 and another City side drawing 2-2 at Rotherham United.

There was plenty to discuss from a Fantasy perspective and our Scout Notes article below rounds up the main talking points, as well as detailing the goalscorers, the assist-makers and the minutes played by each player.

Stoke City 1-2 Leicester City

  • Goals: Marc Albrighton (£5.5m), Youri Tielemans (£6.5m)
  • Assists: Ricardo Pereira (£6.0m), Ben Chilwell (£5.5m)

Rotherham United 2-2 Leicester City

  • Goals: Kelechi Iheanacho (£6.0m) x2
  • Assists: Harvey Barnes (£6.0m)

Brendan Rodgers provided Fantasy managers with a big clue as to his favoured starting XI as Leicester split their squad in two for a double-header against Stoke and Rotherham on Saturday.

The unquestionably stronger-looking side headed to the Potteries, with Rodgers overseeing a 2-1 win over Stoke.

Most of the names on the teamsheet at the Brittania Stadium were predictable but the inclusion of Marc Albrighton (£5.5m) over the likes of Harvey Barnes (£6.0m) and Demarai Gray (£5.5m) was perhaps telling.

Albrighton was the favoured option in the last four Gameweeks of 2018/19, starting all of Leicester’s matches in Gameweeks 35 to 38 after making his return from a hamstring injury as a substitute against Newcastle in Gameweek 34.

Gray and Barnes, by contrast, were both substitutes in Leicester’s last three fixtures of last season and it may well be that they again begin 2019/20 on the bench – barring any further injuries in the Foxes’ remaining pre-season fixture, of course.

Hamza Choudhury (£4.5m) started at the base of the Leicester midfield but it may be that he is merely a placeholder for Wilfred Ndidi (£5.0m), who has yet to feature for his side after his involvement with Nigeria in the Africa Cup of Nations this summer.

Ndidi has started all ten league matches under Rodgers’ stewardship so far, with Choudhury brought in alongside the Nigeria international when the Leicester boss opted for two defensive midfielders in matches against the ‘big six’.

Formation Experiment

While the personnel were fairly predictable at Stoke, the formation wasn’t.

Rodgers has largely favoured a 4-1-4-1 or 4-3-3 in his time in charge so far but chose Saturday’s match to experiment with a 4-4-2 diamond.

The final pre-season game against Atalanta on Friday may provide the ultimate signpost as to what system Rodgers opts for in Gameweek 1 but the Foxes’ head coach was content with the results of the weekend’s formation trial.

Rodgers said:

From a tactical perspective, we played with a different system. I was very pleased with how we functioned within that.

Stoke play with a diamond and their structure is very good. Nathan [Jones] is an excellent coach who has developed that system since he’s come in and they’ve played it a lot over the course of pre-season.

We played a system for the first game I was in (a 3-4-3 in the defeat to Watford) but I quickly recognised that I needed to simplify it, so we play 4-3-3 through to the end of the season, knowing that in pre-season I would get the opportunity to experiment both in training and in games.

I was so pleased, especially the second half when our passing was quicker. It’s not easy. You’ve got a stadium that’s a quarter full and it’s teeming down with rain but I thought the concentration was very good and we were able to find the spare man in the middle of the field. We worked on some movement patterns in order to do that.

So I think the players enjoyed it. It showed their adaptability because we want to have different ways that can surprise teams and it was a really good exercise for that.

Leicester’s back four was much the same as it was towards the back-end of last season but the positions of the players in front of them was worth noting.

Choudhury was stationed at the base of the midfield, with Albrighton to the left of him and the classy Youri Tielemans (£6.5m) to the right.

James Maddison (£7.0m) was deployed in ‘the hole’, meanwhile, with Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) joined up front by the fit-again Ayoze Perez (£6.5m).

Perez ‘out of position’

Having played and scored as an inverted winger/inside forward in the win over Scunthorpe earlier this month, Perez marked his return from injury at Stoke with a 90-minute run-out alongside Vardy in attack.

