Premium defenders appeal ahead of new Sky Sports Fantasy Football season

Fantasy managers looking to make the most of premium defenders might enjoy playing Sky Sports Fantasy Football this season.

Premium options at the back came to the fore in the 2017/18 instalment of the popular Fantasy game and there is every chance they could prove to be key assets this time around.

There were five defenders among Sky Sports Fantasy‘s top 10 point-scorers last season, a new record and more than any other position.

With Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola bringing possession football and hugely attacking full-backs to the Premier League, Andrew Robertson (12 assists) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (11 assists) impressed in 2018/19.

However, it was their Dutch colleague Virgil van Dijk who stole the headlines, finishing both as the top-scoring defender in Sky Sports Fantasy Football last season and the highest scorer in any position.

His 299 points, averaging 7.9 per match were recorded as van Dijk won the Champions League, PFA Player of the Year and helped his national side to reach the UEFA Nations League final.

His statistics in Sky Sports Fantasy Football led to him offering an excellent captain option most weeks too, which is why he is expected to be popular again in 2019/20.

Van Dijk kept a total of 20 clean sheets and scored four goals while also performing well for bonus points. He hit tier-one and tier-two passing bonus points on a combined total of 27 occasions.

Fantasy Football Scout Members can access the passing bonus statistics for Sky in the Members Area.

Ahead of the new season, they can also analyse which players look best for tackle bonus as well.

Aymeric Laporte, who came second overall, managed to do hit bonus an impressive 28 times, with 25 of those coming from tier two (70 or more passes in a single game).

That contributed an additional 75 points to his overall tally of 269 in 2018/19. The Frenchman scored 30.57 points-per-million (£8.8m last year), more than any other player, proving a valuable and pivotal pick for Sky Sports Fantasy Football bosses.

As you can see, Manchester City and Liverpool’s exciting title challenge last year heralded a new era in Sky Sports Fantasy Football, with the focus shifting more towards defenders.

Cesar Azpilicueta was the only defender to rank inside the top 10 points scorers in 2016/17, finishing in ninth position.

In fact, the Spanish international was the first defender in the history of the game to achieve this feat and he has since repeated it in both of the two most recent seasons.

From 2016 to 2019, Azpilicueta has amassed an impressive total of 669 points highlighting the point-pulling power that centre-backs or full-backs (he has played in both positions) now possess.

In 2017/18, just four points separated Nicolas Otamendi (244) and Cesar Azpilicueta (240) as they took up the fourth and fifth positions respectively. Otamendi registered 14 clean sheets and found the back of the net four times, while Azpilicueta capped 15 clean sheets with two goals and assists. Both players earned valuable Sky Sports Fantasy Football points from unlikely and underestimated positions.

With the emphasis more than ever on defenders, there is enough value in each player to be convinced that they are worth researching as much as the attacking stars.

Their point-scoring has increased year-on-year; who knows what the top five or 10 players in Sky Sports Fantasy Football will look like in 12 months’ time?

Still might be worth waiting till GW5. Ideal early wildcard week too. Fixtures swing for a few teams.

      Team looks like this:

      4.5
      TAA VVD Digne
      Salah KDB Perez 5.5
      Kane Wilson 6.5

A few gaps to fill so appreciate your preferences from

4.5 GK - Pope, Heaton (AVL), Henderson
5.5 MF - McGinn, Robinson, Ceballos
6.5 FW - Jota, King, Wood

That MF spot is going to be a hard one to fill. You need this seasons Brooks to emerge. Filter those 3 by fixtures?

Think McGinn might be this year's Fraser. Shame that he is quite so prone to yellow cards.

Starting the season: Henderson, none (switch position to Coleman or Zinch... or Locadia), King
By GWs 3, 4 and 5, you'd know who to switch those 3 slots to, IF you need to switch

Has Hart had the most preseason minutes?

Why did Heaton start ahead of Hart last night when clearly a move away was on the cards?

            • 7 Years

Read an article for their friendly before. Saying Hart had the most minutes by about 20 minutes. But if Pope is out for a game or 2 and Heaton is off... Surely Hart starts? Baring in mind Pope hasn't really played much in two years.

            1. HamezMace

The minutes have been split pretty evenly over the three keepers, but Heaton started the last two, and played the full 90 minutes in both....which is just strange when this transfer has been on the cards for so long, why not play Hart?
I think Pope is the better, and more long term option for Burnley personally.

Yeah, I agree. But I don't think the fixtures/strength of their team warrants all this love to be fair. They've been running on fumes for a couple of years and although they're a stubborn team to play, I think they'll get found out this year. Heaton wi be a miles better bet at Villa who have put together a pretty solid defensive base.

That's a very vague question as all 3 options have a different price range. I'd probably go Pool def but would want KdB soon as well. Moura is a no go for me till Poch finally gives up on Alli (which won't happen ever by the looks of it).

4/5 at the back formations definitely seem much more comfortable to me this year considering that you won't be rushing to transfer your players out as you know that they'll return points over the coarse of the season. Even when their fixtures turn, you'll have enough budget to do a straight swap to another premium option who will also make you comfortable like your previous player.