Reclassified as a Fantasy Premier League midfielder upon the game’s relaunch in June, Perez was always a candidate for an ‘out of position’ tag after making his £30m move from Newcastle United and so it came to pass in Staffordshire on Saturday.

The Spaniard arguably produced the most eye-catching display of the two Leicester strikers, although did drop deep on occasion to link up with the visitors’ midfield.

Both Perez and Vardy wasted decent openings in the first half, producing tame efforts when well-positioned in the centre of the Stoke box.

The fact that the Foxes’ strike pair were both involved in each other’s chance perhaps bodes well, however, with Perez teeing up Vardy for the former England international’s opportunity having earlier forced Jack Butland into a comfortable save when following up Vardy’s blocked shot.

Vardy perhaps hasn’t quite clicked into gear yet in pre-season, with one goal in four appearances thus far.

The premium FPL forward was still lively enough, though, and almost got on the scoresheet after the interval when rounding Butland and firing into the side-netting.

Maddison Alright

Having had his pre-season disrupted by his participation in the European Under-21 Championship, Maddison is now firmly back involved with the Leicester set-up and made his first start of the summer at the Brittania.

The mid-price FPL midfielder lasted the full 90 minutes and was one of the game’s stand-out players, testing Butland with a low strike in the first half and a direct free-kick after the break.

A role in ‘the hole’ is arguably Maddison at his best and there was further evidence of this in the Potteries, with the England international dictating play from a central position and again showing signs of a telepathic understanding with Vardy.

Forward-thinking full-backs

The narrow nature of City’s midfield in the 4-4-2 diamond (and, indeed, when Rodgers has played a 4-3-3/4-1-4-1 with inverted wingers) means there is plenty of room for Leicester’s two full-backs to exploit in attack.

Ben Chilwell (£5.5m) and Ricardo Pereira (£6.0m) were again given license to get forward and it was no surprise that both players banked assists on Saturday.

Albrighton opened the scoring with a brilliantly taken goal from a Pereira cross and, after Nick Powell had drawn Stoke level, Tielemans – with his first goal of pre-season – restored the visitors’ advantage when turning in Chilwell’s low ball.

Pereira said after the game:

Yes, I think the system is good for me because the way we play, the full-backs have the freedom to [go forward] and have the chance to help. I feel good and I’m always ready to help the team.

Former Leicester defender Matt Elliott, summarising the game, said of the Portuguese full-back:

He was the main outlet in the first half for sure and it was a bit of a mismatch on that far side of the pitch.

Pereira was having an absolute field day with no end results. He was hitting crosses in the box, but nothing was happening as a consequence.

In the second half, that proved to be different. He was there for Albrighton’s goal, he assisted in that. He was getting forward more and more regularly. He’s got such a good engine.

Not-so-great Dane

It was a mixed bag from Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) on Saturday, with the Leicester goalkeeper unable to register a second consecutive clean sheet after returning from his extended summer break.

The Denmark international saved a first-half penalty from Sam Vokes but was beaten by an overhit cross from Powell and twice passed straight to Stoke players when attempting to play the ball out from the back.

While his distribution may in itself be a worry on the clean sheet front, Schmeichel looked to exploit the opposition high press on one occasion when punting a long ball to Vardy – as he did with success in the win over Arsenal in Gameweek 36.

Mendy Injury

Leicester’s second string drew 2-2 with Rotherham in Saturday’s other game, with Kelechi Iheanacho (£6.0m) scoring twice.

Barnes and Gray flanked the Nigerian in attack, with the former providing the assist for Iheanacho’s first goal.

Nampalys Mendy (£4.5m) limped off early in the second half, with assistant manager Chris Davies saying:

I don’t know, it’s very difficult to tell at this stage. It will have to get assessed in the next couple of days and see where he is at.

He has had a great pre-season, he has done very well, Papy. It’s a shame he’s got that knock and has had to come off, but that’s football.

Leicester City XI v Stoke City (4-4-2 diamond): Schmeichel, Ricardo, Maguire, Evans, Chilwell, Choudhury, Perez, Tielemans, Maddison, Albrighton (Leshabela 76′), Vardy.

Leicester City XI v Rotherham United (4-1-4-1): Ward, Justin, Soyuncu, Morgan, Fuchs, Mendy (Amartey 48′), Gray, King, Silva (Ghezzal 55′), Barnes (Muskwe 84′), Iheanacho.

That's who I've got but as a rotation option. I wouldn't want to have a 5.5 starter every week.

    Happy new season everyone.

I've purposefully avoided fpl until now to have a decent break so got a lot of catching up to do.

First question, do you think VAR will significantly increase number of penalties awarded? Enough to influence team selection to squeeze in extra takers?

Same here. Taken a break from fpl too. Just catching up on articles and reading opinion before I get on with the tinkering.

Pretty sure that the number of penalties will increase. Definitely a deciding factor in choosing players this season.

The numbers from European leagues would suggest not, but I suspect there may be a transitional period that could influence FPL managers.

I'm also sceptical after the initial FA Cup trials, that referees in this country are going to be fully on board with VAR's implementation. Hope I'm wrong and it's seamless.

I think most think it will be largely insignificant as outlined by these stats from VAR used in other leagues.

The stats from other leagues say it will probably even itself out, however I feel that more physical side to the Premier League may influence this, hence why I have gone for a front 3 of Vardy, King and Kane...

New handball rule + VAR implies there will be an increase in penalties despite the article that keeps being peddled on here as proof that there wont be an increase. Bookies expect an increase of over 20% in penalties... no reason to doubt them.

Right, they're possibly the 2 best options at that price point. I would be concerned about the bench. What I'd actually do as you're non-committed is convert Robby to Norwood, thus having 0.5 to reinvest in a nailed-on 4.5 defender.

Coleman is good bet digne more bps magnet and set pieces. Coleman may miss some games too if they sign a RB.

Vardy allows a neat enough move to the 9.0-9.5 brigade if necessary...

      But I don't think it'll be necessary 😉

I am currently on Wilson, Jota, Fraser and Perez as my 4 interchangeable assets. Plus the backline I suppose but see them more as season keepers along with Salahling

How’s she looking ? I know I’ve gone big at the back but I’m willing to take the gamble in the early game weeks. Any advice on how to improve the team is welcome.

    Ederson
    Coleman Azpi VVD Laporte Robertson
    Fraser Sterling Salah Tielemans
    King

    Subs: Button, Dendoncker, Greenwood, Wickham

I’d drop one of the city defenders to upgrade king to Wilson. King as a lone striker doesn’t feel great

If you're going for 541 I'd rather have Digne than Coleman. I'd downgrade Azpi to fund it personally.

That 541 looks appealing, but if King doesn't play you'll be down to 10 for the week.

Id go Digne over Azpi though and perez over tiekemans or Fraser

    Pope
    TAA, VVD, Zinchenko, Coleman
    Trossard, Perez, Fraser, Salah, Sterling
    Wilson

    4.0, Wesley, Kelly, Greenwood

This allows me to rotate the players with tough fixtures for first two weeks or so and then I can reassess (Wesley against Spurs, Perez at Chelsea, Fraser at home to City).

Yes two differentials but I am convinced Wesley will do well and I like Trossard as good pre season and lovely fixtures for Brighton early on.

Will monitor the Burnley keeper situation (may go back to Ryan) and also what is happening with Zinchenko in the Charity Shield.

Yes it is better that way to be honest or if you do not mind, you can also go wild without a keeper early on 🙂 then re strategise later while using the cash elsewhere( It is not like Ryan or Pope will keep a clean sheet gameweek after game week, You know)

Jenkinson is very unlikely but Chambers is getting a decent amount of game time. If Arsenal go with 3 at the back, I can see him being one of the 3 but that's just speculation for now. Wouldn't get an Arsenal defender anyway though.