We tend to avoid having to use transfers on defenders anyway so this seems like the perfect fix. Also gives you room to take punts in midfield and attack as those are the positions where the bandwagons arise. The only downside however, is the fact that there are no 4.0 players in these positions while the 4.5 options also are almost never going to get over 3 points. Has anyone found the perfect balance?

You've been reading my posts! 😉

Not a fan of 'balance' myself, but the astute strategy is to start with known winners at the back and wait for the currently unknown stars to emerge. Easy enough to do a 2FT to switch a 6m def+4.5 mid > bandwagon 6m midf and bandwagon 4.5 def.

Best £5m midfielder? On Holebas currently but thinking of waiting to see who from Zouma/Christensen lock down the Chelsea spot also.

    Current 442

    Ryan
    TAA VVD Luiz Holebas
    Salah Sterling Pogba Perez
    Wilson Jota

Waiting for updates also on Chelsea's first choice striker, Dybala and potentially Shaw/AWB if Maguire and/or Bruno sign.

So basically this team could completely change in the next week 😐

      Looks okay.

Deulo missed the game against QPR though, so see how he does against Real Sociedad.

“Little problems all of them. Chalobah, even Holebas, Gerard – our players today who we preferred to rest. But, in a couple of days hopefully, they will be ready. In this moment we prefer to be prudent.” – Javi Gracia

The previous game against Leverkusen was 7 days earlier. So given Deulo's history it is a little worrying he wasn't fit to start with just one pre-season game remaining.

Hows this attacking looking? I see more value in the mid priced strikers this year, also allows me to chop and change to Haller / Kean / Jiminez when i need to: Therefore im running 4-3-3

    Sterling / Kdb / Perez
    Lacazette / Wilson / Vardy

        I disagree personally,

I did have Fraser in a 4-4-2, but Wilson offers much more imo.

I cant see any midfielders at 9m id rather have than laca or vardy. Maybe Son in a few gameweeks.

Everton mid would be nice, but they havnt clicked and personally prefer any one of my strikers

Would really like to have Kane but for me Sterling 100% nailed and need that pool cover so cant fit a premium forward in.

    A,

    C,

Mkhi and Lingard would be replaced by Pepe, and Dybala in those formations, should they arrive?

Worried that McBurnie fee has been agreed with Sheffield United, £20m - which is a club record, one of Sharp/Robinson could lose out too.

How confident are you about Abraham?

1/ Long term yes, but doubt they would start GW1
2/ Sharp could even be McGoldrick, not sure about that one
3/ Not very, might be Giroud, but I think Abraham has bigger chance

He looks sharp, has had a full summer off for the first time in a while and think he will be desperate to smash the August drought and get some goals in the new stadium as well as reclaim his golden boots.

Grant, United third GK, is 5.0

    Sound logic

    Pickford

    Zinchenko - Walker - VVD - TAA

    Fraser - Siggy - Salah - Sterling

    Murray - King

    (Button, Kelly, Dendoncker, Greenwood)

correct me if i am wrong.
forgot if that was the case since last time i did it was a while ago.
say i have 4 in a team, eg buying VVD when he was in soton when i had 3 pool players.
if i have 3 in a team, eg buying zaha with 3 everton already,
that means next player i transfer out must be everton, but i still get points if i "do nothing" aka leaving 4 everton in my team, right?

Been with Kane / Salah from day 1, but now I tried to squeeze Sterling in too. Lost Ederson as set & forget plus downgraded Wilson to Ings and Robinson to Doncker.

    Heaton / Pope
    Robbo / TAA / Digne / Guilbert / Lundstram
    Salah / Sterling / Perez / McGinn / Doncker
    Kane / Ings / Greenwood

Looks set, or would you revert to 2 of Kane/Salah/Sterling and redistribute?

G2G? Hardest season to get a balanced team this year, Amazed a lot of people seeing value in cheaper keepers virtually never pays off over the course of a season compared with a set and forget like Edy/Alisson

    Ederson

Trent - Dunk (leics punt) - AWB
    Ceballos - Salah - Sterling - A.Perez
    Jota - King - Kane

Bench is fodder - Button - Dendo - Laundstrum - kelly

Both in my draft. Azpili will be Alonso if he's confirmed as nailed.

My priority at the back is City/Pool. After those 2 I'm less confident about clean sheets. All the leading pack have defensive issues and I'm slightly more confident in the Chelsea defence than Spurs, United, Everton, Leicester, Wolves or Arsenal.

My intention is to set and forget my defence and those 2 are season-nailed.

Absolutely! Personally i'm starting with Digne. When that fixture turns in GW7 i'll be weighing up between the two depending on Digne and Evertons form. Azpi seems ever so reliant and playing fullback where he got over 170 points in the previous two seasons. Luiz intrigues me as the more entertaining player to have and there is slight suspicion he may be on pens this season. So will wait and see how Lampard has that team over the first few gameweeks.

    Salah - Fraser - Perez(maybe Tielesman) - Zaha(tbd) - Sterling.