As an Arsenal fan there's absolutely no chance Jenskinson starts. Maitland Niles and Bellerin ahead of him. Holding and Sokratis will be first choice CBs and Chambers will be back up for both. So yeah steer clear of both

Who is everyone's choice of keeper then?

I am looking at a 4.5m. I think the Burnley keeper is the best option but who will start?

Similar problem with the Bournemouth keeper.

I think Henderson of Sheffield United will do alright.

Ryan is a safe option with nice fixtures but I don't think they will get many clean sheets. Potter is known for attacking football and conceding goals too.

I can't decide so what I'm doing is this: start with Foster for up to the first 4 GWs. Then I either upgrade him to the 'right' 5.5 or downgrade him to the 'emerged' 4.5. Right now it's too much of a guessing game for me.

I don't know, so I'm hedging. Much easier to switch to the likes of Pickford or Lloris from 5m than from a 4.5.

Ideally not, but I think I'm on the right lines.
Ideally I want one of the 6m premiums, but my Pool and City slots are filled.
I just don't know how much to trust Everton, Chelsea, United and Spurs defences so I won't commit.
If I start with a 4.5 I'll certainly be jumping off him onto another at some point, so I might as well do that with a temp 5m who starts with very easy fixtures.

Brighton were dreadful last year, but the season before Ryan returned a very healthy pts total.

I've said I'm starting with Foster due to easy fixtures but swiftly moving on.
What Ryan/Button fans are overlooking is the new manager effect. Potter is far more attacking, which suggests to me they'll be more open at the back.

It's a tough call this year!

I like the security of a premium 6m keeper, but when I start looking to find a bit extra cash for a midfielder / forward I want, it tends to be that keeper that gets cut down first. Therefore, I think I'll go for a 4.5 rotation - hopefully Pope and Heaton (at Villa) and then hope for the best.

Can't see a 4.5m keeper I could count on week on week right now. Henderson could be interesting though.

Don't do cheap Gk rotation, it's a trap! If you do the maths on Villa/Burnley (and anticipate around 8 clean sheets) only about 10 points net are positively fixture dependant for their gks as they will get more or less as many save points/bonuses as they get from clean sheets/lose from goals conceded. So you might get about 5 extra points for the 0.5 over the season not to mention the frustration of frequently picking the wrong one.

Interesting! I went with the rotation last year and it worked out superbly for me, but many who went with the same rotation found the complete opposite, just came down to 50/50 calls.

I'll definitely keep it in mind, that extra .5 could be crucial to me

Markus, you speak the truth. Rotation sounds good, but when you do the math, the benefits are small.

For me, I’m going Ryan/Button. It’s not that I like Brighton defensively this year... I don’t. Rather, it’s essentially a set and forget option, and the 1.5 helps a lot elsewhere. Said another way is basically:

                      A: Laporte, Ryan, Button
                      B: Ederson, 4.0, 5.0 (defender)

                      I like A a lot better.

think button an a set an forget keeper, on ederson at the moment
dont like rotating as normally pick the wrong one, as easiest fixture on paper doesnt always happen!
              maybe lloris or kepa?
tot have city and ars in first 10
chelasea only have utd gw1, pool gw 6 in first 12 gw
they can be downgraded if good cheaper option is nailed like pope etc, or upgraded to ederson allison easier than a 4.5
thats only my opinion, good luck all !

5.0 Fabianski set and forget. I think all the 4.5s looks bad this year. People are hoping Burnley will revert to 17/18 form but I dont think it will happen.

I like this as well (although I may still go for a premium GK). Fab is also my pick of the 5.0s (can be paired with Button to save 1M compared to Allison/Ederson). The opener at home to City is a tough start, but he's likely to get save points. West Ham's only other top six opponent in the first dozen gameweeks is Man U... so good fixtures for the first few months.

If you're going to wildcard in the first 10 games anyway you'll know a lot more about the Burnley situation which could be the answer but right now there are three to guess from.

              Ryan/Button;
              - Least value in keepers so investing as little as possible
              - Button only works as a backup to Ryan
              - Not much points difference between the keepers anyway
              - Good starting fixtures
              - Should get some save points at least

I’ve always advocated 2X4.5 but this year the options are not that great.

I’ll await a Burnleykeeper to come to the fore, otherwise Ryan (pending transfers)

Was initially set on Ederson (maybe favouritism after he helped me have a great start last season) but I'm opting for Pope and Henderson.

They rotate pretty well and I think 6.0 is too much for a premium now and that extra cash can be used elsewhere. Already lumping a lot of money at the back only to get heartbroken when they lose the cleansheets in the 90th minute.

I know people are dead set against rotating cheapos but it's never burnt me and would I be that gutted if one in a million they haul against a big team? Not really as there will be multiple times they would score 1/2 points.

Tear this draft to pieces. I am convinced that triple Pool defence is the way to go so I can't be convinced to get Mo.

            Henderson (assuming 4.5)
            TAA VVD Robbo Laporte Zinchenko
            Sterling Martial Fraser Perez
            Kane

            Subs: Dendoncker, Greenwood, Wickham

I have 1.0 in the bank but amnt gonna spend it for the sake of it. I am fine with having this bench. First 11 is more important

I would have said yes at the beginning of the game, but the more time I spend looking at the emerging midfield and forward options, the more potential I see. Therefore, just 3 at the back in my starting formation is much more appealing now.

Robbo+TAA was nailed on for me as soon as the game started. Many are going for VVD and think he's better than Robbo. Not for me.Those two are absolutely crucial to Liverpool's attack.
Digne+Coleman- Again great options. But not sure on Everton defensively or in attack.Thats my worry.Currently I have both but I would be happy ditching one if there was a better option at 5.5.

            I asked this last night, but will ask again with the usual morning crowd;

            Liverpool defence.
Anyone slightly worried about how many goals they're conceding in preseason? The last two games have been the first choice back four, although Alisson is still missing. But so far of the 5 pre-season games they have only managed to keep a clean sheet against Tranmere Rovers.

Is the Liverpool defensive double up over?

You're paying for points last season. Diminishing returns theory. That said last season biggest mistake was going without Robbo and refusing to get him in though TAA Salah Mane was mostly ok

Defence is fine. Allison changes things no doubt but more importantly it’s the likes of Salah, Firmino, Mane that have hindered them pre-season. The high press and high tempo they provide has been lacking which gives the opposition time to get at the back 4. This is exactly how City keep so many clean sheets. It’s their system, not so much their personnel across the backline which produces the results

With VVD & Allison the pitch they'll be like a brick wall again

Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong, but wasn't VvD playing, along with both full backs, and Matip (Gomez on the bench, which suggests this is first choice defence) in the last two games, where they conceded three to Napoli, and two to Sporting Lisbon...not sure he played against Savilla, or Dortmund when they concede two and three respectively.

Is Allison that important to them defensively?

Don't fall into the trap of thinking pre season friendlies are even mildly relevant

Ha, well surely they carry some relevance.
I agree early pre-season when teams are putting out two difference teams each half, but I think in general they're worth looking at.

Honestly, friendlies (at any time of year) are worse than irrelevant

They bear literally no resemblance to how a team will perform in a competitive match

Liverpool could of course concede v Norwich. They could concede vs any team in the league.

But in the (unlikely) event they do it will have had zero to do with a pre season friendly, their defence will be tighter than the tightest of ducks arses over the course of the season again - as long as no injuries to VVD or Allison

To a large extent I agree, about friendlies being mostly irrelevant, for performance at least. I think they will help us with predicting line ups.

...and I've not even watched the games myself, just the scores alone are a concern.

But you're probably right about Liverpool defence once the real season starts.

I'm actually hoping they ship 3 or 4 in the charity shield

                          (a) it may knock a few % of their ownership, which will be good for owners if & when they start scoring points and

                          And

                          (b) it'll ensure there's even less chance of any complacency vs norwich

As I said below, if they concede 2/3 in the CS then yes, ownership will take a big hit.

Especially as we only have, what 2m people playing so far, and last year wasn't there 5m or so?

Alisson is very important to Liverpool. Keepers also help to monitor the shape of the defence apart from making saves and so much more.

In the world right now, Alisson is the best goal keeper over every other goalie.

I agree he's important, hence why I noted his absence in the original post.
But is he important enough that a team that has conceded two or three goals in their last five games is suddenly going to start conceding nothing?

I think as Ibrox, and Berbs have said, the others players in the team, who can carry out the high press more effectively, will help get the defence back on track.

I haven't watched the preseason games, only seen the scores, but they were enough to worry me.

Yes he is that important, Do you remember when Mignolet & Karius where in goal for Liverpool 🙂

To me, I believe Alisson is slightly even more important than VVD. For every team that challenges for a title in any league or football competition, there is no way that team wins it without a quality goal keeper. So far this calender year, Alisson has won the most important trophies + personal award with both Club and Country. He can do literally almost everything with the ball( Passes, Saves, Reflexes etc) as well as ensure the shape of the defence during in play & set piece situations( corners, Direct free kicks, Indirect etc) is well in shape.

Believe me he is so so important to Liverpool but ofcourse the defence in general also must be quality.

                                  Good, but not fantastic.

United won it with Barthez...who was so bad they rotated him with Roy Carroll.

I insist, at the time, Lehman was a fantastic goal keeper! He conceded 26 goals in the league compare that with Alisson's 22. Not much different in it.

Roy Carroll was also very good for united that year. There is no way a team will win a trophy without a quality/ fantastic goal keeper. It is almost totally impossible.

He wasn't, remember when he 'conceded' that goal against Spurs when he got lobbed from 60 yards, but the linesman was too slow to get back and see it had crossed the line?

Look, generally I agree with you, title winning teams need a decent goalkeeper, of course, but I'm still concerned by the amount of goals Liverpool are conceding this pre-season.

But there is a difference in saying they were fantastic in hindsight compared with an opinion of them before they won the league.

Who would have said they were fantastic keepers at the start of the respective seasons?

However totally agree with you on how important Alisson is to Liverpool.

Long term, I see Pool defenders racking up similar hauls from last season.
I think Virg will cream it.

The way I see it, the Liverpool defence is so secure, in friendlies they are not worried enough to put in 100%, and risk injuries.

Furthermore, I also think that whilst Liverpool and City have settled defences, the nearest rivals don't. I am concerned about how watertight Chelsea, United, Spurs, Everton, Arsenal and others will be.

I don't think watertight is a phase we can expect to use alongside Arsenal or United for some time.

It's not even so much who's better, it's just, is it worth paying £13-14m for two defenders who haven't kept a clean sheet in preseason for five games in a row?

Perez will take time to adopt to new team while tielemans is poised to continue his fine form for leicester as he has good understanding with vardy maddison

Vardy and Perez are the goal scorers.
Maddison and Tielemans are the play makers.

As Perez is classed as a midfielder, that makes his chance of returns higher, and the more attractive option in my opinion.

Striker vs midfielder, almost a full preseason for Perez and 3 full seasons in the premier league.
Tielemans overperformed last season and there is no guarantee that he will keep up that scoring rate

Nice. Doubling up on Everton defence is insane for me so would drop one of Coleman or Digne and upgrade elsewhere. Robinson is the obvious candidate. It's literally the first I've heard of him.

Many, but I'm sticking with Jota. (a) Jimi might be tired, and (b) they've just bought a striker who I think is more likely to threaten Jimi's spot than Jota's.
